Anybody going to Crossfit JC? I've been meaning to check the place out, but haven't gotten around to it.

Thoughts?
Opinions?

I swung by the park this weekend. No progress on replacing the stinky bridge (pedestrian). More of the park is open to the public than previously, but they still have a lot of work ahead of them. The amount of goose poop in the fields is ridiculous. I am guessing the geese police weren't there over the winter. Hopefully things will pickup when the weather finally gets better.

If you are renting your place out, the broker will most likely charge 1 months rent to the new tenant unless your place completely sucks, than you should pay the fee.

Thanks!

Re: Jersey City - downtown/paulus hook nanny questions

Speaking from first hand experience...

Use care.com for your Nanny search. You will have to pay a nominal fee (essentially keeps the weirdos out) to access the site. Nanny's post their profiles and then you can choose which ones you want to contact to interview. Care.com will also perform the background and criminal check and provide you with the results. They essentially check every county court in the USA. You may want a more extensive background check if your care giver recently arrived in the USA.

Also, you get what you pay for... we had a Nanny who was relatively inexpensive (close to $11/hour), but we eventually had to let her go. If you can afford it, target the experienced nanny's in the $15-$20/hour range. Ultimately, this Nanny has the most important job in the world... taking care of your kids... Don't be cheap!!!

Lastly, please make sure the nanny speaks English and is in the US legally. I have heard of instances where illegal immigrants are afraid to call 911 in an emergency because they are afraid of getting in trouble/deported.

Good luck!!!

I can't confirm this is the same bridge alluded to in the email you quoted, but I was wondering about the pre-fab bridge that was seen yesterday and it jives perfectly with what you were told. Could it be we get a bridge BEFORE April?? I would be impressed. Maybe another "home run" for JC...

This is different from the flatbed trucks that have been there for some time with all those concrete slabs? (hopeful)

Man, I can't wait to get back over to the park... I love running and cycling over there!

Disclaimer: I am no expert, but I do enjoy articles about energy and alternative energy.

2 thoughts:

1. PSE&G will most likely balk at burying lines now that they just installed all those solar panels on power poles all over the state. The cost of which was passed on to the consumer. You would think it would be cheaper with all this solar power instantly available in the grid. One of the major expenses with solar farms is delivering the power to where it needs to be.

2. My ridiculous building (built in 2006) has a power pole outside, whereby the power then runs down the pole and enters the building underground. Our underground transformer survived Sandy, but eventually "crapped out" (technical term) after the last snow storm; it must have been weakened by Sandy.

It would have to be difficult to install underground utilities to many of the "historic" buildings in JC.

I've picked up steaks there a few times and they were pretty good. I have seen seafood there, but I am not necessarily willing to trust seafood from a place without a dedicated seafood counter... I don't know why.

We took my toddler to the JC Medical Center Emergency Room a few weekends ago for what turned out to be "the croup". The service and attention we got from the staff was absolutely top notch. Don't get me wrong... it's a pretty scary place... the clientele was shady (cops w/ "perps", corrections officers w/ prisoners, random crazies, etc), but the service was excellent. They are also a NJ state trauma center so there is always at least one of every type of specialist on duty 24/7. In a true emergency I think that is the place to go.

Do NOT go to Christ Hospital in the heights. In my 38 years, I never knew anyone who went into that place and came out better.

This is what I heard... No idea if it is 100% true...

They used to be row houses. Back in the '70's (or something like that) there was a nursing shortage in JC so a ton of Filipino nurses and nursing students came over from the Philippines to work and train at the now closed St. Francis Hospital on Hamilton Park (now condos). The "ugly" homes were built to house the nurses, etc. That would explain the "Manila Ave".

There also used to be a parking lot, a Church's Fried Chicken (at one point), and then an abandoned crack house that caught fire early one evening in the early 2000's.

Pershing Plaza across the street, prior to being built in the 1980s was a Shop Rite.

Also, a little known fact.... Christopher Columbus Drive used to be called Railroad Avenue because an elevated railroad track ran down the center of the road.

Luis Munoz Marin Blvd also used to simply be called "Henderson Street". I wonder if Henderson minds?

The location of Club H used to be a PATH train rail yard, then they shut that down, put up a Charter School in a series of trailer homes on the site and eventually built the buildings there today.

I love all this nostalgia... the place was a real dump. LOL

File a police report at the East District station. You will most likely get nowhere calling the property management company. You might get nowhere with the police department, but at least it will be recorded, they might be inclined to keep a closer eye on the lot (don't even get me started on the predatory towing), if cars start getting robbed they will at least have some record of prior incidents.

My wife's bicycle got stolen out of our garage a few years ago and I just shrugged it off as the price of living in Jersey City, but a cop friend told me to fill out a police report anyway. Otherwise, they have no idea anything nefarious is going on.

I avoid that parking lot at all costs...

Check the "Park Advisory" section on the LSP website. There is a link with a map of the open/closed areas. It hasn't been updated since December though.

I swung by both sides of the stinky bridge this weekend.

They definitely started clearing brush on the Liberty State Park side. Over on the Jersey Ave side there were about half a dozen flatbed trucks parked with what appeared to be concrete decking or some sort of concrete infrastructure. I am no engineer and have no idea what I was looking at, I don't even know if it was for the bridge or some other project in the area... but at least it was encouraging that something/anything will happen soon. (fingers crossed)
