Re: Favorite Portuguese restaurant for dinner in Newark?

I always enjoy Fernandes Steakhouse - they had a fire a while back and haven't been there since (not sure if they're open again - might want to call). Good dishes, great rodizio, terrible decor. I've never taken the PATH there, but I don't think it's terribly close.

Has anyone ordered from PH recently? We're having people over tomorrow and I'm trying to decide on them or John's (never had either). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fitting that Taqueria and Park&Sixth and on complete opposite ends of Grove St. - THIS is how you communicate with your clientele

It might have been metrodogs - we use them (def recommend them) and I know they live in PH.

Went there the other night and couldn't believe how terrible the service was. Order took forever and there had to be about 7-10 employees walking around, going outside for smoking breaks, and watching TV. The owner is crazy paranoid with what is written online, so hopefully he's reading this site and makes some changes fast. Easily one of the most inefficient cluster-Fs i've seen in a long time (with the exception of Hard Grove on 5/5 - woof).

Has anyone dealt with silkscreeners in the area since this thread was last updated in '09? We're looking to have some tote bags screened and want someone cheap with good quality, but not necessarily fancy. Thanks in advance.

Re: HUGE GAS PIPELINE COMING - through Jersey City

More than 300 entities girding for bout over natural-gas pipeline's extension
Friday, January 28, 2011
Question: What do the Urban League of Hudson County, St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City, the Village Neighborhood Association, the New Jersey Sierra Club, and the City of Jersey City all have in common?

Answer: A pipeline.

These five entities are among more than 300 residents, companies, nonprofits, religious institutions, and governmental entities that have filed for intervenor status in the case of Spectra Energy's proposed 15.5-mile natural-gas pipeline expansion.

The deadline to file for intervenor status - which gives these entities the right to litigate if the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approves the expansion - was yesterday.

A FERC spokeswoman told The Jersey Journal earlier this month that the commission is compiling information for an environmental-impact statement regarding the pipeline's proposed expansion.

The plan is for the pipeline to snake through Bayonne, Jersey City, and offshore Hoboken before heading into New York.

The Jersey City Board of Education and the City of Hoboken have also filed to be intervenors.

The City of Bayonne has not filed papers. The city has concerns about the project but has had an ongoing dialogue with Spectra about those issues, Bayonne spokesman Joe Ryan said yesterday.

Spectra project director Ed Gonzales said it's "not unusual" for so many groups to file as intervenors for projects of this magnitude.

"That's fine. That's just part of the process," Gonzales said.

Spectra hopes to begin construction on the expansion by April 2012.

Eek! the first and last time i went to this restaurant, a man in the table next to me found a roach on his fried rice after he was half way done with his plate! that is not all! you can see rat droppings if you pass by the windows from outside of the restarant!!! I ask myself how can this restaurant still be in service? I DO NOT eat from here, it is the nastiest and non-hygienic restaurant EVER! the managers breath stinks and the restaurant smells inside. Enough said!!!!

I really like this place - good spicy food and a decent decor, excellent prices. Shame to see someone would try to pass this off in their first post ever.

Went there for a 2nd time on Friday and was surprised to see how many tables they got around 11pm - great food, a lot of unique things like octopus and quail that you don't see at too many places in the area.

Ate there last weekend and was thoroughly impressed. Delicious sangria, good service, fantastic octopus and everything else we had was great too. Although they call many of their plates tappas, they're actually a decent size, especially when compared to the NYC definition of tappas.

Had a party Saturday night and ordered 50 pork and 50 chicken dumplings - everything came on time, hot, and delicious. Highly recommend - especially if you go there and talk to them, they'll cut you a deal for larger orders. Be aware though, they don't take credit cards yet.

Yeah I think so - they said that they weren't going to change the inside that much, mostly just exterior and the upstairs space.

I moved in about 2 months ago and totally agree with Mary. The apartments are really nice, the only 'cheap' thing is the flooring, which gets dented VERY easily. Everything else is beautiful and a lot nicer than what we saw at similar apartments at The Saffron, etc.

No FHA yet, but if you have a good credit score, KHOV mortgage is doing 5% down. Obviously PMI comes into play, but the cost/mo is about the same as FHA loans.

I think I may be able to shed some light on the price differential if you're talking about John Moss. He was already familiar with the building I'm moving into. That's not to say he wasn't thorough, just that when I told him the address over the phone, he already was able to describe the basement to me.

Tino, if you're moving into Crescent Court, not yet a known quantity for local inspectors, the price may be a littler higher. Just a guess.

Thanks Moxie - I wasn't really commenting on the price, more that he was looking for a referral name... wasn't sure if anyone wanted to take credit. Thanks for the advice
