CONSUMER WARNING: Check your data usage on cell phone/wireless account

A friend sent me this e-mail:

CONSUMER WARNING: Check your cell phone bills for $9.99 data usage charges that look like cell phone general costs. Learned from Verizon an independent party txting me "updates" I haven't requested started charging my cell number. Verizon WON'T take responsibility. I contacted this company My Mobile Care and they say I answered a pop up ad by inputting my cell number & small print says they can charge me $9.99/month. THIS DID NOT OCCUR. Txt's look random! They make it difficult to get a credit and Verizon suggests taking it up with Consumer Affairs.

Dangling cable wires on sidewalks everywhere
Home away from home
Home away from home

Along 5th, 4th Street and Jersey Ave. and several other streets I walk my dog I've noticed these dangling loose wires from the electrical poles or even attached on wires between the poles. People have obviously tried to resolve the eye sore and hazard by wrapping feet and feet of the wire around phone poles or rolled up on the ground like a hose and some wires just dangle hitting the cars parked or are in the foot path of pedestrians.

I've had two like that on my street and originally thought it was a live wire. PS&G told me they are probably tv cables and to phone the cable company to remove - which cable company? I'd be calling everyone. I posted to the city and the fire department came by and rolled it like a hose and placed it on a tree branch. Which drooped until it eventually fell again and the tip of it has metal attachments that hit my car everytime I park out front.

It looks like sh*t and makes our streets look like a slum. Who do we contact to really get this stuff gone?

Re: JC Post Office - Be Very Afraid

I have had two items to be mailed to my address within a 6 week period - carrying $50 gift cards for Home Depot (redeemed from my credit card rewards points) not ever make it to my address. I contacted the credit card company and they informed me that they have had issues often with gift cards making it to their destination through the USPS. They've tried to have the envelope be non-descript in order to not trigger the postal workers to know they are gift cards, however, the credit card company stated the best recommendation is to redeem my points in cash, to be mailed in the form of a check from them, to avoid this issue.

I find it no coincidence my regular postal carrier (who I love and who I tip during the holidays) was away on medical leave during this time. All of a sudden all my missing weekly magazine subscriptions (Sports Illustrated, New York Magazine, The New Yorker) are showing up in my mail box again.

Be careful - obviously this credit card company is looking in to it, but if you want to be vigilant yourself - don't do gift cards through the mail.

Anyone with basement flooding experience know how long it typically takes for the wet basement smell to revert back to pre-flood levels?

We've got fans and dehumidifiers going nonstop and the smell is barely going away at all. All the wet stuff was hauled out within a few days of Irene.

Pine Sol has only masked the smell for a day or so. Any thoughts on other strategies? Thanks...

Maybe try these strategies we used:

Change your HVAC filter. You can also find scent filter additions to add to your filter if you feel the need to buy some time between ridding yourself of the mildew. Orange scent seems to be the least repulsive.
Open all windows & doors in household to circulate out as much as you can as long as you can.
Buy Damp Rid.

Taking a step further...if we had police cuts would you hire your own security force? If the sidewalk was ripped up in front of your stoop, would you pay to fix it? If the street Lamps were out, do you climb up and change them?

I'll continue to protect my home to the best of my ability until it works no more. I also improve my back alley and my front sidewalks, the tree out front and I have a Fort Knox security system with cameras, so I guess the answer is yes with the exception of reaching the street light, but we do have security lights.

I see that certain parts of JC flood constantly. Instead of eternally waiting on the City to do something (which ain't gonna happen), I think homeowners should be much more proactive.

Why not build 3-4 feet high brick walls with glass/steel gates that ca seal out water so that water doesn't pour in from the streets/sidewalks whenever they flood and then have smaller 1' high brick around the entry steps to keep out that water.

I agree, fix your own home as much as possible. Make it Fort Knox, do overkill for your own peace of mind. Spend the money. It's cheaper in the long run for resell value (you can say you didn't flood in those heavy rainstorms) and you don't have to pay for repairs over and over, regardless of insurance. It's never one thing, it's all variables that contribute from table water, high tide, full moon, neighbors not being as diligent as you, and all the other city dysfunctions - you don't have control over those things, but you DO have control over your own home.

I had a PS&G "rep" visit my property last year and stated it required an inspection and had tried to be in touch with me several times during building of property. The building of the property was three years EARLIER by a builder prior to selling to my family. When I challenged the "inspector" he said they had "tried" to inspect during building but no one was there to let them in. I asked the guy why is he coming several years after construction and he said he left request to inspect, when pressed that I never received anything in the past three years he stated, "I think we tried knocking, maybe left a sticky on the door". I never received anything AND he should have inspected PRIOR to completion & purchase. I asked why he thinks I should be letting him in after we've bought after the fact?

He stood there like a bafoon and I knew he expected a pay off by the way he was waiting there hemming and hawing...I wasn't about to pay off this jerkoff for not doing his job. I stood there speechless and he left. He's tried TWICE to come back in two and a half years to "re-inspect" aka "pay off my hot tub in the catskills" and I've ignored the calls and he's never come back. BTW, the "problem" he stated was a problem (he tried to say the height of our utility room left some inches for the PS&G guy to have to arch in order to see the top of the meter) is "fixed" with a step. You PS&G douche.

Just another guy hoping the momentary anxiety and grief he gives you results in a tip aka pay off for him. It's true Jersey City fashion. Empty your wallet to make things easier is their hope. Again, I pay off enough of the city to get sick and tired by the time these jerk-offs come around.

If only this petty energy was moved towards good in our community. Volunteer your time instead of paragraphs upon paragraphs of negative energy and explicit, yawning detail of your negative experiences. In fact, why not buy taco's from your favorite place and drop them off at the local shelter? It'll make you feel like a million bucks.

Re: Security System Recommendations?
Home away from home

Be cautious of ADT Pulse. Had it installed and then all service disappeared. Continued to be looped through phone system when part of the new system didn't work properly. I logged over 90 minutes of on-holds, transferring, leaving messages just to get to a human voice that new what they were talking about. Six weeks later and we're still dealing with the issue. The initial sales guy was all promises but all but disappeared during the problems, e-mailing but never returning a call when it came to a crisis.

They are growing too large to handle the service, the technicians are still learning this new system and the sales person drops you once they make their commission. By the time they got around to paying attention to us and the issue we had been through so many people, phone systems, voice mails & emails and had to seriously make a stink about it not working right, it wasn't worth the cost of the system.

It sounds like a great system until you need someone to help you with it. What will happen when someone breaks in? We're debating taking the whole thing out and starting again.

Bravo to the idiot city workers (or contract workers, whoever) who were too lazy to remove the grasses that were over the curb. There are streets we walked by this morning that have painted red grass that was growing over the curb, lift up the grass? Bare, unpainted curb. I'll make sure to pay attention to that hot red crab grass.

I once had a contractor recommended to me to do trash removal. The friend who uses him on projects told me his usual quote and it seemed reasonable. He walked through my house to the back and said, "For others it's $x, for you it's $x plus $50 because you look like you can afford it.". Dead Serious. Am I at fault because my wife knows how to decorate kick ass on a small budget? Here's hoping the appraisers overlook this illusion and see the warped and buckled floors instead.

All I want is a coffee shop that recognizes coffee is the point and makes it half decent. A station that has cream, milk and all the things we need to put our coffee together that isn't a complete afterthought and consistent hours so when I go to support it, it's open when the hours on the door say it will be. That, my friends, is all I ask!

I walked past this woman's place - it appears as though the suggestion it is this woman could be possible (just look at the yard). I took photos but really, what am I to do with them other than have her SEE me take photos so she stops these shenanigans?

I have no proof but if someone does, please do us a favor and politely call the non-emergency police line. Yes, they have many better crimes to solve, but in talking to my neighbors it may very well be a little, odd epidemic she'll continue and if she's ill, perhaps her children can sternly warn her she isn't doing those of us around Hamilton who are trying to improve our 'hood any favors.

I once witnessed a car break in outside my home. I was so vigilant watching every move several weeks after than when I noted a person loitering around a vehicle, peering in etc., I shouted "I wouldn't do that if I were you!" and pointed to my phone staying I had them on speed dial to the cops. Lo and behold a woman walks out from behind the car with a leash...and a dog...who was peeing on the tree beside the car. She was merely peering in at her reflection of what appears to have been her OWN car, they are, in fact neighbors. Sigh.

You walked past my well chained flower pots outside my house. The ones my child and I planted ourselves. "Why the chains Daddy?".

You placed your hands in the pots and scooped out the geraniums. Awesome. I can just see your undignified, and likely very ugly mug walking down the sidewalk dropping dirt as you head off to your house to plant the $4.99 flower in your own garden. But I just can't imagine you having your own garden, that takes pride. You must have given it to someone whose pants you wanted to get in to. "Why would someone take our plants Daddy?". "Because son, there are low life's who are so cheap they would steal your two front teeth if they thought the tooth fairy was real." Shit. Now I have to explain that yes the tooth fairy is real and that no, no douche is going to rob you for your teeth.

I don't want to argue each thread and dilute the message I wanted to make that as a taxpayer with a small child in this area I'd like to see more vehicles stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Regardless of the intelligence of a pedestrian, or a driver, for that matter - it's the law.

Pedestrians gotta look up and be part of the dance, and not just think they're 100% right at all times.

I'm not referring to the severe metropolitan chaos of Time Square and PATH/Hoboken or other crazy intersections such as that where the use of a police officer to navigate could come in handy. There are many, many examples in this city where a vehicle can wait for a pedestrian to cross (Jersey Ave. anyone?), where they do not.

Like I said, I stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. I shouldn't have to slam on my brake for someone who wasn't even on the curb when I am approaching the crosswalk, who decides to run into traffic because they are stupid or have a deathwish.

And btw, I have kids too. I stop at the curb and look both ways before I cross the street. I do not think that my stroller is a device to stop oncoming traffic. I don't cross unless I have a light and even then I stop at the curb and I make sure that it's safe before I cross the street. I also never enter the crosswalk until I know that I can actually cross the street.

To assume that drivers are always the discourteous ones in this city 100% of the time is ridiculous. Have you seen some of the people in this city walking around like they don't give a crap if a car is coming or not? Walking against lights? In the middle of the street? I stop for buses, I stop for pedestrians, I stop for a family of geese! I never "block the box" and I drive the speed limit. I am a courteous driver and a safe pedestrian.

I will admit that there are a lot of crap drivers out there too, but just as there are a lot of crap drivers, there are a lot of crap pedestrians.

I hear what you're saying and that makes sense Snowflake20. I just say irregardless if there are jerk-off pedestrians, if they are at a crosswalk preparing to walk, let's stop for them - which you tell me you do. It's what other civilized communities do. I am sure if that starts happening more regularly pedestrians will trust if they cross at a crosswalk they'll get across and hopefully they'll act with more civility in return. When I visit my hometown I wouldn't dare j-walk - it leaves gasps on driver's faces, it's shunned upon - because WHY do you need to j-walk when there are crosswalks everywhere that are safe?

Other cities are well trained in the civility of letting a pedestrian cross. It's the law. Why are we different?

It doesn't matter if it takes you 10 more minutes to get to work letting a dozen pedestrians at a dozen crosswalks cross. It is civil, it's the law, it's the thing to do. If you don't like waiting, find another route. What a great city it would be if we were that civil to one another instead of seeing what we can get away with.

And if you make the argument pedestrians needs to do their job first and cross correctly or whatever the argument will be on this thread that pedestrians have to do their part. Nope. Cars are BIG. Cars are HEAVY. Cars can kill. Let the cars start being polite and letting people cross. We can teach our pedestrians after, why? Because then they are still ALIVE to learn how.

I always stop for pedestrians when they are on the curb and trying to cross the street. However, I've seen people cross streets not on the cross walk, cross against the light on a busy street and then jump off of the curb without looking up from their phones. You are supposed to look both ways before you cross the street! We learned this in Kindergarten.

I drive through DT JC and Hoboken often and I can't tell you how many times I've had to slam on my brake because some idiot who wasn't anywhere near the curb while I entered the intersection, walks into the crosswalk without looking up. If a car is already approaching the crosswalk that doesn't mean you can run from the sidwalk and jump off the curb into the intersection to cut off a car! Look up and stop before you cross the street!

They still have the right of way regardless if they are idiots or not. Don't adhere to j-walkers, but adhere to those crossing at a legal pedestrian crosswalk. Phones in hand, blindfolded, walking backwards, those with a skip in their step, a gaggle of teens walking .000008 mph, they legally have the right of way. They are soft targets, cars are hard targets. You hit 'em, you pay, not the other way around.

Fine. I'll go to jail but at least I'll still be alive.

Wow. The lack of civility to prove a point on this board is always at the expense of having fruitful interaction to move forward as a thriving community. I say let it start with YOU. And what make is your car so I can make certain my child and I aren't trying to cross the street when you are driving.
