Re: New tax break for Hyatt Hotel

Secaucus is not on the waterfront and guess what, the town is full of hotels without long term abatements.

Do you realize JC was worth more in 1988 after the reval? The city went up from $800 million to around $6.5 or $6.7 billion. Tax appeals reduced the city value but abatement properties are not added to the ratable base, so today, the county tax assessor take $5.8 billion to give our tax bill. What keep the assessment artificially low are the tax abatements that are handed out. At one point, in the early 1990s the ratable base was as low as $5.1 billion but luckily some abatements have expired. Abatements means the average Joe or Jill is paying high taxes because someone is getting a deal. Even Fulop announced to the city council during the budget process, some abatements have expired (Tower of America is one) and taxes will drop because the ratable base increase. I checked the county tax assessor and he agreed with Fulop's numbers.

Re: California Teacher Tenure Laws Ruled Unconstitutional

It is also subjective on who is incompetent. When my second grader attended school, I thought he did not have enough homework. It was done in ten minutes or less. As I waited in line during report card night, parents aheaded of me, complained to the teacher, their child had too much homework. When it was my turn to speak, I felt silly complaining about the lack of homework, so I told the teacher he enjoyed her class, which was true. I later found he was doing the homework as he was copying the assignments off the board.

In the early 1970s, I did my student teaching in a North Hudson High school, all the talk in the teacher's lounge was about who supported what candidate and who will be in favor. As I stated earlier, tenure protects teachers who supported losing candidates. We will eventually spending taxpayers dollars on lawsuits if tenure is done away.

The saying is "All politics are local," with that saying in mind, tenure protected teachers who supported the losing candidate.

I will not mention the address, but a person in the Van Vorst area took out permits and the city raise their assessment 80% with a hefty tax increase. But yea, they are only the "little folks."

A month ago, 165 Bay Street only got a 5 year abatement, not 20 years, if they were smart they should have used DeCotiis.

It is also another political deal, Decotiis is the law firm representing the developer and DeCotiis is the firm that just received the $350m contract with the MUA, and just recently, a contract with the County.
The DeCotiis Law Firm The powerful family firm was in the backrooms in Fulop's corner throughout the contest ....

I was around in the 1980s when Colgate decided to close its factory because they said their land was worth more. The Colgate Redevelopment plan was formed. The developers did not ask for an abatement, the idea came from Mayor Cucci who offer them an abatement because JC needed $20 million for the public school according to the state, then Mayor McCann came into office and reduced the terms. Colgate Redevelopment developers never asked for the abatement, it was government.

What does hate has to do with facts? I saw Councilman Fulop attack Mayor Healy for the same thing. I give no one a pass on giving out abatements, especially waterfront abatements.

Councilman Fulop used to attack Healy for "giving away the city," now he is doing the same. 1 Exchange Place will have a 20 year tax abatement.http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... .html#incart_river_hudson

My friend who owned a home in Hoboken but sold last year finally responded. His home, a row house was went from $262,600 to $878,500. The taxes pre-reval was $13,000 and after $12,000.

I found out from a neighbor that a pregnant woman was murdered by her former boyfriend at 135 Montgomery St. about 4 years ago, but it never made the papers. The unborn child did survive.

I would prefer they listen to the words of the mayor who should have honored them for their service, this was a special anniversary. I am glad Bayonne did honor the veterans for their service.

According to the county, Hoboken revaluation started this year. I have not seen any letters to the editor on unfair assessment. Has anyone heard anything?

It is also not a holiday when we honor the Puerto Rican parade, Irish parade, and the list can go on and on. Our politicians march in those parades. JC had a unique history with the plaque for ?Old Glory.?

If a small town like Bayonne can have flags line the street in honor of veterans, why not JC. I saw a tattered flag in Journal Square which always fly there in pathetic shape. JC dropped the ball on this one. We honor ever ethnic group but we are silent on holidays that honors our country. Not every town had a monument that stated "Old Glory," but we did. This is the 70th anniversary. I doubt any veterans will be alive for the 80th.

Re: Star Ledger: Greedy NJ Unions Responsible for Pension Mess

There are lots of things I do not agree with such as a public figure collecting two paychecks, but if a public employee has his/her pay deducted for pension then the state should not use the money to balance the budget. When Whitman started this she wanted to keep her campaign promise to give tax cuts and it was on the backs of public employees. If I had a private practice and used my client?s money the same way, I would be indicted and put in jail. I think public employees have a legitimate complaint. Recently, our state passed ?dreamers? which give in state tuition. The price tag for in state tuition was not discussed. So in order to make dreamers have their dreams, it will come somewhere in our budget. We need a price tag for everything that is passed.

Veterans
Home away from home
Home away from home

Today is the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. Jersey City lost people to that invasion including former Mayor Cucci who lost a brother. Between World War 1 and 2 Jersey City residents have served and some have lost their lives. Mercer Street at one time had a plaque that said "Old Glory," due to the large number of people, basically immigrants who served and died in the wars. Lining the streets, I saw the flags flying proudly on Avenue C in Bayonne. Sadly, JC is doing nothing to honor those veterans.

I went to North Hudson: Union City, North Bergen, West New York and it dawn on me I didn't see graffiti on buildings. What are these towns doing that Jersey City is not? Graffiti is growing like a cancer on JC properties.

There are some municipalities in Hudson County that have a few thousand citizens. Even Secaucus only has 15,000 residents. I think it is will work the other way.

Many small towns in NJ has a dollar a year mayor and pay .10 to municipal government. It is county government that does the heavy lifting.

The freeholders vote on the county budget. It controls prison, welfare, 911, courts, some roads, a college, and some parks. Many people have expressed a belief of getting rid of county government. I believe we should get rid of municipal government and just have county government. The population of the county is around 600,000. We are paying for too many levels of government.

Yes, I feel sorry for you. You use a phony name to throw sleaze because you lack the courage to use your real name when you attack someone. You also do not understand the difference between an issue and a person. Attacking an issue is different from attacking a person. I do feel sorry for someone that lacks that courage.
