Old Timer status is not just living in JC for any length of time. You have certain criteria which helps you qualify for Old Timer Status.
Living in an old house with a leaky roof and sewers backing up every time it rains +2.
Having a dive bar on your block +2.
Having the patrons of the dive bar trying to break into your house or car at 3 AM +5.
Paying RE taxes on a 1988 assessment on your house while everyone else is paying taxes on a current assessment +5.
Whining about how everyone, but not you, should pay more in taxes to fix the sewers on your block and cover the budget gap +8.

There are more but I haven't thought of them yet.

LOL!!

I stand corrected. I just think they're a better condo and I let that influence my opinion.

We have several houses associated with the Crypts and Bloods in the Heights and marijuana is the drug of choice. The police have been very pro-active and it is showing.

That's right. We have equal opportunity drug dealing and related crimes throughout the City, not just in Yvonne's neighborhood of choice.

I hope they didn't use the same numuts who did the crappy cement work on the lower plaza.

Where were the Journal Square Special Improvement District people when this was going on? Oh, that's right, they're out emptying the one garbage can in the plaza.

Ocean Avenue, near Salem-Lafayette to Bayonne border, has a serious problem. Sadly, I have seen dealers use children on bikes in the drug trade. But it is not only related to that area, there has always been a drug trafficking problem on Wayne St. Years ago, I video a meeting at a church near the Hub with concern citizens, Comey and Councilwoman Richardson. The meeting was about the serious trouble with dugs that have made life unbearable for the citizens.

You've seen dealers use children on bikes in the drug trade? How do you know these children on bikes were running drugs, were you undercover for the police?

Only a couple of blocks of Ocean are technically in Bergen Lafayette and it's an affluent part. The rest of Ocean Ave is in Greeneville.

Drugs are no good but you act like there's no one dealing or using any place in the City except in the majority black neighborhoods. You can't make blanket statements like that and not sound racist.

The Heights has drugs, Downtown has drugs, even the Brunswick Towers has drugs. They're not predominately black areas. Drugs are everywhere.

Apparently, the late Glenn Cunningham had the police in that area but when he died, Comey decided to change the routine. The problem went from bad to worse.

Excuse me? Bergen Lafayette has been taken over by drug dealers? Where've you been the last twenty years? Bergen Lafayette is no different from other Wards in the City: no worse than any other Ward and it's no where near as bad as it used to be. The Heights has had A LOT of drug dealing and shootings and killings to boot. Journal Square, Greeneville, Downtown all have had drug dealings and shootings. Welcome to life in the United States. You come across as a racist when you single out Bergen Lafayette. When was the last time you were even in Bergen Lafayette?

Yvonne,
I don't think you've visited too many neighborhoods in Philly. I've never felt scared in Pizza City (Jersey City for those of you who haven't hear our new name, compliments of Seagull) but I sure have felt scared in Philly.
Tourists don't expect to bring cars to a city that they're visiting, they only bring cars when there's not enough good public transportation. Jersey City has good public transportation.
Why don't you chillax and enjoy a slice of pizza.

You should talk to your landlord about securing your apartment. It's probably on him/her to address this and they'll want to do everything they can to avoid liability in the future.

Re: Do you recommend particular Roofer?

You can call the manufacturer of the roofing material you want installed for a list of certified roofers in your area. The manufacturers train and certify roofers to install their products and as such they'll warrant the workmanship even if the roofer goes out of business. The cost of the roofing material remains the same no matter who you use, as that's set by the manufacturer. It's the labor cost that causes the swing in estimates.
No matter who you pick, make sure they show you a certificate of insurance that names you, the homeowner, as the insured. They should also provide you with proof of workman's comp insurance for their workers. If one of the workers falls off your roof and breaks their neck. you're sh#* out of luck because homeowners insurance doesn't cover workers hurt on your premises. If they can't provide the proofs of insurance, they shouldn't be on your roof.

It amazed me when the owner of that neglected building complained to Healy he wasn't making any money that Healy gave him a tax abatement and rented space from him. I honestly don't know how Healy graduated college let alone law school.

Well no wonder I was told I'd like Hoboken better. Walkscore.com has only one of Jersey City's zip codes, 07305, not the most walkable neighborhood. If it had 07306 or 02, the walkability score would shoot up.

Of course it matters. You know it matters. And I'm sure you also know our new Mayor and elected council are very knowledgeable, and will, when it's time for them to step up and assume their positions, use their knowledge to the best of their ability. You're right when you know what you know and I'm sure you will find that it won't be necessary for you to worry too much about them and you'll find yourself saying positive things about them.

Not sure if this was directed toward me, but no, we weren't renovating. The circumstances are a little hazy but the former president of our condo association (who sold his condo a few years ago) had the buildings dept come in to assess something or another.

Edit: I think they asked the bldg's dept to come in for a roof issue.

They saw we had sprinkler heads but no working pump (had nothing to do with why they were originally asked to come in). This opened up a can of worms BUT it was only a matter of time before the buildings dept came knocking on our door since several other small buildings like ours in my neighborhood were forced to upgrade their sprinkler systems.

I'm hoping the reval won't hurt too much.

Does anyone know where I can check my tax records on line?

I was. It sounds like your sprinkler might have been an open issue never completed. Better to be safe but $8K is a lot of money. You can look up your taxes on Jersey City's website.

I think it's hypocritical for a Board Member of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy to post on here slamming Councilwoman Lopez all the while taking money that she helped raise for the Stuyvesant statue to be returned.

Since the City of Jersey City doesn't own the PATH station or the plaza around it, it has no jurisdiction over it. There is a Journal Square SID that is supposed to be responsible for any issues at the PATH station and Councilwoman Lopez worked with them to get the fountain filled with greenery after the drought and cost of upkeep caused the water to be turned off. Again, the PATH station doesn't fall under any Jersey City Councilperson's jurisdiction and yet Councilwoman Lopez and made it a point of working to bring us improvements. Anyone who has issues with the PATH station or the plaza or the fountain should not be trying to make Nidia Lopez responsible for them.
It's not Nidia Lopez' fault that then Superintendent Epps took the Peter Styvesant statue off of public property. They had no business touching it in the first place. Only last night the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy announced at it's 13th Annual Awards Ceremony the base of the statue is going to be poured starting in June. Councilwoman Lopez worked for over a year with MaryAnn Kelleher and Cultural Affairs for a very long time in getting the funding for the base of the statue paid for and did a fundraiser at Dante's Restaurant on Newark Ave for it.
