Re: Do I have a shot at fighting this parking ticket?

One of the benefits of academia is I am on winter break during both court dates so I can happily plant myself at the courthouse and work on lesson plans while I wait. Thinking it's worth a shot, no real loss if I lose.

Do I have a shot at fighting this parking ticket?

This is kind of a weird situation legality wise so I'm hoping for some input.

There is a "No parking any time" sign near my block that is not enforced. Instead, it is treated as a "No parking from here to corner" sign. So, if you park on the side of the sign close to the corner, you might get a ticket (i.e. it's happened to me twice in 5 months). If you park on the side of the sign further from the corner you don't seem to get ticketed.

I parked on the "wrong" side of the sign and got a ticket for "no stopping or standing" (I'll call this Ticket #1). OK fine. But that wasn't the only ticket on my car - there was also one for "No stopping or standing, certain hours on designated street" (Ticket #2).

Ticket #2 is incorrect re: the "certain hours on designated street." The ticket was issued on a Friday and parking is only restricted on that side of the street on Mondays and Thursdays. I have a current zone parking permit that allows me to park for more than 2 hours so that isn't it either. That leaves the "no stopping or standing" portion of the ticket - but I was already ticketed for that at 7:35 AM. Ticket #2 is marked as 1:40 PM.

So what are my chances of fighting one or both of these tickets? Can they really "double dip" and ticket me twice in one day for the same offense? The two tickets were right next to each other on my windshield so it's not like the ticket #2 cop didn't see ticket #1.

Re: Homeless in Van Vorst Park

Does anyone have actual contact information for groups that do homeless outreach, shelters that have any sort of shuttle that does pickup, and the non emergency line for police? That seems to be what was requested...not a bunch of politicized rants.

And for the poster who mentioned all the homeless in Boston - I was a soup kitchen volunteer in Boston for several years. I worked with Project Bread which is one of if not the biggest soup kitchens in the city. Part of why there are so many homeless, paradoxically, is that there are so many services in that area. Many of them are not stable enough to make it into a long term shelter or housing situation (shelters obviously prohibit drug/alcohol abuse) but get by begging for change and eating at the soup kitchens.

As for the ACLU and individual rights....I also worked in a public mental health hospital with patients who were involuntarily committed, mostly schizophrenic. It is a really complicated issue because the side effects of successful medication treatment can be severe, including Tourette's-like involuntary twitching (google 'tardive dyskenesia'). Even with access to treatment many patients are non compliant as soon as they have a choice. I still haven't made up my mind about whether it is "better" to forcibly medicate a non violent schizophrenic, or "better" to let them be homeless and often addicted and hope their erratic behavior never escalates.

Re: Car missing (stolen/towed)???

I have to move my car three times a week because of street cleaning. My fiance and I trade off who moves it when. We have both completely panicked a few times when one of us moved the car and didn't mention it to the other and and we thought it was stolen. Now we have figured out to always, always tell each other if we moved it. Ah, city life...

I've heard that some in favor of the weekly Friday night events have attempted to 'open a dialogue' with those that aren't so keen on the activities. But that isn't apparent in this thread. Banish me to the suburbs, call me unsympathetic to those throwing-up their creative expressions, but I really wonder: is this the best you can do? (Prizes to whomever challenges me to do better first.)

I believe the dialogue has mostly been through the circulating of the "Save JC Music" petition as well as encouraging people to attend city council meetings. If you have suggestions for this event specifically, the woman to talk to is Uta Brauser - she is hard to miss, look for the woman with pink hair usually wearing giant platform boots.

Out of curiosity, what do you think could be done better? What about groove on grove seems "more organized" to you than creative grove? I know CG has more vendors (so the tent layout is a bit more crowded) and the aforementioned "shabby furniture" but otherwise I don't see a huge difference in how well the events are run.

Why is the city subsidizing house purchases for the people who can't afford to buy a house? Isn't this exactly what led to the mortgage crisis in the first place?

My hunch is that the economic impact of vacant properties is a more pressing issue for the city than the economic impact of eventual foreclosures. It is something of a band aid that may help some and hurt others. For someone living just above paycheck to paycheck, who has been doing so in a stable manner for a while, if they can maintain or improve their financial outlook for the 10 year period they will do better owning a home through this program than renting (ceteris parabus of course). And that's a big if.

I know there have been issues with developers buying up properties and then sitting on them until the market improves, and the vacancies are dragging the neighborhood down in the meantime, and maybe that's what this plan is meant to address. Stabilize the housing market, if only temporarily.

This program is ideal for people who have some financial assets (savings, etc.) but are underemployed currently. The type of people who have education or experience that will eventually get them a job at the high end of the ranges specified or above them. Someone who gets 25K in disability a year...not so much. You need to be able to afford home maintenance and that's often what sinks home owners.

Re: Ferris H.S. Brawl Brings Cops in the Mix

On the limited number of occasions when I'm out and about in downtown during lunch, I have to say I'm pretty surprised they let these kids out for lunch. I drove through a horde of them today during lunch and several cars were going about 5 miles per hour down the street, because dozens of Ferris students were completely disregarding the traffic. One kid even yelled "go ahead, hit me" while walking AT my car, when I tried to slowly take a turn during a break in the crowd (I was going less than 5 mph and he could have more easily walked around the car). The students hang out on stoops of buildings that I know are not their homes, yell at the top of their lungs, and generally run pretty wild. I think the school environment would be safer and the neighborhood better off if they ate in a supervised cafeteria environment.

So, which one of the bolded is ridiculous and which one is out of control? I vote 'out of control' for hula hoops (someone could lose an eye) and 'ridiculous' that public use furniture is not pristine (diseases! bed bugs! oh my!).

"However, the Friday night 'art' thing seems a bit ridiculous and out of control."

First of all, why the dismissive quotes around art? Second, the vast majority of JC Fridays events are small, low key gallery shows, acoustic performances at cafes, etc. The music at Grove only runs until 9 or 10 which is incredibly reasonable for a Friday night. Maybe you should check out some "ridiculous" and "out of control" events yourself before writing them off, you might just have some fun, god forbid.

Most of the places on restaurant row that serve food will let you come in with underage people as long as they aren't drinking. This includes LITM and Bar Majestic which are more like restaurant/nightclub hybrids after 9 PM or so.

Re: Downtown: Having taken out huge second loan at height, couple now owes more than it's worth.

The author, in the comments on the article:

"I teach swimming and I have always found it interesting that when a person is truly afraid in the water their instincts will take over and make them do all the things that will actually lead toward drowning. I look back at the choices we made and I have to think that this is precisely what happened to us."

I hope Gabby realizes that the backlash has really improved her column - this one actually had useful content focusing on how to get out of a financial hole, rather than focusing on "Oh, this hole...how dark and damp it is, and I had to fire my maid, woe is me." There was a lot of self flagellation in past columns but then the next column would be about making the same set of mistakes. Hopefully Gabby can learn to not only be a better columnist because of this, but also to maybe learn to "fake it till she makes it" regarding being financially responsible. I do think the helpless persona in the columns reflected some counterproductive attitudes and actions on her part, and so maybe the more assertive tone will be reflected in her "real life" as well. One can only hope.

Eating liberally has it right - be on craigslist every single day and if a place sounds good, go see it within 48 hours or it will probably be gone. From my experience dealing with that price range, you will see about 10 shit holes and 1 or 2 good places - you'll obviously know which is which when you see them. You'll have to compromise on something - a place with laundry facilities will have less square footage and vice versa, that sort of thing - but as long as you're not coming from some sprawling loft space in brooklyn you'll probably find things to be comparable.

I've read her column. She doesn't mention the second loan but she does mention that her family has fallen behind on their taxes twice. I think she said that they spent a ton of money on renovations to their place and she looked the other way while her husband did it. She struggles with pulling her head out of the sand about money. This is also taken from her column on the independent, look it up.

I think it's sad that we have a culture of overspending that leads to this. That said as a young person starting out I've learned a lot from the excess I've seen crumble around me. I am very careful with my money and have built up a safety net since my first job. I plan on doing things very differently for myself and my family, including waiting to buy property until I can put down a sizeable down payment and only buying what I can afford.

Re: "up and coming" - I think it's pretty telling that most of the stuff posted in the "Crime and safety" forum has to do with crimes committed in the areas near those condos.

Killing over bike in lincoln park:

Muggings on west side avenue:

Gas station robbery near lincoln park:

If the area is going to turn around I would guess it will take 10-15 years minimum, so if you buy there as an investment think of it as pretty long term.

Re: Taqueria
Home away from home
Home away from home

This thread has been a very entertaining read!

I was totally naive to the Taqueria "controversy" when I first ate there. I went to HS in JC back when that space was some shady, foul smelling dive that gave you food poisoning if you came within 20 feet of it. When I saw Taqueria there it took a few walk-bys before I was convinced that it was definitely different ownership and not the suspicious establishment of my teenage years.

I went there with my fiance and we must have looked a bit confused (it was crowded and chaotic in the take out area as it always is) - a staff member beckoned us over and asked if it was our first time there.

He then patiently and cheerily explained how/where to order the food, the menu options, and offered us a list of recommendations from the staff. If anything the service was unusually friendly. The food was very tasty as well.

We've been back several times since. One time we were on line and this couple waltzed in and sat themselves at a four seater that was occupied by two people - obviously friends they were meeting. Everyone on line exchanged looks as by then we knew that Wasn't Done. Within 30 seconds they sheepishly joined us at the end of the line at the behest of a staff member. Some might take that as hostile or a bad policy but now that couple knows the rules and maybe next time, they'll be the ones glaring at some new customers committing a faux pas.

YET ANOTHER STORY: when I was a club promoter in a past life the issue of perceived "exclusivity" was one that was heartily debated. People love to complain about dress codes, cover charges, bouncer's attitudes, DJs who refuse off format requests, etc. ad. infinitum. I'm talking everything from $5 punk shows to VIP only club events. People just love to hate. If everyone loves you you're probably doing it wrong.

Bottom line: people vote with their dollars. Taqueria has been busy every time we've gone. 'Nuff said.
