Thank you for this Althea. I thought there must have been some error in the placement of these signs. Quote:

Althea wrote:
The pet free lawns

The Director of Public Works, Rodney Hadley, designated 50% of the park pet free. He provided the contractor with a map that clearly delineated which lawns would be pet free and which would be pet friendly.

The contractor made a mistake which we hope will be corrected as soon as possible. The two quadrants of passive space on the 8th Street side of the park are to be pet friendly.

I'm so sorry this happened because it only adds to the bad feelings on all sides. Remember that those of us really using the park are much more in tune than a lot of the City employees merely following instructions. They don't always take action with full knowledge or compassion.

Councilman Fulop has asked them to correct the signage in our shared park as soon as possible.

BTW - Children are not to be left unattended in any part of the park INCLUDING the playground.

This post made me giggle. I think its funny and meant to be so.
It also reminded me of the time recently when I was shopping at Jacks Toy Shop on Jersey Ave. I was standing at the counter choosing a few small stuffed toys for my dogs, yes my dogs. My human kids are grown and don't borrow my car cause I don't have one :)
Anyway there I was standing there and this little blonde 4-5 year old kid smacked me in the butt while screaming NO!. Apparently she wanted all the toys in the shop to herself and was reprimanding me for being there. Her Mom had a large collection of toys on the counter for this child and was continuing to shop for more. Instead of leaving all her items on the counter and whisking the child out of the shop immediately as a lesson learned for hitting a complete stranger on the butt she simply said in a regular speaking voice "oh that's not nice"...
Now I am not a perfect human parent or a perfect canine parent but I will never forget the way this woman handled this abominable behavior, and actually rewarded it. It was so outrageous it became hysterical.
Like JCProducers post.

Children should be seen and not heard. I still believe that. Leave your kids at home so I can eat and drink in peace. I find it strange that they are near me. I think they are pretty much up to no good. I still remember when I was 11 in Disney Land on line for the Tea Cup ride and small child was kicking my ankles. He was about 7. Since then, I pretty much determined these kids are up to no good.

My dog however, cleans up after itself, talks to me about Chaucer. Debates the merits of smooth vs electric jazz and never kicks me in the ankles. My dog is also cheaper then your kid. And my dog, does not take the car on the weekend so he can bang his girlfriend in the park. My dog also does not go to spring break in Cancun where he dives in the pool from the 10th floor and dies. In a sense, my dog is 100% more times reliable then your kid.

I think the park is magnificent, like walking into Oz. It was well worth waiting for and I am so grateful we have it. I also agree dogs should not be in the children's playground just as children do not belong in the dog runs. Really for us dog owners it's about safety. In the large dog run when dogs start their joyful high speed running even smaller framed adults can get knocked off their feet, no place for a child say under 12 years of age. If you have a dog and a child (12 or older) your child should remain seated while in the run. Children under 12 also do not belong in the small dog run, again for safety sake. Strollers have no place in any dog run. Dogs are curious by nature and will inspect the thing, and definately pee on it too.
Believe me I know it's tough raising children and having a dog. Its tough to have all their needs met, but you will have to exercise them separately I am afraid.
I understand the signs are on order and I hope the dog run signs come soon too :)

I also dislike the unleashed dogs that invite themselves to start bothering my dogs. What can you do? I enjoy sitting by the water without being a nuissance or having others disrupt me. I avoid the children and the parents are usually very considerate and thankful for that. I'm glad they're writing out tickets. The amount of unleashed dogs there is really ridiculous. Lincoln park has a huge dog run and van vorst is only a short walk away.

Agreed Croft, it is lovely, such a shame. Great post!

This is a very important question many forget to ask...
Most facilities are not staffed 24 hours and the dogs are crated over night, which is not an issue for most but best to always ask if this is a concern.

Yes, Graceland was the previous daycare/boarding place in this location and it was horrid:

I know some folks report positive experiences with commercial boarding facilities but I always prefer small private in-home pet care options. Or better yet, if an option, friends or family caring for your pet :)

Agreed Vig.
Hysterics and false accusations are not helpful to anyone involved here, and ultimately won't help find out who the dog owner is. Such as the wrongful comments about the Husky owner/walker on this thread.

What I think would be helpful here though, is if the folks who have direct contact with the Jindo owner encourage him to meet with the woman involved in the incident. Very Simple really. This way he can help the community found out who did this. If you should see him please ask him to contact jcbiscuit and I will do the same. For me it's really not about false accusations but rather pitching in to help figure out who this dog owner is. If I were in a position where I even suspected myself and my dog were being accused of some wrong doing I would step forward to clear the record and help the authorities focus elsewhere. I would want to know about it too, right away. I think the best approach here is for anyone reading this who knows the Jindo guy? Have him contact jcbiscuit, that would be helpful.

JCbiscuit if the dog is a Jindo, I may be able to help you. Please PM me.

Sorry I do not know how to post photos here but just have your neighbor Google Jindo. It's a Korean breed and if it is the person I am thinking of the dog is constantly off leash and equiped with a shock collar. They are sort of a smaller husky looking breed, but not a husky.

And No, It certainly is NOT the husky guy spoken of earlier.
He NEVER, EVER has his dogs off leash and does not have attack dogs.

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... y_city_council_fails.html

Amy Sara Clark / The Jersey JournalAnimal activists, including Kristine Murphy, center, without sign, listen as the Animal Control Ordinance is debated at Jersey City Hall on June 18, 2009.
About a dozen of people pleaded with the Jersey City Municipal Council to pass an ordinance to create of an Animal Control Commission to oversee the city's Division of Animal Control at last night's City Council meeting.

But despite their pleading, the council decided not to vote on the ordinance. Instead they decided to send a directive memo to Harry Melendez, director of the Jersey City's Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the Division of Animal Control Division, telling him to submit a plan for correcting the division's problems by August 1.

Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop first introduced the ordinance in April, shortly after the notorious Daisy-the-cat incident in which two animal control officers dumped an escaped pet in Lincoln Park instead of bringing her to a shelter.

Since then residents have been coming to City Council meetings to complain that Jersey City's Division of Animal Control isn't doing its job. Several residents complained of rude and unresponsive behavior from Animal Control Officers including one who said that at least two stay cats had been killed by a dog that Animal Control officers refused to trap.

Last night he said it didn't seem as though the ordinance was going to pass, so he went with the memo as a means of at least moving the issue forward.

Afterward, Ward E resident Kristine Murphy, who supports the ordinance, said she understood why Fulop essentially withdrew the ordinance and pushed the idea for the memo instead.

What she said she doesn't understand is why the council is so against creating the committee.

"I'm just so very concerned about why the council people are against this ordinance passing," she said. "To me it's sort of a no brainer."

"She added, it makes me think that there's something going on that we don't know."

+2!

Hate this place. Just had to turn away a poor family that wanted me to care for their little puppy this weekend :(
I require Giardia testing for any dog in my care that uses pads. Needless to say, being a Pet Company Newport Mall
purchased pup she was Giardia positive and I was unable to provide boarding for her :(
I also second the Canis Minor suggestion for food and supplies. Folks may have their issues with the place but I must give credit to them for requiring Giardia testing for their day care and boarding dogs. Knowing a lot of their client dogs are purchased at the mall and the Newport dog run is a swamp of Giardia, they started this testing years ago. Wise move, and something no other day care or boarding facility requires. Good Job Canis!
