I agree 100% if JJ and JClist did not report crime in the city, the city will be crime free.

Jersey City proving affordable alternative to NYC

Six years ago, Brittin Bleakley walked into a friend's Jersey City home with her daughter for a play date and fell in love.

RACHELLE MIGDAL/WEICHERT REALTORS
Brittin Bleakley, shown with her children, and her husband bought their four-bedroom house in Jersey City, above, for $270,000. The city has great variety in its housing, including an 1865 brick row house, listed at $1.15 million, and a modern unit in the Canco Lofts, also on the market, at $419,000.

JESSICA BROWN/JB REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY
She loved the home's back yard, the old-house details like the original stained glass window, the finished basement and the size ? four bedrooms.

"I said if you ever want to sell this house, I'm your gal," Bleakley said. "I was joking but really wasn't. It's a great house on a great street."

Bleakley, her husband and their two children started looking to buy after renting in Jersey City for many years. They heard the friend was actually interested in selling and moved into their dream home this summer.

"She had done a lot of work on the house, it was move-in ready," said Bleakley who paid $270,000. "It's wonderful. I'm so lucky."

When people think of Jersey City, they often think of two extremes: luxe waterfront condos with sky-high price tags or crime-ridden neighborhoods with boarded up buildings. Jersey City also recently hit the news when it was announced that reality TV stars Snooki and JWoww would live there to shoot a new show.

But beyond the headlines, the state's second-largest city has more than a dozen neighborhoods, each with its own vibe. The Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park sections are known for stately row houses; Lincoln Park has sprawling Victorians. The waterfront and Newport have luxury condo towers and the Heights has colonials and lower-rise condos.

Councilwoman Lopez Cites Crime Problems As Reason Citywide Tax Revaluation Is Extended One Year
Home away from home
Home away from home

Five months into a projected 18-month long tax revaluation process, Jersey City has requested a one year extension from Hudson County to give Realty Appraisal Company more time to complete the revaluation.

?The Tax Assessor has formally requested with the County Board of Taxation a one year extension for the City to conduct the property tax revaluation after it became apparent that a fair and comprehensive assessment could not be conducted within the current timeframe,? said Mayor Healy. ?A variety of technical issues, including a lengthy reconciliation of the City?s tax maps and higher-than-anticipated inspection refusals contributed to this delay.?

According to City Spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill, Hudson County has granted the extension, which will project Realty to complete the process by May 1, 2014.

But the hold-up is the latest hitch in a plan that residents and some on the Council have questioned from the start, and the delay has given new life to the debate over whether the city should have pursued a revaluation in the first place. The revaluation is costing the city $3.15 over a five year period.

?Part of the problem is a lack of communication,? said Ward C Councilwoman Nidia Lopez, one of the three Council members to vote against the measure to hire Realty Appraisal back in April of 2011. The company began the revaluation in September before it became clear they would need more time earlier this month.

?If only 10% of 50,000 properties have been assessed so far, isn?t this a bad indication as far as their effectiveness? It doesn?t make sense, something doesn?t feel right,? she continued.

?We gave this company $3.2 million, and if they?re not doing the job, can they reimburse our money so we can re-invest it?? she asked. ?They can get the money back next year.?

Realty hosted a forum to explain the process and to allay concerns among residents about what the revaluation could mean for their tax bill back in May of 2011, but concerns remained among residents.

Lopez said the problems stemmed from a ?lack of communication? due in part because ?not everyone reads the paper and not everyone attends Council meetings.? But unquestionably, perceptions of crime tie in, she said.

?I received calls from renters who did not understand why a realty company from West New York, which doesn?t have the word Jersey City anywhere, went into their homes,? she said. ?People are afraid of what?s going on right now with the crime status.?

The opinion was echoed by resident John Seborowski, who said at last Wednesday?s Council meeting that ?homeowners [are] afraid to allow inspectors into their homes? because of perceptions of crime. ?If we can?t afford additional police presence, why are we spending $3 million on an unneeded revaluation??

The problems facing the inspectors were predicted by former Planning Board member Jeff Kaplowitz, who back in April said he recalled similar problems when the city undertook a revaluation in 1988. He also criticized the approach outlined by Realty Appraisal, the firm hired to do the reval, as being insensitive Jersey City?s demographics.

?It?s really obnoxious that you have a company that says, ya know, we?ll tax at the highest rate possible if we can?t get [into a property] and deal with it later,? Kaplowitz said. ?This is a city with a lot of immigrants, a lot of people scared to open their doors ? and these are many of the people who will be penalized with higher taxes.?

At the time, resident Yvonne Balcer also argued against the reval, and issued a warning to the council members by noting that ?none of the council members who voted for the reval last time were re-elected.?

She added that the process by which residents can appeal assessments would cause significant financial difficulty for everyone but the wealthy.

?In order to appeal, you must pre-pay taxes from previous years,? she said. ?Last time homeowners got pushed out because of the reval. It?s a real burden on people who pay the real share of taxes in Jersey City.?

Re: Montgomery Gardens housing complex: Man stabbed in the neck

I grew up in Williamsburg Brooklyn in the mid 80's b4 it was hipster-land one thing that is different in NYC is that there are tons of programs for young people to keep them off the streets. like city gyms, pools, etc. Jersey City offers nothing to young people. I interviewed several young kids hanging out in Greenville and asked them why are they loitering and not doing anything with there time and their response was there is nothing to do here but hang out. its a shame that the city does not provide anything for young people. There is no city gyms, clubs etc. If you want kids to stay out of trouble we have to do better. from time to time I work out in the city gym in NYC and its always full of teenagers which is great. JC ignores young people.

Vets shunned by Jersey City hotel: Hudson County Executive
Home away from home
Home away from home

On the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 7, a contingent of Hudson County veterans supported by family, friends and local public officials, gathered at Exchange Place on the Jersey City waterfront to commemorate the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor as they have for decades. Their Dec. 7 memorial service is actually the longest running Pearl Harbor commemoration outside of Hawaii.
The group, which included two veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack, both over 90 now, laid a memorial wreath upon the waters of the Hudson River, observed a moment of silence and listened to remarks reflecting on the day's historical significance. Our office usually then treats the group to a simple breakfast of coffee and bagels at a nearby eatery. However this year, the restaurant was closed for renovations.
Since the traditional site of the memorial wreath laying is just outside the doors of the Hyatt Regency Jersey City, our staff thought the hotel's management would welcome the opportunity to help by allowing us to set up a table for coffee and bagels (which we would provide) in the hotel lobby.
Even though the memorial takes place early in the morning and the group would be no more than 20 persons in total -- on site for less than an hour -- the hotel's management refused us, forcing a small group of veterans, most of them seniors, to walk three city blocks to the next nearest location for a bite and coffee after the wreath laying.
The Hyatt Regency Jersey City's management insisted that the group, who would have been located in a small corner of the lobby, would somehow create a crowding problem with other morning events at the hotel. Our staff later learned there were no events scheduled at the time. It turned out that the Hyatt Regency Jersey City just couldn't be bothered to help us save some proud veterans a long walk for a cup of coffee after the memorial service.
In response to the hotel management's disgraceful behavior, I will no longer attend or take part in any other functions, governmental or political, held at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City in the future.

Lies, damned lies and statistics': Political Insider

Samuel Clemens liked to tell his audience something about numbers by saying, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."
Some Jersey City residents can relate to this.
On Thursday, Mayor Jerramiah Healy once again rattled off FBI stats -- collected from local police numbers -- to back his constant assertion that crime has dropped "significantly" since he took office in a special election, November 2004.
"Our residents should know that Jersey City is one of the safest large cities in New Jersey and continues to become safer every single day," he said.
