Diversity council cancels Jersey City counter-rally
By Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal

October 21, 2009, 12:21PM

Hudson Diversity Action Council planned to protest Westboro Baptist Church's visit to Dickinson High School next week, but will instead ignore the anti-gay group.

"We felt the initial need to make sure the students in Jersey City knew that we were supporting them, however I think there are much better ways to do that outside of engaging with this particular group," said Walt Boraczek, president and founder of the Hudson Diversity Action Council.

The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church is known for its anti-gay rallies and has made headlines by protesting at military funerals, saying the combat deaths are God's vengeance for the military allowing gays to serve.

The group has 12 protests planned across the state Oct. 27 and 28 including the stop at Dickinson High School, rallies outside Hoboken City Hall and the United Synagogue of Hoboken as well as the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus.

Westboro plans to protest outside Dickinson at 2:55 p.m. Oct. 28

We don't have FIOS TV, just internet and the router seems OK. Most likely the ONT is bad according to FIOS support.

The last time it was down was closer to a month ago, not two weeks as stated in my previous post. At that time the FIOS tech said the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) might have to be replaced, so we may give that a try. FIOS is reliable, but hardware does fail.

Our FIOS drops out every few weeks or so. We have to call and convince the tech to do a reset on their end. This morning the FIOS was down, and the tech was adamant that the problem was on our end. Wrong. After they did a reset it was back up.

Jersey City Councilman Phil Kenny pleads guilty in massive NJ corruption case
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
October 06, 2009, 12:50PM

Resized Image

Jersey City Councilman Philip J. Kenny pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark this afternoon to accepting $,5000 in bribes as part of the massive New Jersey corruption case that broke over the summer.

Kenny, who represents the city's West Side, Ward B, hadn't been charged in the original roundup of suspects.

In pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, Kenny admitted that in March he met with a government informant posing as a developer wanting to grease the wheels for a fictitious development project on Garfield Avenue.

Two meetings were cited -- both in Jersey City restaurants and both attended by Kenny, the informant and an unnamed "Jersey City Official.''

At the first meeting, Kenny agreed to accept $5,000 broken down into two $2,500 contributions from "straw donors'' for his Friends of Phil Kenny war chest in exchange for future official favors in getting zoning and other approvals.

At the second meeting, he accepted the money, knowing it was illegal to do so.

Kenny is out on $55,000 bail until his Jan. 12 sentencing when he faces 12 to 24 months in prison.

Kenny has been in office only since the spring.

He was appointed to the Ward B seat on April 6 after Councilwoman Mary Spinello resigned, just weeks before the May 12 election. She had left to head the Jersey City Parking Authority, and the council voted to replace her for the short stretch in what some deemed an inappropriate attempt to give Kenny the "incumbent'' advantage come Election Day.

Kenny ran on Mayor Jerramiah Healy's ticket and was elected on the first ballot.

Before Kenny's appointment, Council President and fellow Healy running mate Mariano Vega sang his praises.

"He's been a strong activist for a long time,'' Vega, who has since been charged in the corruption sting, said. "It's an appointment of someone I think people can trust.''

In addition to his council post, Kenny is the office manager for Hudson County Board of Freeholders and has been a state Democratic committeeman; West Side ward leader for

Obama presidential campaign; trustee of the Lincoln Park Little League, and an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City.
He is the sixth person -- all from Jersey City -- to plead guilty in the sweep that netted 44 men and women from New Jersey and New York on a variety of charges that ranged from political corruption to the sale of body parts.

On Sept. 24, unsuccessful Ward C candidate James "Jimmy" King pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from a government informant posing as a developer.

Before that, former Jersey City Housing Authority commissioner Edward Cheatham, former Hudson County Superintendent of Elections investigator Denis Jaslow, and former Jersey City municipal employees Maher Khalil and Guy Catrillo also pleaded guilty to their roles in the scandal.

Call a local taxi such as A-1 just as you land and they'll instruct you where to meet the cab at the upper level. That's the best deal, and works out best during off hours.

DowntownWilly/DonaldJ - any comment on being a being a "bad judge of character"?

From jerseycityindependent.com

By Jon Whiten ? Jul 23rd, 2009 ? Category: Blog, News, Politics

FBI and IRS agents are reportedly making roundups all across the state in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in New Jersey?s scandal-plagued history. According to news reports from NBC and the Bergen Record, City Council president Mariano Vega and deputy mayor Leona Baldini are among those arrested, as is former City Council candidate Michael Manzo. Other Hudson County politicians, including newly-elected Hoboken mayor Peter Camarano, have also reportedly been arrested.

UPDATE, 9:23 AM: The Record reports that former council candidate LaVern Webb-Washington, as well as Jersey City health officer Joseph Castagna and local Republican John Guarini have also been arrested. Pictures at NBC show that former Ward E candidate Guy Catrillo was also arrested.

The federal agencies are mum thus far on the specific charges, but a press conference is expected later today as suspects appear in U.S. District Court in Newark. We?ll bring you any of the significant details as they emerge.

WRONG! I assume your friend is probably stoned/drunk so doesn't want to talk to police, but HAVE HIM VISIT IN PERSON TOMORROW to fill out a report. It DOES make a difference because it will be reflected in the crime stats. If a person is out there with a gun, IT MUST BE REPORTED. A report has to be filed with the police, and don't let the police try to talk your friend out of filing a report.

Update: Car crashes into electric pole causing blackout
by Paul Takahashi/ Jersey Journal
Monday July 06, 2009, 4:41 PM

Lindenhurst, NY, man, who allegedly told police he was using cocaine for two days, was arrested on drug and DUI charges after he crashed into a parked car, a telephone pole and then the front of a house in Jersey City Sunday night, reports said.

The accident happened at 11:31 p.m. on July 5, at the intersection of Monmouth Street and Eighth Street. Douglas Tator, 28, was driving a Ford Escape when he jumped the curb, hit a parked Toyota Prius and split a telephone pole, ultimately crashing into the porch and railing fence of a house located at 491 Monmouth St, reports said.

The impact sent a 20-foot piece of the telephone pole 50 feet down the street, hitting a second parked vehicle, a Hyundai. A transformer from the pole also fell through the front windshield of the first parked vehicle, reports said.

Tator was arrested and given a blood test after hypodermic needles, a marijuana pipe and a bag of marijuana were found in his car, reports said. He was treated at Jersey City Medical Center for his injuries, reports said. No other injuries were reported.

According to a PSE&G spokeswoman, one house lost power as a result of the accident. Power was restored to the resident by Monday, she said.

This week we finally got FIOS installed. See my posts earlier in this thread. The install took about 8 hours, and was well worth it! No more pokey DSL :)
Think about the wiring in advance. The ONT is not something you want in your living room. Better to have it placed in a basement or closet if that's an option.

I can't comment on FIOS TV, we just got the HSI.

It seems to be available in most of the Hamilton Park area.

Veteran cop vows new approaches to city's ills

By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Nearly 30 years ago, Jersey City's Phillip G. Webb faced a career crossroads. He was already supporting his first wife and two kids, and there was another baby on the way, and Webb, then a social worker, said he was having trouble keeping a job.

After Richard Nixon was elected president, money for social services dried up, Webb said, adding, "I lost three jobs in one year."

Encouraged by Glenn D. Cunningham, later Jersey City mayor, but then a recruiter for the Jersey City Police Department, Webb passed the police exam.

Now 60, married for a second time and with seven adult children, Webb has been a cop for 29 years - the last 15 as a detective in the West District.

And he's eyeing another career change.

"I see problems that aren't being addressed," Webb said during an interview at his Marion section home, explaining his candidacy for mayor.

"We had 50,000 arrests here in Jersey City the last four years. . And we are not instituting any type of holistic approach to address that. We just come from the punitive point of view."

Webb said his experience as a police officer reinforced beliefs he held as a social worker:

Direction and opportunity helps young men avoid crime, and drug addicts need treatment, not a locked cell.

Even as cop, he said, he helped run a nighttime basketball program, until it became "a political football."

If elected, Webb pledges to establish stress management, sensitivity training and fitness programs for police officers.

He wants to create a volunteer Mayor's Executive Council to represent the city's diverse populations and generate policy.

And he intends to start more recreational programs.

A bear of a man at 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, Webb worked for nine years as the police bodyguard for former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler and played the same role for Assemblyman and former Acting Mayor Harvey Smith, who is also running for mayor in the May 12 election.

Webb and Smith were close.

They grew up in the same Greenville neighborhood.

They played on the same basketball team at Snyder High.

But Webb had harsh words for his former "hangout partner."

"Harvey became a political hound," Webb charged.

"And he broke unity with Glenn Cunningham . and he did it to side with the political machinery."

Smith said Webb's comments are "bogus" since Webb supported him "all the way down the line."

"I don't know where he is going with this, but it is quite disingenuous," Smith added.

Schundler had kinder words for Webb, who is also studying to be a minister.

"He is smart, he is articulate, he loves Jersey City," Schundler said about Webb.

"And I do think he had a lot of opportunities to see the things we were doing during my administration."

#83

Home away from home

Only three more performances of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing!

Thursday, May 7
Friday, May 8 and
Saturday, May 9

From The Jersey City Independent

The subject of Art House Production?s latest multimedia play is universal: the human life cycle, from our birth to our death with all the other births and deaths in between. Heavy Craft/Soft Landing touches on our most important relationships and milestones, mixing spoken word, music, video projection, poetry, mime, movement, and storytelling to complete the cycle of life in just about an hour.

Art House must be commended for not only creating a smart original piece of theater but for their clear understanding of collaboration. An ensemble of performers and musicians work together seamlessly throughout the play, in many cases playing more than one character and telling more than one story. The use of simple props and sparse scenic elements to create a myriad of locations and tones in many cases were quite imaginative and successful.

The ?scarf dance of conformity? ? performed by our adolescent self desperately trying to fit in ? is one of the play?s most striking moments. Without a single spoken word it communicates the human condition with such humor and tenderness that this reviewer was left wishing the entire piece proceeded without words.

The musicians of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing deserve praise for not only providing an original soundtrack for this theatrical experience but for going above and beyond traditional musical expression and creating Foley sound effects to aid in the storytelling. Blowing bubbles in water through a straw, playing a toy trumpet, and even a sneeze become parts of the imaginative soundscape of this piece. Having seven talented musicians performing on multiple instruments in such an intimate space produced a rather powerful experience.

The play also relies quite heavily on technical elements. The video shot for Heavy Craft/Soft Landing was quite beautiful, but its success contrasts with the piece?s lighting and set design, which can be described as makeshift at best. For a company so teeming with imagination, the set design could be much more innovative.

As an experience Heavy Craft/Soft Landing is definitely worth it, not only to support a successful piece of original theater but also to support a company which has its community in its heart. As an added bonus you can get some of the best homemade brownies in the lobby before or after the show.

Three performances of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing remain: Thursday, May 7; Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students and seniors).

That being said, having a "commitment" is one of those great weasel words. Having just "a commitment" doesn't mean much of anything. Coupling demonstrative "action" consistent with the professed commitment gives it real substance. All the rest is fluff.

I am most disappointed to see the two most internet enabled candidates, Councilman Fulop and Mayoral Candidate Levin, largely absent from demonstrating an "active" commitment to support the preservation of the Embankment, especially when it means the most to the EPC and the community. I don't think it's an oversight, but a conscious decision not to mobilize the Facebook and email resources at their disposal...

Geoff, your selective indignation is disappointing. You single out Fulop and Levin since they are "the two most internet enabled candidates" - so lesser internet savvy politicians are off the hook? What about Council President and at-large councilman Mariano Vega? I've heard that he actually uses e-mail and and surfs the internet. Pete Brennan and Willie Flood - the other two at-large don't appear to leverage the internet so are also off your radar. I don't think this is an oversight on your part, but a conscious decision to single out and criticize a particular candidate.

You state that for a candidate to show true commitment to the embankment they should use their available resources to urge their constituents to submit comments to the Surface Transportation Board. I beg to disagree. The Embankment Preservation Coalition and other non-governmental organizations can and should do that on their own. It isn't appropriate or necessary for elected politicians to use their limited resources for this effort.

Fulop is the only person on the council that sponsored proactive legislation to protect the embankment that Hyman spent 250k in court to knock down and is the only person in the administration or council to submit comments to the Surface Transportation Board for a full environmental study in support of the Embankment. If there are others, kudos to them and please mention it in this thread.
Fulop's voting record on the embankment is 100% in support of the embankment and he's consistently supported a park when the administration and council pushed for the lightrail.

Dan Levin has stated his commitment and involvement for preservation of the Embankment. He's attended most of the public meetings.

I think that Guy Catrillo sincerely supports preservation of the embankment, but I'm not sure what that commitment actually is.
