53 Things About Jersey City

That "article" was written by a real estate brokerage. I'd take everything it says with a massive pillar of salt.

A pillar of salt, and someone should give the "author" a basic lesson on "its" vs. "it's". Here's a GREAT place to start!

My personal favorite was the asswipe trying to justify his ILLEGAL driveway by explaining he was ADDING spaces to the street by not parking his cars on the street.

On the outbound road (the one that extends from the Holland Tunnel into JC as you exit the tunnel) you will find two such stations: Hess (immediately to your right, as you exit the tunnel) and the BP, which is located on your right towards the end of the road, before you get to the turnpike on-ramp.

I have actually had these thoughts in the past. Unfortunately, the traffic from commuters cutting through our neighborhood has only gotten worse over the past few weeks, and I don't think anything will change that, not even out pockmarked streets.

(I couldn't believe the traffic cone "solution" that was employed for about two months in that two feet deep crater under the turnpike. That hole is so deep that it's been patched twice already and it won't hold.)

The cone solution was the stupidest, saddest joke. Unfortunately, nothing has really been done. Every time they patch those big holes, rains and traffic rip out the temporary band aids. I am expecting Pacific to remain as it is for another year or two. It took VERY LONG for Columbus to be fixed, and that was a main thoroughfare into many areas in downtown.

How do you take a picture that covers the ENTIRE length of an Avenue?? Because ALL of Pacific, from Grand to Communipaw, is a pothole nightmare, on top of uneven asphalt.

2014 Pacific Avenue is like 2010 Christopher Columbus Drive. So pitifully torn up that it is actually worse than some roads in some third world countries.

There is also a MASSIVE pot hole on Merseles St, just south of Bright St, that can/will damage a rim, or possibly break someone's axle. Whenever I go past it on a motorcycle, it scares me half to death to think what if I forget and hit it. A lawsuit waiting to happen!!

I think the 100,000 people is a bit exaggerated, but do keep in mind that they are expecting people not just from Hudson County, but also from towns outside our immediate area.

Also, as a minor quibble, seeing how the population of Hudson County is over 650,000 people, a total of 100,000 would only equal 15%, not a quarter (25%).

That linked article was a messy hodge podge of liberal, religious and socialist ideas. He tried to make a point by mixing all those viewpoints and ended up making it confusing and nonsensical. And, he muddied the issue by not being clear in the distinction between inheritance taxes and estate taxes.

Generally speaking, inheritance taxes and estate taxes are different in that the estate tax is levied against the estate of the deceased, while the inheritance tax is levied on the money and property received by a beneficiary.

Regardless, a person that has worked hard all his/her life, who along the way has paid taxes on his earnings and the fruit of his labors, is faced with paying an additional tax upon his/her death, and his/her beneficiaries will also have to pay a tax on whatever they receive (which, in NJ, has already been taxed twice - in life, and then at death). How is this, in anyone's mind, possibly OK or fair??

Bicycles should be fine, but it will likely translate into walking your bike once inside the park. Lots of people coming and going on the paths will likely force all bike riders to walk their bikes. Maybe I am wrong, of course. Time will tell. :)

Re: how much does it cost for a 2br apt in downtown JC ?

Not to mention that if you are renting, the total monthly rent is your total monthly expense. If you were to pull out a mortgage that equals $4,000 (or, $5,000) per month, you are talking about a property that is close to 1 million dollars, for which you are likely to pay another $20,000 in property taxes. That bumps the total monthly costs another $1,500. Add to that the requisite property insurance, and the regular costs associated with owning a property, and you can see how the math is simply not that simple. If the property is a condo, you must also factor in the HOA and maintenance costs. Before you know it, your $5,000 mortgage translates into a monthly outlay of about $8,000, maybe more.

The Hoboken re-route sucked this morning. But, what made it particularly annoying was that they didn't make an announcement on Grove St BEFORE getting on the train. Instead, it was the usual useless messages on the PATHVision monitors. After arriving on Newport, and as the doors were closing, the conductor made the surprise anouncement: "Next Stop: Hoboken". Everyone is looking around trying to figure out if it was a mistake, or correct.

Is it really THAT hard for the PA to send an update to the PATHVision monitors to alert users to the impending delay due to a re-route??

Better we should protect our taxpayers and not screw them. People should be able to pass on their fair share to their heirs (that they paid tax on while earning it) without the state grabbing it for their idea of redistribution.

Inheritance taxes are really some of the most unfair/evil taxes. Money being passed on to heirs, after it has already been taxed in the past, makes ABSOLUTELY no sense.

I work REALLY hard, I pay my fair share of taxes, I then pay taxes on my savings as well, and then, when I finally kick the bucket and leave my kid some money, she will have to pay taxes on that AGAIN. It is no wonder that most states have moved to abolish this most egregious of taxes.

Where not to die in 2014!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... It's obvious your reading comprehension is that of an illiterate.

I live in Bergen Lafayette, and yes, I see lots of people biking, almost all going elsewhere. And, as for Central Ave and all business/commercial districts, I specifically said all those areas should get racks.

As for my biking, or lack of it, I can only say I ride upwards of a thousand miles a year. If that's too little by your standards, well... so be it.

If you live in the vicinity of LSP's northern entrance (Communipaw/Johnston/and the immediate side streets) be warned that street parking may get tight today as the LSP Park & Ride customers are being told to remove their cars tonight (before 7/4 1AM) and to park elsewhere.

Why the obsession with making sure ALL neighborhoods get equal treatment of EVERYTHING?? It wouldn't make any sense to put bike racks all over the place in neighborhoods where people are not going to on bikes!

In my mind, it makes sense to put bike racks where people are going. That is downtown business areas, the vicinity of PATH stations, and over by the commercial/restaurant areas. Over in the Heights, by JSQ and whatever other business districts that would warrant them. But, honestly, why would I want a bike rack in BeLa? No one is riding bikes around here to get to businesses in enough numbers to warrant their placement all over town. No one is commuting to BeLa in significant numbers. And, before you discount me as a ghetto hater, I will tell you I live in the neighborhood, for almost 8 years now. Most of the people I see on bikes around here are heading to downtown, or to the city, and come home after work/errands. Bike racks around here would go unused and would likely get vandalized.

Unfortunately I left my phone at home yesterday or I would have taped the astounding lack of traffic on Newark Ave at 6:30pm. I actually walked the entire block without having a single car drive the street in either direction.

Lots of cars on Grove, some cars making the turn on to Erie. Not a single vehicle driving that stretch of Newark.

Funny you should say this, moobycow. I had a similar experience yesterday at 4:15 PM. I was driving back from work, and did make the turn onto Newark from Grove, and was immediately struck by the COMPLETE and UTTER lack of traffic on Newark. Not a single car moving on that stretch besides mine. I thought about coming on here to point that out, as well, but then remembered/realized that the people clamoring against this change will not listen to any voice or reason. Even when confronted with proof of something, she will refuse to believe it. If I had the time and inclination, I would park myself on the corner of Grove and Newark, and count (and video tape) the traffic flow. I am sure it is VERY, VERY little. Alas, I have a job (and, a life) and can't be bothered.

The city should just hire two or three people to do car counts (and, possibly record their flow) at that corner, over the span of several days. I am sure the results will back up what we are saying.

So, so true, JCbiscuit!

As for the others justifying the behavior, I can see why some people want to carry backpacks to work, but taking them off upon entering a train is plain, basic courtesy. There is no justification to keep them on in a crowded train.

WHY IS THIS SO HARD?!

Re: To JC Bikers Who Ride on Sidewalks...

It's not just about the law... it is about courtesy and regard for others. Yesterday, some ghetto trash was bike riding in LSP, on Freedom Way, against traffic, in the middle of the lane. Oncoming traffic was being forced to slow down and hit the brakes to allow him to get around vehicles. That's just being an asshat.

All over downtown this weekend, saw people riding against traffic on the lanes. Doing a half job will prove to be problematic long term. As more people continue to ride the wrong way on these lanes, they will become accustomed to doing so, and once the lanes are actually finished it will be too late, as they will continue to ride the wrong way.

Folding bikes are allowed at all times (if folded). The restriction applies to "standard frame" bikes.

Also, it wasn't an employee that was attacked. It was a police officer. I saw the video yesterday (it was posted online on Facebook, under the guise of police brutality) and it clearly shows the police instructing/ordering these idiots to get off the train and them refusing to comply, and then you can clearly see the dude rush one of the officers. I hope they throw the book at the two lowlifes for their antics and utter lack of respect for rules and law enforcement.

Based on what I am seeing, I would only expect the opposite. The extra capacity being added is priced higher and higher, leading to an overall rise in rents for all of DTJC. The additional housing stock (supply) is not going to lead to lower rents because the demand (people being priced out of Manhattan, or Brooklyn, plus new arrivals to the area) has continued to rise.

At the risk of coming across as pedantic, can we please start using the right word? You don't peak into a window, you peek into it.

peak
noun \?p?k\
: the pointed top of a mountain
: a tall mountain with a pointed or narrow top
: something that looks like a pointed top of a mountain

peek
verb \?p?k\
: to look at someone or something secretly especially from a hidden place
: to look at something briefly
: to show slightly
: to be slightly visible
