Driving into DT at Rush Hour

For those that have a car downtown and commute to other parts of North Jersey... how is your evening commute?

I work in Teaneck, and no matter if I take the turnpike, River Road, or 1&9 home, there seems to be no easy approach into downtown at night. I used to drive into Hoboken but it just seems that JC has even more buildup and less access from that part of North Jersey. I used to get to Hoboken in under 40 minutes but getting to my apt. in Hamilton Park is now about 50 - 1 hr. Probably doesn't help that I'm commuting at the height of rush hour...

Note that I'm not complaining. I understand this is what happens when you live in a city and have a suburban job. Just wondering how everyone else deals with it and if they have any tips! Thanks!

Just wondering how everyone

My question is... as the town transforms, or gentrifies, where are all of the people being displaced supposed to go? Is NYC and its surrounding areas of the outer boroughs and northern NJ just one day going to become unaffordable/overdeveloped for most?

I've often wondered the same thing about that area. The views from some of the parks are magnificent, and the building infrastructure is there. Having traveled to other cities, you see neighborhoods like this all the time become popular destinations/living outposts.

I think you hit the nail on the head with transportation. A bus ride just doesn't seem as "efficient" as a subway ride from BK. Similarly, people just want that NYC address, no matter how you slice it or dice it.

I don't foresee any lightrail or PATH extensions coming up the cliff over there... so IDK what the other options are.

Does anybody know if the Powerhouse Lounge is still for sale? I remember hearing it was for sale about a year ago, but I don't see it on any list of JC bars/restaurants for sale.

Are you in the market for a new bar/restaurant?

Never been but have only heard so-so things. It's advertised so heavily on the PATH but I've always been confused by its pizza/sushi/nightclub combination.

Does anyone know why JC has no current small music spaces. Is there an ordinance against them? The day before Thanksgiving we met my BiL at a gig of his friends jazz band in Brooklyn in a tiny space (maybe 23 x 35) in the back of a Park Slope bar. It was terrific! It's crazy there's nothing like that here.

The last time I saw live indoor music Downtown was salsa at the Hard Grove, but it was so ridiculously loud we had to leave. You DO NOT need to amplify horns and drums in a space that small! The band in Brooklyn was drums, sax, tuba and guitar, but only the last was amped. Real pros know how to play to the room.

Hopefully this will start to change! I'm very excited to check out a show at White Eagle Hall and am hoping it's the spark to a new music scene in JC. Seems like the enthusiasm is everywhere in town... now you need the venues to start making it happen.

Battelo had a stand at the recent Project: Market, and while I didn't have a chance to sample their food, it seems they want to make the efforts to become another top-tier eatery in JC. On display were some renderings for what they envision for the space, including prime views and a lively bar scene.

Anyone know anything about 131 Erie Street? It's located next to Basic by Hamilton Park, and used to apparently house Ginfi and Parkside Bistro. For a while there was a sign that read "Restaurant for Lease" but looks as if some recent construction has just picked up. Just curious..

I dined here on Friday, and thought the food and service were top notch. However, the ambiance is a bit strange as it coexists as an upscale eatery/trendy club/sports bar. Would prefer if the TVs stayed out of the dining area!

I understand, but was also referring to the type of press, reviews, etc. it will receive. I think, when it comes to JC, the more the better. Excited to see what comes next!

Nice to see the scene continue to get reputable press. It seems that something new is opening every other week. I wonder if Talde will be the next "destination" restaurant (appealing to NYers) to follow Thirty Acres.

Have the rush hours between JSQ/33 always been this crowded? Have steps ever been taken to alleviate the cramped commute?

Here's The Atlantic's JC profile. Interesting comments about the dating scene and those moving in with their BF/GF (guilty). The appeal is different vs. Hoboken, but hopefully slightly cheaper rents and a more eclectic vibe will draw even more energetic peeps.

Thanks, all... Hamilton Park.

We're Bergen natives and did the post-college Hoboken thing, but feel JC offers more of what we're looking for right now. I'm sure I'll become more active once we get into the swing of things. Seems like there are a lot of new and exciting things happening in town as well as a lot of positivity. Wish us luck!

The Best Cities for Millenials

Hi All, first post here, as my GF and I are recent additions to JC (formerly in Hoboken). Ironically, while in the midst of a move-in, I came across this article, and figured I'd share.

The Atlantic magazine recently announced Jersey City as one of the top cities for our age group, millenials - a prototype for "the gem next door."

Quote:
These more modestly sized, vibrant cities tend to be adjacent to giant ones. They mimic some of the charms of their bigger siblings, but at a dramatically reduced price point. In places like Milwaukee and Jersey City, local governments are more accessible, and the likelihood of being able to buy property or pay rent without scrambling is far higher. In each case, places like Chicago or New York are short drives or train rides away, but Jersey City and Milwaukee are more than mere commuter towns?they have attracted a niche of young people invested in their communities.

Looks like they will be profiling the town more in-depth in the coming days. What do you think? Looking forward to becoming a part of the JC community... thanks!
