Does anyone have a recommendation for a dependable/honest electrician from the area? We are just looking to have some minor things done around the house, nothing major!
Thanks Everyone!

It really blows my mind that someone would dig plants out of planters and walk away with a plant in a pile of dirt.

I honestly did go walk by the 9th and Coles area looking for my stolen plant because I was so annoyed. I know there is no way that woman is seeing these posts but I really hope she stops if this was her. I truthfully didn't find my plant but I am keeping my eye out now!

Ok, now I've been hit! Someone pulled a plant out of my planter on Monmouth St.!!! It was there when I left for work and now my planter has a giant hole in it where a plant use to be! I can not believe someone would pull it out and walk away with it!

Newark Ave & 3rd St. "Redevelopment"
#34
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Over the past couple weeks, I have received a number of certified letters regarding this project. It seems that a new condo building (48 units plus retail space), will be built in this location. The letters I have gotten have been a notice of the construction project from the developers law firm notifying me (and I am assuming other residents who live relatively close to this location) about the construction and a second letter regarding their application for their flood hazard permit.

I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on this project because I am unsure exactly what I am suppose to think....I am assuming we were notified because this will impact us in some way (I am thinking parking in the area might become an issue since one of the letters indicated there are 48 units but only 9 proposed parking spaces) but I guess my question is should I really be concerned over this project? The letters indicate we have 15 days to address my concerns and was curious if any of you jclisters had any thought on this??

Thanks!!

Sound Proofing Company-Recommendations

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good sound proofing company? I have a shared wall with another row house and I can hear when my new neighbor sneezes which is not a good sign! I have read about the foam, thicker dry wall, some green glue etc. but was hoping someone might be able to recommend a good company!

Does anyone have any suggestions for a contractor/landscaper in building a ground level deck or patio? We have a small backyard with cracked cement and were thinking about building a wooden deck over it so we can actually use our outdoor space! I am not sure if I would need a landscaper or a contractor and really have no idea where to begin!

Thanks!

I appreciate the responses to my rant! Yes, I did have a receipt that had a date (a wk ago) and the total paid. Initially he said I could return, then he magically changed that to exchange, then it turned into nothing at all because "he would loose money on the deal". The harder I pushed, the harder he acted like he didn't understand my English. Thank you all for the suggestions, I normally love supporting the shops downtown but the one time I give one of these retail stores on Newark a chance it ends up screwing me! Never Again!

So yes, this is a venting session for me however, I want to send a warning to all the females on this site who like to support local business...DO NOT shop at Top Notch on Newark Ave.

My dear husband who thought was doing me a favor, picked me up a pair of rain boots that I desperately needed and instead of driving to Target thought he would support a local store. Of course, the pair he brought didn't fit quite right and he assured me the store owner told him we could return them or exchange them for another pair. OF COURSE, that was not the case.

I got the whole, no returns speech and when I kept pushing he tried to tell me my boots (still in the original plastic) were not in the same condition they were purchased. Yes, I did try them and walk around the house, but they were clean. I got every excuse in the book why I couldn't return or now exchange the $25 boots all of which went against what my husband was told.

Moral of this story, support Target, not a local store that really doesn't sell anything of quality anyway, though I am curious how they can afford the rent!

HORRIBLE! I have two neighbors next to me who do not live in their homes and are doing gut renos. They tore through the cement slabs in their houses down through the dirt. Therefore, they have lakes and feet of water that gets so high it seeps in like a running hose through the opening around my heating pipes. Last night, it was so bad the fire dept came and pumped them out since it was a major hazard. We got about 3 inches which was considerably less than it could have been. I have to give kudos to the JCFD, they were absolutely awesome to us and didn't leave until it was under control....

I use to live in Maplewood, South Orange and Orange (before coming to JC). The reverse commute isn't bad, the best option with less headaches is the turnpike/78. 1&9 to 280 in my experience though cheaper, ran more of a risk of having traffic (particularly on the return trip to JC). It is doable!

I have to give a recommendation (2nding Greenville Chick's rec) for Byron Hutchinson.

We had a frozen pipe this week and he came out the same day. He was professional, honest, inexpensive and just an overall nice guy.

I highly recommend calling him!

1 more suggestion for you....write EVERYTHING down. We use to live next to a DJ, which was a nightmare. I too, felt awful calling the cops but after awhile I just didn't care anymore because I was literally loosing sleep. I always found the cops were as helpful when they could be (when, in fact, my neighbor actually opened the door, which most often he didn't).

It got to a point where I pretty much called on a daily basis, and eventually, the DJ moved out. The cops do record when you call and you can obtain the case #'s and police reports if you do end up having to take your neighbor to court. Regardless, if they are keeping you up until 5am because of music, you really shouldn't feel bad, that's ridicilous

Agreed! I don't know where I'd go!

They actually closed all their CT locations in the past few months. Some of them reopened as Shaws Supermarkets but the one in my home town where I grew up is vacant.

Yes, I'm on Monmouth St. Same issue. And then, the next day, I have a really large amount of mail. I actually confronted the postwoman about it (we were missing some birthday cards) and she got really defensive. Its a loose loose, at least, that's what I have resigned to anyway

jerseymom...I use to be a college admission counselor at Seton Hall. I think its great you're trying to help this student, he sounds he could, and wants to go far!!!

It sounds like he has decent SATs and it really isn't too late to apply to school, he really has until Feb. to do that and still be on time. What might be tricky is if his parents are not able to help, both SHU and Rutgers, or really any school seems so expensive these days. Though all have scholarships and financial aid it's not easy to pull it all together.

I do remember the community colleges in NJ having a program I believe called STARS which would be full tuition paid for students who I believe graduated in the top 5% of their classes. I'm not sure if this program is still around but it might be worth looking in to.

If you need more info, feel free to PM me!

This just happened to me about 15 mins ago. (on monmouth). A guy with a green lanyard around his neck flashed his ID and asked to see my bill. I told him I had no idea where it was and I couldn't remember if anyone on this board determined if this was legit or not, I hadn't seen a post on this in awhile. Regardless just a heads up, I guess they are back out there again!

Re: Missing package - what to do now?

My husband and I never had problems with our mail when we rented a garden apt. but now that we have a house, things go missing all the time. Not just packages (we have lost checks, small Amazon boxes, you name it) but actual mail, (birthday cards mostly) that it became unreal. We had a hard time believing all of it was stolen from the front of our house (our mailbox is big enough for most of these things to be put into it and it locks) so I was actually put in touch with a Ferderal Agent down at the Post Office who worked on our case and someone was arrested a few months ago. If you'd like PM me and I'll send you her contact info. She was extremely helpful, more so than anyone else down at that Post Office!

I park my car in a lot right by the Music Box and as I did tonight, I cringe as I park and walk by this bar to my house. It has gotten somewhat better since it came under new management but tonight the music was loud and there were a number of people hanging out in front just staring at me as I walked home. I live near Barge/Abby's so I know what the whole bar and noise thing is like however the one thing that always stands out to me with this place is that unlike Barge which attracts the crazies on Fridays, this bar seems to have some type of situation (be it a fight, argument, loud music, whatever) every night of the week (or at least every single time I get my car). I think it actually could be worse, it never seems to be a huge crowd there but I don't know. If you have another opportunity for a place even on the next block, you might be better off than on this street itself!

I too have water coming up through the floor (again) and it seems like also through the wall that goes out to our backyard. Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done (fixing the tiles, caulking etc) that will prevent this from happening in the future? I'm not sure how big a job this could be!

I haven't had to make a claim for flood (yet) however, I know when I set my flood insurance up, we chose to cover only the structure, not personal property to keep the overall cost down. I have heard dealing with the fema thing can be difficult, I never given using it much thought...though I have 3inches in my basement coming from the wall I share with my neighbor next door so I might be having to investigate that further!

I LOVE Trader Joe's, I have been shopping there for years and I would be thrilled if they came to JC! (I did sign up on their website!). I actually went to the one in Edgewater last night...it's nice but kind of far (driving up River Rd. with all the buses can make it feel further than it really is). I have been to nicer TJ's than this one, I feel like everytime I make the trip up there they are out of stock of a lot of my favorite items!

Thanks for the suggestions! I most certainty do not want to be the difficult neighbor, its just that I don't want to be taken advantage of. (there is a house on my block that has been gutted back in August and the contractors are STILL there now, working at 9pm at night and all day on the weekends, I am terrified that this is going to happen here as well)

I am going to look into the permit situation and i intend on talking to him. If hours are 7am-6pm, than I expect him to abide by the rules (I am sure if the rolls were reversed he would feel the same!), otherwise I will be calling that office and reporting it!

Being that we share a wall does he or the town "officially" have to notify us that this construction is taking place? I am more so concerned about damage to my property and the structural integrity of my house if they are going to be working on our shared walls that obviously contain my piping!

Home Remodeling-Noise
#59
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I was wondering if anyone new the rules/laws in DT JC for home remodeling. I recently purchased a row house and we share a wall with the house next door. Our neighbor is gutting the house and I am concerned about noise. I completely understand they want to redo their house, and that I purchase a property with a shared wall but I fear that it will be demolition time next door 24hrs a day, 7days a week (he mentioned the project will take months) and I won't be able to come home after work and relax, or that I'll have to put up with it all weekend long. Being this is my house and where I live (and I am also concerned about the structural integrity of my own property being effected by this), I don't really have any other place to go to get away from it all. I found online that construction is only M-F 7am-6pm, does anyone know if this is valid?
