I'm continually reminded how little the Jersey City government cares about the interests of the residents of this town. They're only out for themselves. Screw what the people want!

I would rate that area a 9 out of 10 in terms of safety...Jersey City has it's fair share of crime, but that area is pretty safe. Always mind your surroundings though as a general tip.

Re: Alternate commute ideas

Home away from home

I was once like you, and I believed that someone would suddenly come up with some great idea for commuting options (bike tunnel through the Holland was one of my favorites too), but I have come to accept the fact that the Port Authority does not have your best interests in mind. In fact, they're more than happy to provide you and me with inadequate service while they hike their fares and rake in more profits. The five stages of grief is a perfect model and can be applied to Jersey City residents.

1. Denial - "Oh, I don't mind these new toll hikes and train fares...they're absolutely needed and the fact that PATH had a record number of riders in 2011 doesn't mean anything! Well, at least Whole Foods is coming!"

2. Anger - "I CAN'T BELIEVE THESE A-HOLES!! IN FOUR YEARS THE PATH TRAIN IS GOING TO COST MORE THAN THE MTA SUBWAY IN NYC! OH AND I CAN'T GET AN UNLIMITED CARD THAT WORKS IN NYC AND JERSEY BECAUSE THE MTA AND THE PORT AUTHORITY CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT THE PROFITS?!? BS!!!!

3. Bargaining - "I'm going to start an "alternate commute ideas" thread on jclist.com and talk this one out." The PA better get their act together, otherwise I'm gonna start a "kayak to work" club!

4. Depression - "WHY DID I EVER BELIEVE JERSEY CITY WAS A GOOD INVESTMENT!? WHOLE FOODS ISN'T COMING!

5. Acceptance - "Ok....Jersey City is, 'good enough.'"

Japanese people pushers would be awesome. That'll teach you fools to stand right in front of the door. I fantasize about clotheslining a few people during my rush hour commute. The Toll Bros. project is a behemoth (40 not 30 stories on the Southwest tower alone and there are three towers). This will make a logistical nightmare for the PATH in the morning. I read somewhere that it will hold the largest amount of retail space as well for any proposed project in the area. I believe it's 40,000 square feet of retail at the base of all three combined towers.

So the space on the corner of Marin and Morgan is officially a KRE Management office. Lame.

We dig our own metaphorical graves when it comes to dining in Jersey City. If you really want better options, stop frequenting these sub-par restaurants and focus your attention on the restaurants that consistently produce good meals (by the way, does anyone know of any? ). I'm hoping Thirty Acres is a catalyst to better dining in this area. We really need a restaurant to set a new standard.

Trader Joes has overhead costs as with any business, but do you really think that staffing, rent, and their transportation costs would really put them anywhere near a loss for the entire year? They would be making money in this city if they had a good location.

I've lived here long enough to realize that neither Trader Joes or Whole Foods will be coming to JC. JC will never be Manhattan, and it will never even be Williamsburg (for those that are hoping). There is too much political corruption and red tape in this town for any true progress to be made. I look forward to the day Jersey City screws itself by building so many high rises without proper transit capacity....oh wait, never mind.

After a little more research, it turns out KRE offers retail space and residential space at Grove Point as well as other residential and retail spaces in Jersey City and the tri-state area. Hopefully it's something worthwhile.

I walked by and actually looked at the inspection signage. Apparently it's a "KRE management" office unit. I guess another realty office?

Just to add another question to the "what's being built" thread, does anyone know what's going on with the space at Grove Point that's on the corner of Marin and Morgan St.? There was work being done this evening.

Boyle's Thirty Acres was a large wooden bowl arena in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was built specifically for the world heavyweight championship bout between Jack Dempsey of the United States and Georges Carpentier of France on July 2, 1921. It held approximately 80,000 fans and was built at a cost of $250,000. It was situated around Montgomery Street and Cornelison Avenue, on a plot of marshland owned by John P. Boyle.

If you have access to a video camera and a tripod, you could always try to set up the camera inconspicuously, or if you feel inclined, set up a security cam that can be recorded to a computer. Either one will give you irrefutable evidence for your landlord or if need be a court.

There are already plenty of "higher income "families in JC. My problem is that it is damn frustrating not to have amenities HERE. It's a pain to always have to go outside my community to fulfill my basic needs. Some of us can not exist on processed foods. I need a place to buy various organic foods. I'd also like better quality restaurants.
Do we really need more residential housing which will bring more people to a place where the current conditions aren't sufficient for the present population?
I think the city is letting us down and victimizing us. It's very disheartening.

This is Jersey City, not Manhattan. What do you expect? Do you really expect this city to uphold the high standards of Manhattan? It never will. It will always be, "good enough."

#1 - Whole Foods will NEVER come to Jersey City. EVER. We are in too close of a proximity to Tribeca's Whole Foods, thus they offer us a $15 delivery charge as our consolation prize. However, there may still be a chance for us to get a Trader Joe's.

#2 - "Higher income residents" will choose NYC over Jersey City any day of the week (unless of course you bought into the whole "Jersey City is up and coming" lie)

#3 - You don't need to make six figures a year to be able to afford a decent meal. Good taste transcends all income levels! Just because most people in Jersey City accept mediocrity, doesn't mean I'm willing to as well.

how is Jersey City impacted by the lost taxes that have been paid to the county and even more so the continued increasing school taxes?

at least this should be done in an open and transparent manner with an evaluation and recommendation process ....

You seem to have a lot of opposition for Goya. Does the fact that they're a heavily Republican supporting company have anything to do with your stance? I would think having such a large company in our backyard could only help to stimulate our economy here.

It would be even better to have a pedestrian walking bridge from JC to NYC. So many cities around the world have done this....and they usually become great place for communities and tourists.

They have a walkway already built leading to Ellis Island but there are some politics and safety issues involved, the goes for a bridge going over to Manhattan. That will probably never occur due to post 9-11 concerns. And could you imagine the foot traffic ! I would like to see this happen especially if bike lanes were allocated.

If this were to happen, the PA would no longer have their profitable racket and they would no longer have their stronghold, giving the NJ commuters and residents the shit end of the stick every time they wanted to go into NY...and thus you're absolutely correct by saying it's politics.

I also wish there were a way to bike into New York (besides over the GWB). It's a shame there isn't a a small pedestrian/bike bridge connecting downtown JC to Manhattan, but then again it's imperative that the Port Authority squeeze us for every dollar we've earned! TAXES, TAXES, TAXES! After all, we as New Jersey residents have the highest property taxes in the country! What's an extra few dollars a week to commute to work matter to us anyway? We know that we also need to have the responsibility to foot the bill for New York sky scrapers while we're at it! Bike lanes.....a resounding yes. However, do I think Jersey City will ever do it? No. Surprise me Jersey City.
