Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

Are you sure you didn't accidentally hit Uber black car? I have done that a few times. I take uberX all over the place- so the $18 from McGinley Square to downtown is way too much. Yesterday I went from Lincoln Park to 54th Street in West New York for $22- double check the bill you received- and if the route is suspect-looking, contact the uber customer service. I have had great results with them!

I know St Pauls Church in 5 corners rents out their parish hall. They also have a parking lot!

I guess it is just a matter of personal comfort level. I have attended every year, and truly enjoyed both meeting other JC residents, and their soups! During the swap, everyone goes around to let people know if there are ingredients in their soups to be careful with (allergy-type issues: shellfish, nuts, meats etc...)

Many of the swappers know each other from other groups in JC, others do not. Like I said, it is a matter of personal comfort level. You are right in that there has to be a level of trust. I welcome you to come check it out if you are interested, even without taking soup!

SOUP SWAP 2014!

Just can't stay away

Please come to the 8th Annual Jersey City Soup Swap!

When: Sunday, January 26 from 1:30-2:30pm
Where: Grace Van Vorst Parish Hall 39 Erie Street on the corner of 2nd and Erie Streets

Why: Why? SOUP. That's why. There is also a fantastic book sale that goes on during this time, so make sure you bring a few bucks to pick up some good reads!

How: A Soup Swap is similar to a cookie exchange at the holidays. Make at least 4 quarts of soup ahead of time, and freeze it. Label your soup so others will know what is in it. There will be prizes for "Best Dressed" soup, as well as other categories. We will gather, introduce ourselves and our soups and then swap until there is no more soup on the table! Be adventurous, creative or get your grandmother to give up the secret family recipe for her flu-fighting chicken noodle! Nothing is better than getting home late from work on a cold winter night, not wanting to cook dinner, and finding a quart of homemade delicious soup waiting for you in your freezer!

Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JCSoupSwap or email jcsoupswap@gmail.com for any questions.

Please help spread the word!

I have taken classes with Fluent City. The Manhattan location is right at 41st and Broadway. Their schedule was varied and with a Living Social coupon I took 20 hours of Portuguese for only $160! Definitely worth checking out. Their website is www.fluentcity.com They can help you decide what level to be on! Buena Suerte!

SOUP SWAP 2013!

Just can't stay away

Hey Soup Swap fans!

As you may or may not know, our Soup Queen Monyca has moved to Seattle. I can not imagine a winter without a Jersey City Soup Swap, so let's keep this tradition going!

Save the Date: Sunday, February 3rd
- time and location TBD...

Get those soup pots scrubbed! Cold weather is perfect for making, swapping, and most importantly...EATING soup!

PM me for questions, or if you would like to help!
-Emily Litman
*********************************************
If you don't know what the heck a Soup Swap is...

You make 6 quarts of your favorite soup. Maybe a family recipe for good old-fashioned chicken noodle, a classic chili, a vegetarian chowder? Any soup goes! Freeze the 6 quarts. Like really freeze them...Show up at the Soup Swap, and numbers are drawn to determine the order. We will start by introducing ourselves and sharing the story of our soup! (say what kind it is etc...) Then whoever has #1 chooses a quart of someone else's soup to take home, followed by person #2, #3 etc... When we reach the top, we start with the highest number and go backwards. UNTIL THE SOUP IS GONE!

Prizes will be awarded for various categories.

This is a great way to meet new neighbors and who doesn't love a freezer full of soup in the winter??????????

On Central, between St. paul's and Hopkins there is a house with awesome wood carvings of a bear, fish and one other thing which I don't remember. Very cool, and the resident does them, I assume from the uncarved tree trunks on the porch.

It is fantastic! Greetings from Buenos Aires where I spend every summer. La Fusta is one a few places I will even order meat in the NYC area. I can recommend the entra?a which is a skirt steak- that is my favorite. The La Fusta Salad is quite good, and for a change from normal, try the white sangria on a really hot day! Now I am hungry...good thing I can get the real thing, and not have to be on 1&9 =) Enjoy!

Lacrosse for kids in JC!

Just can't stay away

Hello all!

Two JC residents, and life-long lacrosse fans, are interested in starting a lax program right here in our city! We are looking for community members who would be interested in helping to introduce this exciting sport to the youth of Jersey City. We are planning on having an organizational meeting on Tuesday, February 9th at 7:30 pm. (location will depend on number of people attending!)

Please email us at jerseycitylax@gmail.com if you are interested in attending the meeting or helping out in other ways. We hope to run a few introductory lacrosse clinics this spring for children in our city.

Please help us! Thanks!

Public Transportation to 2495 JFK Blvd.

NJ Transit lines #1,43,80 and 87 all go within 5 blocks of the Caritas building.

I know the 80 stops at Grove Street, and that the 87 runs through the Heights. The #1 bus runs from Exchange Place, past Communipaw and Grand then all the way to Newark. It acutally goes right through the intersection that the school is currently located on. The #43, from the limited map on the NJ Transit site, starts at Exchange Place and runs up Newark Ave(crossing with Palisade Ave).

The NJ Transit website has a cool feature to find all types of service located near any location- definately more helpful than trying to read the scratched out numbers on Bus Stop signs!

Hope this info helps!

not in JC...but the Hoboken Beer and Soda Outlet on Observer Highway definately sells the big water cooler jugs. They are a drive thru operation- call ahead to check on hours....

If I am remembering correctly, there is a florist on Central Ave- near Gherig's Bakery that at least used to sell them...

Hope this helps...

VIVA LOS HEIGHTS!

You are moving about 3 blocks from me. It is a great neighborhood- lots of families and people from everywhere. My upstairs neighbors have a whole dog mafia thing going on- I am sure you will see lots of people and their dogs, both at Pershing Field and "Mosquito Park" . There is a deli at the corner of Beacon and Summit Aves. Max, the owner, makes fantastic breakfast sandwiches and his large cappucinos are only $1.50!

Grocery shopping is a bit of a pain. The Stop and Shop is not the best. However, after growing up in Hoboken, and seeing what that has turned into, I will never leave the Heights!

Safety- just use the same caution you would anywhere. Lock your car doors, and your house. Welcome to The Heights!
