Re: Healy orders Fulop campaign to stop running ads featuring Dwek

The Mayor's campaign has insisted that the Jersey City Board of Education pay his campaign's legal fees for his fruitless fishing expedition. So our children have to foot the bill for Healy's campaign trick.

The taxpayers of Jersey City footed the bill for the Healy campaign?s frivolous lawsuit over whether Chico can use the name he as used for his entire life on the ballot.

I wonder who will pay for this lawsuit?

I wish it were true that Fulop is winning hands down, but you underestimate the strength of the machine, the cost of apathy and the risks of overconfidence. The race is very tight and can still go either way.

As I noted below, it was not Fulop's choice to go this way, but once Healy tried to paint Fulop as just another corrupt politician, he had to fight back.

Fulop didn't run these ads until Healy sent a mailer out accusing Fulop of corruption in connection with the Board of Education. I think "What Is Steve Fulop Hiding?" was the headline on the mailer.

As predicted, the Board of Education fishing expedition has produced nothing except legal bills which Healy has the nerve to insist the Board of Education must pay, not Healy's campaign

He had the opportunity to keep the campaign constructive by following Fulop's lead and focusing on the issues, but instead he threw faux mud. I can't believe he has the shamelessness to cry foul when Fulop fights back.

What a loser.

He claims to be able to do the best job for everyone - but when he's among his loyal followers it's straight US vs THEM.

And he acts the same way as Mayor. His actual agenda is to care about the developers, the county pols, the HCDO faithful. For everybody else he'll show up to your event and sing a song, but forget it when it comes to funding or legislation or keeping a sound eye on the budget.

I can't get how anybody would try to defend or explain this one away. It's not just Healy's dis of newcomers - it's the way this translates into how his administration functions.

It also speaks to his character and the strength of his case for re-election. The interloper comment should be viewed in the context of telling the teachers and firefighters that they will lose their jobs if Fulop wins. Anyone so willing to use fear and misinformation to win doesn't deserve to.

What a waste of time. I can see objecting if he wanted to be listed as Khemraj "Honest" Ramchal, but what is wrong with using the actual name he is known by? What was the harm the Mayor's side was seeking to prevent? Just petty harassment.

I contested the first ticket I had online. I won. I have a few more during the period a couple of years ago when the city was rabid about it. I was given "parking" tickets twice for blocking an intersection at the Holland Tunnel approach. Nothing since that period.

Re: Steven Fulop for Mayor - MAY 14, 2013 JERSEY CITY ELECTION
#69

Home away from home

Democrat Steven Fulop has fought tirelessly for reform in Jersey City government, at first as a lonely voice on the City Council, but with persistence and hard work, now as the leader of a coalition that has reformed the Board of Education and has the majority of the City Council. This election is an opportunity to finally end the crony system of government and bring professionalism, integrity and discipline to our city's leadership.

I have wondered how a person could have the fortitude to take on the notorious Hudson County political machine, making slow and steady progress over many years. Why take on such a burden? How can he tolerate the frustration and set-backs?

The answer is character.

Steve was a Wall St. trader when the World Trade Center was attacked. Many professionals talked tough in those days. Steve quit to join the marines. He went to Iraq. That shows courage and a rare dedication to service.

Steve is a triathlete. That is impressive enough, but he has endured the ultimate test in that sport, the Ironman Triathlon--a all-day race that consists of a 2.4 mile swim followed immediately by a 115 mile bicycle race followed immediately by a full marathon--a 26.2 mile run. No stops. That shows a determination and fortitude most of us can't even imagine.

There are a lot of plans being put forth in this campaign. Steve has published his and they are impressive. The Mayor promises that he will get around to accomplishing many of the same things in his third term. Ultimately it may seem that it doesn't much matter who wins. But that is not true.

Remember character. Our current mayor seeks re-election despite the fact that many of his close political associates were arrested for corruption in fundraising for his last campaign. Some of them are still in prison. Healy barely managed to avoid indictment himself.

I'm sure Jerry Healy is a great guy to have a many beers with at Healy's Tavern. He seems like a nice guy. He had the good instincts to serve as Obama's state campaign chairman in 2008. He's bought back some guns. But people in Jersey City can look around them and see that many of our day-to-day problems have not been addressed in the past decade that he has been our mayor.

It's clearly time for fresh ideas, fresh energy and new leadership. We are fortunate to have an outstanding public servant to take us forward. We are fortunate to have Steven Fulop.

It's a city-wide popular vote. I've never heard of a city that has an electoral-college-type system. I doubt it would be constitutional.

The members of his congregation may want his love. The rest of us are entitled to his respect if he wants to be a public servant. He teaches that women should be subservient and gays are morally corrupt. He's entitled to his beliefs and we are entitled to our reactions to them.

The 2nd st. Light Rail stop is not new.

I believe JC is building a park and walkway that will connect the 2nd St stop to to the redevelopment area on the other side of the tracks. Then: More condos!!

Land development is far more a matter of business than it is of politics. The economy has not been right for any major development since 2008 but that seems to be changing quickly.

I believe the city did have some leverage over the developer of the Monaco and gave them an ultimatum to build or lose some variance or abatement. So that building was built despite the economy.

You keep repeating that people are attacking the man when that is not happening. It seems to me you believe any questions about his religious views and how they may affect his conduct in office are an attack. You also seem to regard voicing opposition to his religious views as an attack. If you speak for the Reverend, he needs a much thicker skin if he wants to be involved in Hudson County politics.

Rev. Gonzalez's church's CORE MISSION is to revolutionize schools and government in JERSEY CITY. He wants to "turn the city upside down." You can't logically have the goal of transforming a particular city into an expression of your vision of Christ and claim that your religious agenda is not relevant to seeking a role in that city's government.

I don't believe religious leadership disqualifies a candidate. I do believe the voters are entitled to ask questions, especially when the leader takes positions with respect to the role of women and the rights of women and gay people that are extreme and proclaims his mission is to bring his religious vision to an entire city.

How quickly we forget! Does anyone remember Mitt Romney , a BISHOP in the Mormon Church , who ran for PRESIDENT and was a former governor. He was also the son of two Mormons who also ran for elected office.

1. Romney was a former bishop. He stopped serving in that position 17 years ago. He resigned BEFORE he first ran for political office.

2. In Mormonism, every adult male is a priest and the position of bishop is not the same as in other churches. There are 28,000 Mormon bishops. It is a part-time position.

3. Romney's religion was an issue in the campaign and you did not hear him claim that asking questions about how it would affect his public policy was "attacking his religion."

A seat on the City Council is not some kind of prize for past accomplishments. It should go to the candidate who best demonstrates intelligence, hard work, effectiveness and integrity. Dan's endorsement of Healy calls his integrity into question. Even if Healy wins, Dan would have no allies on the council.

I know Candice and she demonstrates the qualities I listed above. Just as importantly, she will work closely with the Mayor if Fulop wins and stand firmly for reform if Healy wins.

The right to free speech does not give you the right to speak anywhere at any time. Most towns have laws against solicitation in confined public spaces where there is a captive audience. Subway stations and trains are a prime example.

Your name, JSleeze, fits you well. As an American citizen, I am exercising my right to speak at council meetings. People died in this country to give me that right. I personally think it is wrong to attack someone for his religious belief. Freedom of Religion is one of our cherish rights. In fact I remember John Paul 11 kissing the soil when he first visited the USA as pope. He talked about the beauty of religious freedom, something he did not have in Poland. In fact, he was ordained as a priest in secret. This candidate's views are similar to the Catholic Church, (exception woman's right to work. Many of the Vatican workers are woman, some are in executive positions), yet the world could not get enough information on the next pope! If conservative views are irrevelent, when why is the world all over Vatican City? JSleeze, have the courage to use your real name when you attack someone!

I'm not sure why this is so unclear to some people. He is not being "attacked" for his religious beliefs. Because he is a religious leader, he is being questioned about seeking the secular power to impose those beliefs on others.

His religious freedom is not at stake. His political career is. When a man who has dedicated his life to building an evangelical church suddenly seeks political authority, voters have the right to examine how the agenda of his church affects his public policy agenda. It is very unlikely that the interests of his church and his evangelical passion have nothing to do with his running for office

Voters don't pay particular attention to the religious beliefs of the average politician because the average politician is not a religious leader. I can assure you if a Catholic Bishop or a powerful Rabbi or Imam ran for political office, they would face the same questions.

It is extremely unusual for a religious leader to seek public office in this country. Most religious leaders have the sense to understand that the separation of church and state should be respected. They understand that anyone who has devoted their life to bringing other people to God and to teaching their understanding of God's will should not hold political authority in a diverse society.
