Re: Another accident on Pavonia and Newark
Home away from home
Home away from home

That's not a bad idea.

I once thought you could combine the "no left turn" sign for eastbound traffic on Pavonia with a "no turns" sign for westbound traffic on Newark. You could turn Pavonia east of Chestnut into a one-way (eastbound) and have all Pavonia-bound westbound traffic make the left onto Chestnut and then right on Pavonia. You'd signalize the Chestnut/Newark intersection (including a left-arrow phase) and probably have to coordinate signal timings with the Palisade/Newark intersection since they're so close together.

Point is, that kamikaze left-turn movement from Newark onto Pavonia is scary if you're a pedestrian who has to walk in front of it. Same is true for the intersection of Newark/Seventh down the hill.

Look parker, its illegal to park near the curb BECAUSE of idiots like you that think the behavior described in the quoted sentences are legit. People that think its O.K. to ?creep? their cars forward through the crosswalk, who look ONLY at the oncoming traffic but ignore the pedestrians that come from the other direction NEED to be ticketed. I rejoice that your getting ticketed, it gives me hope that the city is giving a nod to pedestrian safety.

?When I'm creeping out into an intersection (traffic coming from left to right), and I'm trying really hard to see around the car blocking my view to the left, I'm only annoyed at that car, not the one parked by the stop sign to my right. That car's fine.? That car is NOT fine, you idiot. The owners of BOTH cars are putting the lives of pedestrians in danger for the sake of their own convenience. Tickets all around!

I agree, though I'd skip the "idiot" stuff. The one time I (as a pedestrian) have been hit by a car was when a driver was stopped at the corner of 3rd and Manila and (I assume) only looking in the direction of oncoming traffic. As I was crossing (in the crosswalk), he hit the gas and I ended up on the hood of his car (not seriously hurt, thankfully). Responsible drivers need to look in all directions before proceeding at all intersections, and the intersections need to be free of obstructions to allow them to do so. Thorough and consistent enforcement of parking rules will help make that possible. If there's a good chance of getting ticketed, people will be far less likely to park at an intersection, in a crosswalk, on the sidewalk, and all of the other crazy places people in JC think it's cool to park.

Truth. Why on earth do the ped signals not change automatically? I think the City should require automobiles to roll down their window and press a button (and then wait a cycle or two) to get a green light.

Anyway, pedestrians and cyclists, BE CAREFUL out there. Traffic is moving much faster along CCD now. Adjust your timing when crossing accordingly. I've had to scramble across a couple of times already.

I agree with others who said the bread is too thick/"bready," but overall the food isn't bad at all (so far I've just had the falafel and the babaganoush). The service is quick and friendly. The prices are good. They're closer to my house than Ibby's, and being open late on weekends is a bonus. I'm happy to have them here, and I'll add them into my takeout rotation.

Well what I've seen by driving around Hudson County over the years is those Conrail trains pick up freight in Newark Bay from those huge container ships that come in. Then the freight trains head north, I've seen them deposit those containers off the Turnpike near the Vince Lombardi rest stop. They are then picked up by 18 wheelers, but I can't imagine Conrail doing such a short journey?

CSX is doing a long journey. Most of the boxes coming off trains at Little Ferry are coming from Chicago (or the Port of LA/LB via Chicago). The 18 wheelers then pick up the boxes and take them to distribution centers where the contents are repackaged and delivered to retail stores, etc in this region. Norfolk Southern has a yard with a similar function at Croxton (across the street from the USPS facility on County Rd). Outbound trains coming from the Port may pick up or drop off a few boxes for NYS&W railroad to schlep to Syracuse.

Most of the freight coming from Port Newark/Elizabeth that needs to leave this region goes out on Norfolk Southern's line paralleling I-78 into PA and beyond or north along the National Docks, through Jersey City, and north on CSX River Line to Albany before hooking a left and heading west toward Chicago.

Here's a list of some of the major intermodal terminals in the area, from the Port Authority's website. Several of these facilities are adjacent to the National Docks line, which passes through JC (over Newark Bay, under the TPK extension, through Bergen Tunnel, etc.)

Re: To ease truck congestion at Bayonne's exit 14A - trucks diverted to Greenville's 14B exit
Home away from home
Home away from home

That's the part that doesn't make sense to me either. It's actually about 2.5 miles from the Port Jersey 14A access to Exit 14B. So every truck leaving Port Jersey will go 2.5 miles up to 14B, enter the turnpike, and come 2.5 miles back before reaching where they "should've" gotten on in the first place. So every truck is traveling an extra 5 miles here in Jersey City/Bayonne.

I recall (though I couldn't find the news article) that the Port Authority is expecting Global/MOTBY to handle 1 million TEUs of freight a year upon build-out. One TEU is equal to a little more than 2 truckloads. So roughly 500,000 truckloads of freight will come into Global/MOTBY. Let's pretend rail will take 20% of that volume (similar ratio to Port Newark/Elizabeth). So 400,000 trucks each year will pour out the gate at Global/MOTBY, and take a 5 mile ride through our fair city before exiting the Peninsula. 400,000 trucks X 5 extra miles = 2 million truck vehicle miles traveled (VMT). That's 2 million extra miles trucks will have to travel each year because they'll be using 14B instead of 14A. I'm not sure what that equates to in terms of PM emissions, CO2 emissions, NOx emissions, etc., but the figure is alarming.

14A is a nightmare (hence the reason to redesign it, right?), but I can't imagine that there's not an alternative in which we can make a new 14A work better and handle more traffic. Maybe it involves getting rid of the 53rd street spillout, maybe it involves having a dedicated truck ramp from Port Jersey into the tolls, but 2 million extra truck VMT is not a desirable option for residents in either city.

4th Street Brawl

Home away from home

Anyone live at or close enough to 4th & Coles to enjoy the sights and sounds of the brawl in the middle of the street involving approx. 20 yutes at 3:00 this morning? More screaming and posturing than actual beating, though when I saw the baseball bats come out I called 911 (but nobody answered. Thankfully it wasn't a serious emergency, eh?).

And it was all "over a b!tch" smh.

Re: New Lights along Columbus Ave

Oy, I've been caught in the middle of Columbus Drive when the lights change too. It's scary. The push-button signals are just stupid. They're not effective. I wish they'd make automobile drivers have to press a button and wait a cycle or two for a green light.

Another bad one is Coles and Newark. The ped signal goes from solid "WALK" to a flashing "WALK" (when it should be flashing "DON'T WALK). Then it goes to solid "DON'T WALK." I've walked out into the intersection seeing "WALK" flashing there and then suddenly it goes solid "DON'T WALK" and the traffic signals change. It doesn't make sense. Who made that "ooops"?

Re: Tommy Two Scoops - New cafe on York

I love Tommy Two Scoops. They're always switching out the flavors, so every time I go, there's something new to try. Some of the flavors seem really odd (wasabi, olive oil and parmesan, coconut curry, etc) but most are really good. The folks behind the counter are friendly, and it's always a pleasant experience.

Last time I was there the owner (Tommy?) was telling me that they're going to enclose a portion of the back deck so that they'll have a small indoor dining area. There's plenty of space back there, so there will still be a large patio area too.

Re: Trees along Christopher Columbus drive
Home away from home
Home away from home

This whole project makes me furious. The last thing JC needs is another expressway into downtown. Look at what happened to Grand Street when the on-street parking was removed to add lanes. It's a speedway. And when Columbus becomes 5-lanes, smooth, and pot-hole-free it will just function as an extended off-ramp from the Turnpike.

And btw, the folks at Goldman who demanded this set-up years ago are LEAVING TOWN! So forgetaboutit.

On-street resident parking is a community asset. Don't get rid of it! Safety and slow speeds in a downtown residential area are important. Don't build a highway through it! This project is not good for the folks who live on or near Columbus Dr.

Sorry for the rant, but nobody at city planning wanted to hear it.

Re: City Council Meeting Tonight - March 24th

Home away from home

To those of you who couldn\'t make it, don\'t worry. The Council wasted no time sticking it to us again.

Council voted against introducing ordinances to eliminate health benefits for JCIA and MUA board members. Win for the administration and its cronies. Loss for us.

The \"Fulop muzzle\" ordinance, up for second-read tonight, passed. Win for the administration and its cronies. Loss for us, and for our voice in Council.

Surprisingly the ordinance on JC1TV passed first-read this time! Possible win for us!

A young man from Ward A stood up to comment on rising teen violence, and proposed a teen mentoring/coaching program. He asked why Councilman Sottolano had not responded to his repeated efforts to talk to him about the program. Sottolano\'s only response was, \"I\'ve been in youth ministry for 40 years. When you get that much experience talk to me.\" He and Council President Brennan laughed in the face of this man who was desperately trying to get someone to do something about violence in his neighborhood. And these guys laugh him off the podium. It\'s disgusting. The man\'s plea fell on deaf ears. The city had coaches working part-time for minimum wage. They were fired to save the city some cash. The city didn\'t get rid of the car we bought and maintain for Councilman Vega. The city didn\'t get rid of health benefits for JCIA and MUA board members (Healy appointees) who serve one hour a month. The city fired soccer coaches who earn minimum wage part-time and keep the kids out of the streets. Where are the priorities and allegiances? With the people or with friends of the mayor?
