Well I agree that if anyone were ever to make such a statement, it would be appropriate to correct them.

My point is that it doesn't matter if some areas west of the highway are "officially" downtown. That's not how people here use the term or how they understand it.

Would it make any real difference if every time someone says "Downtown JC" we add an asterisk that says "excluding those blocks west of the highway that don't really fit in any officially defined neighborhood? Most of the area in question is rail yards and cemetery anyway.

Many on this forum were unhappy with his governance before these arrests. What difference does it make to his actual 'nuts and bolts' governance now?

Seems like the longtime critics may feel somewhat vindicated by this situation -- but again, what difference does it make? What evidence is there that he will govern any 'worse' -- now that he is the subject of a federal complaint -- than he did before?

Specifics would be appreciated. Thank you.

My original post was quite specific. The public has no confidence in a council run by someone under federal indictment for corruption and he will be totally preoccupied with his legal defense and have no time for public service. A federal indictment is not a traffic infraction.

You can "define" downtown any way you please, but most people here use the term to refer to the part of town east of the highway and south of the tunnel.

"The northbound section of Greene street has been closed in front of 77 Hudson for about a year"

More like three years. I would say I'm amazed at how long developers get to co-opt public streets for private purposes, but given recent news it's hard to be surprised about any favors developers get around here. I understand in an urban environment some of this is necessary, but shouldn't they be required to move more quickly?

There are codes of ethics governing federal prosecutors. If they use the indictment process without evidence as a political weapon they will be fired, disbarred and prosecuted.

Re: Newark Avenue StreetScape

What I don't understand is how any effort to create an appealing streetscape downtown is going to succeed as long as the scar of Columbus west of Grove runs right through it. It looks like a war zone.

It appears the HDSID plan just skips right over Columbus as if it weren't there. At least I think so. If you go to the HDSID website (http://www.jcdowntown.org) and download the "HDSID Plan" you get a one page brochure showing the proposed fixtures for the streetscape with a map showing nothing planned for Columbus west of Grove. Their links to news reports lead to "file not found" error messages.

Is there anyway to read more details about their intentions?

While I doubt anyone ever proceeds through the transition from 139W to 1/9N at a speed high enough to cause injury, the costs of all the fender benders probably add up and any reduction in accidents should be factored into the economic benefits.

Not to mention that the interchange (if you can call it that) as presently configured is an affront to human dignity and a profound embarrassment to the people of New Jersey.

Sure, you're "presumed innocent" as a matter of criminal law, but that does not mean you are entitled to hold an office of public trust while under a cloud that 1) eviscerates public confidence in government and 2) will occupy almost all of your time and attention.

This cannot stand.

Times examines causes of corruption in NJ

A decade-long building boom has flooded towns with millions of development dollars, as well as wealthy businessmen eager to secure sewer permits and zoning waivers. The Democratic Party firmly dominates local politics, turning most elections into sleepy coronations. The state?s news organizations, once vigorous watchdogs, have been decimated by a deep industry downturn.

Add to all that the fact that New Jersey is divided into hundreds of tiny fiefdoms, where part-time elected officials without much education and with small salaries wield considerable power, and the heady mix of arrogance, control and promised payoffs dissolves the will of even the most determined reformer.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Update

I was under the impression that they found some old lead fill in a part of the park that was not touched the last time it was renovated. Obviously, they need to test the rest of the park but I don't think we need to worry that they've discovered a toxic waste dump or to assume that removing the old fill from this area will delay the project along the lines of a major remediation.

Re: The Beacon
Home away from home
Home away from home

I find this whole debate quite odd and can only assume that it mainly about certain people's egos. Unlike most of you I have some perspective in that I lived in the Beacon as a renter (and have no financial interest in it) and I have lived (and currently live) downtown.

Obviously, the surroundings of the Beacon are less appealing than certain parts of downtown, but too much focus on that ignores the unique positives of the place. Most of all there are the spectacular buildings themselves and the psychic satisfaction of participating in an effort to re-purpose them and preserve not only the architecture, but the history of a location of central importance in JC's history. Next, Boss Hague knew what he was doing when he chose the location. I was only on the 7th floor, but I had spectacular views of Hudson county and Manhattan because the Beacon is on a hilltop.

Yes, you do trade off the convenience of being able to walk around the corner for services for these positives, but the shuttle is quite reliable and quick and it's really a personal decision whether you think the trade-off of convenience for charm and space is worth it. Personally, I would not recommend the Beacon if you don't have a car.

Safety is a red herring in that crime happens all over town. The Montgomery Gardens population keeps to itself (though they do seem to enjoy walking into oncoming traffic on Montgomery and I don't advise hitting anyone) and as far as I know doesn't hassle anyone at the Beacon which has good security anyway.

Yes, buying at the Beacon is a vote of confidence in the long-term prospects of the area and it may be a long time before an appealing stroll around he neighborhood or walking to a decent supermarket are realities. But it is already a viable community with impressive amenities and I feel the potential of these long-term improvements represent real upsides for the future. The key to remember is that even if they do not come about, it is already a unique and pleasant place to live.

The shilling by owners is understandable. We all like to build up confidence in our little neighborhoods, especially if we are owners. The attacks by people who don't know the complex are just strange. Especially the idea that the hospital was evicted by gentrifies. The hospital abandoned the buildings because they were not suited to modern needs and due to Hague's grandiosity they were always way too large. Very few hospitals remain in old buildings. The developer has rescued them from decay.

I still have my bike (recently purchased from Grove St Bicycles). I parked it in front of Club H the other day and someone left a note that I had to lock up my wheels. I thought it would be OK in front of the gym.

Thanks for the warning if you read this. I'm not going to release the front wheel every time I park, but I did buy a cable for the front wheel and I'll be sure my main lock (Kryptonite U) passes through the rear wheel.

It's really sad that we have to be so paranoid.

Re: The Beacon

C-709 was the apartment I rented last May. When I first moved in the developer offered it for sale at $710,000. After about six months he reduced the asking price to $570,000. I see it sold for $370,000 plus commission--apparently $407,000. That's just about what I thought was a fair price. It seems the auction worked fairly well for everyone.

Re: New York Times: Beacon Luxury Condos, All Bids Considered

Home away from home

Until recently I was renting one of the apartments Metrovest is selling. Fortunately, I moved out the day before the open houses began. I stopped by to clean up on the first day of the open house and the parade of people coming in would have driven me crazy for 1 day, let alone 8.

I can't imagine what the earlier poster complaining about a lack of "class" could be talking about. The building is friendly and professional. Perhaps he enjoys pretension? That you won't find at the Beacon. Perhaps he wants a less diverse group of neighbors? I liked the mix.

I suspect the auction prices will be quite a bit higher than some people expect--close to Metrovest's current asking prices. The developer described an auction for another Hudson County development he went to check out before going ahead with the auction and there were 1,000 bidders there and all units available sold. The presence of so many bidders will generate the confidence people need to bid.

BTW, the way the auction works is that all apartments are bid on in groups--all two-bedrooms together, for example. The high bidder gets to select his choice of two-bedroom unit from the list and the auction starts over again for the next choice from the list. There is a limit of one apartment per buyer and they expect most to be sold to people who intend to live there.

The 12 apartments sold without reserve are the first twelve to sell, which will be the most desirable units. After that, the developer can stop the auction at any time. Incidentally, although he is advertising 25 units, he hopes to sell significantly more.

I have a small amount of steel (about 30 lbs.) that I'd hate to simply throw away. It's only worth a few dollars so I doubt I'd find a scrap dealer who could be bothered. Is there anyplace to take steel for recycling? What would happen if I just put it in the metal/glass/plastic recycling bin in my building?
