Re: Parking a rental car on the street without a permit?

Get a temporary parking permit. Not worth the grief over the holiday season and trust me, you'll get ticketed. It sucks to get one in person and the last time I did it - they don't take cash. Over this season when the regular union workers are on vacation you're going to get eager beaver part timers picking up the ticketing pace.

Don't mean a toy drive (although great idea). More like supporting a family, food donations, etc. Suggestions?

Why should parking be such an important expectation? No one is forced to move here, no one is forced to stay. Plenty of people have left because of the schools, the desire for a less crowded/more affordable living space, etc. How many have left because they can't find free parking for their cars?

I thought "abated" means I'll be paying reduced property for 5 years, and I had assumed that it meant the same amount for 5 years.

Perhaps I was wrong?

Any insight would be appreciated.
I had an abated property and my taxes didn't increase 20% each year. If there was a tax increase it went up the % of that tax increase.

I can't imagine that the Port Authority would enact a change that actually benefits their passengers. Something like that would go against all of their operating tenets. So is this just a fluke and we'll be back to the normal packed trains once WTC is open on weekends again?

I know it's been AMAZING! So sad to see this disappear after this weekend. :(

I agree with this. The waitstaff wasn't very refined (I don't mean high end refined, I just mean the etiquette normally associated with someone serving you). It seemed brash and club-like (a place you could bring your rowdy co-workers for happy hour). The staff was sloppy with service, didn't pour the wine properly, neglected the table for long periods of time, then would over do coming to the table - it felt like they weren't trained, but they also all congregated at the end of the bar and talked amongst themselves as thought they were entertaining each other. I didn't go back. But if I ever had rowdy coworkers, loud clients or friends with children, I'd probably go there as I don't think anyone cares.

I was very surprised it was in the Top 10, it made me not trust the other reviews because my experience was nothing special. I wish they'd improve, it would be nice to have another place in that area.

Who are these idiot city workers with zero judgment on the logical place to put the stop sign? Meaning - do your job and place it at the intersection but then DO YOUR JOB by realizing where it needs to be in order to be seen. (Like the poster below saying it wasn't properly visible to start with). It reminds me of the idiot city workers who didn't give a rats ass about paining white lines on the streets and painted the white line over a pile of leaves because they were too lazy to move the leaves. Judgement goes far.

I received no renewal, no registration, nothing in the mail. Are you saying you have to pick up the registration now? Isn't that going completely backwards? I'm so confused. I moved last fall and my vehicle registration expired this April. So even the excuse they may have mailed it to the wrong address (when I had address forwarding for 8 months) it should have happened considering I went to the DMV and changed my address in February. Lucky for me, I have garage parking and wasn't using my vehicle for much so would never be parked where I would have got a ticket - but I'm so used to receiving renewal in the mail, doing all the work online, paying online and receiving the renewal in the mail - it came as a huge surprise to notice my registration had expired.

The same thing happened to me. I'm vigilant on these things. Went to get my annual vehicle inspection, went in to the car and realized my registration was expired. I just assumed I hadn't put the new one in the car, checked my files and learned I had in fact never received a renewal notice. I phoned and they said that although I diligently changed my address in time they sent it to my old address and they don't, and I quote, "do return mail" and there is no way to rectify except in person. I now can't drive my vehicle until I make it to the DMV. Ironically I was there doing my address change and would have happily got my registration at the same time....odd. Can't do any of it by mail, or online.

Used PATH train Saturday to and from Christopher Street and it was frequent, not painfully slow as usual on the weekend (thanks to the WTC closures it actually was excellent service from JSQ to 33rd). It wasn't overcrowded. I wish it worked this well every weekend - even the stop in Hoboken wasn't painful because we weren't squished like sardines.

Exactly. I hate "foodies" anyway. Gives me douche-chills.

"Hate" is harsh Vigilante, C'mon man. Foodies aren't douches. Just people who love to patronize local businesses that offer up good eats. Where's this coming from?

"Foodie" has to be one of the most pretentious words ever. The people who describe themselves as such are insufferable.

I'd say insecure Trolls are equally so. I appreciate those who give patronage to local restaurants and in doing so may consider themselves foodies. Bravo. Keep bringing money in to local establishments. If you are insecure and "pretentious" is the first word that comes to mind, you need to resolve some issues for yourself. But do it at a local restaurant over some great food. Cheers.

I live near Jersey Avenue. When I step out of my home to cross Jersey Ave. and Erie to purchase cream for our morning coffee? We joke that I'm taking my life in to my own hands. It's only two streets, one with a crosswalk, and yet, the vehicles driving to work with zero interest in yielding to a pedestrian? I wait, and wait and wait, I step out to be seen, I wait...it's unbelievable the amount of almost hits I've endured over six years. I've been skimmed by cars (where I've been able to touch their windshield as they speed by ignoring me on the crosswalk), I've jumped out of the way - to think all I have to do is cross two intersections to purchase an item at a bodega and I'll think twice about doing it because of safety concerns...I don't need to jaywalk as there are crosswalks everywhere...but no vehicle ever, ever, ever, EVER stops at one to let me cross.

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
on August 28, 2013 at 9:22 PM, updated August 28, 2013 at 9:31 PM

A sweeping overhaul of Jersey City?s municipal government, a top priority of Mayor Steve Fulop, went down in flames tonight after three Fulop allies on the City Council jumped ship and voted against the measure.

The vote came after a 30-minute public hearing that found members of the audience booing any council members who voiced approval of the ordinance, which would have combined the police and fire departments, expanded the constituent-service division and paved the way for a merger of the public-works department and the autonomous Jersey City Incinerator Authority.

Tonight?s action is the first time any of Fulop?s council allies have stood in the way of one of his objectives since the mayor took office almost two months ago. It also seemed to stun top city officials in the Fulop administration, who spent 10 minutes following the vote trying to figure out how to proceed.

The measure failed 4-5, with council members Rich Boggiano, Khemraj ?Chico? Ramchal, Daniel Rivera, Joyce Watterman and Michael Yun voting against. Ramchal, Rivera and Watterman ran on Fulop?s ticket in May?s municipal election.

Fulop could not immediately be reached to comment.

Boggiano called the measure was too expansive. Ramchal said he believes the proposed changes to the DPW would lead to unnecessary job losses at the JCIA. Rivera said he has questions about the measure, but declined to specify what his questions are.

Council members Diane Coleman, Frank Gajewski, Rolando Lavarro and Candice Osborne voted in favor. Coleman, who represents Ward F, said she thinks the measure would have made managing city government ?easier and better.?

Full story at the Jersey Journal.

Something stinks here, not just the terrible writing. Who writes a new article that's not an Op-Ed piece with "down in flames" and "jump ship"? Someone didn't go to journalism school...

In the past there has been an entire system of corruption and pay off's in that department. Remember the FBI takedown? I know first hand they have the balls to expect they don't need to do their job until money passes hands. I'm guessing they prioritize based on their fat envelopes and favors.

Even after one of the FBI takedowns they were still lining their pockets! All here say of course, wink, wink. I think delays are way of building frustration so you'll realize that there "must be another way" and you give in to the passing of $$. I have a fantasy if I win a billion dollars I'd be willing to hire someone and make their full time job investigating and suing the Permit offices/Buildings Department and exposing them to every media outlet, I'd have a PR person whose only job would be to send out news releases on their corruption and dysfunction. But then again, the talons run far and deep in New Jersey, I'd need several billion....Ah neurotic fantasies!
