Where I disagree with you is the "greatest city within minutes" thing. Sure - the PATH takes only seven minutes to go from Grove to WTC. But no one lives in the PATH station and the WTC is usually not your destination. When I go into the city on the weekends and need to be somewhere by a given time, I always need to allow at least 45 minutes unless it's in the village or Tribeca and I am only five (short) blocks from Grove St PATH; an hour if it's in or around the upper east side. .

You can say this about, literally, anywhere someone lives in the NYC area. If you live in the village and want to go to a bar in Park Slope, you also "don't live in the subway station" and may need to walk a bit and take a couple of trains to get there. And vice versa.

There's lots you can get on Downtown JC about. Proximity to NYC isn't one of them.

Hard to argue with this. Agree that Jersey City's lack of greenspace to escape the concrete jungle is woeful. It doesn't help matters when the center of Downtown is stuck with several sprawling parking lots around the Gregory Towers that could be better used as a park (eminent domain, please?). The waterfront, one of the city's greatest assets, is also a sterile, boring waste.

On the plus side, the two new music venues-- White Eagle and the FMU space-- are huge additions to the city which I expect to be awesome and successful.

76 unit apartment building with ground-floor retail.

Thanks. Website says 11k square feet of retail space. Wiki of Trader Joe's says their average store size is 9,000-12,000 square feet. Hmmm....

Re: How would you have planned JC's waterfront?

All you need to learn about Jersey City's waterfront (from just north of the Colgate clock to Newport) you can learn by going there on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, then taking a walk to Sinatra Park in Hoboken. Whereas Hoboken's waterfront is bustling with people taking advantage of ample green space, a tree-lined separated bike lane, restaurants and beautiful parks, JC's waterfront is a sterile, corporate ghost town with maybe a few tourists taking pictures of the skyline.

The JC waterfront is one of the casualties of the giveaways to the financial businesses and high rises in the area. They give the area the feel of Wall Street, which is fine for going to work, but the last place on earth you want to spend your free time. The entire area lacks retail space, green space or any other amenities. It has tremendous untapped potential.

Grundy Pier, which should be a centerpiece of cultural events in the area, is a particularly under-utilized asset.

Not sure what can be done to remedy that area, but the renovated Colgate park (which looks beautiful) is a nice start.

Was able to peak into the window (though they are still mostly papered over) and it did, in fact appear that there were workers inside either replacing or repairing the floors. I saw the woman who I think is one of the owners inside, as well.

Seems encouraging. Looks like the reports of temporarily closing for renovations may be accurate. Hope that this is the case.

Well, it appears that the rumors/ speculation that the chromium removal project between the Gregory Towers would result in retail space being added on the Christopher Columbus Drive side of the lot were just that-- rumors and speculation.

Unfortunately, the project appears completed and the *entirety* of the lot, right up to the cast iron fence along Columbus, has been outfitted with freshly-painted parking spaces.

So, the monstrous catastrophe of city planning that is that sprawling parking lot appears to be here for good. What an utter waste.

I'm sure the investors in that new high-rise above the PATH station are thrilled that they will be asking tenants to pay through the nose for apartments with little-to-no retail directly near them and beautiful views of a sprawling parking lot.

Walked by TVM on Tuesday and the windows were still papered over and it was still closed. Anyone hear anything new?

Not to get too nitpicky, but this isn't a "robbery." It's a burglary, or more generally a theft. I understand journalists are not lawyers, but they should be able to get general criminal terminology correct.

What about the empty lot near Van Vorst St. and Sussex St.? Behind St. Peter's Prep's football field. They knocked down an old warehouse there and completely flattened out the lot at least a year or two ago. Since then, nothing.

Seriously. Not to mention that the one time I've been to Left Bank, my burger was fantastic. Not the best in the city, but excellent.

This board is a perfect encapsulation of the worst stereotypes of people from Jersey City (e.g.- we're all complete assholes). Rather than think: "Hey, that's not my personal favorite burger in the state, but glad to see a local business get some ink," it's always preferable on JCList to spend 3-4 posts pissing on the local business for having the audacity of not appealing to ones completely subjective tastes.

Well, I agree that the Powerhouse looks like a complete dump. However, I'd get used to looking at it, since it's not coming down any time soon. Look on the bright side, it's still the nicest building in Newport.

Conformist, you make some sound points regarding the financial feasibility of a Powerhouse renovation. However, I don't believe, from a structural standpoint, anyone here is in a position to declare the Powerhouse unsalvageable. That determination could only be made by architects and engineers who have done an on-site evaluation.

So far, a significant amount of money has been invested in shoring up the structure and removing the smokestacks (which were actually deemed unsalvageable by professionals). I can't imagine these investment would have been made if, at the time, the structure was hopeless. I understand that several years have passed and the building has deteriorated, but, as a layman, I'm not ready to accept the assumption that it's beyond repair. I just don't think such pessimism is warranted.

I hold out hope that with a little political will and creativity, coupled with the large amount of money pouring into DTJC, the Powerhouse can be saved. The last thing anyone wants is another shiny, glass-and-steel high rise in that area.

BTW, I believe City Hall's official line is that it's the Port Authority which is holding the renovation up by dragging its feet on relocating the power station located behind the Powerhouse.

Re: Pedestrian Cross Signals in JC

The synching of lights can get complicated and each intersection represents it's own issues. However, one thing is clear: there should be no walk signs that only change if the button is pushed. The walk-signs need uniformity in this regard. People shouldn't be left confused over whether or not their turn to walk simply hasn't arrived yet or whether the walk sign hasn't changed because they failed to press the button.

The buttons could still serve a purpose under such a scenario. When pressed, they could reduce the time of the green light going in the opposite direction, since the light would then "know" that a pedestrian is waiting to cross.

Agree with the OP. This is not a case of walk signal being temporarily delayed to allow cars to turn, it is a case of the walk signal never coming on. I've concluded that that at these lights in question, the walk signal will never come on unless someone pushes the button. This is senseless, except during off-hours (such as overnight).

Re: Fulop to solicit proposals from for-profit companies to replace FOL in running the Loew’s theater

I've been pretty on-the-fence about the issue of who should control the Loew's Theater as it takes its next step forward. I have to say, however, I have found the Friends of Loew's recent information campaign to be extremely persuasive.

Simply put, I think Mayor Fulop is not doing right by the people who have saved and preserved this landmark with practically no help from City Hall. I have no ties to or affiliation with FOL, but even as a third-party, I find Mayor Fulop's intimation that the FOL have sat on their hands to be inaccurate and, frankly, pretty lame.

Seems to me that the reason the Loew's hasn't taken the giant leaps forward that the Mayor seems to think they should have is because City Hall hasn't stayed true to their promise to fund the improvements.

The decision will be this: are arts an important enough priority to Jersey City that we want to actually invest in it? Or should the city completely skimp on important cultural investments and simply hand the reins over to some corporation only interested in turning a profit?

The impending reality that we might see a "LiveNation Loew's" in Journal Square makes me a bit nauseous. It will go down as a huge mistake. Fulop is being too stubborn to see that.

Best Taxi Service within Jersey City

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good taxi service that can be ordered by phone for trips within Jersey City?

Most importantly, I'm looking for a service that is reliable and will arrive relatively quickly without having a prior appointment. (Essentially, I'm looking for a car service which could get someone to a vet quickly if a small pet has a medical emergency).

Thanks in advance.

No; before the chromium was discovered in soil testing, the plan was to build new towers along Columbus, Warren and Montgomery. Given the strength of the real estate market, I think that construction is likely to proceed once clean-up is complete. In any case, I don't see much value to putting a one-block street in there; it would still be blocked at the northern and southern ends.

I may be mis-remembering because I saw the plans so long ago (Tommy had them at Brightside), but I thought the plan was to open it up for pedestrians and have retail along the main streets and little pedestrian plaza with retail between Columbus and Montgomery.

My understanding was that the retail was to line the whole length of Columbus, without any break. The development map floating around certainly makes it look that way. But plans may not have been solidly set at any time.

Frankly, this seems like a terrible idea and an extremely poor use of key downtown space. I was aware of the former Gregory Ave. and also thought it would be unlikely that a new public street would be commissioned. However, I, at the very least, expect the area to be opened up to pedestrian traffic.

As it stands, the Montgomery Towers, with their sprawling parking lots act as a colossal, two-square-block barrier between Paulus Hook and the Grove Street area. I think the area could be re-developed in a far more pedestrian-friendly way than simply lining the Columbus St. side with storefronts.

As I've said before, if that is indeed the plan, it is a city planning nightmare and the city council should get involved.

In light of what we now know about the closing of the George Washington Bridge, including the open disdain Port Authority officials have expressed toward our mayor, the agency has lost the benefit of the doubt with the people of NJ.

Unfortunately, in yet another sign of its seeming omnipotence, the Authority, as a bi-state agency, is subject to NEITHER NJ's or NY's open public records laws. It is only subject to its own laughable public record policy drawn up by its board. This agency is literally something right out of the Kremlin or some banana republic. They are allowed to operate in near complete secrecy.

A Downtown Jersey City neighborhood group has organized a public meeting for Tuesday night for residents to ask questions and air their concerns over the weekend closing of PATH service between the Exchange Place station in Jersey City the the World Trade Center station in Manhattan.

Representatives of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the bi-state agency that operates PATH, will attend the meeting arranged by the Historic Paulus Hook Association (HPHA) and hosted by the Van Vorst Park Association.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne St.

Port Authority announced last week that service between the two stations would be suspended every weekend for the rest of the year and possibly into 2015 so the agency can install a federally mandated anti-collision system.

The last departure on Fridays at the World Trade Center-Newark line is 11:55 p.m. at the World Trade Center, arriving in Newark at 12:17 a.m. The last departure in the other direction leaves Newark at 11:20 p.m. on Fridays and arrives at the World Trade Center at 11:42 p.m.

Service resumes on Mondays, with the first departure out of the World Trade Center scheduled for 5:10 a.m.

PATH representatives Jenn Onofrio, coordinator of marketing and customer service programs, and Juan Carlos Rojas, external client representative, government and community relations, will be at the meeting to hear the public's questions and concerns about the service shutdown.

The HPHA board of directors said it wants Port Authority to establish alternate channels of transportation to mitigate the shutdown, including:

-- Arranging for discounted weekend ferry service between Paulus Hook and World Financial Center;
-- Provide shuttles between Christopher Street and World Trade Center.
-- Eliminate the Hoboken stop from weekend PATH service between Newark and 33rd Street, and establish separate, direct weekend PATH service between Hoboken and 33rd Street.

Color me skeptical over the fact that Casinos are any type of tourist draw. With the exception of Las Vegas (which, I'll note was disproportionately devastated by the recession), what city in the US has experienced a tourist boom by building a casino? There's a casino in Philadelphia and I'm pretty sure people in that major city aren't climbing over each other to get there. And I've recently been to Atlantic City on a weekend and it was utterly and completely depressing. You could have safely had archery practice on the boardwalk without fear of hitting a person. It was a ghost town on a Saturday night.

Casinos seem to provide a nice sugar high for a few months while they're a novelty, but quickly become depressing monstrosities which serve as little more than a vampire to poorer communities.
