Yes, for those of us who are not blinded by the passionate cries of a vocal minority and by those who understand the fundamental needs of a growing city.

I guess the A.U.P (Armchair Urban Planners) don't have much of a lobby.

Yeah, especially at night when the street lights are out and there's nothing but a ten foot wall between you and the sketchy looking guy following you. The embankment is nothing more than a crumbling pile of stones, an eyesore that has blighted the neighborhood since its erection. The greatest travesty is that the embankment land will not be put to a public use as a park or as part of a transportation system.

I doubt if Historic Preservation will see it that way. Then again, it will probably go the same way as Home Depot and the Planning Board. The board will say no, the developer will sue and maybe win. All that really matters is the city's lawsuit to prove Conrail was wrong in not offering to the city first.

Actually, all that really matters is whether the city will have the money to buy it, if the ruling goes its way.

Not "were"..."are". And will always be.

I don't agree with the councilman on much, but he was absolutely right endorsing Manzo. Lou is crazy, but Sandy is unqualified and dangerous. She'll breeze into the state senate, contribute nothing, and use that office to run for Mayor. Her goals are simple - gain power and punish those "responsible" for Glenn's death. How you punish 50 years of cheeseburgers is beyond me, so she'll set her sights on other targets, like her running mate, Harvey Smith, her "godfathers" Healy and Degise, and anyone her handlers don't like or they need to remove to make room for cronies. The getnj message board is filled with posts about Bobby Jackson's son. Imagine that x 10.

Another Cunningham in City Hall would be an incredible disaster for Jersey City. You think our "pay to play" situation sucks now...you ain't seen nothing yet.

Here's what Glenn Cunningham did. He accepted organizational, political, and monetary support from Bob Menendez in order to get elected Mayor. Then, at the urging of his handlers (Bobby Jackson, Joe Cardwell, Eugene Drayton, and Sandy), he embarked on a naked power grab for all of Hudson County, even stooping to call Menendez a "terrorist" after 9/11. His administration was perhaps the worst in Jersey City history.

Before nominating DeFazio for sainthood and condeming the council to hell - here's another perspective:

http://cms.firehouse.com/web/online/N ... -Time-Questioned/46$54819

According to this, DeFazio gave limited immunity to 8 cops, and based on evidence provided, the US Attorney's office declined to act.

So what would a council committee hope to discover or accomplish?

Don't be so naive.

If Fulop expects to run for Mayor or even for Council At-large (the usual stepping stone to Mayor), he's going to need a machine of his own. And yes, he's going to have to make some deals with some scumbag politicians and political players to build that machine. And he's going to owe those people if he wins.

Look at Sharpe's former slate-mates who ran with Booker.

Idealism gets you into heaven, but not into the Mayor's chair.

That's just politics. You can't blame politicians (scorpions) for being politicians (scorpions). Even a "good" or "reform" administration would do the same to improve its chances (although I have to say I'm disappointed in Cory Booker...scorpion).

The real problem is an uneducated, unmotivated electorate that doesn't (or simply can't) take time to understand the issues, or votes the same old way out of "tradition" or habit or some other narrow self-interest.

You can't fight demographics, but sometimes you can outlast them.

Cunningham will be exposed for the weak link she is as she's handled by her "advisors". But if she becomes an embarassment or a threat to the machine, she'll be jettisoned next time around.

I imagine tomorrow starts the "Manzo for Mayor 2009" campaign.

Gerry fcuked his business partners. Sandy's associate fcuked a 13 y.o. girl. I'd say the scumbaggery on both sides balances out.

So, let's talk about qualifications. Manzo's an assemblyman with actual experience and achievements. Sandy's a politician's widow being handled by experts who need to pander to black voters.

Manzo's a nut - no doubt about it, but is Sandy's refusal to debate him because "she can't stand to be in the same room with him" any less nutty? Besides, two men she banned from Glenn's funeral and all but accused of killing him - Tom DeGise and Harvey Smith are now her running mates. She kind of loses the "plays well with others" match up. And, bottom line, that's what legislative bodies are all about - working together, compromising, moving mutually acceptable agenda forward. Her "I don't wanna, I don't hafta" hissy fits show her to be unsuitable for the state senate.

On the other hand, once she's installed as a loyal democrat senator, and once the dual office ban goes into effect, she won't be able to run for Mayor....

uh, Vote Sandy!!!!

Aside from the felons, ex-felons, and soon-to-be-felons, this is already a crazy campaign.

Sandy Cunningham, who all but blamed the HCDO for her husband's death and banned Tom DeGise and Harvey Smith from his funeral, is now their poster girl.

Even stranger, Roger Jones, her spokesperson, was the guy who ran the "kindler, gentler Gerry McCann" campaign that got him elected Mayor in 1989.

Even Bob Janiszewski [sp] must be laughing at this one.

Politics is a dirty business, but it ain't just Jersey City:

John McCain's illegitimite black daughter

Swift boating

Barack Obama went to a radical muslim school

Cory Booker is gay, white, and Jewish

The "powers of control" are the voters - if more of us had turned out, McCann's tactics would be viewed as pathetic.

Instead, campaigns all over the country are probably analyzing it for effectiveness going into November.

Good.

Regardless of whatever perceived miss steps the councilman has or will make, alienating himself from this council is not one of them.

This council and administration will likely go down as one of the most inept in Jersey City's storied history.

And, for Jersey City, that is saying a lot.

This current group exemplifies all that is wrong with municipal government and is a model for discouraging citizen participation. With the exception of Steve (and Viola), the lot of them are disgraceful.

-M

There have been worse councils and councilpeople. Consider those who gave away the most valuable remaining real estate on the east coast to build truly ugly housing and a 2nd rate mall.

The problem with alienating his peers is that his ward may pay the price. He wasn't elected to carry on his own personal crusade for justice and righteousness, but to represent his ward and get our share of city services. While he may enjoy his "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" loner status, being part of a legislative body involves working with others. If he can't do that, his performance suffers.

Finally, say what you will about our elected representatives, but they were elected by majorities in each ward and citywide. The problem is not what's wrong with municipal government, but what's wrong with citizen participation that this is the best we get. Downtown elected Fulop, if the other wards can't or won't follow suit, you're fighting demographics.

So now what?

Clearly a misstep by the councilman. But can he backtrack based on the outrage expressed here or will that make him look like the dreaded "flipflopper"?

One thing he can't go back on is the complete and total alienation from his colleagues on the council. Can any amount of explaining make this seem like it wasn't aimed at Willie Flood? Say what you like about your fellow politicians, but I thought families were off limits. Callous at best, but his effectiveness as a legislator has to take a hit. Oh, he'll still be a responsive councilman, returning calls, getting trash cans in the park and benches in the dog runs, but it's doubtful that any of his large scale initiatives will gain any traction over the next 2 years. And his fault or not, that's a tough record to run on.

So, of course it will be defeated at the council meeting, no need to turn up with signs for or against. I think even Richardson will have a hard time supporting this one, and she was a cop. And unlike the pay to play ordinance, this won't get played up and become a rallying cry for reform. Wait, did that happen yet? I mean, besides here?

Jersey City politics, always fun to watch.

I don't understand the emphasis on their not calling the JJ. Hell, I wouldn't give that rag the chance to misquote me. Besides, they already changed their design once to try and satisfy their neighbors - they don't owe anybody an explanation.

Sure, the system is broken but these guys didn't break it. It would be different if they tried to do the work unpermitted in the dead of night.

I'm more troubled by this quote:
