Jersey City Councilman Phil Kenny pleads guilty in massive NJ corruption case
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal October 06, 2009, 12:50PM Jersey City Councilman Philip J. Kenny pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark this afternoon to accepting $,5000 in bribes as part of the massive New Jersey corruption case that broke over the summer. Kenny, who represents the city's West Side, Ward B, hadn't been charged in the original roundup of suspects. In pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, Kenny admitted that in March he met with a government informant posing as a developer wanting to grease the wheels for a fictitious development project on Garfield Avenue. Two meetings were cited -- both in Jersey City restaurants and both attended by Kenny, the informant and an unnamed "Jersey City Official.'' At the first meeting, Kenny agreed to accept $5,000 broken down into two $2,500 contributions from "straw donors'' for his Friends of Phil Kenny war chest in exchange for future official favors in getting zoning and other approvals. At the second meeting, he accepted the money, knowing it was illegal to do so. Kenny is out on $55,000 bail until his Jan. 12 sentencing when he faces 12 to 24 months in prison. Kenny has been in office only since the spring. He was appointed to the Ward B seat on April 6 after Councilwoman Mary Spinello resigned, just weeks before the May 12 election. She had left to head the Jersey City Parking Authority, and the council voted to replace her for the short stretch in what some deemed an inappropriate attempt to give Kenny the "incumbent'' advantage come Election Day. Kenny ran on Mayor Jerramiah Healy's ticket and was elected on the first ballot. Before Kenny's appointment, Council President and fellow Healy running mate Mariano Vega sang his praises. "He's been a strong activist for a long time,'' Vega, who has since been charged in the corruption sting, said. "It's an appointment of someone I think people can trust.'' In addition to his council post, Kenny is the office manager for Hudson County Board of Freeholders and has been a state Democratic committeeman; West Side ward leader for Obama presidential campaign; trustee of the Lincoln Park Little League, and an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City. He is the sixth person -- all from Jersey City -- to plead guilty in the sweep that netted 44 men and women from New Jersey and New York on a variety of charges that ranged from political corruption to the sale of body parts. On Sept. 24, unsuccessful Ward C candidate James "Jimmy" King pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from a government informant posing as a developer. Before that, former Jersey City Housing Authority commissioner Edward Cheatham, former Hudson County Superintendent of Elections investigator Denis Jaslow, and former Jersey City municipal employees Maher Khalil and Guy Catrillo also pleaded guilty to their roles in the scandal.

Update: Car crashes into electric pole causing blackout
by Paul Takahashi/ Jersey Journal Monday July 06, 2009, 4:41 PM Lindenhurst, NY, man, who allegedly told police he was using cocaine for two days, was arrested on drug and DUI charges after he crashed into a parked car, a telephone pole and then the front of a house in Jersey City Sunday night, reports said. The accident happened at 11:31 p.m. on July 5, at the intersection of Monmouth Street and Eighth Street. Douglas Tator, 28, was driving a Ford Escape when he jumped the curb, hit a parked Toyota Prius and split a telephone pole, ultimately crashing into the porch and railing fence of a house located at 491 Monmouth St, reports said. The impact sent a 20-foot piece of the telephone pole 50 feet down the street, hitting a second parked vehicle, a Hyundai. A transformer from the pole also fell through the front windshield of the first parked vehicle, reports said. Tator was arrested and given a blood test after hypodermic needles, a marijuana pipe and a bag of marijuana were found in his car, reports said. He was treated at Jersey City Medical Center for his injuries, reports said. No other injuries were reported. According to a PSE&G spokeswoman, one house lost power as a result of the accident. Power was restored to the resident by Monday, she said. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _crashes_into_electr.html

This week we finally got FIOS installed. See my posts earlier in this thread. The install took about 8 hours, and was well worth it! No more pokey DSL :)
Think about the wiring in advance. The ONT is not something you want in your living room. Better to have it placed in a basement or closet if that's an option. I can't comment on FIOS TV, we just got the HSI. It seems to be available in most of the Hamilton Park area. Check availability at verizon.net/fios

Only three more performances of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing!
Thursday, May 7 Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 From The Jersey City Independent The subject of Art House Production?s latest multimedia play is universal: the human life cycle, from our birth to our death with all the other births and deaths in between. Heavy Craft/Soft Landing touches on our most important relationships and milestones, mixing spoken word, music, video projection, poetry, mime, movement, and storytelling to complete the cycle of life in just about an hour. Art House must be commended for not only creating a smart original piece of theater but for their clear understanding of collaboration. An ensemble of performers and musicians work together seamlessly throughout the play, in many cases playing more than one character and telling more than one story. The use of simple props and sparse scenic elements to create a myriad of locations and tones in many cases were quite imaginative and successful. The ?scarf dance of conformity? ? performed by our adolescent self desperately trying to fit in ? is one of the play?s most striking moments. Without a single spoken word it communicates the human condition with such humor and tenderness that this reviewer was left wishing the entire piece proceeded without words. The musicians of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing deserve praise for not only providing an original soundtrack for this theatrical experience but for going above and beyond traditional musical expression and creating Foley sound effects to aid in the storytelling. Blowing bubbles in water through a straw, playing a toy trumpet, and even a sneeze become parts of the imaginative soundscape of this piece. Having seven talented musicians performing on multiple instruments in such an intimate space produced a rather powerful experience. The play also relies quite heavily on technical elements. The video shot for Heavy Craft/Soft Landing was quite beautiful, but its success contrasts with the piece?s lighting and set design, which can be described as makeshift at best. For a company so teeming with imagination, the set design could be much more innovative. As an experience Heavy Craft/Soft Landing is definitely worth it, not only to support a successful piece of original theater but also to support a company which has its community in its heart. As an added bonus you can get some of the best homemade brownies in the lobby before or after the show. Three performances of Heavy Craft/Soft Landing remain: Thursday, May 7; Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students and seniors).

I didn't appreciate getting those e-mails, seemed a bit random, but I think Fulop's intention was to encourage his constituents to vote, since the turnout for that election is so pathetic. Also, how can you endorse four+ candidates for only three elected positions?

Geoff, your selective indignation is disappointing. You single out Fulop and Levin since they are "the two most internet enabled candidates" - so lesser internet savvy politicians are off the hook? What about Council President and at-large councilman Mariano Vega? I've heard that he actually uses e-mail and and surfs the internet. Pete Brennan and Willie Flood - the other two at-large don't appear to leverage the internet so are also off your radar. I don't think this is an oversight on your part, but a conscious decision to single out and criticize a particular candidate. You state that for a candidate to show true commitment to the embankment they should use their available resources to urge their constituents to submit comments to the Surface Transportation Board. I beg to disagree. The Embankment Preservation Coalition and other non-governmental organizations can and should do that on their own. It isn't appropriate or necessary for elected politicians to use their limited resources for this effort. Fulop is the only person on the council that sponsored proactive legislation to protect the embankment that Hyman spent 250k in court to knock down and is the only person in the administration or council to submit comments to the Surface Transportation Board for a full environmental study in support of the Embankment. If there are others, kudos to them and please mention it in this thread. Fulop's voting record on the embankment is 100% in support of the embankment and he's consistently supported a park when the administration and council pushed for the lightrail. Dan Levin has stated his commitment and involvement for preservation of the Embankment. He's attended most of the public meetings. I think that Guy Catrillo sincerely supports preservation of the embankment, but I'm not sure what that commitment actually is.

Our group is on one of the top floors and needless to say we probably had some of the best views of this incident. We were conducting work as normal when all of a sudden we see this huge commerical plane coming at us. People were ducking and on the floor because it came so close. The plane flew right over us and couldn't have missed the building by more than 100 feet. Then we heard people scream it was coming back. The plane literally looked like it was going to barrel into our building coming straight at us until it turned upwards at the last minute. I can't believe I saw the underbelly of a plane fly over me. When it started coming back a 3rd time, we ran for the stairs. It's safe to say we are pretty angry about having to evacuate and go down 30+ flights of stairs for a 'photo shoot.'
