Re: Parking Too Close to Crosswalks
Home away from home
Home away from home

Even if you made the fines upwards of $1,000.00, nothing will change. In the end, the worst abusers are cops, or their friends/relatives/spouses. As such, they are "untouchable" and the Parking Authority will not ticket them. I am always surprised/disappointed by all the cars you see parked illegally on the corners of 2nd and Newark, and Bay and Newark. Over on Bay, you have the Keyhole Bar, next to the JCFD fire station. Always cop cars, or cars with the police badges affixed to the windshield, parked illegally on the "no parking" white lines/zones.

As a follow-up for anyone else in our same situation, I confirmed with the Department of Public Works that the majority of the City's sidewalks in residential areas are, in fact, the responsibility of the property owners.

All work needs to be permitted through the DPW, Traffic Division. The fee is generally $10 - $15 (via check), and I have been told that it's a check the box type of permit process.

The permit fee may be only $10 - $15, but don't forget to factor in the costs you WILL incur in getting the requisite off-duty police detail.

This is quite the fallacy. Drug users, especially those indulging in "hard" drugs can often be quite the risk to others. Sometimes, people will shoot up or get high and then get in a car and drive. Other times, they will experience hallucinations and will act out or erratically. They are also, sometimes, hurting themselves to the point that they need to be taken to hospitals to be treated for overdoses, etc. That represents a cost shared by all taxpayers.

Now, if you want to buy some weed, and smoke it in the confines of your home, go ahead. It's not for me, but I don't have a problem with others indulging.

I've actually been impressed with the amount FOL has accomplished, within the limitations imposed by their landlord (the city). That said, I only know about it because of the recent posts on their website detailing their renovation work, which has only been actively updated since this whole Fulop RFP situation.

When I talk to people involved in the art scene in JC, and lots of downtown residents, few have any idea who FOL is or what they do. ESPECIALLY the younger contingent (under 40) who are very politically active and largely voted for Fulop. If FOL had the kind of social media engagement they have now, but starting 5 years ago, they would have had potentially 10K+ supporters comprised of the most politically active citizens of JC instead of the ~2K signing their petition. A real missed opportunity.

I think my stance at this point is that the FOL are technically correct about their lease, but too much public perception is that they are ineffectual and disorganized or people have no idea who they are. And many of those people who have no opinion or a negative opinion of them are siding with Fulop because he has a history of supporting the arts in downtown (judging the 4th st arts cook offs, etc.).

The FOL has been at this for 10+ years. When they started they had a decent sized volunteer group which has dwindled down to a handful. You never find more than a couple of people there at any given time. It is sad but if the Loew's is to attain any type of status, the big dogs have to be brought in.

And there were a heck of a lot less than 50 events they say they hold a year.

Exactly right. The amount of volunteers right now is small, mostly because the vast majority of them are turned off, or disappointed, with the way things are done. FOL has failed miserably at managing the Loew's. Did they save the theater from demolition? YES. Does that entitle them to a lifetime of overseeing the (mis)management of the theater? Heck no! If only the FOL had made HALF THE EFFORT in the past to advertise and succeed at their goals, as they are now putting into convincing people they are entitled to the management of the theater, things may not have come to this.

How hard is it for the FOL to go on all the local forums/BBS (such as JCLIST) to advertise/post about upcoming movie showings? That's an easy win. I have been to those showings and they are ALWAYS sparsely attended. Pretty disappointing.

As for them claiming 50 events/days not being enough... WOW! I doubt they even hold 30 events per year.

Who would have guessed it? OT hours at the Port Authority are up, again. Most interestingly is that actual OT is down IF YOU EXCLUDE two departments: Aviation and PATH. The PA is claiming that, among other things, increased service during the Skyway closure has led to this increase in OT. Do we actually have increased service? I have avoided the PATH on weekends this year given the mess and widespread delays being reported by others.

This. EXACTLY. Cable locks are next to useless. They are normally easier to pick, and the cables themselves are super easy to cut with any decent bolt cutter.

As for people walking by and not saying or doing anything, don't be too quick to judge them. Sometimes, people may see something and not realize they are witnessing a crime in progress. Most people (perhaps naively) assume that the person fussing with the lock is an owner whose keys are not working well, or he is otherwise having problems trying to unlock the chain.

Ready to have your mind blown? Watch as Casey Neistat "steals" a bunch of bikes ALL OVER the city without nary an issue: Bike Thief 2012. It's a pretty funny video, given how over the top is the whole premise.

Re: Want to 'kill white people,' says Jersey City man arrested trying to cut through funeral procession

Kencares beat me to it. I am not exactly sure why some people are genuinely surprised at the breadth and depth of antipathy from certain communities towards the "establishment" (or, as is often expressed nowadays, "the man"). The proof of this is in the recurrent issues of riots where a seemingly unrelated event triggers widespread riots and looting.

Right or wrong, many in the black community (as well as in other impoverished communities, or historically disadvantaged communities) feel they have been abused and oppressed for far too long, and they are seething with resentment and hatred towards those they perceive as having perpetuated the abuse.

I often hear things from people in poor communities that are truly astounding (and, honestly, quite sad) and these are often communicated to their kids (overtly, or implicitly) and so it is an attitude that is carried on from generation to generation.

This ties in with the other thread about the fired reporter that is mired in a discussion about poverty, personal responsibility, etc. In the end, the fact remains that there is an underlying current of resentment, and hatred, and it is seething and ready to blow up.

Correct, and perfectly legal. When a bike lane is obstructed by anything, you may leave it and go around the obstruction, then return to the bike lane once past it. Don't forget to signal, just like a car changing lanes.

And, yet, if a policeman is having a bad day, he may stop you and ticket you for failing to use the bike lane. Check out the Casey Neistat parody video after he was stopped (and, ticketed!) by an NYPD officer for leaving a bike lane that was obstructed (wait for it...) by the officer's patrol car.

This is a common misconception. For whatever reason(s), a lot of people think that the local/regional real estate market is now "out of the woods" and that there aren't any distressed properties in the foreclosure process. Nothing could be further from the true. In fact, NJ has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. Part of the problem is that the state laws don't allow for a speedy foreclosure process, so properties that enter the foreclosure process take over 3 years (on average) to complete the process. That's a LONG time, and it is only delaying the inevitable in the vast majority of cases, if not all. If anything, two or three year from now will be the optimal time to snatch up properties on the cheap!

Ugh! This just shows the short-sightedness and small-mindedness of so many old-timers in JC. Bike lanes bring SO MANY benefits to neighborhoods and the city at large. Calmer traffic, more street presence of neighbors, less reliance in cars (think reduced asthma incidence, less pollution, etc) and improved overall health of citizens. This also reminds me of the Hasidim opposition to bike lanes in Williamsburg. Under the guise of religion, they opposed bike lanes because women were riding in "immodest" clothing through "their" neighborhoods. Some of them took to the streets at night and (illegally) removed bike lanes. The city ended up kowtowing to them by removing some lanes and rerouting others. Let's hope the government of JC can stick to its guns and keep the lanes in place.

I can say this: the few times I have taken the light rail in the mornings to connect with PATH trains, it is ALWAYS MOBBED. You have to pack yourself into the trains. 45,000 riders per day sounds too low.

I ride during the morning from 10 AM and then about 12:30 PM and then again from 7-9 PM. Its never crowded, no high school students and usually a smooth ride. I guess when you are you traveling rush hours you can expect it to be crowded. When I first started commuting on it back in 2011 it was mostly teens, now I am seeing more adults each year I live here.

Agreed. Outside of regular morning commute hours, the light rail is actually pleasant. It is the morning rush hour, as well as in the evenings, around 6- 7 PM, that it can get incredibly crowded. And, when you add the rowdy teens, it is actually not at all pleasant. But, I think it is incredible that it has succeeded to the point where it has become such an important piece in the regional public transportation picture. Entire areas of JC and Bayonne are developing (and gentrifying) thanks to nearby light rail stations

Hi NewtoJCGirl - I just purchase the standard 2 zone pass, there is no specific type. It doesn't state that it covers the Light Rail but I found out from the agent I purchase my pass from. I was buying the 1 zone pass, which only covers Jersey City & 1 stop in Hoboken & Secaucus. The 2 zone pass was $18 dollars more so I asked what that got me & that's when I found out it included all of Hudson County plus the Light Rail.

The NJT website is terrible for finding information, such as what you describe above, but there is a little snippet in this link (http://www.njtransit.com/var/var_serv ... ageAction=HBLR8thStreetTo) that states the same thing as what you wrote. Scroll all the way to the bottom and the last paragraph corroborates that a "2-zone or greater monthly bus pass" is valid for light rail travel.

Now, my way of rebelling is to offer my ticket - if there's still time left on it - to someone on the platform when I get off. I've noticed others doing the same or leaving their valid tickets in one of the ticket vending machines.

Two comments/reactions to your post:

- Two wrongs don't make a right. Your passing on the ticket to someone is actually working AGAINST YOURSELF. As more people beat the system and "fare jump" the costs remain the same, or higher, but the revenue is flat or lower. Long term, that's an untenable situation.

- Tickets are valid for ONE continuous trip. It doesn't matter if the "ticket police" are aware if this, or not. That's the stated rule. It has been argued right here on JCList in the past, and yes, someone always points out that police/agents checking tickets do not enforce that, but that doesn't mean you should exploit their ignorance or dereliction of duty. As a good citizen, and as a user of the HBLR system, that *knows better* you should try and use the system as designed. See my first point above: the more people game the system, or refuse to pay for their trips, the more reason NJT has to increase fares.

If that is your PROOF that closing Newark Avenue would lead to some major issues, you have FAILED miserably. The fact is that the stretch of Newark being considered for a pedestrian plaza sees very little traffic. Try again.
