Re: wtf - JCPD - insane ticket
Home away from home
Home away from home

Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks period. No ifs, ands or buts. Pedestrians are soft tissued, easily breakable - cars are metal, 2000 lbs. I've never in my life lived anywhere else where this is put in question daily on the streets when cars don't stop, try and get away without stopping or just barely let you walk across. I've been almost hit 3 times and can't count the near misses on many other occasions in the past ten years living here. And all I've done is try to cross the street, carefully, at a pedestrian crosswalk.

Other cities are well trained in the civility of letting a pedestrian cross. It's the law. Why are we different?

It doesn't matter if it takes you 10 more minutes to get to work letting a dozen pedestrians at a dozen crosswalks cross. It is civil, it's the law, it's the thing to do. If you don't like waiting, find another route. What a great city it would be if we were that civil to one another instead of seeing what we can get away with.

And if you make the argument pedestrians needs to do their job first and cross correctly or whatever the argument will be on this thread that pedestrians have to do their part. Nope. Cars are BIG. Cars are HEAVY. Cars can kill. Let the cars start being polite and letting people cross. We can teach our pedestrians after, why? Because then they are still ALIVE to learn how.

Re: Ineptitude - Rudeness and Idiocy RULE THE DAY AT THE JC POST OFFICE
Home away from home
Home away from home

Once again USPS have illustrated their massive ineptitude. Received a Last Notice Certified mail notice - never received the FIRST one. I hear the carrier placing this in my mail box but obviously didn't ring my buzzer. I call the number on the back of the post card. They tell me that number is wrong and to call their supervisor's number. I call, it rings about 30 times, no answer. I call the first number back and she lets her phone ring about 25 times and then it goes in to a voice mail system that says her voice mail isn't set up to receive voice mails.

I phone customer service to file a complaint. I get an equally bitter person. If this was a private business they'd be OUT of business. Sigh.

I started getting mail sent (signature only) to my downtown JC office because of the courier problems in our area (if you've read my stories, the amount of items missing, stolen etc. was getting unreal).

USPS signature only never arrived at my office. The postal carrier listed it as "received", tracking confirmed this. IT WAS NEVER RECEIVED. Contacted the offices and they suggested it was probably placed in the wrong mail box and to place signage up and to inform the carrier via a note in our mail box. Essentially the item was never found. HOW IS THE CARRIER NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR AN ITEM THEY SAY I RECEIVED BUT DID NOT?

The sender says it notes as received so how are they to obtain insurance on this item?

Our JC post office runs like a third world country. How can we force accountability if we can't even talk to someone with power and authority to do something? UNREAL.

If it bothers you simply because you have some kind of wacky notion that things will always be the way you want it then you are already losing.

You conveniently frame opponents as irrational by refusing to acknowledge that there's lasting negative effects on the lawn long after the dog is gone. The pre renovation HP West lawns were always dustbowls in the middle with brown spots where there was grass and you'd have to be nuts to even walk there never mind sit. If you must ignore the laws and common courtesy, please do that destruction to the 8th street side and leave the dog free side alone.

We are not repainting. We're touching up scratches on our already historic painted door and window frames which were one before we bought.

Generally, you have got to pay, that's the cost of living in JC. I posted tis earlier, but to repeat, you might be entitled to a huge property tax reduction if the City hasn't valued your property correctly:

You can appeal. I'd recommend

I used it last year, and saved over $7k/year on my tax bill. The other useful sites are

and

I went to the website www.easytaxfix.com and it seems almost too good to be true! It was incredibly easy to do.

Re: Do not use UPS delivery in downtown JC

Home away from home

UPS contacted me after I filed BBB complaint. They promised me they have disciplined the driver and that all packages are flagged as signature only to my address. The driver talked to me about it and I explained the problems in our area.

To be safe I use work address. On another note, had two packages from same Seller delivered to work in downtown JC building. USPS placed one of the tracked packages in the WRONG mail box in our building but confirmed receipt to our offices. Lucky for us it was dropped off by staff from the other office but the second package (confirmed via tracking as delivered) was never located. The downtown JC post box doesn't take full responsibility in this incidence and has you do all the leg work - so be cautious - delivering to office isn't really any easier.....

What happened with the previous packages that were stolen? Was there any recourse?

One package was ticketmaster concert tickets. We were home, no buzz at door and we checked every 15 as per usual while tracking online and it said it was "delivered" but NEVER saw anything at the door...interesting, no? Ticketmaster filed. We did a police report. If they sold the tickets (valued at over $400) and the concert venue scanned them, they would be caught at the venue and we were told, arrested.

Second package was this Christmas. Same issue. Vendor had to deal with it through insurance and put in a special request for signature only. When the package arrived it looked very expensive (box was designed with logo etc.) but it wasn't, I can see how a courier would think it's worth keeping.

Keep in mind - on all packages we paid the highest price available to us for courier delivery - it still didn't provide us signature only. There is also nowhere on those vendors websites to request that - all you can do is pay highest price and presume that means "signature only".

If you have these issues as you all seem to (above) I hope you wouldn't mind taking some time to file with BBB. http://www.bbb.org/

A LARGE COMPANY LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT GET AWAY WITH SUCH SHODDY SERVICE. They are taking advantage of us.

The SELLER of the item has refunded me the full cost of courier ($36.95 overnight) and they will take it up with UPS. I filed a complaint with the BBB.

What I understand is UPS won't do SIGNATURE ONLY for any price of courier service you request UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY REQUEST. Imagine the benefits to them - one let it slip that the cost of faster courier employees, trucks etc. vs. insurance on stolen, "lost" items weighs out in their favor.

BELOW IS MY COMPLAINT ID IF YOU WISH TO INCLUDE SO IT'S A LARGER COMPLAINT. (It's a head office).

Complaint ID#: 80168941
Business Name: United Parcel Service

We have forwarded your case to BBB that services the area where the business is located.

Please contact the following BBB for further information regarding your complaint:

Do not use UPS delivery in downtown JC
Home away from home
Home away from home

For the third time in less than a year, the UPS driver has left a package on my stoop that required a signature. Over a year's time 3 packages have been stolen because of this. And YES, I get my packages delivered to my office, with the exception of when I have no choice but to send to my residence but obviously it's NEVER worked with UPS. I feel like I live in a 3rd world country!

As we know the reputation of UPS we cringed when we heard the sender used their services and checked outside every 15 minutes starting after 5pm. Sure enough, the driver left the package at the door while we were home waiting for it. No buzz. A valuable package I paid $35 courier fees for 2 day air delivery.

Contacted UPS and they said unless the sender specifies beyond the services they offer that they want a signature that, get this: SIGNATURES ARE NO LONGER AUTOMATIC ON ANY DELIVERIES INCLUDING THE OVERNIGHT, 2 DAY AIR etc., where you pay a fortune. Even though our address is FLAGGED in their system that ALL packages require a signature due to three other packages being stolen off our stoop.

UPS takes no responsibility. The company that sent the items will be filing a complaint with UPS to refund the $35 as they paid for a service they didn't get. ESSENTIALLY, UPS SUCKS.

Re: Tenant rights

Imagine if a tenant informed the landlord they were leaving 20 days later, or 25, or 11, or 14 in to that month. Would the landlord ammortize a day rental rate? I don't think that's how it works or would be only fair to the tenant, but I do know when my wife and I rented we asked our landlord for options for the last month and worked something out that benefitted them painting the place early and us being able to move over a few weeks. In the end it felt like it cost us more than moving that final month, but it permitted us to move the way we needed to.

A word of advice.....don't be out on the street on the first warm night of late spring. The job is gonna get real exciting again like the late 80s and early 90s. Everybody cries that the cops make too much money, have too many benefits, are lazy etc.... They're knocking out pretty much a whole district in terms of manpower. Everybody on here who thinks the cops have it so good and should be cut are going to get thier wish. Think your taxes are going down when they get rid of these guys? The only thing going down is your property values. Might I add the majority of people living in JC rent. If you rent you dont pay real estate taxes so stop complianing about taxes. Only your landlord pays property tax.

What I find most entertaining is whenever a builder/developer is in a litigation situation they go beyond taking the low road. They show their true colors, green for greed or pond scum, whichever you prefer. I've witnessed neighbors work through mediation with losers playing below the belt with seedy methods and close to illegal strategies for making issues go away. Hyman likes his weeds? Wow, how very pre-school of an insult sir. Don't you have better things to do?

I know not all builders are the same as I think the community members of the Hamilton Square Park development have shown - but it's a shame I have witnessed so many with this entitlement behavior. How are people like this raised? There is a deep down insecurity that goes beyond this issue. Go to therapy, don't wreck other families over your Napoleon complex. And why do so many set up shop in downtown Jersey City? What friends do these scums like this have? Something tells me friends are few and far between for these people. Lucky Hyman has a spouse to hang with. They are winning no points with the community and they should know - word spreads fast in this town. People know who those grifters are.
