Fair enough that the cops might have set this up....

It is understandable for Fulup supporters to be in denial. However, anyone with a passing acquaintance with the JCPD knows that Cowan was a quintessential hack, unlike the vast majority of JCPD who are remarkably conscientious given the institutional pressures to be dishonest, from day one of his life as a cop. He came out early in support of Steve and was rewarded. The mayor has plans and he knows that such loyalty is key to them. Loyalty involves favors. Thus, it would not suprise me if there is merit to this Complaint.

Re: St. Peter's University- Bill Cosby Show

And they wonder why Catholics are leaving in droves. Who will be left to turn off the lights? But silly- this is the renewal intended by the Council. There may be one or two active Jesuits left at St. Peters U (the average age of American Jesuit is probably now like 72) and this is probably excitiing for them. The Eucharist offered as the Church requires is not. Bishop Donato, who would use all the terrible power of his office to stop a Latin Mass in even the most forgotten or foresaken corner of his his territory, gave his personal imprimatur to this. Who knows, maybe he'll get a VIP subscription and think of funny things to do with his mitre or crozier. Leave the mysterium termendum et fascinans to those who pursue enlightenment in an Ashram. And really, how does this add to the mission of the place as a Universit? Monty Python in its most hilarious and anti Christian moment could not have thought up these things. Sure, Cosby in the pulpit bringing down the house in that incredible Byzantine space. And then, the Jersey Boys will be perfoming. Never mind that the sound will probably be deafening since it was designed for unamplified prayer- not rock and roll music. Anyway, rock on St. Peter's University.

Not to be tendentious, and yea not everything in the story adds up, but this sort of thing is far from unhead of. I am by the court house a lot and there have been some nasty cat fights among the Dickensen kids as they dismiss or lunch. Perhaps this List was too hard on departing Board of Ed Superintent Epps who said something to the effect that young girls today are the worst. I do think the culture presents young girls with all the wrong role models and signals- not to sound like my grandmother or anythingn.

LOL, your PS is pretty funny. I don't know why I feel compelled to check in every month or so on this thread adding to the astronimical hits it gets. I have not been there in years as I was ejected for writing an equivocal post here in JC list (under my old handle of PubliusIII (see posts #133 and #259) which was disabled for some reason beyond my feeble understanding of computers lest I be accussed of trying to avoid detection), But if my public shaming by Taqueria was part of an orchestrated campaign to keep up interest, then they are beyond geniuses as even you, who never left, is now going to patronize the place. BTW, I live on the wrong side of TP too.

Re: Mosquito Spraying

Home away from home

Same with us! And in fact, I got sick in late August with something strange and it seemed to fit the mild version of West Nile.

Speaking of spraying- I had to laugh when watching The Tree of Life when the kids ride their bikes in an out of the truck spraying for mosquitoes as it brought back memories of growing up on the edge of the Pine Barrens when we did the same thing.

What do most people think about recalling 9/11? Is it a platform for jingoism? Is it just something most want to put behind us? Does it occassion too much of the victim mentality? Does it bring back memories, bad for most on this board, of George Bush (what ever happened to the poster on JCLIST with George as his avatar?)? I remember as everyone was running back on Montegomery Street from the water's edge freaked out by the fall of the first tower while helicopters barked orders to retreat and just as fighter planes came low over the city, no one really sure in the confusion if they were friendly or not, and an old timer who was on the sidewalk was calling out: this is our Pearl Harbor. I thought it a bit ridiculous at the time and wondered how the old woman with an eight grade education managed to summon up instantly such an historic perspective. Anyway, may light perpetual shine on the victims and on all the faithful departed.

Re: Mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus in Jersey City

I have been eaten up by mosquitoe this year around town like I have not been since being a kid in the Pine Barrens. It makes me wonder if the mild flu like illness I have had for the past three or four days might be West Nile. Internet info seems to say 80% are asymptomatic, about 20% get a mild case (headache and fatigue being prominent symptoms, and less than 1% get life threatening West Nile Fever.

The beautiful new pool is empty of swimmers!
Home away from home
Home away from home

The beautiful new pool at Johnston Avenue opens at 7 in the moring and, until yesterday, closed at 7:30 PM. The last four days I have been there with my kids and we have been virtually the only ones. From 7 to 7:30 last night, we were the only ones in either the fun pool or the eight lane regulation 25 meter pool. As we were leaving, we were told that as of today, the pool will close at 7:00 because no one is using it. It also is nearly empty early in the morning. So perhaps that will be discontinued as well. On Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, there were perhaps 20 people in the big pool and 10 in the little pool It is a bit strange given how people kevetch about needing things like this- only to have people lose interest after the first few weeks. BTW, even when it was overwhelmed with people the first few weeks it opened, I never saw any violence and two cops are stationed there daily anyway. Finally, the pool is being maintained pretty well. The deck and locker rooms are clean. They could vacuum the pool more often and insist on bathing caps. The water clarity fluctuates. Not sure why.

PS
WebMaster please don't force this into the prior Johnston Avenue Pool thread as this has a significantly different slant
