Re: Excellent Buffalo Wings- Where can I find them?

I like the wings at Park & Sixth on Grove street - meaty, crispy, and spicy.

The buffalo sauce on the wings at Lucky 7s wasn't my thing -heavy, sweet, and reminded me of something that would come out of a bottle, like heinz or something.

Hamilton Inn wings are occasionally good, but more often small and overcooked.

I'm in favor of Fulop's plan. I love living here because we have independent stores and not chains. Give me 99 Cent Dream over Family Dollar any day, Tia's over H&M, Torico's over Baskin Robbins, Word over... well, I just order books from them instead of using Amazon, Left Bank over Applebees, Roman Nose over Olive Garden, 9Bar over Starbucks, WonderBagel over Panera, and I could go on. I don't care if the developers in the big new towers have to wait longer for the right lease to come along. I don't want my neighborhood looking like a generic shopping mall.

This was absolutely not a joke. I'm just hoping the word got out to the proper authority after I spoke with someone on the phone at the police station. The gentleman I spoke with seemed to take me seriously and told me he'd be sending someone to check out the situation. I let him know it was creating a traffic situation, hoping that would spur on more urgent action than just an injured bird. I'm glad we persisted with the slow traffic instead of turning off on a side street, otherwise we may never have seen the bird.

BTW she was really beautiful. It was amazing to see such a big bird in our urban jungle. I wondered how many passers by even knew what she was.

We saw a wild turkey on Newark Ave this morning around 7:50am right after we passed Healy's, on our way up to Journal Sq. It appeared injured and traffic was slowing for it. I called the police to report it. I'm wondering if anyone has any updates? Did you see it? Poor bird!

Re: The Centenary - Hamilton Park

Loved that they preserved the structure instead of tearing it down to add something ho-hum. Utilizing the stained glass and vaulted ceilings were no-brainers in the design, and absolutely give a "wow factor". We also liked the dark stained floor - very modern and different from what we've seen elsewhere. And who doesn't love 12' ceilings?

We thought the first floor units and the top floor units were the most successful, with great light and access to some of the beautiful and charming "remnants" of the building's former life. The second floor units on the front were a little cave-like due to the position of the existing windows.

That being said, there were some elements that left us less than impressed, especially at these price points. Many of the following items are little aesthetic things that I'm guessing most people wouldn't care about. Others are probably indicators that the developers were through putting money into the project. But a couple are worth a second look.

The allocation of space in the first floor units did have some fails: the second bath off the hallway was very large, but all the fixtures were spread out instead of leaving one wall for built-in storage. The tub was also a short tub, instead of bumping the wall out into the hallway (which was very wide). The amount of closets in the hallway was also verging on insanity. One closet space on either end would have been much better utilized as a desk nook.

The left side first floor unit had a glass door with outside access in the second bedroom. We wouldn't be comfortable with that on the ground floor.

Many of the baths had a very odd aluminum stripping instead of grout between the tiles in the showers. Not the greatest look.

The master bath in the largest unit (the unit with that crazy wet bar in the master suite) had the tub fixtures installed on the room side of the tub instead of the wall side. The adjoining closet had an uncovered old pipe running along the floor.

The balcony off the back of the largest unit was definitely not graded properly: standing water on the building side.

And there were already drywall seams splitting, so that could be some settling or just not so great drywalling.

Verdict: for $2.5mil in Jersey City, you can get a lot of square footage (3500+?) but not the best quality construction, fixtures, or taxes (it's got a 10yr tax abatement, so who knows what that top floor unit will be paying in the future). Regardless, I hope they sell at asking because that can only be good for surrounding values :)

I think all they had was "canned bear" (someone next to me had a Genesee) but I wasn't looking, so didn't really notice if they had taps or not.

Went last night for cocktails and $1 oysters (Monday special).

We were impressed with the drink menu and their unusual selection of liquors (we weren't familiar with quite a few of the labels up on their shelves). Our group tried The Lady Brett (lightly sweet and refreshing), The Old Pal (definitely heavy on the Campari), and The Mina (disappeared rather quickly so it must have been tasty). The bartender offered a taste of the Beaujolais, unprompted, before a glass was filled. All around the staff seemed professional, courteous, and skilled.

The oysters were nice and fresh. The reuben spring rolls were crispy, flavorful, and actually pretty addictive.

The soft lighting and ambiance was perfect for unwinding after a long day. There were several different seating arrangements depending on the size of your group. We found the space intimate but comfortable. I noticed the "vintage" smell upon entering but it wasn't very strong and I didn't notice it after a few minutes. The music selection was right up my alley: Stones and Talking Heads come to mind.

Does the Port Authority have a busking program like the MTA? If not, I think they should. I think music on the platform improves QOL. Just like murals and mosiacs do. Distract me from the misery of riding PATH!

Has anyone tried the dim sum place on Montgomery St downtown, Shanghai Best?

I'd like to go for dim sum on Sunday and wonder how it compares to the places in Chinatown. Cart? Big selection? Quality? Price?

Thanks!

Isn't there already a bunch of privately-owned homes on those cul-de-sacs (Laurel and Saddlewood Courts)? Not sure how someone could have bought them out unless they bought out all of the homeowners.

In the past, and maybe still, there was an organization called SALAMAPO - (as I recall) - maybe it owns the block or the owners of the houses were shareholders (like a co-op). SAndlewood,LAurel,MAple and POplar. In any case, the only thing that block has going for it, from my POV, is that it is low rise. The Marin side is always filthy. This, plus rumors that Villa Borinquen might get redeveloped poses a serious threat to another breach in the Marin high-rise limit.

The street off of 2nd has got some great iris that come up each year in the sidewalk "tree holes". Is it finally time to snag some tubers? Those things haven't been divided in... they've probably never been divided. So really, I'd be doing them a service...

I love shopping here! Every time I'm in, the staff is upbeat, helpful, and knows their stuff.

Word has definitely become my go-to local place for gifts and especially cards. They have funny, charming, artistically astute cards for every occasion: new baby, birthday, Valentine's Day, friendship, wedding, you name it. AND the selection keeps changing. I think every time I've shopped for a birthday card, they've got new, clever designs to choose from.

Picked up spinach fettuccine there last night for dinner and topped it with a homemade bolognese. It was very tasty, cooked up nicely to al dente, and had a delicate toothsome texture that was perfect for a meaty sauce.

I've never bought fresh pasta before aside from the grocery store refrigerator case stuff and this was far superior in taste and texture. It was $7/lb and I got 1 lb for two people. It was enough for 3 so I'm eating the leftovers today.

They had a sign outside for a sale on squash ravioli, so I guess sometimes things go on special.

Nicole's on CC and Jersey Ave - delicious curry goat and curry fish takeout will transport you to the Caribbean in no time. We would've never ordered from this place if it weren't for Seamless. It's definitely a little rustic. But the food is always yummy and the service very friendly.

The space seems perfect for outdoor seating - it's got a huge space. Are there limitations on how late diners may be seated outside for neighborhood noise control?

Also, I haven't been by in a while, but isn't the apartment building next door boarded up?

The Kitchen at Grove Station http://www.grovestationkitchen.com
299 Marin Blvd, on the back side of that big office bldg

The food is delicious (brunch: grits, pork belly sandwich, almond croissant).
The decor is cozy, casual, and hip (amazing transformation in what was probably a very sterile environment before).
The service is outstanding - they went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, attended to, and completely satisfied with our experience.

I love everything about this place and will be taking many, many meals here in the future!

Do you know of any celebrations happening at local bars/restaurants for the big night?

So far I see:

Park & Sixth: $100 open bar, champagne toast, and hors d'oeuvres

I love their lobster ravioli and eggplant rollatini. It just tastes like classic Italian American fare to me.

The place can be pretty quiet some nights which is also nice when you don't want a big scene.

This is definitely more of a late night place. I went around 7 once for taco tuesday ($2 tacos, i think?) and it seemed like they were just opening up.

I think the food is fine considering the prices. And it's byo so it can be a super cheap night out. AND the guys who work there are incredibly nice.

Come in if you're dope.

For some reason I remember that episode recommending, believe it or not, Rachel Ray's stock. I could be wrong though.

Re: Eminent Domain on Metropolis Towers

Regardless of whether it's realistic or not, I vote for eminent domain! Those buildings are so ugly, inside and out. I looked into living in them when I first moved to JC 9 years ago and remember the front desk person (could never be classified as a "concierge") being really rude. I don't think we actually bothered to go up and see the unit, the "lobby" was so dirty and it felt sort of unsafe. I got the same feeling walking in there that I used to get when I'd visit a friend living in a project in Manhattan.

And then after Sandy we walked by the parking lot and there was some super fancy car that had been flooded out. I think it was an orange Bugatti. So weird. I would definitely have spent my money on a better place to live, not a ridiculous car. And if I didn't live there, I would have stowed my super fancy car somewhere a little higher than sea level.

Last time I went, I got one more rice ball than I could consume. So I took it home, popped it in the fridge, and the next day I microwaved it for 30sec in the plastic wrapper. It came out perfect! Filling was toasty warm and the seaweed wrapper still crispy.

I think I've finally mastered unwrapping them and truly believe the wrapper is genius at keeping the textures right.
