Re: Astor Place Jersey City

Home away from home

I don't live on Astor, nor have I ever lived there, but I have travelled the area often (on my car and bike) and I will second JC_Livin's assertion about cars speeding down Astor. I am not sure why that is, either. Perhaps the relative seclusion ensures lack of police cruisers looking for speedsters (as if) but people definitely drive fast into and out of Astor Place. The corner of Astor and Summit is definitely one where to watch carefully for vehicular traffic.

Re: Pacquiao vs Marquez 4

Not what you would like to hear, but I have NEVER been able to find a bar in JC that shows the marquee fights, or even just the popular ones. I used to go to Hoboken, to East LA, where they used to show most major boxing matches. After one too many raucous, rowdy crowds, they stopped showing fights. That was about a year ago.

Now, I go into Manhattan, to a place called Legends, an awesome bar on 33rd St, between 5th and 6th Avenue. It is a SHORT walk from the PATH. The crowd, while lively, never gets out of control. They have a good selection of beers on tap, and the food is above average, for a bar.

Of course, with the PATH not running after 10 PM, this option is only viable if you can drive in.

I am not a religious man, at all, but I have attended services at OLC. It is a very welcoming community, and very young, as well. In fact, my first time there, I was struck by both of those things. It truly did feel like a very nice place.

I have checked out other Catholic churches downtown, and OLC is, by far, my best experience to date. The congregation seems vibrant and I felt "at home". But, again, I am not a religious person, so my opinion is solely based on the community/welcoming/inclusive aspects of the place and the way I felt while there.

Re: Jersey City Parking Authority

Actually, the OP is doing a lot more than questioning the reasonableness of the ticket.

His post shows an unwillingness to fully acknowledge fault by saying things like : "I guess", "technically", "not always easy to check signs". In short, the OP is pissed that he was booted for parking in the wrong zone. And, yes, that really sucks. But, his contention that checking street signs is not easy is almost laughable. That may be the case if you are in a hurry and don't want to bother doing so. Unless, of course, signs are missing, or defaced, or worn out. Like I said, in those cases a person should fight the ticket.

As others have pointed out, the responsibility for reading street parking signs, and complying with all rules, lays squarely with the driver. I understand we live hurried lives, but that doesn't absolve anyone of their responsibilities. Read the signs, heed the instructions, avoid the tickets.

And, if the signs were not clear, or missing, then do yourself (and, others) a favor and fight the ticket. Paying for invalid tickets only emboldens the JCPA to keep handing out bogus tickets.

I can't speak for Kraverie itself, but I do know that some restaurants choose to remain closed on Mondays for two reasons:
- to re-stock (hard, or impossible, to get delivery of all the necessary ingredients and/or supplies on Sundays)
- to allow owners/management/staff to rest after the weekend crush

Big, big thumbs up for PFA. I just had my Weimaraner neutered and it was a simple, satisfying experience. They are mostly about low-cost spay/neuter procedures, but they now do basic wellness services, as well. Even if you don't need to have a procedure done on your cat, or dog, you can help support PFA by buying your pet medications from them. Their pricing is good (below MSRP/list price) and by buying it from them, you are helping them provide their low-cost procedures. The staff is very, very sweet and helpful, and the vets (I have met two) are also very loving and caring towards the animals. If you have a car, the Hillside location is a 15-minute drive.

Indeed, the Grand Street Expressway. Several times over the past two weeks I have been honked at, and essentially shoved aside, by drivers hurrying East while I (legally) ride my bike on the street. What is there to do? If I am feeling adventurous, I will toss a few choice words their way and give them the stink eye, but there is little else I can do: in a head to head battle, the car will win EVERY DAY. Police presence is non existent and drivers feel pretty entitled to speed down the road and to drive aggressively while doing so.

Re: Surf City Restaurant & Megabar
Home away from home
Home away from home

Well, the Surf City bar is run by the same people behind the Beer Garden and their policy is posted right by the entrance: Dogs (20 lbs, or under) are welcome. Having said that, they will turn a blind eye to a dog that is above that weight limit based on your attitude, whether or not they know you, or recognize you, how crowded the place is, and how well-behaved your dog appears to be. To date, I have always been welcome with open arms, and they are REALLY welcoming to my guy. They usually bring him water and pet him and it has never been an issue. Then again, I have been bringing him along since he was a 9-week old puppy. He is now close to 30 pounds, and well over the limit, but I keep him curbed, and never let him roam or bother people. In short, my experience has been that if your dog is well behaved, they will welcome him. I have see all types of breeds, so no issues there. And, I have been there during happy hour time, and late evening hours, and no issues either. Heck, I showed up at the Surf City Bar around 11 PM and no one batted an eyelash about the fact that my dog was along for the fun.

Re: Surf City Restaurant & Megabar

I stopped in late Saturday night and thought the ambiance was just right. Lots of people, but not rowdy at all. Bouncers all over the place keeping an eye on things, and service was pretty good. I brought my dog with me and was made to feel very welcome. By the time I left, a few "chest thumping" types were starting to show up but things were still pretty chill. Definitely impressed with the place, and how it turned out, and I thought the vibe was great. I will be going back on a regular basis.

Also, about the person complaining about the beer prices, two things: if you happen to go during happy hour, their prices are much lower (which could explain the price difference) and if you were in doubt as to what you were being billed, you could have asked. There is no shame, or losing face, in asking for clarification of a bill. These are the same people that run the Zeppelin Beer Garden, which is why half the bartenders and bouncers were the same as over there. Over at the Zepp, beers are half off during happy hour, so I would think that something similar is true for Surf City.

Thank you for the quick response, Robin.

My guy is currently up to date in his shots, but he will be due for his next round of vaccination next week, so I thought I could go in and get it done this weekend. Also, and most importantly, thank you very much for clarifying the licensing requirements. I didn't realize the licensing was not due until they had reached 7 months of age.

Have a great day, and thank you for all work and effort. It is appreciated by many, even if we fail to express it at times.

Robin:

If the dog being vaccinated and registered is still a puppy (12 weeks) and, therefore, not yet neutered, which license fee would be due?? I fully plan to get him "fixed", but I don't know if my promise to do so is enough to qualify for the discounted fee applicable to neutered dogs. The difference is not much, so it is not really much of a concern, but I was wondering if there was a policy already defined for puppies.

Thanks!

Not sure where you heard, or read, that. FiOS is definitely expanding all over JC and the tri-state area. My building just got outfitted with FiOS recently and subscriber sign-ups took place over the weekend and on Monday.

I am scheduled to get my service installed and enabled this week.

I am SO happy to get rid of Comcast. I am paying through the nose for really sub par service. I will get immense pleasure when I call them to cancel, especially if they ask me why I am canceling the service.

A kid comes to US with parents illegally at 1 years old. Kid is educated and raised in US culture, does well in school.
17 years later at 18 years old kid discovers he/she is alien and is going to be deported to a culture/country never lived in does not identify with.
Send the kid back? What is gained? As a country we lost a productive person that was going to enter the workforce, buy things, and pay taxes. Either now, or in in a few short years as a college graduate.
Would it say good things or bad things about a country that sent the kid away?

The questions wasn't directed at me, but this is a recurring topic of conversation at home. My wife is a not a US citizen, but we share the same opinion: illegal aliens who come to this country are breaking the law. There are ways to come to this country legally, and many foreigners follow the rules to do so. While you can criticize the system and find faults with it, there IS a system for people to immigrate to our great country LEGALLY. Heck, even illegal aliens can seek to become legal residents and have options/possibilities to do so. Additionally, and more to the heart of your question, placing the blame on the US for enforcing immigration laws (and, thus, deporting illegal aliens and/or illegal residents who were brought here as kids) is a case of misplaced blame. While it is sad, and (perhaps) not an ideal situation, the blame should be place squarely on the parents. As parents, I believe it is our responsibility to look after our kids, to care for them, and to provide for their wellbeing. Parents who bring their kids here illegally and then fail to try to formalize their residency status are saddling their kids with the burden of a living in constant fear of deportation. Sometimes, some kids may not even realize they are illegal aliens. Regardless, the parent(s) who brought them here illegally, and then never made an effort to become legal, are shirking their parental responsibility of ensuring their kids wellbeing, safety and security. Don't blame the government. Blame the parents.

Re: Port-O Lounge
Home away from home
Home away from home

I thought I had already written a review for this place, but I can't seem to find it.

The wife and I have visited Port-O Lounge three times, the most recent one being a week ago. The first time we visited, we went in to have a glass of wine and just chill. It was nice, but dead. Our next visit was a much better experience overall. During that second visit, we ordered three dishes (their so called tapas are really entrees!) and thought the food was very good. Their "stewed" chorizo tapa was REALLY good. We also had some cocktails and a few glasses of wine and felt everything was great. To top it off, this place is really inexpensive for the quality and amount of food. Their staff was also very nice. The biggest difference that night was that the place got crowded around midnight. Pretty crowded, actually. Music was good, ambiance was great and it was a fun night. Our most recent visit was equally good. This time around the place was definitely crowded from the moment we showed up (around 10 PM) but it was not unbearable. They had a live DJ spinning from about 11 PM. Overall, another thumbs up. This time around we only went in for some wine and sat at the bar. The bartender was a really nice lady who has been there during all three of our visits. She is very nice and never makes you feel rushed. Around midnight, after having consumed some glasses of wine, I started to feel a bit hungry, but their kitchen had closed already. She put together a basket of bread (warmed Portuguese rolls!) with some olives and a butter spread and brought it out as if I had ordered a full meal. Very nice gesture!! Overall, this is a great place. I will be happy to keep patronizing them.

In the interest of full disclosure, and a warning to those who might find it off-putting, I should note that this place seems to be very popular with gays and lesbians. Not sure if it is simply a coincidence, but every time we have been there, most of the late night patrons are gays and lesbians. If you are cool with that, or even indifferent, you should visit Port-O Lounge and enjoy the food, drinks and ambiance. I think it is awesome to see a local establishment that welcomes and caters to all customers equally, with great food and drink. I wish them continued success!

Re: From "OX" to "BOX"
Home away from home
Home away from home

Finally got around to visiting Box a few weeks ago. The wife and I visited them on a weekend, shortly after opening time. We weren't expecting much (not sure why) and we both came away very happy and impressed. The food was definitely very well made. We ordered enough for three or four people (bad habit of ours) including their pad kee mow noodles (ordered them with vegetarian duck and extra spicy, and they were excellent!), two sushi rolls (can't remember which, but they were both fresh and really good) a bento box lunch (crispy shredded beef, also excellent) and some other entree. Entirely too much, but it gave us a glimpse of their various offerings. All in all, an excellent meal and we were both very happy. They are no longer a BYOB establishment (they have a full bar) but they allow you to bring and consume your own alcohol for a nominal fee (5 dollars per bottle, if i recall correctly.)

So, we will be back. Service was good, decoration was really nice (and cute) and the presentation of dishes was timed perfectly. We never felt rushed and were allowed to linger. The only complaint, or ding, is that the place was deserted! We were the only ones there for the 90 minutes we spent inside. A girl walked in as we were finishing our meal, but she was only there to pick up an order. I hope they are bringing in enough customers to stay in business, because the place is definitely good and I would like for them to make it over the long run.

Re: Cityside Bistro @Grand & Greene
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have been meaning to write about this place for quite some time but keep forgetting to do so.

At my urging, my wife and I gave this place a second try a month or so ago. Once again, the place disappointed in many ways. While the decor improved ever so slightly (they finally got rid of the ghastly maroon tablecloths!) the service was just atrocious. The bartender was unable to keep up with the 10 to 15 customers that were sitting around the bar. It wasn't even particularly busy. He simply kept walking away to talk to a waitress and would never check back on anyone. Any person that wanted another beer or drink needed to grab his attention by waving and calling him out.

The thing that really peeved me was that the beers seemed watered down. Something was definitely off with their taps, or kegs, or both. I first ordered a beer that didn't taste right (it tasted somewhat stale, and definitely felt like it was watered down) so, after a few minutes of trying to get his attention, I asked him to replace it with something else. I asked for a Guiness, and it was equally bad. We finished our drinks and left. There was nothing to be done. My wife's beer didn't taste right, either. There were a couple of buys next to us and they seemed equally disappointed/annoyed by their inability to get a second round of drinks.

I hope they improve their service and continue to get customers. I am sure it can't be easy to make a go of it, but their establishment is lacking and we will likely not be back anytime soon.

Re: parking ticket: motor vehicle nuisance? huh?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I think Robin is on to something. While I think it is the responsibility of citizens to follow the rules and abide by the law, I also think it is the government's responsibility to make those rules and laws clear, and to enforce them. Often times, yellow and red lines have faded to the point where they are not clear or even visible. Often times, signs are equally faded. The city could make a killing by enforcing parking regulations more consistently, but they should be fair and make it a level playing field by investing time (and money) into repainting curbs, and replacing old/faded signs.

Wow... not sure why the hate from jcitaliano. My wife and i have been here about four times. See above for my previous review. The last two times have been as good. We enjoy the food. We have tried many different dishes always come away satisfied. I am a bigger fan than my wife, but we both like it. It still gets stuffy in there (they have tried to make improvements by adding a fan to keep the smoke from getting into the dining room) but they make up for it with nice service. No horse in this race, since we have no relation to this place, but I think it is nice to see a family establishment in JC making an honest effort to please customers and improve the overall quality of life of city residents by giving us another dining option in town.

Agreed about the ever increasing crowding inside the PATH cars. I commute with a bicycle, and I am finding it harder and harder to bring it on board between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. I now ride the PATH to HOB and simply ride back into JC via the Newport walkway. I am not sure what to make of the uptick in ridership, but it is a real issue, with or without a bike. I don't know how the PATH will fare with all these new high-rises being approved and built. We will likely see an additional 3,000 residential units come on the market over the next few years. I don't want to think about what riding the PATH will be like in 2015!

That's a misleading headline... The initial suit took place in 2008, which was summarily dismissed by the presiding judge. The detective then appealed that decision, which was heard in late 2011 and decided on Friday. The appellate court reaffirmed the previous decision with another dismissal.

Reading through the appellate court's decision, this case reads more like an out-of-control detective who overstepped his duties and responsibilities in dealing with his neighbors, and other citizens, and then, when caught and reprimanded for that, decided to play the race card.

I for one think that the JCPD acted responsibly in this case.

I don't believe in BSL banning pit bulls, or other breeds, but I think legislation mandating muzzles in public is a good compromise. But, to the person complaining about the use of the word mauling, or the verb itself, there is nothing wrong with that. Mauling is, by definition, what happens when a person is attacked and injured by a dog. Don't take my word for it. Here is the Merriam-Webster definition: Definition of MAUL transitive verb 1: beat, bruise 2: mangle (see below) 3: to handle roughly Definition of MANGLE transitive verb 1: to injure with deep disfiguring wounds by cutting, tearing, or crushing 2: to spoil, injure, or make incoherent especially through ineptitude

Wait! What?! The victim (Poll, the guy who had a gun pointed at him!) manages to defend himself and take the gun away from the guy threatening his life and he is being charged with aggravated assault?? How does that make any sense??? Are we supposed to just do nothing and allow criminals to do whatever they want, whenever they want? I hope there is more to this story because, otherwise, I think this is a major FAIL for the JCPD and the JC justice system. A citizen should be allowed to defend his life when threatened. If someone pulls a gun on you, I think it is fair for you to defend yourself pretty much however necessary, with some limits (but few ones, at that.)
