of course and do you not think people should run for office and work to attempt to make their city better? why would you say I moved out of town? would you like to come over and see our place?
maybe you could share with the jclist world why you were calling and texting James over the summer and he wanted to no part of it?

this was posted in a public facebook group and I think it goes to the heart of the matter -
"As someone who has supported Mayor Fulop in the past, what I find so troubling about this recording is how it functions as a snapshot, providing a glimpse into what appears to be business-as-usual, behind the scenes at city hall. The officials sound very much like they are engaged in activities that they see as the norm. And while I think that it was great that the bid was not awarded, I do find the fact that neither of the parties involved were relieved of their professional duties to be quite disturbing. It really speaks volumes about the culture of this administration."

No you are shameless and wrong. This is what James posted on his facebook page -
"I was at Grove and Columbus when a young child was hit by a driver crossing the street. I'm praying for this child's family, friends, and neighbors. I'm grateful to the activists who have been fighting for safe streets in JC for years now. If you aren't part of the movement, today is the day to join Safe Streets JC."

This poster is not an election troll, and I agree with him. This is my concern. She came to Jersey City to take on this role first, then she does what other real estate and developer professionals have done before her, many of whom have been nice neighbors, and get involved, fund and support things on behalf of their employers. But the real estate and development business already has an out sized influence on Jersey City government.
I do not believe that someone at her level, general counsel can just turn a switch and is no longer involved. She still resides in her employers property. She is clearly a professional and capable person. I would welcome her to get involved in the non-profits that I have worked on over the years. Quote:

ok, a response-
Boston - James helped guide the city?s response to the marathon bombings. James was in charge of relations with the small businesses and residents locked out of their homes on Boylston St. due to the FBI investigation. and James also brought technology to bear on persistent problems such as rough streets and snow removal. Here?s a Boston Globe article written about his work: https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2012 ... 15vmr4aGHACNgP/story.html James also raised $85K through a never-before-used financing mechanism to fund a research collaborative between Boston University and the city of Boston. Newark - James built the foundation for a performance management system ? Brick CitiStat ? that Mayor Booker cited in his State of the City address. He was paid for his work as a Fellow from outside funding sources. Lastly he moved to Jersey City to follow his wife's career, who is now the chief of school planning, student enrollment and family support for the Newark School District. If you have an opportunity as he has been canvasing downtown, please talk with him, let him know your concerns and ask any questions. Who am I, just a guy that has been fortunate to work with many wonderful people on worthy initiatives in Jersey City over the years, and James' campaign is another one. Quote:

It is not a conflict of interest under law, but I understand Robin's concerns. I think this is a good example of the revolving door between government and lobbyists representing commercial interests looking for favorable advantage from government.
Robin is correct, she is/was a top executive and general counsel for a real estate company that renovates and rents at top of the market rents that some might say has contributed to the hyper gentrification we are experiencing, not only in downtown, but also elsewhere in the city. See this surprising (to me) listing in the Heights for $4,155 per month - https://jerseydigs.com/jersey-city-hei ... 4-bowers-street-for-rent/ If she says that she has severed her ties to her employer, note that I believe she still resides in one of their properties. The business for which she headed the legal department contributed $300k to the mayor's PAC (more than anyone but Carepoint), and also was a major beneficiary of a highly unusual taxpayer funded tax appeal by the city, that was fortunately rejected by the county. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... are_they_connected_1.html http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... sessments_homeowners.html Her political activities in Jersey City involved managing the school board candidacy of another employee of a local real estate company who had a controversial tenure and resigned due to personal reasons after only a year. Much of her community activities could be seen as an extension of her job. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... ard_member_resigning.html Clearly, she is a skilled professional, but so are some of the other Ward E candidates and real estate interests already have an oversized influence over our government. Should they have more? If one finds what I have written an attack on the candidate or wrong, I can be ignored or corrected.

Petitioning Mayor of Jersey City Steve Fulop
Mayor Fulop: Release the Tape Now.
According to an article today in Politico.com, several senior members of Mayor Steven Fulop's administration are alleged to have engaged in a scheme to rig a bid by the company "Good Energy" to perform "energy aggregation consulting" to Jersey City.
Under oath, two city employees have testified that administration members Anthony Cruz, Sean "Sully" Thomas, and Muhammad Akil took part in the scheme to circumvent the proper bidding process. According to the city employees, an undisclosed tape recording captures Akil and Thomas discussing the scheme to steer business to Good Energy. A lawsuit has now been brought under the Open Public Records Act seeking disclosure of the recording, as the city has refused to release it.
In order to ensure that the public is fully informed going into the upcoming mayoral election, it is essential that the Fulop administration immediately release the recording along with any and all other materials, including, but not limited to, emails, memoranda and reports that relate to the scheme. Accordingly, Civic JC calls upon the administration to release these vital materials without further delay.
This petition will be delivered to:
Mayor of Jersey City
Steve Fulop

yes, good call. I actually prefer Arturo's. The menu is broader (meat balls, ravioli, sandwiches, my favorite pizza - the santo) less costly and a little more elbow room. It is open for lunch and byob. But Razza is great and when things calm down, definitely worth trying (on an off evening.)

I could not let this valid observation by the local columnist Augie Torres a week or so ago pass by without noting -
"Just don't put too much faith in elected officials, they tend to disappoint and if one of them does something you like, then it's a genuine surprise. It's sort of like opening a gift not knowing what you'll get -- something wonderful or just re-gifted." When assessing your choice in the coming elections, really look at who the candidates are, what their history is and what they have done. It is hard but try to get a sense as to what their character and values are, because, the past determines the future.

http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2 ... to_make_street_safer.html
Grand Street changes designed to make street safer for all Jersey City officials say they will build the city's first protected bike lane on Grand Street. By Letters To The Editor Help us bring awareness and fact-based knowledge to the public. A clear lane for emergency vehicles. A left hand turning lane. Safer traffic flow. Quicker bus transit. Safe routes to school. An improved corridor for businesses. A safer road design on a street with crash rates that are among the highest in the city. These types of changes are possible for Grand Street. The Grand Street Concept Development is the next phase in an open, public process to bring the entire length of Grand into the 21st century. The primary goal is to make this corridor safer for all users: pedestrians, mass transit users, motorists and yes, those of us who use a bicycle. Presently Grand Street is dangerous. Vehicles are often traveling well over the speed limit. Pedestrians are struck by cars. Most cyclists are scared to ride on it. Access into Jersey City Medical Center can sometimes be a challenge. Businesses wish for more foot traffic. Solutions to these problems are presented in the Concept Development. Over the past eight years Bike JC has advocated for safer cycling in our city, and we selected Grand Street because of its poor safety record and because it connects so many neighborhoods, everyone wants to use it but it's design screams, CARS ONLY! Speed data was collected from the corridor to discover the average was between 35 & 40 mph, well over the citywide limit of 25 mph. We brought this information along with some rough design ideas to the council and they unanimously agreed that something must be done. What the city has done is to hire an engineering firm called Stantec to study the corridor and make design suggestions for a safer Grand Street and a company called Fitzgerald & Halliday to conduct public outreach. The Concept Development is the result of their work. Suggested safety improvement designs include a center turning lane that will keep traffic flowing in a more orderly and efficient manner as well as the added benefit of an open lane down the middle of the road to allow emergency vehicles to get to their destinations more quickly. Pedestrian safety improvements, protected bike lanes and improved mass transit are all possible. To get a complete understanding of this safety design, please go to our website at BikeJC.org and watch the embedded video on the right side of the page. Follow us on social media for announcements of public outreach opportunities where you can join in this democratic process to modernize Grand Street. Patrick Conlon, BikeJC, Jersey City

Even in their own words they have done very little beyond going with the flow.
Given the incredible opportunity they had to serve and having access to city resources, all make little case for re-election (the ones who have served since 2013) Better than nothing, should not be ok.

some people can want a museum piece that plays host to mostly national (mass commercial) performances. that is fine. my family would likely attend an event/performance once every few years. But presently, we go to the Loews 10-12 times a year, some years more for movies, theater, music and even the post JC St. Patricks Day Parade Party and every year we help with the JC Landmarks Conservancy Awards Ceremony and have seen numerous Art House and other performances. The current situation serves my family much more than AEG would. We should matter also, not just development for developments sake. So, we will support the FoL and a more balanced path.

Yes, it is a good school. Its not for people that want a suburban like experience with newer facilities or want to be able to come in and change things (and then leave for greener pastures.) He ran the school for the benefit of the kids that came to it and did so for decades. I did not always agree with him and did bump heads, but I always respected and admired him, and what he accomplished.
For those that like to like to point to ratings, please keep in mind that the top 10-15% of their students leave after 5th grade for the district-wide accelerated magnet programs in Academy One and MS4. Most of the top performing students are no longer in the school for grades 6 thru 8, but there were still students that went on from Cordero to McNair Academic. We found the academics rigorous and the school disciplined with next to no bullying. My wife and I were always welcomed in the school. There was breakfast with guidance and thanks to a few parents there were some great fundraising events which Principal Strynar thanked by cooking a dinner in the school home-economics lab. Its an urban school and your children will be in school with children from the greater neighborhood including the public housing projects. My children had classmates whose grandparents attended Cordero under Principal Strynar. Just like we teach children, do not judge a book by the cover. My children thrived at Cordero and it did not hold them back. Marvin Strynar is one of the great people in Jersey City who has left a lasting impression on my children. Quote:

Re: Support and Survival of the Arts in Jersey City
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Home away from home
|
a city must do many things well, from providing public safety, generating economic growth, improving mobility and transportation of goods, providing public education and yes supporting and sustaining the arts. and Jersey City is doing a good job of failing at it.
the root of it may be failings in leadership, from the failed property revaluation needed to provide tax equity across the city, the failure to provide community based policing policy, to our failure to fund our schools, and to adequately support, fund and sustain the arts. Jersey City together has been giving voice to issues here in a letter signed by more than 30 arts community leaders - http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2 ... adership_to_stem_vio.html and fortunately despite the city, arts leaders doing just that here - Jersey City's arts community needs dedicated support from city The Fulop administration has identified the arts as playing an important role in the economic and cultural development of Jersey City. However, artists and arts groups have been underfunded, excluded from city planning decisions, and marginalized as real estate and the cost of living in Jersey City have skyrocketed. Consequently, Jersey City arts groups have closed or become dormant, arts leaders have resigned or moved away, and ordinances/legislation designed to support the arts have been ignored or not enforced. After years of dialogue with the city about the arts sector's critical need for support, and without substantive policy from the city, artists and arts groups hereby set out below the requisite policy items necessary for arts in Jersey City to become sustainable and adequately supported. We, the undersigned, ask the following of the administration: 1. The City of Jersey City dedicates the entire 3% Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax to Arts/Culture local non-profit organizations, to be distributed by a neutral, professionally-qualified arts entity, acceptable to the arts community. 2. That all decisions involving future rezoning for "arts districts", major capital projects such as renovating the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre, re-opening of the Jersey City Museum, or the like, be made with a neutral, professionally-qualified arts entity at the table representing the arts community as a full negotiating partner. It is imperative that the voices of seasoned artists, dancers, performers, and professionals from the arts field have a say in policy that will affect them, and the public, for years to come. 3. That all programs currently underway that involve the arts - including the JC Mural Arts program - be immediately halted, until a system of transparency is put into place and input from the art community is heard and incorporated. We want there to be murals and we want there to be art in JC, but we want to ensure that this is done in a productive and responsible way that reflects the very best of our city. 4. The Department of City Planning assigns a staff person charged with the responsibility and accountability for upholding all arts provisions written into city ordinances, zoning, land use plans, and building plans. This staff person will also be responsible for advocating for arts space, artist housing, and other opportunities to provide funding and resources to arts groups as building projects are presented in Jersey City.

I believe it could be phased over 3 years which JC Together recommended. They also supported legislation to extend to 5 years. But, the city will have delayed close to 4 more years, achieving similar effect. And once the city committed and engaged a reval firm, it now has failed to finalize the tax maps (which work should have been initiated back in May).
While a phase in would appear reasonable, the city has willfully delayed it at every turn. Does it make sense to further delay? Quote:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/feature ... llow-inmates-into-company
The Kushners and their partners in Jersey City, the KABR Group, also quietly became major financial backers of Progressive New Jersey Inc., a nonprofit that Fulop?s allies helped set up in 2014 to promote worker safety and other issues. Although the group does not disclose its donors, two people involved with the organization said that members of the Kushner-KABR partnership made a $100,000 donation. (A Kushner spokesman declined to comment on the donation.) Last year, when the mayor was publicly mulling entering the New Jersey governor?s race, Progressive New Jersey made a $400,000 contribution to a pro-Fulop political action committee. After a public outcry, that donation was returned. Those moves came as the Fulop administration has been negotiating possible subsidies for the Kushner projects. Although Fulop has been critical of using taxpayer funds to underwrite developers, Jersey City has been in discussions with the Kushners and KABR to provide $10 million in redevelopment area bonds to help finance the project, according to documents filed with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Mayor Fulop?s office said he was unaware that the Kushners had employed his chief strategist to work on development projects in the city or donated to Progressive New Jersey Inc. Jennifer Morrilli, his press secretary, said Fulop had never received financial support from the Kushners. Any requests the Kushner companies make for tax abatements or bond subsidies will be decided strictly according to city policy, Morrilli said. KABR didn?t respond to a request for comment.
