Re: Parking lot on 9th and Erie - door always open!

We want to know how long this is going to go on so we can decide whether or not to pull our business and give our money to another garage. This is a huge issue. All of a sudden we've gone from a secure garage, accessible only by key fob, to... door wide open. NOT OKAY.

Yes. We've been very angry about this. I complained to Silverman in late February about this, and they said it was a temporary thing while the restaurant secured other parking. Have you contacted Silverman?

One of our best friends lives in a building that Mike and his company manages. Met him once or twice. He seems to be a stand-up guy.

They showed me some places, quite a few years back, and when my then spouse and I were lukewarm, the agent said that all of the properties were good enough, and most people didn't have the luxury to be picky.

We took our picky business elsewhere.

In leaving HP for VV, we thought about that area. Felt too isolated, unsafe to both a guy and a woman (both raised in big cities), and we worried about the flooding.

r_pinkowitz: *thank you*

And to reiterate: All of us as dog owners have choices about where we leave our canine friends when we travel. Please choose a proper dog-boarding facility, like Boca's (again, other recommendations? my gf and I would love a backup).

When you board a dog in a legal establishment, chances are they're going to get proper care and exercise, in a place that's insured, legally zoned as a kennel, and in a place where they're allowed to bark.

The info about licensing is just an FYI.

Agreed. It's realistic, and Craiglist is a good bet. My gf and I pay roughly that for a 1.5-bedroom (tiny office) near Van Vorst. But you might find something with Armagno or one of the other realtors, also...

Neighbors...

When you go out of town, please use licensed facilities like Boca's to board your canine friends. (My girlfriend and I use Boca's and like them a ton ? does anyone have other recommendations for good local kennels?)

If you leave your dog with a "dog sitter" in a private home, you're most likely creating a nuisance for that dog sitter's neighbors. Your dog is going to miss you, and it's going to bark, particularly if your dog sitter stashes your dog in a spare room all day. (Which is happening, or I wouldn't be posting this. PM me if you want details.)

If Animal Control comes to investigate a barking complaint at your dog sitter's house and your dog isn't licensed, I do think your dog can be seized ? I'm sure the forum will correct me if I'm wrong on that point.

FYI: It's NJ state law that our dogs be licensed after 7 months. A lot of people I've met in the VV and HP dog runs don't know this.

WORD is a good bookstore. Happy it's coming! I think it has a shot at making it?and maybe at occasionally bringing some people from Manhattan and Brooklyn over for events?given the location, just steps from the Grove Street PATH station.

First, on the platform, there was an announcement of signal problems creating delays. Then the 33rd St train arrived and we took off. For maybe 1 minute. And then we sat for 20, during which time there were several announcements about signal troubles uptown that they were trying to fix. Finally, the conductor announced that they were unable to fix the signal problems, so they were turning us back around.

Someone attempted to break in to our apartment about a month ago (near Hamilton Park) but couldn't get past the deadbolt. And a neighbor said her bike was stolen from the basement.

People in our building keep propping the front doors open -- to get groceries from the car? I don't know what. The idiocy is maddening.

Rich's store isn't Burger King. You can't have it your way.

He has driven things to my house for me, and the other week he lent me a pricey piece of equipment for the whole weekend.

I wasn't there, so I don't know what happened to you. But when I see this thread pop back up, it's an opportunity for me to rave about the stellar customer service I've been receiving for almost eight years! Yay Rich!!

Re: NOISE! What can I do?

Just can't stay away

My girlfriend and I are in disagreement about her noisy upstairs neighbors.

First off: We agree that they suck.

But I think their level of noise is the unfortunate reality of living below people.

They're not stereo blasters... They're slammers, crashers, furniture draggers, box droppers. It goes on all day (she works sometimes from home), and it often wakes her up at 1 or 2 a.m. (through pro-grade ear plugs).

She's been there for a couple years. She's spoken to them multiple times, and left them nice (I saw them) notes. About six months ago she went to the landlord. No change. These people aren't hostile, but they seem simply not to care.

I think my gf should consider moving if she can't deal with it, because they're not blasting a stereo or TV or having loud parties. That said, I hear it when I'm there, and it's pretty crazy.

Thoughts? I worry if she keeps bitching to the landlord, it will come back to bite her at lease-renewal time.

I vastly prefer 9C to Hamilton Inn. In fact, I've given up on HI ? too expensive for what's offered, and the service is consistently lackluster. The food at 9C is tasty, and the portions are generous. The people who work there are friendly and unpretentious. I continue to wish HI well ? the renovation is lovely, and the location is great. But I go to 9C now.

The park's been open, post-renovation, for a good long time now, and the "pet free" signage is clear. So... what's with people walking their dogs in the no-dog areas?

I'm a dog owner. And I like that there are parts of the park where I can throw a blanket down and hang out, solo or with friends, with at least less expectation of dog poop in the grass.

The dog person I've seen most often with his dogs in the pet-free areas has been around for at least three or four years.

Thoughts?

Re: JC Wine Shops

Quote:
Not every wine shop has a description for every single wine they carry. Most are provided by the manufacturer or a magazine. If you only buy wines that have a tag describing the wine, then you're probably missing out on some great wines. Most beers don't describe their "flavor" in detail either. But one Pilsner can vary greatly to another pilsner and so forth.

Agreed. Moreover, the most curated wine shops just don't. The owners and staff at Madame Claude's do a ton of research (tasting and beyond) on every wine that they put on their shelves; each wine is there because the owners like it or think the neighborhood will like it.

They also keep a customer database: When you buy a wine, there's a record of it, so if you bought something you liked and can't remember what it was... (or vice versa)

If that style of shop isn't for you, then of course, shop elsewhere. But you might (don't know you, so who knows) be missing out ? if you're willing to have the occasional conversation, you could walk out with a much more personalized selection than what would be possible in a place with magazine reviews.

This is unnerving. And it's an excellent reminder to all of us to make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed in our places. I asked my landlord to replace a broken one 18 months ago, and I let it slide.
