Re: HUGE GAS LINE COMING? Companies look to run natural gas pipeline through Jersey City

There are billions of dollars of real estate and infrastructure at stake here, not to mention the lives and health of thousands of people. Where are Trump, Lefrak, MacK Cali, Conrail, Homeland Security, Port Authority on this? Is the Turnpike Authority in on this with a gasline under the Bayonne extension?

We should demand an insurance policy/bond similar to what BP has had to set up because of the Gulf -- a fund/bond for billions. That will eat up the cost savings for them of such a reckless idea, if the cost was to go up they will not want to do this. And this is not even for the residents HERE. Just take a look at recent explosions in CT, TX and of course the mess in the Gulf.

Well he can count on one LESS vote when he runs again. We need national donor charts to show exactly HOW MUCH these guys get from their corporate contributors before the elections. Or, as Jim Hightower suggested, they should have to wear the logos (like Nascar drivers) of every corporate interest they took money from.

After seeing these presentations of where the pipeline would run, isn't this a MAJOR security risk?
The main path line from Newark and JSQ, the turnpike, the approach to the Holland Tunnel, a frequently used freight line all VERY close to this thing. Why don't they just put a big bullseye on the thing? The whole trade center rebuild was stopped because they thought the building was too close to the West side highway. So, NJ's population doesn't even get considered here?

This whole route plan also shows ignorance of the importance of the infrastructure for the whole metropolitan area. Instead of spending money on this technology that is can be dangerous, we need to put this towards sustainable energy and jobs for people here. What is the Port Authority's take on this, along with the Turnpike's? So far as I know the PA does't pay taxes so if something did happen, guess who will get the bill?

"The blast happened near Chandler, which is about 45 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. Flames whipped by northerly winds could be seen shooting into the air"

Yeah, let's have a nice big fat gasline through one of the most densely populated cities in the NorthEast.
WHAT are these people using for brains???

Has anyone planned on tactics if they try a "this is too crowded -- I am calling the Fire Marshall, or the police bla bla bla "--
Didn't someone try that last time?
There are capacity limits on rooms. How many people can fit in that room? What will happen if the limit is reached, ie can they stand in the hall (or is there a law?) etc.

I am with you and Fulop on this. This is for NYC NOT
the taxpayers of Jersey City and Bayonne. We need to be more adamant about WHAT'S IN IT FOR US here and if our representatives don't represent OUR interests they need to be replaced. If it's not enough compensation for the majority of the people here, the gas co. needs to be told TAKE A HIKE. Route it through Staten Island, a part of NYC.

I used to walk to work at a school on Kennedy Blvd. The traffic at 8:15 AM at the corner of Montgomery was completely nuts, yet there was a female crossing guard out in the middle of it, waving away, directing cars and students..A MUCH braver soul than I.
We have a crossing guard in my neighborhood and she knows everyone, and a lot of the kids by name. Before and after school, having an adult around is a good thing for the children and the neighborhood.

Hi,
Today, Saturday, September 19 there has been a strong odor of paint or some kind of thinner chemical in the air. I live on the Island and the smell made me go inside. I am not sure if it is coming from the Path yard or from the West but it is a really noxious odor. Anyone else out there gettiing this? It was around this morning and then started up again late this afternoon

"The Port Authority needs to acknowledge that the PATH has not been 100% reliable, as further evidenced by their willingness to shut down the WTC station during weekends to allegedly speed up the construction schedule on other projects there."

The closure of the WTC station on weekends is a looming NIGHTMARE for users of the Path. It's already slow motion and packed. Wait until everyone has to sit in HOBOKEN with one less line open on the weekends. We got a fare hike and told we would get new cars and better service. The cars often dirty now and there are almost constant delays on the midtown line. I don't see any new cars and it's almost into April. .
I think the ferry should be kept going as an alternate route. It might need management changes or restructuring but I'd rather see money go to mass transport methods instead of the use of more gas and cars.

I agree with you. A lot of the situation with the mentally ill is due to cuts at the state and federal level. This is NOT something that can be handled by an emergency room by local hospitals - they are already overburdened.

Just yesterday I heard Dick Cheney is ready to have a billion dollars sent to Georgia. NOT Georgia USA, but overseas What the hell is this???After the mess of Katrina which is STILL not cleaned up these guys take OUR money and give it away to foreign countries (and it remains to be seen if this aid actually trickles down to the people who might need it).

We need to elect people who will promote the interests of the citizens of THIS country. We have huge looming problems of healthcare, infrastructure decay, joblessness (if they say 6.1 you KNOW it is DOUBLE that). Mental healthcare is something that needs more support at the federal level, having patients wandering the streets, hoping they take their meds, expecting the familes (who are already stressed out with the situation) or social workers to keep track of them is setting EVERYONE up for failure.

You have a good point. I always thought the rebate was a stupid idea. Why not just CUT the tax rate? Well, it must make a nice job(s) for the state to oversee this rebate... Issuing a check takes a ton of transactions and oversight.

I agree with GrovePath Why aren't we looking at EVERYTHING the state spends before money is yanked away from education? This whole thing sounds like a rob peter to pay paul to me. Sure money can be saved and things be made more efficient to cut waste in the BOE but the State was in charge for a long time. The report they issued on JC was like the fox reporting on the chicken coop.
Grove is right. What about all these towns, with hands in the state till? What are there like 600? I heard an economic report last night that the three major employers in this country are now:
Services, Healthcare and GOVERNMENT

The Newark/Jersey City area is a major hub of the movement of goods and commerce for the whole state, we have problems these smaller communities don't because of the size of the population, density, environment, and infrastructure that supports the tri state area.

I have written in this forum about the chaos on Newark Avenue. Either it's at a dead stop or a speedway that could rival Indianapolis... with at least 4 schools in this area it is a hazard for everyone. And it's not just downtown. There is NO light or safe place to cross between about Brunswick to past Dickenson High School.
I wrote to the police, the mayor, my councilman and nothing has ever been done. Even after Mrs. Edith Skupien was killed NOTHING has been done. The only time there was any police presence was when the construction under the turnpike was being started. I suggest everyone remind the "elected officials" seeking re election to start taking care of present business in the city.
I have written to the State Dept. of Transportation and got a reply from Kris Kolluri, Commissioner that "Newark Avenue is
a local road and falls under the jurisdiction of Jersey City". You can quote this when someone says "it's not our job".

I can attest to the STENCH from the garbage trains that are sometimes parked near the Journal Square Path train on the Conrail tracks. It is so bad sometimes it can make you gag. The residents of Jersey City deserve better than to have to put up with NYC's garbage too.
NYC's got a big problem with stacking millions of more residents who produce tons more of garbage. It's should not get dumped on Jersey City. Why NOT train it to upstate NY? What's that? NY real estate is "too valuable" for that???

In an aggravting hunt this past Saturday to find out why the water went out in our neighborhood, I found this little detail in relation to United Water's parent company;
"Jersey City officials were shocked to learn last year that United Water diverted $1.2 million
worth of the city?s water to other communities in New Jersey without paying Jersey City."
This was from a letter dated May, 2005
http://www.citizen.org/cmep/Water/gen ... uez/articles.cfm?ID=13399

This is the first I heard of this, anyone know any more about it?

Re: Cars blowing through stops signs-Hamilton Park Area

Welcome to the growing chorus of citizens of JC who are trying to get CITY HALL to pick up ths issue. The lives of citizens are more important to US than any real estate deals...The CITY needs to take the lead on this.I have written about the hazards of Newark Ave. on this board (before and after a woman was killed there)
I have written to the Mayors (past and present), the Police dept) Councilmen, the state, etc.

Any area that leads to a tunnel or highway or the waterfront is a hazard to the people who actually live and pay taxes here. Everyone is getting tired of the "it's the county", "it's the state", "it's the state transportation dept" it's anything but our job...
Hamilton Park and Newark Avenue are only 2 examples of what has become a big problem for the residents of JC.
I suggest a blitz of tickets and license points on these drivers who ignore stops signs, pedestrian crossings, speed limits.
I believe the fine for a moving violation is quite high and needs to go back into the city budget for fixing streets, adding lights and if the state must do some of this this money must be used to push them into doing it . NJ is one of the worst states for pedestrians...

I did see something recently that there was an initiative for making our streets safer. The number one group of victims of dangerous drivers? School children. I think the program might have been called Safe Streets or something like that -- here's the city's chance to
get on board with the state and bring that program here. IF anyone has info on this program please contact me. Thanks.

"4. Central Park is huge, gorgeous, and a little unsafe at night. Does that mean it should be paved over and turned into condos? No. If safety is an issue, don't go to the park at night. Actually, it would be very easy to close such a park at dusk--lockable staircases with one-way exits like in subways. If you're worried about encoutering condoms, well, don't walk anywhere in JC."

I agree with you, with the "logic" some are offering we shouldn't have parks at all...
Close it at NIGHT. Most parks close down after dark anyway. If it has a bike path and walk/jog path duirng the day people will use it to get downtown (biking is something that should be encouraged around here, esp. to get around town the air around here is getting worse and worse esp at commute time).
We now have at least a half a dozen MAJOR new projects going up in this city. WHERE are these people going to go to be outside? Liberty? Lincoln? We need not only greenspace but other ways to get around here. Has anyone taken a count of how many projected new Jersey City residents we are going to have here? The Resevoir, the Embankment, Bergen Arches are not jokes to be poked fun at by some self-interested developers who won't be living here after they get what they want. THey are some of the last open space left in a city that has been without any rational civic planning.

I saw a documentary on the Bronx the other night. An interesting fact was that the South Bronx that ended up being decimated was overbuilt, then abandoned. Parks increase the value of the homes around them. YES, they have to be maintained, yes they need police, YES there are bad people around but by the logic of some, we should close Island Beach (miles of natural dune forest with a road -- this shouldn't be allowed cause it will need police. Ditto with Central Park, close it, we need more condos and while we are at it, get rid of Liberty State Park too, I'm sorry we need to put up more buildings so we can stare at Manhattan instead of getting outside and getting a life with our families.

This was after an elderly woman was KILLED on Newark Ave. If if this is not important, what the **** is in this city?

PS

My condolences to you all. She sounds like she was a great lady, the kind of person who makes your day better and this city brighter.

I think everyone should write to Councilmen Lipsky, Fulop, the county executive and the Mayor about this street. (Newark Ave.) It's not acceptable in a city this size to let this go unaddressed. There are NO places to cross this street(Newark Avenue) safely between Palisades Ave. and about 4th or 5th Street downtown. There is a crosswalk under the turnpike with a sign that is IGNORED by drivers. Please contact your elected officials and ask something be done about this.
