Re: Car Alarm
Home away from home
Home away from home

Toonces, thank you for posting the ordinance!

To the OP, do not hesitate to call the police. The douche owner hasn't shown you, or the neighborhood, the courtesy to outfit his car with an alarm that meets established criteria and isn't a nuisance to the neighbors

I recently had a similar issue with an alarm that went off at 11 PM, not 100 feet from my window, and it wouldn't cease. After 90 minutes, I walked out, found my building's security guy (who was covering his ears, trying to avoid the racket) and told him to call the non-emergency number to report it. After 30 minutes or so, the police showed up. They ran the plates, located the owner and roused him out of bed to come shut off the alarm. After 15 minutes trying to get the alarm to shut off, he was unable to do so, so he was instructed to remove the battery and brought the ordeal to an end.

I relate this story to point out that the police will do the right thing: they will run the plates in an attempt to get an address for the registered owner, and will do their best to locate this person to have him/her address the problem. Don't assume that the police will go medieval on the car from the get go.

Hmm. Agreed. Tried it once for brunch and thought the food was uninspired, at best. If I recall correctly, it wasn't particularly pricey (for brunch) but it was somewhat greasy and the food was not memorable. I would be willing to give it another try if a new chef is coming on board.

Water Main Break by JSQ area (8/5)

ABC7 local news is reporting a water main break in the JSQ area. If you live in the area, you might be affected. I guess check with the local authorities or United Water for advisories.

Not sure what exactly happened, but service on the JSQ/33rd St line was suspended for a little over an hour (from shortly before noon, until shortly after 1 PM). Of course, no explanations in the PA alerts.

Wouldn't be surprised if more delays happen later today. Good luck everyone.

I don't believe that is the full story. I think that NY Waterway has adopted the losing strategy of raising prices to make up for decreased ridership. On the face of decreased sales, some companies opt to lower prices (or, some other form of increasing competitiveness) and how to make up the lower margin gains on volume, while others do the exact opposite: raise prices (until, invariably, they price themselves out of existence.)

Quite honestly, the ferry IS nice. And, definitely nicer than the PATH commute, but unless you work close to a ferry terminal in Manhattan, it is way too expensive (even if you can afford it) when compared to other forms of transportation/commuting. The cheapest daily commute by ferry is $14. That's 3 days of commuting by PATH, at the full price. And the PATH gets you to various points in midtown quickly. The ferry lets you out at the terminals, and you walk, cab or subway to your final destination. And, please, don't mention the free shuttle. Being stuck on a shuttle in morning traffic is vexing. Plus, the ferry charges an extra dollar (each way) to bring along your bicycle.

I think of the pull down metal gates as a vestige from the past. But, honestly, this could be a chicken or the egg thing. Maybe the crime rate on Newark Avenue is about the same as Washington Street in Hoboken *because* the metal grates deter the criminals.

I wasn't the one advocating incentives. I just jumped in to point out that incentives can take many forms. In the end, it is all about money. But I think it is a much better investment to provide incentives in the form of better services, lower crime, etc. Glad to see you agree with that.

Of course I also like the idea of a pedestrian/cycling tunnel, but I just don't see this as a viable alternative. You would need to have people movers inside, for sure. But, the biggest obstacle I can see for such an idea is that you would need to get NYC to agree to give up some valuable land to make this a reality. In addition, the area you suggest (Battery Park) is already laced with underground tunnels for cars, subways and such. You also have existing buildings, parks and roads that would/could be impacted by the construction and implementation of such a tunnel. NYers, especially monied ones, are rather whiny about such disruptions/inconveniences. I just don't see the city government signing up for something like this, and you wouldn't be able to force them.

Re: Whole Foods in JC?
Home away from home
Home away from home

With regards to the notion/assertion that people in the great European cities only buy food a day or two ahead of its use, I have some quibbles with that. After all, it is all about context. In many European cities (certainly the capitals and other major cities) the vast majority of people live in apartments/flats. Most of these are furnished with EXTREMELY small fridges (think the type you have in college dorms!) with limited space and usually without a freezer, or an extremely small one. Many people HAVE to shop several times a week because they CAN'T store more than a few days worth of groceries. Additionally, there are some other reasons why people don't buy too much of some things: bread (at least in some Western Europe countries) tends to go stale within a day or two. By day three, it resembles a brick! I guess less preservatives. That's a topic for another day. :)

Additionally, shopping trips by car are rather expensive as gas is at least twice as much as here. When gas was a dollar or two per gallon here, it was well over 4 dollars over there. Currently, gas prices in the continent are over $9 per gallon (1.8 euro per liter) and about the same in London. Nobody wants to drive, unless they have to.

So, yes, people over in Europe walk to their local markets to buy groceries several times per week, but that is often because they HAVE TO.

Re: Journal Squared Project to Begin

While I certainly believe that we should let market forces drive people's living/work decisions, the idea of incentives can not be discounted. The government (local, county, state) can incentivize people to move here by lowering crime, improving city life and providing for a clean, reliable and safe mode of transportation (like the light rail) while also incentivizing businesses with limited tax-breaks, or well thought-out subsidies.

Already, MANY Wall Street firms are moving back room operations to JC. Certainly, some of my larger clients have relocated to JC in recent years, and others are in the process of doing so. I see a LOT of businesses coming, which should help improve the tax base, which should result (in theory, and hopefully) in better government services.

The problem is not just the attitude of NYers. I know many people who reside in NJ who are now working in JC (because of office relocations to Exchange Place/Newport/Harsimus Cove) and who refuse to move to JC. Why? They don't necessarily feel safe, comfortable here. They still see JC as it was in the 80's/90's.

In the end, people will only relocate to JC if all the "pluses" outweigh the "cons" of doing so, including surpassing their current living situation elsewhere. Truth be told, some people will rather live in Summit, Short Hills, etc. than in the JC urban jungle. To each their own. I like it here, so I am not going anywhere, but I can definitely see/understand the thinking/logic of others.

I figured he meant rough in the sense of the prevailing patrons. I despise the place, so I fully understand what (I think) he meant. The place is littered with malcontents (customers and employees) who are miserable people: inside you will find customers yelling or "speaking" as if they were in a loud concert, people with attitudes and chips on their shoulders (you will get glared at if you ask some people to please move their carts so you can continue on your way), cashiers who will not hesitate to give you lip and attitude over a seemingly innocent question ("hey, those are peaches, not apples" or "i think the price you rang up is wrong", etc.), long lines and employees who truly don't want to be "bothered" by customers asking questions like "where can i find such and such".

Quite honestly, that ShopRite SUCKS.

Ha ha ha! You will not regret your purchase. I looked at that model and ultimately decided on the Intex version. I reckon they are essentially the same thing. Most impressive/surprising thing is being able to stand on them. You half expect the whole thing to collapse under your weight, but when properly inflated, these things are sturdy.

Maybe we should all organize a JCLIST kayaking meet up.

I think you missed my point. I will break it down for you: no one (at least, not me) is advocating for police brass to not allow policemen to use and enjoy their earned vacation. What I am saying is that the brass has a responsibility to review and approve vacation time requests. They don't HAVE to APPROVE every time request. Certainly, they should balance all requests to ensure that police force capacity and personnel levels remain at such level as to ensure that operational readiness and work output is not significantly affected.

As per the story in the OP, and the one relayed by Brewster, commanders have already stated that operational readiness is already affected, as personnel staffing levels are below necessary levels to provide for basic police services (i.e., foot patrols).

Re: sourcing ingredients in or around JC
Home away from home

Interesting question, CdeCoincy. I have gone back and forth on this very topic on a couple of occasions. While some financial planners/advisers counsel people to approach their free time as if it was a working/billable hour, I can't say that I fully agree with that philosophy any longer. At some point, it is simply unreasonable to evaluate each waking hour using the same metric. Much like peak/off-peak rates on some services/commodities, I feel that some of my hours are more valuable than others. I think it is also quite debatable if my leisure/personal time is worth as much as my work time. Strictly applying the philosophy of personal time being as valuable (money-wise) as work time, I would NEVER do anything myself, and yet I strive to be frugal and try to do almost anything myself. And, I do lots of mental calculations of the relative cost/worth of time, expenses, etc. If I was to use your calculation of personal time being 1.5 times the value of my calculated compensation per hour, I would never do anything myself, and I would never drive anywhere. That metric is simply not realistic in my case.

So, is it cheaper/worth it to drive (say, to Millburn, as I usually advocate/suggest to others) when food shopping? To me, the answer is a resounding yes. 15 minutes will get me out there, and I get to shop in an environment that I find more pleasing and civilized. 20 - 25 minutes gets me out to Wegmans, down in Woodbridge, and the selection, and prices, more than make up for the cost of gasoline there and back. If you factor in time to walk downtown, and then walk from shop to shop, I think I am coming out ahead in terms of time. And, again, in Wegmans I am shopping alongside a crowd that is much more pleasant and orderly. That has value (in terms of reduced stress, increased positive mood, etc.) Likewise, if I am doing my monthly Costco run, I drive down to Edison (25 minutes) instead of Clifton (20 minutes) because it is SO MUCH BETTER. Less people, less yelling, things are not strewn all over the place. And, I maximize that trip by hitting up Wegman's on the way back.

To better answer your question, I guess I don't have a rule of thumb per se, but I definitely try and figure out if the time driving there, along with the cost of gas, is worth the added expense. How much am I buying (50? 100? 200?) and that really drives the thought process. How do you currently do it?

Brewster, your story clearly illustrates the failure by the brass and superiors to effectively, efficiently and coherently manage the police force. "It's in the contract"?! Does that mean that it is also in the contract that superiors can abdicate their responsibility to the city and its citizens and NOT perform their managerial jobs??? A true leader would work to set vacation schedules that give employees their earned time off, while still providing the service they are LEGALLY REQUIRED to render. Unbelievable. And, scary. I wonder if the criminals "know" that Summer is basically open season on the "unprotected" masses. Apparently they do...

CuriousCat:

The city has no control over the PATH. Only the Port Authority can improve/change the PATH. Not developers, not the city.

About water taxis, have you EVER taken a ferry to Manhattan?? They are NOT crowded. Adding more ferries (which, btw, are private enterprises, not a city service) is not going to do ANYTHING, except maybe raise the ridiculously high fares they already charge (7 dollars from Paulus Hook to Wall Street, and more to go to Midtown.)

How do you suppose a bridge could be built? From where to where?? How do you force NYC to give up precious coastline space? Do you get to shut down the West Side highway for years? And, from the JC side, what land do you take back to get this bridge in place? Demolish Newport? Reclaim land from LSP?

I am all for making this area better, and I would LOVE to be able to bike into NY without having to go up to the GWB, or without jumping into the PATH, but we have to be realistic. A bridge from JC to Manhattan will not happen, EVER.

I am not a teacher, but I wholeheartedly agree with linky's assertion below. I directly trace my professional success and career development to my "fluency" in math and numbers. It was drilled into me early on by a handful of very dedicated teachers and I know it made a huge difference in my life. Any teacher that advocates the use of a calculator in place of actual brain power is doing your kid a disservice.

Yvonne, how are additional stations going to help with the overcrowding inside trains? What the PATH needs is to extend the existing platforms, so the trains can expand to 10 cars. Even that may be too little too late, as such a project will likely take several years to complete.

Did you miss the part about having to make it to the ferry??? That's usually a slow bus ride for many commuters, unless they can get a ride from someone to the ferry station.

The difference of the light rail option, if it ever came to be, is that a Staten Island service would likely have a service similar to the already existing Bayonne Flyer, which skips several stops to improve trip times. I would assume they would make it to Pavonia in 40 minutes, or less, and then the PATH to midtown is another 25 - 30 minutes (including transfer time). That's a lot faster than what they currently enjoy.

For people who dont have cars, the easiest option is hitting up TJ's or WF in the city, which earlier in this thread I advocated. What I find silly is to drive out to Edgewater, when driving to Millburn is so much easier and faster. And, that was my only point.

I must have said this at least three or four times here in JC LIST. Why bother with TJs or Whole Foods in Edgewater, or TJs in Clifton, when you can easily drive out to Millburn/Vauxhall and get your WF/TJs fetish sated in one place, all within a mile of each other. And, if big box retail is your thing, you can also hit up a Target Greatland over there, next to the WF, as well as a Home Depot and a Best Buy. 15 minutes, tops, from DTJC and much nicer patrons than Clifton, or any of the local choices. The only reason I ever have to go out to Edgewater to do some food shopping is Mitsuwa (there is simply no equivalent anywhere) but there are ways to get good quality Asian ingredients elsewhere.

In our region's insane, balkanized transit reality, wouldn't this route from Staten Island to NYC require three fares on three separate commuter lines?

And? Guaranteed that many, many SI people will rather pay three fares, and make it to the city much faster, than enduring their usual 2+ hour commute. I have friends who spend at least two hours, each way, getting to/from home in SI. It is an insane commute, and honestly I never understood why people do it. For many of them, commuting involves a bus, or car ride, to the ferry, then the ferry, then the subway (or, bus). My usual 45-minute commute from JC to midtown is envied by many, many people. :)

oh, come on, nyrgravey9. I was NOT talking about you! I was actually referring to Heights, who loves to complain and whine about everything, and even chimed in about the loose dogs, but yet comes in this thread and clearly stated he rides on the sidewalks (but carefully!) Where's the disconnect?! There is no excuse to ride on a sidewalk. And, his doing so is illegal and inconsiderate to others. He should get off his bike and walk it when forced off the road.

My bigger point is that some people complain about a "crime" (committed by others) but then justify their own "crimes" with some (usually lame) excuse.

Honestly, as naive and unrealistic as it may sound, I really hope that the police will start to crack on all these seemingly insignificant, petty infractions. I am not necessarily advocating for tickets for everyone. As someone else on the other thread suggested, a stern reminder/talk/warning can be a sensible approach and could be very effective towards getting people to change/improve their habits and behavior.
