Might suggest you being a little more specific about the "issue". Is it electrical supply service or the a/c unit itself? Different trades. Can't help if we don't know-

Couldn't disagree more but if you think so then you're about the only person who does. Nobody stops for the crosswalk (unless MAYBE if you're pushing a baby stroller) and the signs are getting destroyed by every large truck that needs to go wide to make a turn onto a narrow cross street. The speed bumps were originally so tall that only a SUV could clear them and the new stop signs didn't even get the lines painted across the intersections until a couple of months after the signs went up. Ms Osborne had good intentions but it was a terrible execution...

Brewster has exactly the right suggestion if you're willing to DIY. Your Mac can read both Fat32 and NTFS drives from Windows PCs.

But if you want professional help I'd be happy to help. I run my own business doing IT Support for small/medium businesses. I'm also in the VVP area and already have the drive adapters. Tons of local references-

You mean the way it has declared that you must stop at STOP signs, yield to pedestrians and go no faster than 25 mph? If they can't get compliance on these, how do you think they can possibly enforce such a vague decree? Passports to enter certain streets? I thought you weren't in favor of a police state.

Exactly. And at least half of the traffic Downtown (it seems) is "Through Traffic". With the Pulaski Skyway closed the Turnpike exit traffic is nuts and Jersey Ave. is a parking lot most of the day. I see it backed up from Grand St. to Newark starting about 8:00 a.m. every weekday. It's faster to walk than take one of my old mopeds...

Just came home from a client this evening and a cop in a marked car didn't even yield to me in a marked crosswalk. And not only that, no seatbelt and busy texting on his phone while driving. WTF?...

Re: Driving down Jersey in Hamilton Park

The worst is when large trucks park near the corners and completely block the view of the stop sign. It's every day around here and Parking Authority does absolutely nothing about it.

Jersey Ave. will never be a one-way street, and as for traffic speeding just wait until that stupid bridge opens down at the south end by the Morris Canal and there will be THOUSANDS of cars coming off the turnpike every day and creating a traffic jam on Jersey Ave that will reduce driving speed to slower than walking.

Re: Advice on fireplace
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm with MDM on this one, as usual...

I've got two chimneys in my house, front and rear, and each has 5 flues (5 stories above the basement). So there was "front heat" and "rear heat" supplied by coal burners at the lowest level and the flues were used to distribute the heat to the upper floors front/rear. I completely sealed 8 of my 10 flues and use only two of them.

Out of 6 fireplaces with mantles I've only exposed the brick on one of them floor to ceiling and it looks great but it's a messy job.

A word of caution about opening up the fireplaces: If you don't have the flue capped at either the bottom of the flue (meaning in your fireplace) or at the top of the chimney then you have a HUGE hot air leak during the winter when your home heat is on. And those old brick flues have a ton of leaks in them so you should never EVER run your boiler vent into one of them without a proper aluminum (for gas) or stainless steel (for oil) chimney liner. Serious safety issue...

I've used Byron twice. His price seemed a little high on one job and he left a big mess. He's also got an ego bigger than the State of NJ, and I didn't really need or want the attitude (I'm a highly-mechanical guy but the job was a little too big for me to handle by myself or I would have). He brought the wrong part after I SPECIFICALLY told him what was needed so he had to run back to Bayonne to his supplier. Meaning a 1 hour job took 3 hours.

I've used Charles Mello several times in the past. Nice old guy, old school, and knows his stuff. Also reasonable on the price.

jcgurl, We have an active email thread among neighbors in the area and the question about WHY so many streets are being closed at once (for work that moves at a snail's pace) and our concerns about sidewalks and foundation drilling was widely distributed late yesterday. About every city official and heads of various agencies involved with this were copied. We saw all the No Parking signs everywhere (posted less than 24 hours in advance and marked as "Emergency" even though it clearly wasn't). Here's the only response I've had so far, and it's about as useful as a screen door on a submarine!

Interesting... Is it because they can see the popping of the bubble coming soon?

Do you know what kind of prices they're asking?

I have no idea what their motivation to sell is, but given that they just purchased the two buildings by me for a bit less than $1.5M each would suggest that they aren't seeing this as the top of the market and ready to pop.

I also have no idea whether these are "quick-flip" sales or properties that they've had for a few years, nor what the asking prices are.

They're an investment firm, plain and simple. The work looks great but I've seen it and it's medium-quality IMO.

It ought to look great - the rent is $8995/month! Sheesh!

They now own 5 houses on my block including 2 recent purchases across the street from me. They come in with all-cash offers and no contingencies, so they basically win on most bidding wars.

Their contractors are incredibly obnoxious with power tools sometimes starting around 7:30 a.m. and they block off parking spaces like they own the street.

And they're rentals. We've had some great renter neighbors but most of them don't seem to have the least bit of interest in getting to know their neighbors. Too bad, their loss. But it changes the vibe of the block when it changes from owners to renters...

The word I have from 2 different Real Estate agents is that they're starting to sell some of their improved properties. Interesting...

Was thinking the same thing. They'll spend $10k for a study that has pretty much zero impact on any resident but they won't even do a traffic study on the moronic plan by the Turnpike Authority to build a bridge over the Morris Canal and route Turnpike traffic right through the middle of DTJC. The "guesstimated" 5,000 vehicles per day, locked in a traffic jam of epic proportions, is gonna do wonders for our "carbon footprint". Maybe we should take up a collection to buy Steve a cow or a tree?

Re: Roads torn up near VVP

PSE&G will be milling paving once the work is done, but those trenches down the street are only the beginning. Once all of the main high pressure lines are installed they will be digging perpendicular trenches from the street into every building - as in digging up the sidewalk and right through your stoop area to the foundation wall, which they will then drill through TWICE. Once for the gas line intake (on the high-pressure line it's 15 PSI, vs. 0.05 PSI for the old low-pressure line) and the second for a pressure relief hose leading from the gas regulator back to the outside in front of the house in case the regulator fails.

My foundation is about 13" of stone and brick and my bluestones in front are going to be trashed.

The "temporary" trench paving is being done incredibly poorly and they are leaving a huge mess of loose gravel and asphalt.

And if nobody else noticed, it seems that a lot of the trenching goes right down the middle of the recently-painted bikes lanes, making them seriously undesirable for bikers. As usual, brilliant planning all around...

The bridge puts large traffic volumes exiting the Turnpike on a collision course with the poorly aligned HBLR Jersey Ave grade level-crossing. Any benefit to a few cars will be more than offset by a negative impact to thousands of HBLR riders from accidents and delays. Looks as though there wasn't much (any) coordinated planning to me....

As I recall, the decision to have a grade-level crossing of the southern end of Jersey Avenue was because HBLR had some assurances (I don't recall exactly from whom) that Jersey Ave would remain a dead end. But I agree the traffic will always follow the path of least resistance and right now everything is clogged. Jersey Ave. is a parking lot from Grand to Newark every day at rush hours already. So we're going from bad to worse here in Downtown.

The whole thing smells of a sellout. The fact that neither the mayor nor any council members attended this meeting despite it having a significant (negative) impact on the quality of life for tens of thousands of residents is pretty amazing. I wish it were an election year

Exactly. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla (and a whole lot more). DTJC wasn't exactly a picnic 30 years ago - cars stolen, houses broken into, needles all over the parks, bikes that wouldn't last 30 minutes parked on the street and even gunshots in the night. Home prices were cheap but enough people had the vision and determination to buy here and stay here and VOTE here and make it better and now it's priced at a premium.

Neighborhoods will always change. It's just a matter of time but nobody has the miracle crystal ball. 30 years ago a real estate agent was trying to convince me to buy in the Heights (JSQ was WAAY worse than it is now), saying it was the next great place that was "happening". Re: Fence Permit?

Not that I'm aware of. I've done it 3 times with my houses in DTJC. The rules do require that if you put up the fence then the better-looking side of it needs to face your neighbor's property. Talk your neighbors in advance to be sure there's no dispute about who owns the old fence you want to tear down. As the old saying goes:

Don't know about the high-vis markings, but I ride (bicycles and old mopeds) with a "see and be seen" attitude so I don't have any problem with the markings...
The rubber coating notion sounds good but I kinda doubt it would last more than a year or two out in the sun.
The front of my house still has an old Horse Ring strongly secured to the curbstone. Been there since the mid-1800s. Just think of how many of those and a simple 4' galvanized pipe next to it for bike leaning could be installed city-wide for $40k!

I'll add another + for Poltmax. I needed a major structural beam installed to replace what had been a load-bearing wall. Rafal and Ziggy were SUPER. At one point I had 15 jacks (both screw type and hydraulic) on various floors of my house to hold up an estimated 70 tons of weight. Those guys were both careful and precise. I gave them keys to my house for the duration of the job, which took several weeks since the jacks had to be raised only a fraction of an inch per day in order to avoid cracking plaster on the upper floors. Considering the amount of time and equipment involved I thought their price was very fair.

Candice,

Thank you for your thoughtful responses. There is a point which I don't think you addressed and further clarification would be helpful.

I have heard that the food trucks' banning from the Grove Street Plaza extends beyond the SID and Farmers Market and is enforced by the City. Specifically, at least one food truck owner was either issued a $2,000 ticket or threatened with one for setting up shop in the Grove St Plaza during a random weekday evening.

Since I haven't seen any trucks there during the past several months this unfortunate news made sense. I figured the City's action was directly linked with the lobbying efforts of Two Boots and the like.

My interest is clear: I like the choices and prices the food trucks provide. Further, these truck owners are nice people who work hard. If there is a good reason for the City to ban them from the Plaza such as food safety concerns or if they are actually putting local restaurants out of business, that makes this news more palatable.

But that doesn't seem to be the case. The DTJC restaurant scene is exploding.

So without a good reason for the banning, the status quo seems to me to be crony capitalism, where a handful of local restaurants, a special interest, successfully employed the Government to stifle competition, enrich their personal profits, and take away choices from the consumer. Not exactly an uncommon occurrence in this country. That probably contributes to why so many people are upset.

Like you say, I'm sure the food trucks would want to pay a tax in the form of parking so they can set up shop at the Plaza instead of being issued (or threatened with) $2,000 tickets. But their banning is a recent occurrence. Shouldn't they be allowed to continue what they were doing until the City can come up with an acceptable arrangement? The recent change has the listed restaurant owners' fingerprints all over it, and the whole situation is very unfortunate.

So you nailed why it is important for us to clean up the food truck regulation. Markets can have food trucks, farmers markets can have food trucks (though less due to the limit on prepared foods.) It is really the day to day regulation that is a mess. Reasons why current legislation is a mess:

1 - Language in current legislation is unclear. Food trucks must be x feet away from nearest brick and mortar restaurant (I think 300.) Is that radius or walking distance? Police don't feel like there is a clear answer there.

2 - Legislation doesn't solve the problem of where food trucks CAN park in a way that at all helps the entreprenuers who start them. Food truck operators feel like they never know when/where they will get a ticket and they have to move the food truck every 2 hours.

3 - Legislation doesn't solve the problem of the fact that the food truck operators are getting a free ride by way of using city land (parking space) for commercial purpose without paying the equivalent of a rent for that space. Brick and mortar feel like they are operating on an un-level playing field as they have to pay rents which roll up to include both land use as well as property tax and the food truck operators do not.

So, the current legislation works for basically ZERO of the stakeholders and that's why things like this happen. We need to as a city determine: where exactly we want to allow food trucks and come up with a way to charge for the commercial use of public space. This shouldn't be hard, we just need to do it.[/quote]

Just as I said earlier today; there are NO winners here as it stands now. So how do we get it done Candice? Is it City Government or SID that writes the rules? Or is it a little of both? Would be nice to hear from an SID representative-

Should they fail and close, I will not mourn their passing, and hope that whoever takes their place has a more reasoned approach to how businesses can coexist and improve an area.

For example the countless other eateries in the area that did not sign this petition. They make perfectly tasty food and serve a decent beer/drink. The places that don't negatively affect me can have the dollars.

Oh +1 on this.

Candice, Thanks for your input, as always. I'm also curious if you can answer that question posed by caj11 in post 227?

The sad part about this is that there are no winners. The food trucks lose a business opportunity (and perhaps a major financial investment), the local residents lose the OPTION of eating at a food truck and the Restaurants who actually believed that food trucks were cutting into their business and agreed to sign on to this attack now have hundreds of people who will boycott them and tell their friends. I thought it meant two different types of treatment; one for storm runoff, which was mostly filtering off the trash, and the other messy one for sludge removal (being polite here) and chlorine treatment before release of liquid. The combined system can't handle it all.

Re: DEP finally acting on aging sewerage systems

In addition to being incredibly expensive, it will require digging up every street in the city. It's currently a combined system, meaning all household waste AND all street runoff all get mixed in a single pipe. It completely overwhelms the system when we get heavy rain, and many pipes are in poor condition to begin with. So, dig up all the streets and storm drains and replace one old pipe with TWO new ones (sewer and storm runoff). This was under discussion when I moved here 28 years ago...
