Terrified mom was punched during robbery; two convicted

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

A Jersey City man faces up to 25 years in prison and his sidekick faces up to 20 after being convicted in a robbery in which a Downtown woman was punched in the face as she lay in bed with her young children, officials said.

A jury deliberated only two hours on Thursday before convicting Jersey City residents Fredrick Robinson, 42, of Dales Avenue, and Clyde Heath, 39, of Bergen Avenue, of first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit burglary, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Troiano said.

Heath was also convicted of second-degree burglary, Troiano said, adding that Robinson was also convicted of unlawful use of a credit card, both in connection with the Jan. 31, 2008 attack on the woman, her 10-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son.

"It was an incredibly emotional case," said Troiano. "It was a horrible, traumatic experience for them."

The men broke into the Downtown home while the man of the house was away on business and found the mother in bed with the two children, Troiano said.

The men ordered the mother and two kids to cover their faces with the blanket. When the mother eventually uncovered her face, she was punched in the face, Troiano said.

The woman then led Robinson downstairs and handed over her purse while the girl tried to call 911 but had to hang up before connecting after Heath heard her and ran back to the bedroom, Troiano said.

The robbers fled but Robinson was spotted on surveillance video using a credit card stolen from the home at a gas station at the Junction, officials said.

Robinson, who was described as a heroin addict, had 21 prior arrests and 10 convictions. He was in prison from April 19, 2002 to March 28, 2005 and from April 19, 2002 to Aug. 5, 2007 on burglary convictions, state corrections records say.

Heath, aka Clyde Bowens, was in prison from Aug. 14, 1998 to Oct. 10, 2003 and March 2, 2005 to Oct. 7, 2006 on convictions for aggravated assault and two weapons offenses, state corrections records say.

They will be sentenced on Jan. 29 by Superior Court Judge Joseph V. Isabella.

Hey JC old-timer?s remember some of the places that were torn down to make way for the NEW Path tower/plaza?

- Robinson?s restaurant on the corner over by the Stanley.
- Orange Julius over by the Concourse. Yummy!!!
- Woolworths. (5 and 10?)
- Universal Supermarket...I can still smell and see those chickens roasting and it was directly across from the drunks stewing on their bar stools in the Tube Bar. My mother use to make us cover our eyes (and ears) when we walked past the Tube Bar.

Also over by the back of PATH there was a whole neighborhood of beautiful 2 family homes that were demolished. Progress!!(??)

Talk of a "new" JS had been going on for the last 40 years. When I was a kid they did start and took people's properties to build some of the buidlings you see today. People didn't have a voice back then the city just came in and took your property. Another plan was to cover over the JS railroad cut and build on it. Also to extend Broadway Ave. all the way up to JS. Never happened but scared a lot of oldtimers worrying if their house would be taken next.

Here is a good link to the "new" JS ...I hope they can put it off!!

Just think it took them forever to work out a deal to get the Hotel On The Square property comdemed. A family
The Tawils owned roughly 80 percent of the properties on the block adjacent to the PATH Transportation Center. They were not going without a fight.

Pretty sure they are new state traffic camera?s. I see they just put them up along rt 287 down by Edison. The NJ DOT web site is pretty sharp. You click on a camera (red dot) and you see live images.

Interesting you can even request a log from a camera. They keep them for seven days. Comes in handy if needed for an accident investigation.

This is the web site.

PS - if you click on 440 and don't see JC...if you didn't know there is a rt 440 down by edison and also in JC. Can't wait to see JC's!!

Mystery solved!!

The elves were hard at work last night. This morning I saw they placed two cameras on top of the massive pole/tower on Communipaw and 440. The cameras do resemble the Cyclops eye on the Martian war machines steel shaft. But we all know that Martian war machines only have one eye per shaft. So all of the good citizens of JC are safe from the Martians. It?s just the politicians we need to watch out for.

Smile BIG brother is watching. (at least along 440)

Side note: did anyone go down to the new War of the Worlds set at the end of Bayonne when they were filming it? I can?t get over how they built that gas station just for the movie and then ripped it down a few weeks later. Nice Hollywood magic in our own backyard. I tried to get a piece of it but was yelled at by security. Bummer!!

Cheers!!

I don?t care if city/county/state property is being used for government surveillance camera?s that?s at least for the good of the city/county/state. (yes someone along the line is probably getting their palm greased i.e - family friend is the contractor, etc ) Fighting crime or moving traffic along is always a good thing. I would ?kick? in a few extra bucks to see more cameras. (no pun intended) Especially if I owned a Ferrari and a 100K watch.

It kills me to think that city/county/state property might be used for nasty billboards or wireless receptors. I don?t want to see them messing up my beautiful Jersey City skyline. (again no pun intended) Hey but if they are those new fangled changing billboards ..I might be able to live with them...they are cool!

I saw 4 poles? you figure the current kickback rate is around $5K . That?s 4 times $5K ?$20K not bad to just sign a permit.

I was also thinking maybe the poles are for that County wide early warning system. But I thought that was already in place.

“War of the Worlds” towers in JC????

Does anyone know the purpose of the huge metal poles going up at the entrances to JC? If you ride along 440 they are at: the Bayonne city line, Communipaw Ave. , and the Charlotte Circle. (I think there is also one across from the Wilson Carpet man)

I am hoping they are for surveillance cameras (traffic) and not for cheesy billboards or wireless receptors. If they are not for surveillance cameras I wonder who is getting the kickback?

My son swears they are some sort of ?War of the Worlds? towers popping up out of the chromium contaminated soil of JC. You never see anyone working on them but the next day you will see more and more brackets and connectors on them?hmmmm
