The only semi community garden will be the one supervised by the folks who manage the garden pre school, and that will be for children.

The community strongly voted against any other community gardens in HP.

So there will be no other community garden in HP.

If you are interested in a community garden there is one on Brunswick St.

Re: Anti-Gay laws still on the books in Jersey City - no gay bars allowed?
#62

It's unlikely a gay bar would do particularly well in Jersey City. While there is an apparent gay population here that population is probably not big enough to support a gay bar or club. Keep in mind that not all gays like going to bars. Also, many if not most would frequent the bars in NYC which is just PATH ride away. Additionally, bars and clubs are less likely to be exclusively gay in such a small town, as it would be illegal to restrict patronage to gays only and the sentiments towards gay, particularly in places like JC have changed for the better. This would likely result in many straights going to the bar.

While Star Bar may not out right say they are a gay bar, (and I am not intimately familiar with their branding), it is commonly known as a gay bar in town. Though many straight people go there. Quote:

Robocub wrote:
While I was doing some volunteer work at the JC LGBT Pride festival on Saturday August 29th, I had been asking many people why there are no gay bars in JC. There is of course Star Bar but they don't call themselves a gay bar specifically, but a bar open to all people (as any bar should be). But of course we all like to frequent our favorite watering holes that cater to specific groups for the sheer comfort factor alone.

Anyway, during my query, I was told that there are still anti-gay laws on the books in JC that specifically prohibit "gay" bars from calling themselves a gay bar or even existing. I was also told that while Mayor Healy pretends to be a friend of the gay community, he actually has not done anything to repeal these antique anti-gay laws and has no intention of doing so. I don't doubt this at all personally.

So I was wondering if anyone who is more knowledgeable about this issue might chime in and enlighten me. I was quite disgusted to find this information out. It just seems so archaic and asinine. I would be more than happy to be informed that I was misinformed but I want to know the facts.

Tell him Jenny.

Also, people should be reminded the name of this town is NOT

Jersey FARMS; but it's Jersey CITY.

The size of the VVP dog run is very ideal, particularly considering the size of the park. Parkman has really extended himself to enhance its presence to integrate well with the rest of the other purposes for which people use the park. Yay parkman.

If you're going to be such a hater maybe you may want to consider moving.

I've been to the VVP dog run on many occasions over the last two and half years, almost always on the weekends when you would think it would be the most crowded.

My observations are the size of the dog run is most certainly adequate and the dogs in there (and I have never seen more than 7 dogs in there at once) have plenty of room to run until their hearts are content.

Any claim that's it's not adequate in size or any other metric is disingenuous and bratty.

Re: Renovation Update: Lead found in Hamilton Park

Just to illuminate salient pertinent parts of Glenn Wrigley's statement which was posted here:

1. The vast majority of the park has no or lead levels.
2. There was only one small area with lead.
3. Glenn says work is continuing with out delays.

From: "Glenn Wrigley"
Date: June 29, 2009 11:06:36 AM EDT
To: "Brian O'Reilly"

All test results came back with very low or non-existent contamination levels except for one, which is an area about 20 feet West of the gazebo. This one sample came back with a level for lead which is above DEP acceptable residential standards.

One suspect reason may be the bedding or base material under old concrete walkways, which are described as cinders. It was common back around the turn of the century and up to the 1930's for cinders from power generating plants to be used as a base course for concrete.

Much of the old walkways were removed in the 1970's renovation of the park, but some of the chips probably remained in this spot and were covered over with soil.

Meanwhile, other construction will continue without delay.

Vigilante,

Uuuum, first I didn't speculate anything nor did I say I was an expert on any of this. All I said was I conducted a little cursory research which suggested it's a simple matter of changing some soil and in some instances adding some plants that are particularly effective in diluting the effects of lead in soil.

Incidentally, would it surprise you to know that most of our homes have lead some where in them, including our back yards??

Based upon what has been reported from the contractors per the post on here, the workers seemed to have found a relatively small amount of lead in a designated area of the park. To my knowledge there hasn't been any reporting from the DEP on this.

But my point was THERE IS NO NEED TO JUMP TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ITS GOING TO TAKE A LONG TIME to remediate the problem, which seems almost innocuous.

Moreover, as evidenced by the continued work that's going on in the park, it seems renovation is continuing to progress on target.

So how long will the clean up take? Or is this just your speculation?

It at least seems that Dwek committed a crime unassociated to Hudson County officials; but somehow was designated to infiltrate a corrupt ring of politicians. But I haven't read anything that mentions why the recently arrested were targeted. Are there other non-officials who are also involved in other acts of corruption with these officials?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think all or any of these people are innocent, but it seems there are some missing components to the equation in terms of what has been reported. It looks a little like entrapment, but I don't know all of the facts.

It will be interesting to see how all of this unfolds and the defenses strategies.

At the last HPNA meeting, did the city architect actually say that the progress of the park is far behind schedule and not likely to make the target date of late November?

Or have you just come to the conclusion on your own that the renovation will not be complete on time, because the project seems very involved?

I actually do believe that Enos Jones was suggested as a place for a dog run, but many of the dog owners rallied against it as not appropriate for their pooches. But I could be wrong. This issue has been bantered around so much, it's too hard to keep track.

Of course if you're interested in making that happen, you may want to undertake a little research, get some of the other dog owners involved in the effort in addition to many of the neighbors and present the plan to Fulop.

Chances are random, harried phone calls in addition to posts on this site will not advance the initiative.

There are frequently accidents on this corner because people speed up Monmouth and the house on the north west corner of 8th and Monmouth has had a few cars fly into it. Monmouth needs more stop signs and the direction of the traffic should stagger every few blocks to slow up traffic.

I like the idea of changing the direction of the one way the on Monmouth, Coles, Jersey and Erie every three or 4 blocks, making it frustrating for people to cut through downtown. This will both slow up traffic in addition to dissuading folks from cutting through downtown.

How about just making it a giant pain for anyone to use the residential streets in downtown Jersey City (focusing on VVP and Harsimus/Hamilton) for anything except going to/from home? Add more stop signs on Jersey and Erie, and then enforce them (and all others in the neighborhoods) so vigorously that practically everyone driving "Jersey style" through them gets a ticket! Throw in 20 mph speed limits on all except the main arterial streets, and people will stop cutting through downtown to hit the turnpike in no time.

The balloting process for the park renovation permitted for voting for a skate park in HP based upon comments made by a small group. But the majority of the community did not support it.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen a Bocci Ball court in the park. That didn't even make it to the balloting.

That phase of the renovation planning is long past us. Of course everyone is free to express their opinions. Still insulting your neighbors doesn't advance any initiative.

Concerns about how the renovation moves a long is the issue at hand. While I'm a proponent of healthy skepticism and scrutiny, opinions should be based upon the information that's provided and communicated instead of conjecture. Last Saturday in HP, there was an advertised meeting about the renovation where folks asked a bunch of interesting questions many of which have been asked and incorrectly answered on this site.

I don't know from where you got that information; but the "temp park" is a recent development and not part of the original plan around renovating the park. So there was no early plan to set up a "temp park" before renovation began.

Your point on the liquor license is rather interesting. Under it's last two restaurant names and owners, they were never able to serve any alcohol due to a lack of liquor license. I moved to downtown in 2003, and there was a nice looking Italian restaurant there, with not so good food, but I forget the name of it. Then it became something else for awhile, and again no liquor license.

I do not know how much you're asking for that unit. I imagine larger units are more expensive and warrant occupancy by perhaps a family. A part of the reason why it may remain vacant could be the time of the year in conjunction with a sense of uncertainty in job stability. But keep in mind one bedroom apartments in Manhattan are still at the $2,500 a month range.

There does seem to be a lot of "For Rent" signs downtown JC. A One of my tenants moved out because she lost her job. However, filling the vacancy was not a problem. It seems there are quite a few folks from Manhattan and Hoboken looking to reduce their rental costs by moving to JC. I suppose its a consequence of a year of weak bonus in conjunction with a greater interest in saving money for the impending rainy day. There were a lot of people expressing interest in the apartment offering that explanation.

It's really not that bizarre at all. Competing business and political leaders often gather at retreats or other less formal gatherings where they share best practices, establish metrics, share challenges and exchange ideas. I think it's rather mature that two people who are friends or are friendly can engage in healthy competition to advance their political or social interest. For better or worse, many politicians have started using Facebook to reach out to their constituency. Reading some deeper meaning into it may be a bit misguided.

Certainly, this is no where near as bizarre as a drunken mayor, sitting/sleeping on his front porch for the world to see him in all his glory, or just his angry inch.. Only to follow that act with a fraternity style drunken brawl at the Jersey Shore. "Where were you when the lights went out at Dee Jayees?"

I would hope that people who are most interested in the standards and goals of our political leaders will be more focused on holding their feet to the fire on core issues including but not limited to:

-the quality of our schools.
-the condition of our sewage system
-crime
-evaluating the historic wisdom of selling JC in chunks to the cheapest of developers.
