Water pressure Downtown (again)?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Too low to fill a toilet on a upper floor at the moment. VVP area. Anyone else?

Loved the "end of boil water" announcement last night at 8:45. Not that they ever gave me a robo call to say that the boil water recommendation was in effect as of last Saturday. Heard about it Sunday on JCList.

First place I'd try is Joe's Auto Electric. They do full service, not just electrical. Honest, no BS, local. Close to Coles on that alley that runs one way (west) between Jersey Ave and Coles, just 100 feet south of Newark Ave.

What's the coverage of this stuff on an asphalt roll roof that's never been painted? At $79 per bucket, it could end up being a waste of money, since my roof only has 1-2 years left. At some point I plan on replacing it with a IB Roof Systems membrane, where the material itself is white.

A 5-gallon bucket will do almost 2 coats on a 12.5 x 35 roof, and more than a full coat on a 25 x 45 roof. Want to buy yourself another 5 years? Hit the roof with tar on ALL spots that look the least suspect. Wait a week. Paint this stuff on and relax but check it annually since you know it's getting near the end.

If you decide to to a tear-off of your asphalt roofing and replace it with a membrane rubber-type coating, the common practice is to use no vapor barrier on the bare wood roof surface, just nail down closed-cell insulation foamboard (comes in different thicknesses and basically thicker is better but slightly more expensive) then the membrane is installed with a big propane torch to REALLY seal the seams. Then apply silver/white/whatever coating and plan to replace it every 5-7 years. Maintained like that, a membrane roof will outlive you! There's probably no insulation at all between your rafters if it's the original inside top floor ceiling. Foamboard nailed on top is a lot cheaper than ripping up all the roof boards, filling between the joists (from the top) and then re-sheathing with plywood before you install the membrane. Been there, done that twice...

SW29,

We could probably get into a long debate over a couple of beers on this but, simply put, diurnal temperature variation is a function of conduction, meaning solar radiation from the absorbing surfaces (roads, roofs, bare dirt, etc.) being passsed to the air levels above it but this air-to-air transfer of heat is VERY inefficient. Reflectivity causes NO harm and no foul. The silver paint reduces the heat in the rafters in the summertime without question. But to say it results in heat loss during the wintertime is basically wrong. Any snow on the roof is actually an insulator from heat loss (and the roof color doesn't mean squat at that point) and if there's no snow and your roof is black then yes you get some winter heat in the rafters but that's where all the heat from your furnace is ending up anyway, so your boiler is still cranking away to keep the 1st floor comfortable.

And I cracked up on the green paint joke and I agree with Cory about roof strength before considering a couple of tons of soil and vegetation.

Maybe they'll investigate why the parking authority scooters are parked in front of the main library on Jersey Ave for hours at a time instead of actually "working". All we need now is a "Tip Hotline" and we can clean up a lot of the crap going on around here...

Really an easy DIY job if you can carry a 50 lb. bucket to the roof or have a stronger friend. And it's maybe $70 for the materials vs. 500?+? for a roofer to do it. Buy a 5 gallon can, schlep it up to the roof, stir it with a broomstick or similar long pole for about 20 minutes (this stuff is THICK, so stir it a LOT), then pour a puddle and use a paint roller on a long threaded-end pole. Takes about an hour to do the whole thing on a typical roof. It lasts about 5-7 years before you need to re-coat it. It does make a difference in the heat on your top floor and cooling costs. Works great for both asphalt and rubber type roofing material. Done this many times over 27 years and 3 houses...

Definitely Bob:

bfunk27@gmail.com

Great guy, super attention to detail, totally trustworthy, good communicator, always on time,, always cleans up, has installed so many 1000s of subway tiles you wouldn't believe it, and is currently finishing a new bathroom ceramic tile floor for me. Tricky job with many angle cuts required.

Wouldn't hire anyone else at this point-

Epps gone, Richardson way behind and highly unlikely. This evening is getting better by the minute. It's gonna get interesting for the next few years, and that's a good thing. 30 years here and FINALLY we might actually have local government and representation that does what's right for us all, not just themselves and their family members and "friends" (paid or otherwise) ...

I wonder how many of the 168 people who've read this thread have actually had an appliance fail during the original or what would have been the extended warranty period?

This wasn't about TVs or other home electronics originally, but the same thought applies.

PC Richards will try to sell you anything and everything "extra". Can't speak for Home Depot. Statistically (and I was in the insurance business for 25 years and the consumer electronics business before that) it's a bad purchase. Yes, you might get a lemon and after fighting with them for a week or 3 or 6 (without your appliances working) they might fix it. Or maybe not...

Save your money up front. Buy a good brand with positive product reviews. Really, the extended warranty is a major sales pitch for the salesperson because they get a bonus commission on it, then the store gets a cut and the insurance company (which might or might not be owned by the store) gets the rest of the premium. Truly a foolish purchase in my opinion.

Re: What do we think of Hamilton Square South?

Ugly. Silverman brothers should go back to the drawing board or find another architect. Also heard that they're working on plans for redevelopment of the corner across from City Hall at Montgomery and Grove. Was originally slated to be 6 stories there with retail at street level. Given that Sandy flooding reached about FOUR FEET of water during hurricane Sandy in what is now a parking lot, an underground parking garage would be moronically stupid but I think that was originally also in the plans...

But it's still 37 degrees and certainly not sticking, 20% of my neighbors who didn't get the message about garbage collection still have theirs out at the curb and in another 1-2 hours we'll find out if the sweeper IS actually sweeping today...

While it is a bit lopsided here it is:

You can go to the city website and read the entire notice.

http://www.cityofjerseycity.com

My Neighbor's "Cliff Notes" version of it is as follows:

For some reason the garbage is suspended but parking and street sweeping is not. Just like Jersey City to make decisions that are backwards. Really....with snow on the ground, why would you bother to sweep the streets and make people alternate side street park?

We should start a betting pool on whether the sweepers will come if there's even one flake on the ground.

If any of our Council Representatives monitor this forum I'm sure we'd all love to hear from them-

JC_Man,

He's technically an Independent Contractor doing temporary work. And since he has no employees , nor is he hiring any subcontractors, he is NOT required to have Work Comp Insurance and you are not liable for any possible workplace-related injuries. (20 years as a licensed insurance broker).

No local place that I know of. A bunch of sites online if you want to ship your tapes, but it's something like $50-80 per cassette to transfer to DVD.

One other idea: Buy the cheapest WORKING U-Matic unit on eBay for maybe $100, make your transfers (assuming you have suitable capture hardware on a PC) and sell it for close to what you paid.

Those machines were so expensive that they were rarely found in home use. Good luck!

Re: Epps for Jersey City council?

Steve Fulop is probably laughing himself silly over this. Epps was a complete disaster for the public school system of Jersey City, so why ANYONE would think he could effectively help to govern even a portion of this city is a complete mystery to me. And if you've ever heard him speak in public (I have) you'd wonder if he'd even made it through 8th grade, much less an advanced degree.

Yup, once again. But at least this time they got the voting location right, FWIW. Think you get any help from your councilperson? Nah, just a kinda "piss off" e-mail reply if you're in Ward F. And I quote (from less than an hour ago): From: Michele Massey <MMassey@jcnj.org> Date: June 1, 2012 3:42:08 PM EDT To: (Removed for privacy) Subject: RE: WARD F from Ward E voting issues again raising their head Good Day, The Board of Elections were contacted and YES, once again a mistake was made. Didn't lift a finger even when a few thousand of us who were formerly in Ward E and now (unfortunately) in Ward F got assigned polling places a mile or more from our homes. Massey couldn't be reached by phone and didn't return messages or e-mails.

Her defensive and unhelpful "aid" simply directed calls to the Board of Elections (the same idiots who supposedly made this "mistake" in the first place even though it was a blatently-deliberate attempt at vote suppression). Steve Fulop was working his butt off to communicate with everyone but he has zero control over the BoE.

Massey has so far given the impression that she's as useful as a screen door on a submarine. Wish she would wouldn't waste our time even running. She and Healy might want to start working on a job search, 'cause people in JC (especially those of us who've been here for decades) have had it with this pitiful excuse for government and change is coming...

He was supposed to be sentenced today but no news yet. Anybody have any info? I seriously hope he gets the max or more. He cheated us to enrich himself, he got paid to keep his jobs while saying he was innocent, then pleaded guilty just too late for us to have any say over his replacement. What an A-hole. May he enter the prison system as a tight end and come out as a wide receiver...

The man is a complete moron. Don't care about race, period. You listen to him speak in public and you wonder if he has a clue what he's talking about because he comes off like an idiot despite his degrees. You look at the status of the JC public schools after all these years under his so-called "leadership" and you just want to cry. Been here 25 years and raised two kids.
