I'll take the word from the American professionals on the ground who stated it was a coordinated terrorist attack rather than the word of Libyan terrorists who may have an agenda that the NYTimes want to believe.

The NYTimes is no better now than MSNBC nowadays.

Women changing their minds to disapproving of Obama is directly tied to the roll out of Obamacare, and it will likely get worse as the people who have their insurance from their jobs skyrocket in cost, or get thrown into the exchanges because their companies drop it altogether.

Corrado's has a nice variety of stock but you have to check the expiration dates on their perishable items though. I wish they would get an Italian bread supplier for thier daily fresh bread section. Their fruits and vegetables are pretty good and reasonably priced.

I always do; they had really cheap blackberries this week, but every container I viewed had the white fuzzy mold growing inside.

I agree, I wouldn't go out to a restaurant on NYE. You get indifferent food and service, and have to deal with the people who get drunk twice a year, the other day being St. Patrick's. And you have to worry about over indulged drivers.

It's a pretty insular view. It's a little disingenuous to bar immigrants from working and contributing, then argue their kids shouldn't be educated in the US because their parents don't contribute.

Alternatively the Americas could extend NAFTA to include EU-style freedom of movement/flexible labor agreements. Jobs are already moving out of the US at an alarming rate. Moving the borders to Canada and Mexico would likely save more in border patrol costs alone, than what is spent educating immigrants. Not to mention the extra billions of revenue generated from the immigrants.

And that way US parents could send their kids to Canada to get a decent education.

Let's see Mexico open their borders first to Americans and see how that works out. Have you seen how they treat illegal aliens themselves? We need secure borders now, given the threat of another 9/11, not ones more porous.

What are your New Year's Eve traditions?
Home away from home
Home away from home

We're heading to the shore house where we'll meet up with my best friend since 2nd grade and his wife-I don't think I've missed a New Year's Eve with them in 25 years. We're bringing down appetizers-making phyllo cups with a cheesy sausage filling, I had Andrea Salumeria slice up a hot and a sweet sopressatta, and I'm picking up a Sicilian pizza from Santillo's in Elizabeth to cut into small squares. My friend is bringing a standing rib roast and sides. Another friend is doing salad and desserts. They supply the wine for dinner, I'm bringing triple ginger beer, Patron, and limes to make cocktails.

Breakfast will be a French toast strata, sectioned citrus, and Bloody Mary's with pickled asparagus spears I've put up. We traditionally phone some of our friends who live in different parts of the country and pass the phone around sometime before midnight. After breakfast we take a walk on the boardwalk-it'll be a much happier walk this year than last . . .

What do you do?

The "spending per student" includes immigrants, so the spending itself is still high, so dilution probably isn't the issue. As far as welfare goes, there might be something to that, but it's tough to imagine other countries don't have the same issue.

From reading various sources, it seems that money is being wasted on items not directed at improving education. Smaller class sizes doesn't seem to corrrelate to education improvements. The US has an extremely high spending on non-education items like Sports. The US does invest in early childhood education, but that program doesn't seem to reaped dividends as it has in other countries.

I think some of the things that are broken are:
- Little fiscal accountability. The billions of dollars of spend is managed by locally elected moms and pops. Local government isn't the right way to run a multi-billion dollar industry.
- No competition for teaching jobs. It seems there is little initial and ongoing standardized teacher training and assessment, performance incentives, career development, etc. The teaching industry seems geared to attract and retain the worst. Paying teachers more, but removing obstacles such as tenure might be the way to go.
- Misdirected parental participation - according to authors such as Amanda Ripley, parents in the US engage as much other countries in ed-related activities, but it's not directed to helping the kids learn. Cheering the school team at the weekend doesn't help the kid count.
- Bar is set too low. Lessons, homework, tests don't challenge the students to think critically, and are more designed to "learn-by-rote".

The focus should be on education and the educators, and not the excuses. Standardized student testing and more competition and choice provided by charter schools are steps in the right direction.

Great post. It's amazing a lot of people in this country whine about healthcare (which is valid) while at the same time deny that US education is in bad shape overall and find all kinds of excuses, like xenophobias blaming everything on immigrants.

dtjcview, while I don't know the number of children of illegal immigrants who are attending JC schools, I'd guess that it's at least 5%. Do you think, say, our impoverished black children would benefit from class sizes 5% smaller? Or perhaps the high cost of remedial education/ESA/school breakfasts and lunches spent on that 5% could be used for our own kids?

You make great points about the waste, though.

No, he has a 'real national audience', of course. It's safe to include Lettermen in national media, as you would Hannity and/or Rachel Maddow. Neither Maddow, Hannity, or Letterman are 'newsmen' but they are strong voices in media (not that many tune in to Maddow).

Besides, I never said that the national press went after Palin's kids, only the liberal national media.

Seems to me the difference is probably made up in social programs that help alleviate poverty and income instability. When a child's home-life is full of violence, income instability and stress it doesn't matter what you spend on educating them.

I would also imagine that a lot of money is being spent educating children of illegal aliens (since NJ won't check legal status of students) and that it obviously costs more to educate those children who probably live in non-English speaking households. And that $ dilutes the amount of resources available for the children of parents who are here legally or are citizens.

I would imagine it's much more expensive and difficult to educate diverse student populations than ones that are not. We can't, for instance, compare Finland with the USA. Isn't JC the most diverse city in NJ? How many different countries are represented among the students? How many different cultures? Languages spoken at home? Religions?

If the answer is more security in schools it's an easy fix. It's much harder to get parents to help kids with homework at home, make sure they complete their assignments, and attend parent/teacher conferences.

How can we analyze anything when, from the get go, Obama and Clinton have done everything to cloud what the public has a right to know? While we know where Obama and Clinton were when Bin Laden got whacked (pictures and all) we don't have timeline for their responses during the terror attack on 9/11, on their watch. It did last, what, 12 hours or so . . .

Gee, wonder why? At least we know it wasn't because of a video, although Susan Rice was sent to spout that on, what, 5 or 6 TV shows right afterwards?

At least you didn't say 'Fox News' or 'Rush' or 'Hannity' talking points however!

Pebble, be honest-why do you think Congress hasn't been able to identify, let alone interview, dozens and dozens of US citizens who were attacked in Benghazi?

Why did Clinton and her staff continually push the video as the reason for the attack?

Why haven't we seen medical reports of how her mysterious 'concussion' happened when she was supposed to testify? Where was she? Why the news blackout? Why the secrecy?

It's silly, of course, that it's court mandated by an activist NJ State Supreme Court, but has proven to be almost worthless in its results.

I'll repeat; 2.5 billion dollars spent just in one year on just these ten schools with such poor graduation rates. It's not the state's fault, the taxpayers either-because no amount of money will improve these numbers. I'm not going to research how much more money went towards the 21 other Abbott schools, or how many billions and billions have been wasted since 1985 when this became a court ordered mandate but the number surely is staggering.

No, activist judges who disregard the laws and make new ones themselves-like allowing the Democrats to replace Torricelli in his Senate race with 35 days before the election, when state law says it can only be done 51 days before. (Which was when the polls showed he was going to lose because of his ethics violations).
