I don't speak for them and have no idea how they would respond, but have you checked with the organization that runs Camp Liberty? I don't know if or what they use the space for on weekends.

Couldn't resist looking this up. American Lawn Mower Co. makes a push mower sharpening kit. You can get it on Amazon for about 15 bucks.

What about Downtown Hardware on Newark Ave? They're pretty old school and might do something like sharpen blades. Not sure but it's worth an ask...

I found this funny since our water company is actually now called "Suez." United Water wasn't catchy enough. Really want to drink water named after a brackish canal in the Mediterranean?

I myself have been at the beginning of that slope that leads to Yonkers, or outer Brooklyn, when people move to NYC and then realize they can't afford the lifestyle they thought they were getting. Then I looked left over the river into the sunset and saw a gleaming blue banner that said "if you lived here you'd be home by now." Moved into the James Madison, then on to some other places downtown I like a lot better, and I've never once looked back.

Want to get into the city to party? That's why they built the PATH.

I agree the guy's a douche. I think the people we would actually want as our neighbors will see through his douchery and see our town for what it really is.

Good riddance Dr. Douche.

Re: New to Greenville... Eating out.

Laico's is a great place. My wife introduced me to it years ago and we've been going occasionally ever since. Try the pork medallions with cherry peppers.

One hint - Make sure you get extremely detailed directions for getting there. It's like Brigadoon, it appears out of the mist and then it's gone again.

The street it's on (Terhune) is one-way and does not extend all the way between JFK and West Side. You need to ask for directions or look closely at the map or nav system. Don't try driving around trying to find it.

Also, it's camouflaged among houses on a residential street.

Unfortunately, if you want to buy in 07302 nowadays you need to have more like $100k in cash, ready to plunk down on the barrelhead. Otherwise, unless you qualify for FHA, etc, you will not get a loan. It's how the market works now.

I just vacated a 2BR in Hamilton Park that was renting for $1800. On the fringe and in an older building, I will admit. I would look in Hamilton Park before JSQ, BL or Greenville, with all due respect to residents of those nabes. I would also prefer HP over Van Vorst or Grove (which I think is really part of Harsimus Cove.)

When my wife lived up on the Blvd near Journal Square she had a barbeque grill stolen from her back yard. In broad daylight. With the charcoals lit and glowing hot. With the chicken already on it. Talk about take-out!

Re: New floor in basement - recommendations?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Don't put any type of absorbent flooring material in the basement - wood, carpet, whatever, even if it is supposed to resist moisture. I would suggest staining, epoxy sealing and polishing the concrete slab itself. They can stain concrete almost any color. You can also have the concrete surface ground down to reveal some of the stone aggregate in it, which gives it a look like terrazzo flooring. Not sure how that is done exactly and it probably adds a lot to the cost.

If your slab is not pretty enough for company, consider installing slate or some other kind of stone tile. They can make the floor perfectly level with leveling cement and you will have a nice, moisture proof, floor.

Before you do anything, test for moisture. Tape a 2' x 2' sheet of plastic to the concrete floor and leave it alone for a couple of weeks - through different tides, periods of rain, etc. Lift it off and look for condensation or moisture on the underside. If you have any you should have a waterproofing specialist look at the situation and remedy that first before you make it too late by installing a floor.

I would rather have the police officers paid to watch drunkards in Hoboken, than paid to watch holes on Columbus Drive. At least that way they might stop someone from driving drunk, into Jersey City. Even better if Hoboken pays the JCPD at time-and-a-half.

A/C Duct Cleaning - recommendations
Home away from home
Home away from home

In the process of buying a house with central air and forced-air heat. Before move-in I want to have the ducts cleand and a cap put on the furnace chimney (has no cap on it now).

Any recommendations for a good local contractor? I would rather go local owner-operated than hire a large national franchise.

The lot accessible from Newark or Bay is public, metered parking. I think there are also evening hours when you don't need to feed the meters (double check first!)

Here's a link to a PDF on FEMA's website that explains the mandatory flood insurance purchase rules, including for change of loan servicer. Not sure if it answers the specific concerns here, but it's pretty informative overall:

(Never heard one word from our company of course, we had to call to tell THEM)

Can you tell me where you found updated FEMA FIRM maps? The map on the FEMA website for my part of downtown (Map # 34017C0106D) was issued in August of 2006. The property in question is literally on the flood zone line, so I would really like to know if there's an updated map out there somewhere.

Heck, I'd settle for a D'agostino or Fairway. They seem to be able to operate without parking. We already have Shoprite, PathMark and A&P for bulk weekly/bi-weekly staple stuff.

There's a nice little location at 3rd and Jersey - presently occupied of course.

304 Pavonia Ave. It's still listed on Del Forno's website and is not marked sold, so I don't imagine there are firm plans yet. They are marketing it as having multiple potential uses:

Currently zoned as a church.
Other uses that may be considered:
-Residential Mansions
-Religious Center
-Photography Studio
-Educational Center
-Yoga/Sports Studio
-Art Studio/Gallery
-Office
-Day Care Center
-Dance School
-Library

Anyone know the specifics on this part of the 1010 WINS piece? I would have thought Christie was in favor of, or at least neutral on, the pipeline issue. Doesn't affect anyone in the part of Jersey he really cares about. Plus, to be considered for national office eventually as a republican you cannot antagonize Oil & Gas.

I also have surplus sandbags - about 20 or so, let's say 800-900 lbs of sand. No idea what to do with them but I would be happy to drive them to the park if they need sand. They did us no good during the storm so I don't need to keep them around.

We had sewer back-up and flooded basements in Hamilton Park as well. The Coles St. underpass under the viaduct by Moishe's had a huge puddle in it, complete with a stalled car. I think it was "just" rain. Didn't hear of any water main breaks.

Re: Carpet Cleaners

Thanks for the post. I was having a hard time finding anything other than the big internet-based rug cleaners. Just dropped off a rug at Duffy's. FYI, if you're willing to drive to Bogota, in Bergen Co., you get a big discount for dropping off your own rugs - 20%. If you have enough rugs it's worth it.

I'll re-post when I get my rug back about quality, but the price was 1/2 to 1/3 of what I found elsewhere. $56 including tax for a 3 x 10 oriental runner.
