Kudos to the knife sharpener in VV. He spent 15 minutes or so sharpening and repairing my expensive knife which was damaged by another knife sharpener. And for an extremely reasonable fee.

I've been through AT&T, Verizon and currently have T-Mobile. I plan to switch back to AT&T after using T-Mobile for 2 years. The coverage isn't nearly as good as either Verizon or AT&T in the NYC or JC area.

If you decide on AT&T or T-Mobile, I highly recommend going through harbormobile.com. [They don't offer any other carriers.] I've been using them for 2 years and they're a pleasure to deal with, not to mention NJ based. I found their rates to be cheaper than going direct through the carriers.

Thanks for the responses.

Call me a wuss, but I have an innate fear of getting lost or confused with connecting to the airtrain or messing with busses. It's been 2 forevers since I lived in NYC and am no longer familiar with mass transit except for subways and some busses. My fear is that I'll miss the flight.

Otoh, I like the idea of taking the PATH to the city and then a taxi. Then again, the fare is fixed to JFK at $52 which means about $60 with tip.

I was hoping to find a convenient shuttle. Anyway, I think I'll book the best flight regardless of airports and hope to figure out the best way to get there without getting lost.

I could take EWR, but that means connecting flights and a minimum of 13 hours from A to B.

What's a fairly economical and hassle-free way to get to JFK and LGA? I'm tired of spending in the neighborhood of $100 for NJ taxis or Uber.

My thoughts exactly. Also, price point. My limit is $10. I would be into 2 or 3 meals per week.

I have no idea what the economics are of pursuing this, but my guess is that it's worth a try. It could possibly lead to a brick and mortar store with more offerings.

Fresh Direct is my source now and I'm somewhat satisfied but not completely. The number of healthy meals is limited. There's no one else that I know of though, even Whole Foods. WF doesn't offer low calorie / healthy meals except salads, at least from I've seen. FD's prices range is from about $8 - $15, not cheap. Their portions are also large for me and I end up discarding 25% of the meal.

This is really an off the wall crazy post. My understanding is that this McDonalds is not much different than a food truck except it's brick and mortar. You order outside... there is no inside for the public. I don't think it's legally considered a restaurant, the same as food trucks are not considered restaurants. Most every municipality has requirements regarding restrooms for restaurants... if I recall, Jersey City goes by the number of tables to determine if a restroom is required and how many.

I don't get the relationship to the argument. I can dress up as a woman and use the women's room. Or you can dress as a man and use the men's room. What does transgender have to do with that?

Besides, what's the big deal? No one can really see anything anyway. If you're gone to Broadway shows, women use the men's room all the time because the women's room is too crowded during intermission. I have no problem with that.

I've seen even very high end (read: expensive) restaurants in the city allow you to bring your own champagne even though they serve the same or similar champagne, for a corkage fee (shouldn't it be an 'uncorking fee'?) For example if only the '96 Dom will do but La Sirena only has the current year. Heaven forfend!

I find that hard to believe. It's no different than bringing in a coke to a restaurant that serves coke. It happened in my restaurant occasionally and it pissed me off, though I didn't say anything. Is it any different than bringing in food and ordering a drink? And yes, I've had people bring in food. I didn't allow that though.

$25 is the typical corkage fee, at least in Manhattan. Some restaurants charge less, more or nothing, but that is not the norm. The logic behind it is you're depriving the restaurant of sales as well requiring them to do extra work - open the bottle and provide/clean glasses.

I finally got a chance to try it out last night, Sunday.

I like the place very much. The food was top notch. We had kebabs - lamb beyti for me and beef for my friend. The lamb beyti was full of exotic Turkish flavors that went well together. I thought the beef was a little tough, but still very good.

However, the price point is a little high for what it is. I'm not sure they even figured out what they want to be, upscale or an affordable family place or a delivery place.

While the service was okay, it was nothing more. The server was an order taker. She didn't exude much warmth or friendliness and her description of the lamb kebab left something to be desired. Failure to pour our water when the busser [?] put the water bottle down and the failure to open our wine until I finally had to ask 5 or so minutes after being seated were faux pas. Perhaps I'm more critical than most since I'm in the business and I can't help but evaluate and judge such things. When I pay $40 for dinner for 2 without liquor, I expect more.

Dessert was not offered, though I flagged the server down to get turkish coffee.

On the plus side as far as service, there was only a 5 minute wait after we ordered to get our food.

These negatives will not have much of an effect on giving them my business again since in the scheme of things, they were not a big deal. The food is the attraction. However, the prices might hold me back from going there often.

Once again, I am imposing on you for dinner suggestions. I'm looking for a simple restaurant with at least some healthy options. Something a bit above a diner if you will. I was thinking Marco & Pepe or Madame Claude or something along those lines, though I don't think either has any or many healthy options. Downtown or Bergen-Lafayette are preferable. Thanks.

I totally spaced and forgot that Saturday is also my birthday. So I'll allow myself to spend a little more.

At this point, it's a tossup between Satis and Porto Leggrero. I never ate at Satis but have eaten at and enjoyed Porto Leggrero.

I know Porto Leggrero is conducive for conversation, but is that the case with Satis?

It's been asked before, though the last thread wandered aimlessly off course almost immediately. So, apologies in advance to bring this up again, and Dan, feel free to merge this, though I know i don't have to tell you that.

I'll also blab another moment to say it's embarrassing to ask about this. I should know! I've lived in JC 15 years, work in the restaurant biz and am a "retired" foodie. However, there's been lots of new restaurants opening in the last couple of years and I know nothing about them. The last places I ate at were Lighthorse Tavern (too loud) and Skinner's Loft (an option).

Ideally I'd like to find a place within walking distance to the waterfront with an average cover of about $50 give or take, which would include a bottle of wine. It should be quiet so one can carry on a conversation without screaming (which seems to rule out most places) and perhaps a little romantic. It will be on a Saturday night.

Thanks.

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

I think Murray ignores the reality of medallion JC cabs. I continue to use medallion cabs as well as Uber/Lyft. I only use the medallion cabs since I don?t have to wait for one when I get out of the PATH on Grove. Many medallion cars are downright unsafe and for the life of me, I don?t know how they pass inspection. I never came across an unsafe Uber/Lyft car and I use the service extensively. Uber/Lyft may not be totally above board with their pricing all the time (they recently lost a lawsuit on the $1 safe driver charge), but that doesn?t compare to the fast meters I regularly get in medallion cabs. At least Uber/Lyft charges are transparent, including the surge pricing as well as safe driver charge. In addition, there is a vetting process with Uber/Lyft. I have to believe it?s at least as good as the one for medallion cabs considering some of the characters I?ve gotten that drive medallion cabs. I never once had a bad experience with a Uber/Lyft driver or felt unsafe in any respect. Not true for the medallion cars and drivers.

However, the bottom line is that times are changing and laws need to adapt. Medallions should try to compete instead of fight a losing battle.

I don't know enough about the charge of rapes and crimes by Uber/Lyft, but my guess is that they it is exaggerated. I never heard of 3 rapes referred to in JC. Is that fiction?

If Murray is so concerned about the lack of standards for Uber/Lyft, why doesn?t he instead call on the city to adopt stricter standards for them instead of banning them? Frankly, I think each service has a place. Murray would do his constituency a favor by trying to adapt and make improvements in the medallion taxi industry instead of trying to fight progress.

Lyft has had a promotion this month in JC, 25% off I think. Good deal. They're really no different from Uber and that's not a bad thing. The wait times seem to have gotten much better and competitive compared to Uber.

However, this morning Lyft pulled the trick Uber drivers have been guilty of. Demand has made taxis difficult to get since the snow and surge rates have applied with Uber & Lyft. Ok, I understand. However, I had 3 rides cancelled this morning by Lyft because my ride to the PATH station wasn't far enough.

I didn't know that Lyft drivers knew your destination before picking you up, assuming you keyed it in. I always do -- Uber drivers don't see the destination, or at least didn't, until they picked you up and I foolishly assumed it was the same with Lyft. After the first cancellation, I stopped keying in my destination. The next 2 drivers called and I didn't pick up. One cancelled after a few minutes. The other guy just kept going to what looked like NYC. I had to cancel and was charged $5.

Uber is really no different in this respect. However, a warning... don't key in the destination with Lyft if it's a short ride until the driver arrives.

Edit to add their reply which came as I was typing this. Too little. No assurances it won't happen again or disciplining drivers.
====================
Thanks for taking the time to reach out. We understand how frustrating it can be to be charged a cancellation fee.

I've gone ahead and refunded the $5 cancellation fee you incurred for this ride. Depending on your bank, it may take 3?5 business days for a refund to appear in your account.

For your trouble, I have credited your account with $5 off a ride. This is good for one ride only, and will cover up to $5 of that ride. Anything that goes over that amount will be charged to your credit card. Check out the 'Payment' section of your Lyft app to view your current available credits and their expiration date.

For information on our cancellation and no-show policies, visit our Help Center at https://help.lyft.com/hc/en-us/article ... ellation-Policy-Passenger.

We're happy to have you as part of the community, and hope your future experiences with Lyft are positive ones. Please let us know if there's anything else we can help you with!

Re: Thinking about renting on Monitor Street Bergen / Lafayette

I was gonna stay out of this as I have mixed feelings, though not personally.

I've lived on Monitor near Communipaw for 5 years. I live in the Foundry and there are 20 apartments whose entrance is on Monitor. Personally, I find the area near ideal. But it is not for everyone.

The immediate surrounding area can be on the sketchy side at night and there is undoubtedly more crime than downtown. I don't venture out that much at night alone and I personally never had a problem. But I hear stories. The amenities are poor, but I don't care much about that. Parking is so-so. I gave up my car because I don't need it, but I never had a real problem with parking when I did have it. If worse comes to worse, your daughters can park in the Light Rail lot.

I especially like the proximity to LSP where I go often. I like the peace and quiet. And housing prices are a steal compared to downtown.

Anyone wanting to live here should visit here multiple times during the day and night. I made the mistake of not doing that when I rented an apartment on Woodward, which is 3 blocks west of Pacific. It is a great area during the day but crime-ridden at night. I would never live just west of Pacific again for that reason. But it's a different world just a short distance away on Monitor.

I agree with most of the previous comments. Again, different strokes and it really depends on one's comfort level.

She related to us that she had her own experience with Lyft where she almost missed her flight because a driver refused to take her there.

Lyft and Uber are relying on the fact that the amount of customer complaints about poor, unreliable, or unsafe service is outweighed by the convenience. I suspect they are correct in their calculations, but its a bit of a gamble. The question is how many instances of such failures will be enough to tip the scales in favor of regulation. If it's just a question of occasional dissatisfaction with service and surge pricing, they will likely be able to continue without much challenge. If there are enough incidents such as accidents uncovered by insurance and drivers assaulting or harassing passengers then they may have to accept some regulation.

I have also commented on bad experiences with Uber. However, those bad experiences pale in comparison to the experiences I've had with local cabs. And JPhurst, you have consistenly criticized ride-sharing services, mostly on the "insurance issue." Why would you put your family in Lyft if you were that concerned?

Anyway, given the shape that many of the local cabs are in, it's a wonder there aren't more accidents. As for insurance, Uber has consistently beaten that argument as fictitious.

I don't think you quite understand how Uber works for drivers. Once a driver accepts a fare, he is no longer able to accept other fares. So, he HAS to cancel, otherwise he risks losing out on whatever he fares he is hoping to get. As soon as you tell him you have no intention to cancel, he will get pissy, and after a minute or so, he WILL cancel.

I got an A+ in Uber class and have been using it long enough and often enough to know, haha. Yes, I know they can't take another rider until the present ride is canceled, but some of them are a**holes and don't wanna cancel and not risk a mark against their records. Apparently, they'd rather play chicken with the rider and not take another rider. Or, a more likely scenario, they're on their way to NYC on the highway and gave up on getting a passenger to NY and don't care if they can pick up a ride.

Advice needed...

I have to be at 1st Ave & 38th St. at 6:30am. Leaving from the Liberty State Park light rail area. Downtown Limo wants $45 + toll +7% CC surcharge, though I might pay cash. I can't chance not being there relatively on time. Can I do much better with Uber and can I expect to have no problem getting a ride at around 5:45am?

Not to get all technical, but the rates have gone up 60 cents... the safety charge or whatever it's called went from $1 to $1.60. I finally heard from them today. It's the same as every other letter. A generic apology. <> They did not address my concerns at all, but then again, form letters rarely do. I took a JC white cab from Grove again and another excellent experience. I talked to the driver and asked if anything changed. He says they are trying to be more competitive and ownership has heard the complaints and obviously has made changes. Boodipoh... yes, they don't force you to cancel. How can they? But in a way they do. If the driver doesn't cancel the trip and drives the opposite way, what are you gonna do? I don't have time to play games and play chicken with the driver. I need a cab when I need a cab.

Fwiw, I ended up getting credit for the rides that I cancelled after the driver said he wasn't coming.

Uber never responded to my 2 complaints, one from yesterday, repeated today. My complaints were not inflammatory, just the facts. And the fact that I later realized that it was a driver who had done this to me once before didn't sit well. He probably laughed when I said, "I'm going to report you."

Call me spiteful or whatever you like.
For the first time in about 18 months, I took a white cab from Grove Path. Perhaps it was luck of the draw, but the car was nothing like the cars I remember. Smoke-free, relatively clean, a working meter, a driver not talking on his cell - something I was not accustomed to with local cabs. PLus, the convenience of not having to take out my phone and summon a ride, wait 10 minutes or more, too many times get a driver who couldn't find me (in front of Starbucks on Columbus) and get a driver who blindly followed a navigator which sometimes gave out of the way directions. What a pleasant change! Same price. I might do this more often if this is now the situation.

Uber is a tough habit to break, but I took step one.

I'm a long time Uber/Lyft user and mostly satisfied... up until recently.

In the last several months, I've had an unusual number of drivers call shortly after they accept my ride to ask where I'm going. This is a BIG no no. It quickly became apparent that the only reason they were calling is that they wanted to go to Manhattan. Some were a little more devious and ask innocuous questions before asking "where to?" Others would just come out and say that they'll only go to Manhattan. Some would refuse to cancel and force me to cancel making it look like they did no wrong. Yes, there's been that many over the past few months.

I was tempted to tell them that I was going to midtown to get him to pick me up. But I don't really have time to waste if they refuse or worse, if they go Uber-ballistic on me.

I understand their dilemma, but they signed up for it.

I always report the drivers to Uber. I always get a credit and they always say they're doing their best to throw out these problem drivers. Since the problem seems to continue unabated, I wonder how much they're really doing. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Should tipping be eliminated at eateries?
#89
Home away from home

Tipping is cultural. It?s highly insulting in some cultures, i.e., Japan. On the opposite end, in the U.S., it seems it?s expanded to more and more retail stores and services. It?s been in existence, depending on who you want to believe, since Biblical times or the Civil War. [There?s some fascinating stuff out there on its history.]

It is not easy to change societal norms as they are ingrained in the culture. To bring this more down to earth, or to the matter at hand, restaurants are structured to be dependent on tips to pay part of the staff. People are accustomed to tipping waiters and feel empowered by doing so. It?s the system, no matter how irrational it is. Rationally speaking, waiters are no more deserving of tips than anyone else who works in the service industry. However, we are speaking of a cultural practice that has become ingrained over many years. It is not going to change until restaurant owners decide as a group to change it.

A small or little known restaurant has little power in this regard. Customers wouldn?t patronize it because prices would have to rise. However, when you have industry giants like Danny Meyers and others taking the lead, it is possible to see the end of tipping in restaurants. It is unlikely that Meyers will lose customers due to his highly rated and popular restaurants. He is not the first well-known restaurateur to eliminate tips and he will not be the last. It is only then the lesser known restaurateur can also eliminate tips.

A small example of how tipping is ingrained in our cultures? I worked at a touristy hotel restaurant in midtown. Most customers were European and South American. Waiters used to fight not to have foreigners sit in someone else?s section. Even though most Europeans are aware of the American tipping custom, they still choose to tip as if they?re in Europe. Managers would approach guests on occasion when a waiter received a pittance of a tip to ask if there was a problem. Very often the customer would respond by saying that we should change our custom.

It?s ironic. The customer will pay about the same for his spaghetti and meatballs whether there?s tipping or not. The increase in prices due to an increase in wages will keep the final price to the customer about the same.
