There goes that JC inferiority complex rearing its ugly head, again. Honshu is good, period. Why do so many people feel the need to qualify their local choices?

Seriously, I have yet to meet ANYONE that isn't happy, or downright impressed, with Honshu and its menu, preparation and presentation. I would put Honshu among the best sushi places I have tried in the NYC area, and the list of places I have tried is quite long.

What Brewster said: ha ha ha! I had a similar thought cross my mind, but in a more benign way. It occurred to me that some here (myself included?) may show up from time to time to watch the action unfold and provide encouragement.

Too bad the guy turned out to be a douche. Perhaps this next one works out better. I am glad and encouraged to see the eagerness and willingness in your part. Really good traits.

And, never forget: it's better to have a life of oh wells than a life of what ifs.

+1 on the Hudson Mall idea. That seems like a rather slow place, and the one time I had to visit that store, it was easy to get help, and I only had to wait a minute or two for someone to be available.

As the popular Internet meme goes: pics or it didn't happen!

It all seriously, though. I hope it goes well. You seem like a hopeful romantic, which is A OK in my book. And, apparently, you have several others in this board rooting for you.

Funny. I was wondering, too. Hopefully, this time around the guy didn't lie and turned out to be close in age to her.

+1 on making your own screens. It is a VERY easy job. I have done a couple of door sized screens, and found it to be easy. The first one was a bit of a screw up, as I was pulling it too tight, but once you get the hang of it, you can breeze through the process. Lowe's and Home Depot sell the kits.

Re: Jury duty questions
Home away from home

Definitely a good suggestion to bring an iPad, or laptop. The jury pool room has decent WiFi freely available to all.

I was there earlier this year. I was selected to be in a jury on my second day. The whole trial essentially lasted 1 day, but it spread out into the following week, as they don't do court on Fridays. We listened to opening statements on Wednesday, adjourned for the day, listened to the case almost all of Thursday, got the case handed to us right before it was time to call it a day, so we deliberated for a few minutes, couldn't reach a consensus and jointly decided to come back one more day to be able to fully debate the merits of the case and to reach a decision. Since court is out on Fridays, that meant coming back on Monday. It only took us an hour on Monday to reach a final decision, but it was the right thing to do, as opposed to rushing into things.

Surprisingly, the jury duty experience was rather satisfying and rewarding in some ways.

Hmm. In NJ, it is NOT required by state law that bicyclists wear helmets, unless they are under the age of 17. Inform yourself before you spew nonsense.

State of NJ Bicycle Regulations

But, I am with you on the last two points: people shouldn't ride on the sidewalks, nor should they disregard traffic signals, or signs.

- ride on sidewalks

LSP Park & Ride: $57.50 per month. No hassle, 24 hrs security, no need to move the car, or worry about it being stolen, broken into or damaged by careless drivers/pedestrians.

The shop in Newport (mentioned below: Giovanni) is definitely very good, but it is very expensive. I have taken many things there, partly out of habit, partly because the guy is so friendly, but you will pay what I consider to be above average prices.

With regards to that JCPA honking "courtesy"... I find the practice to be completely irrational and unwarranted. Courtesy? What about people who work evenings and need to sleep until later in the morning? Many a time I have been woken up by these absurdly loud honks, and I find them to be very annoying. Why should irresponsible/clueless residents get a "courtesy honk" to the detriment of the rest of the citizens on his/her block??

You want to increase and fix the municipal budget? Stop the damn JCPA honking and start issuing tickets for cars that haven't been moved to comply with the posted cleaning times! After a while, people will learn to wake up on time and move their cars, or make necessary adjustments.

Re: Jersey City seeking to recruit minorities to join police ranks

Your argument would be so much more compelling if your math wasn't so WAY OFF.

You got the White and Latino percentages right, but the other ones were way off. I will help you:

Black: 61.5% LESS
Asian: 91.7% LESS

The percentages represent your criteria of what "you'd expect if JCPD mirrored the city's population". Not sure that is a valid criteria, but there you have it.

As a rule of thumb, if something is over 100% LESS, you would be talking about a zero, or a negative. Since the participation of people in the police force couldn't be negative (as in, you can't possibly have negative x number of Asians in the JCPD) then your percentages fail the common sense test.

FAB:

You are misunderstanding the law that you quoted. The law you quoted doesn't apply in this case. You missed the first requirement of applicability: "pertaining to juveniles charged as a delinquent or found to be part of a juvenile-family crisis". Emphasis is mine.

The kid is an asshole, the parents are clueless (at best) or complicit (at worst) and he will now have to live with the consequences. For those who don't think this will follow him, or affect his future, you are naive. This will temporarily stunt, or affect, his high school career, which can easily have the domino effect of affecting his college career. And, as someone else pointed out, in this age of digital media, this will be forever around (and, easily accessible) in one way or another.

Re: Public Service Announcement - Raccoons

Home away from home

Interesting thread, indeed. I heard from two neighbors about raccoon sightings IN our building. Our open layout must be alluring to them, as it also affords some shelter and places to hide/nest. But, yes, it seems like more and more raccoons may be popping up in JC. We live across from LSP, and I always assume that they find this area to be fertile ground to breed and live.

Add to the raccoon sightings, my own personal sightings of many more wild rabbits in LSP. At this point, it is actually something I look forward to as I go for my morning runs. They are very skittish, and hop away into the fenced area as they hear me approach.

Yes, Area_Man. Graffiti with a purpose, on a designated area for that purpose, is art and can be awesome. I never claimed otherwise. What I find annoying is people who want to defend the defacing acts of some of the graffiti "artists". Like I said, anyone who puts graffiti on private property (without permission) is a criminal.

Re: Kayaking in JC

100% agreed, Brewster. And, I wasn't trying to be contrarian. Quite the opposite. I find your posts to be well reasoned and logically laid out.

I was simply adding another perspective on the idea of commuting by kayak. Personally, I am thinking about giving it a try once a week to see how it goes. It is mostly for fun and the sheer challenge of the whole thing. Paddling (even in busy, or non-optimal, conditions) is relaxing to me, just like commuting by bicycle is fun and relaxing to me (despite the crazy, aggressive drivers, and clueless pedestrians.) Maybe I just enjoy adrenaline pumping.

Re: Kayaking in JC

Despite Brewster's well reasoned post, I am going to provide a slightly different opinion.

I think commuting by kayak is doable, and fun. An inflatable might be a stretch, because it will require more effort, but it is doable.

There are already some people that commute by kayak. Gothamist ran a piece on some school teacher who does it on a daily basis (link) and I read elsewhere about a pair of dudes that also paddle across the Hudson several times a week.

Tough luck, and I hope they find the person(s) responsible.

Unfortunately, many in here keep defending these "artists" as people to be accommodated and their "art" appreciated. I call BS. Anyone that trespasses and/or defaces private property is a criminal. It's that simple.

Like I said before, and SteveWilson blissfully ignored: putting up any sort of stop sign, traffic light, etc., requires a lot of effort. But, OK. Carry on. I am sure you can debate this to death over the next few days. You will not get a stop sign anytime soon. That's a fact.

People DO have alternatives. If you don't want to be stuck in traffic, use a different method of transportation: bike, train, subway, motorcycle, bus, ferry, etc. I find amusing that some people in the NYC metro area complain about commuting options or alternatives.

I think the OP is being a bit overdramatic. No dog is going to be impaled by these prongs. In fact, I think what he is "reporting" are in the same vein as these:
Resized Image

These are examples of tools used to prevent pigeons from gathering in a particular place.

In any case, give your dog some credit! He will see and detect these "impaling devices" before they can do any damage.

PS/Disclaimer: I am a dog owner.

I also second grodonh's suggestion of the BBO deal at Maritime Parc. Hard to top that Thursday night deal! The oysters are always top quality, their draft beer selections always include some great quality options and the burgers (all of them) are great. As he (she?) points out, the salmon version is probably the least great, but it is still solid. I'll be there this Thursday!

Obviously, you, and I, and the countless others bitching and complaining about the ShopRite are in it together (for some not yet determined reason) to disparage a paragon of customer service and food excellence. In our distorted reality, the place is crap, but thankfully Moto has corrected that. We now know that we have made it all up, or dreamt it. Thanks, Moto.

So, is it 8.5 years? Or, 11 years?? Typical JJ crap reporting, I suppose. Poorly edited and/or facts don't quite mesh properly.

Also, anyone else find the guy's salary a tad high?? ~100K / yr ain't too bad, especially when you factor in that (if he had not kissed it all away) there is a generous pension waiting after 20 years, plus the many other job perks, PLUS OT.
