Well in terms of credibility examiner.com is the equivalent of a blog - anyone can write for it. So I would suggest to someone who is on the "other side" of this issue: just sign up to be some other type of generic JC examiner and you can publish your own counter articles.

These "articles" (and I use the word loosely) are ridiculous and obvious.

Then you have Washington which is two way for a while, then one way for a couple of blocks, then two-way again.

Same with Warren street which is two way for a while, then one way, then closed off sometimes but not all the times one way, then two way again for a couple of more blocks before dead ending to the grocery store.

Then Van Vorst. One way for two blocks, then two ways for two blocks, then one way again for another block.

two way two way two way ...psych it's one way...haha just kidding it's two way again. god forbid you aren't intimately familiar with these streets or you are screwed.

I'm sorry, but I've got to call out the post on this topic from examiner.com (not a dig on the author that I know nothing about, but what I know about the website itself.)

Everyone should realize that website is a content farm. There is little to no editorial oversight on what is written and the people who write articles for them are compensated by getting a percentage of the advertising revenue generated by ads on the page, meaning that the site is basically trying to be a cheap way to get niche articles high in google search results. I know this because I did a competitive landscape on content farming for work and I was approved as a Jersey City examiner for a topic I was totally unqualified to write.

When you consider that the average return to the writer on these articles is less than $15 (and from what I've seen we're looking closer to less than $7 but that data is hard to pinpoint with these private companies), you will understand how little effort was put into writing them to begin with.

The content farm model is interesting from a business perspective as a solution to the publishing issues we see today, but as a content consumer, reader beware.

Maybe a slight tangent....but I thought worth sharing.

We recently got a dog and I must say I am SHOCKED by how expensive the dog poo pickup bags are. I got my first set at Canis Minor, but even PetSmart ones aren't that cheap. After 20 minutes of searching, I found a "janitorial supplies" website and was able to order a set of 2,000 small trashbags for $16 (compared to 240 for $16 on Petsmart.com) That is savings of about $130. I'll let you guys know if they are sturdy enough or if I just threw away $16...

I had the same thoughts - either this should be a full on public service or everyone should bear their own responsibility. This legislation makes no sense to me from an economic standpoint because this is not something that landlords control. So it isn't like most carrots or sticks that are tied to something the landlord can actually control.

And while economics says they will raise their rents to cover future liability, they first need to be able to purchase...

you guessed it...bed bug insurance. Any actuaries out there wanting to start a small local business?

Given that it is the growth engine of this country taxing small business at this rate is of course the dumbest thing ever, but is this really that surprising given the lack of balance from a political/economic ideology standpoint in Jersey City? HCDO is running the show...time to replace the current members or vote with a different party (there are probably a total of 4 republicans in JC so the former probably makes more sense...)

Re: Jersey City Teacher Facts
#41
Home away from home
Home away from home

Salaries depend not only on job function but also on industry. So while an administrative assistant in financial services may make a lot of money, an accountant who works in retail may not.

Before posting the numbers I will say that I am VERY in favor of trashing tenure, boosting salaries and adding performance based bonuses. Given the importance of education to the long term sustainability of our country, I think the education field should be a competitive place to work. I think we should be drawing teachers from top colleges with top grades and the only way I think that will happen is by paying more.

That being said, since we don't have a competitive market today, teachers salaries don't seem the worst here in Jersey City and the median teacher makes basically what a median accountant makes in Jersey City.

Below are numbers pulled from 2010 HR data on salary.com - you have to ensure it has truly captured your zip code to avoid national averages (I am assuming the data on this site is valid - I know it is for my industry.)

JC Public School Teacher
Benefit Median Amount
Base Salary $59,619
Bonuses $0
Social Security $4,561
401k / 403b $2,266
Disability $596
Healthcare $6,103
Pension $2,981
Time Off $7,338
Total $83,463

Accountant 2 (there were three options, so I chose the mid option)
Benefit Median Amount
Base Salary $60,766
Bonuses $1,396
Social Security $4,755
401k / 403b $2,362
Disability $622
Healthcare $6,103
Pension $3,108
Time Off $7,651
Total $86,763

When you take into account that the year is shorter for a public school teacher by two months, you can see the effective median gross salary would be a bit higher, closer to $100,000.

So actually if I had a child trying to choose between becoming an accountant and a teacher, I would recommend teacher because of the summer benefit (basically same salary but an additional 2 months off!)

Again, I'm all for raising those salaries by a lot to get the best and the brightest - but it has to come with a competitive market (which at minimum requires getting rid of tenure.)

I use Elance.com for this type of thing. If you don't need super serious programming, it should fit the bill (and if you are posting on here for recommendations then I am guessing you don't...)

You'll be getting offshore rates and choose amongst several bidders.

Re: Taxi fare - From New York City to Jersey City

From Chelsea or below: I usually negotiate double fare. You have to be willing to get out of cabs who don't want to negotiate that way - but usually within a few I find someone who wants the deal. Then you can get it down to <$30. From uptown: If you try to ask for a flat fare from NYC they often start at $45+toll (even in Tribeca!!!) I think negotiating on the flat rate is really only a good idea when you are way up town. I once did that from 92 & 10th ave and the guy accidentally left the meter on. Meter from 92nd street to paulus hook was $24, making the 35 I negotiated down to a good deal, but in general if you start out by trying the flat fare the cabbie is going to try to anchor the negotiation at a price that is too high.

Just went back for second time at 9:30 and the place was hopping with customers. Awesome because I always get nervous about businesses that open on side streets - but it seems to be a destination which is great. Jersey City councilman, residents up in arms over extension of superintendent's contract
Jul 08, 2010

JERSEY CITY -- A group of residents and downtown Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop are trying to get the governor and state commissioner of education to overturn a June 22 Board of Education vote to extend the contract of the superintendent of schools.

The nine-member board gave a two-year extension to the contract of Dr. Charles Epps, who was originally appointed to the position by the state since the school system has been under state takeover. However, the district has been returning to home rule over the last few years, and some residents believe Epps has not done enough to improve education in the state's second largest city.

Residents and Fulop have been circulating a petition that is addressed to Gov. Chris Christie and state Commissioner of Education Bret Schundler, a former mayor of Jersey City.

The petition says, "On June 22, the Jersey City Board of Education voted to extend the current Jersey City Public School Superintendent?s contract to 2013. They held this vote at what was essentially a CLOSED DOOR MEETING with NO GENUINE ATTEMPT TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC. New Jersey State Law 18A:11-11 mandates that: ?a board of education can not in any way take action on a superintendent?s contract unless notice is provided to the public at least 30 days prior.?

This afternoon, Ward E councilman Steven Fulop sent a message out to his supporters asking them to sign a petition asking Gov. Christie and Education Commissioner Bret Schundler to overturn the Jersey City Board of Education?s (BOE) recent vote to extend Superintendent Charles Epps? contract by two years when it ends on June 30, 2011.

Fulop says nearly 500 people signed the petition in the first hour and a half it was online.

The petition comes in the wake of last week?s news that BOE member Sterling Waterman, who ran on a Fulop-supported slate this April, was planning to contest the vote with a state ethics complaint, saying the public was not given required notice.

?I am disheartened, outraged, and am reaching out to you for help,? the letter to Christie and Schundler reads. ?I hope you will take action in Jersey City to rectify this unacceptable situation by overturning the vote to extend the contract for Dr. Epps ? a vote that was made in direct conflict of the state law that requires public involvement. This is an opportunity to improve Jersey City schools and do a real national search for leadership.?

As we noted last week we noted that the state Department of Education is reviewing the contract extension; the school district has maintained it followed all the proper legal actions.

Playing the race card is the most ridiculous thing I've heard.

Hopefully no one gives it any kind of credence for two reasons:

1) Most importantly, the results (or lack of) of his leadership our school system speaks for itself and

2) It is hard to ignore the fact that Sterling Waterman is the person who raised this.

Below is an email message I received from Councilman Fulop on this issue:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am disheartened to see, all too often, that the decisions being made in Jersey City are based purely off of politics, which clearly has an adverse affect on our schools and our taxes.

Please take a minute to sign the petition to have the Governor and Education Commissioner overturn the Board of Education's illegal vote to extend the superintendent's contract. We have a chance to be heard and I hope you take a second to read the below email since it has a significant impact on our city.

What happened?

On June 22, the Jersey City Board of Education voted to extend the current Jersey City Public School Superintendent?s contract to 2013. They held this vote at what was essentially a CLOSED DOOR MEETING with NO GENUINE ATTEMPT TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC thereby making the opportunity for public participation impossible.

I am saddened by this blatant attempt to subvert the public process, and disappointed in the Board of Education for continuing to resort to status quo Jersey City politics, where big decisions that affect your schools and taxes are made to benefit the few at the expense of the many.

At the meeting it was pointed out their actions may have been illegal. New Jersey State Law 18A:11-11 mandates that:
?a board of education can not in any way take action on a superintendent?s contract unless notice is provided to the public at least 30 days prior.?

?the board [of education] must hold a public meeting and give 10 days notice of that meeting.?

Why did the Board of Education hold this meeting without proper public notification? What are they trying to hide from YOU ? the taxpayer?

Here are the facts:
Superintendent Epps? current contract is worth over $250,000 in salary and housing allowance. The current contract includes NO benchmarks, NO performance standards and NO specific reporting requirements. 35 out of 40 Jersey City schools are on the state's list of failing schools-- 14 of them for the third year or more.

What can you do?
Demand better results by signing this petition to Governor Chris Christie and Commissioner Brett Schundler asking them to overturn the vote to extend the Jersey City Public School Superintendent?s contract and to hold a national search for the best-qualified candidate.

Please take a minute to sign this petition located at http://www.rrupt.com/software2/customer/stevenfulop/survey/BOE.php and forward to all your friends in Jersey City. You should determine who will manage this $619 million budget and you should demand results.

+1. I also think people fail to realize that when the retirement age (for social security) was set, the life expectancy was almost 20 years younger than it is today. So obviously defined benefit pensions are not sustainable unless they have changed over time with life expectancy (either put more money in or change the retirement age.)

In other words: It's easy to give a lifetime of retirement benefits when you expect the person to retire at 65 and to die at 67. It's not as easy now that many people are living to 85...

It is unfortunate people but taxes are going to have to go up. Lets face it we don't pay alot in Jersey City as compared to other cities. This is apart of the metro area, I know everyone here that has a multifamily house and rents out apartments loves to use that term when telling people what they want for rent. It works in your favor then.

I'm sorry but that is a completely faulty argument. We don't pay much compared to the rest of NJ. But NJ has the highest taxes to begin with. That is akin to saying - who cares if we have armed robbery in Jersey City, it isn't as bad as the murder in Newark, so we should be happy. Let's look at what fiscally responsible states and municipalities are doing - and let's not limit it to NJ - that's just insane.

Neighbors 1 already have their house up for sale due to the last increase. Neighbors 2, 3 & 4 told me they don't see the value for their taxes so they may as well move to the burbs where the schools are good. People moving due to high taxes coupled with miserable school system is going to do wonders (in a bad way) for property values...this could really lead to a bad, bad downhill spiral...

Completely agreed with fedup. People were pretty fired up about the board of education and the budget in April. There was strong promotion to vote by both Councilman Fulop & his volunteers and by the unions and their volunteers (especially the teachers union) as well as lots of press covering the fact that there would be big turnout across the state because Christie told people to "vote down" the budget. The biggest winner only got 7,000 votes. Getting the number of signatures is not going to be as easy as you think.

You are going "all in" when you haven't yet built up any credibility. So if you fail, no one takes you seriously. Get your first small win, then people will take you seriously.
