I know. But usually when someone describes one place as "progressive and diverse" and another as "white and conservative," they're lauding the former and criticizing the latter.

Eh. I wouldn't put too much stock in that website. It tends to be a giant bitchfest of people who have a bone to pick with their apartment management.

I don't know if I would say that that area is safe because it is just too desolate., after 8:00 (maybe 10:00 during the summer) it is a ghost town-that whole area of downtown is; if some thing happens there will likely be no other witnesses.

There are definitely people walking around after 8pm in the wintertime. I often come home from work after that and I'm never the only person walking from Exchange Place along the waterfront toward the Pier.

I've come from Newport/Pavonia really late at night and, again, there are always some people around.

That said, I mostly agree with your point---it's a quiet part of town, and especially so at night. I'm not sure I'd wander around by myself, especially around behind the Powerplant or toward ShopRight (although, to be fair, I probably wouldn't wander around by myself in those areas even during the day). But, I've always felt pretty comfortable walking to/from the PATH stations.

It's closer to Exchange Place, but Pavonia/Newport is only about a 10 minute walk from there.

Also, I can't speak to the construction of the units themselves, but the area is very quiet. Unfortunately, there isn't much within walking distance, but if you have a car, that's not a problem. Frankly (and unlike most people here, I assume), I'd rather live in this part of town than in almost any other part of JC.

One last thing I'll mention---when I was looking for an apartment in JC, I think I ruled out the Pier pretty early on because it seemed more expensive than comparable places nearby. I never actually went inside, so maybe the interiors are nicer or more spacious or something, but I think you can probably find something a little bit cheaper along the waterfront. I think 1 bedrooms in places like the A Condos and Portofino are going for between $1900 and $2100 or so, including parking (subtract maybe $150 if you don't need a parking spot).

The Jersey Journal never identifies suspects' race. Because, you know, it's racist to identify who is suspected of committing a crime---at least when that suspect is black.

Yup. She's had mold for almost two years, yet stayed in the apartment because she liked the absurdly cheap rent. She could easily find a one bedroom for $783/month without a mold problem if she wanted.

I've ordered once from Sawadee. Had the curry puffs and the pad key mao (sp?). The curry puffs were excellent, if a little greasy. The pad key mao was okay, and was plenty for two sizable meals. All in all, not the best Thai I've ever had, but it was decent, and I'd probably order from there again.

UPDATE

2,000 Downtown Jersey City customers suffer through another water main break
By Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal
February 03, 2010, 12:30PM

Washington Boulevard between 14th and 18th streets is closed this morning because of a water main break.
Roughly 2,000 United Water customers in Downtown Jersey City are without water or have low water pressure today after a water main on Washington Boulevard near 14th Street ruptured last night.

United Water crews are working on repairing the main and expected to be finished by this afternoon, United Water spokeswoman Kara Kennedy said. The water company started receiving complaints from residents about 10:30 last night. A crew located the problematic main and began work on it at about 1:30 this morning.

Washington Boulevard is closed between 14th and 18th streets because of the repair work. Last week a water main ruptured in the same area. Kennedy said it could not be determined yet if the two are related.

In many of the highrise buildings in the area, residents above the fifth floor have very low pressure or no water at all, Kennedy said.

When water pressure is restored there will be no need to boil the water, she added.

Jersey City's Newport section suffers another water-main break
By The Associated Press
February 03, 2010, 4:58AM

JERSEY CITY -- A water main broke, flooding streets and affecting thousands of residents in nearby apartment buildings.

The break was reported early today in the city's Newport section in an area full of high-rise buildings.

Jersey City communications director Stan Eason said thousands of people live in the downtown area and those on or above the fifth floors of their buildings will experience no or low water pressure. He said this water main break is similar to the rupture of a 35-inch-wide pipe a week ago and is in the same location.

No one has been injured. The cause of the break hasn't been determined.

The rupture of a pipe early last month in another part of the city temporarily closed a state highway and affected the water supply to neighboring Bayonne.

I spent a few hours on Saturday afternoon at Legal Grounds to get some work done. Free, reliable, fast wifi, great sandwiches and coffee, and enough (somewhat rickety) tables such that I didn't feel bad sitting there all afternoon. I'll definitely go back.

One question, though: do they always close at 4pm?

The tea parties have been pilloried in the mainstream media because the bulk of the mainstream media is dominated by imbeciles like Keith Olbermann.

The truth is what is being planned at City Hall tonight is just like the hundreds of tea party protests that have taken place all around the country---groups of angry taxpayers who feel as though their government is failing them. That's what we're doing tonight, right?

Protesting ineffective government isn't a liberal or conservative thing---it's an American thing.

I didn't ask to leave instead of being searched, so I don't know if they would have let me.

That said, refusing the search didn't cross my mind since I needed to get to work and I don't care if the police see my turkey sandwich and work shoes.
