Re: Jersey City mayoral candidates get into shouting match over corruption at debate

The inability of the FBI to make a case does not necessarily equate with innocence. Mayor Healy knew what was going on and had the opportunity and the responsibility(oath of office uphold the laws and support and defend the constitution) to put a stop to illegal conduct upon the part of his convicted supporters and he failed to do so. His failure to do so resulted in a benefit to him specifically campaign cash and regardless of whether or not he was charged such conduct is corrupt at least in the average persons view.

Applications are available at City Hall West (Astor Bar). However; you must pass a test to be considered for the position. You must be able to drink all day and maintain a constant B.A.C. of .08% or above (the higher the better) and be able to drive home after closing without incident.

I respect your choice of candidate but I would look past superstitions and concentrate more on content.

As the Journal writes I agree that the other candidates looking to replace Healy are worthy but I happen to think Manzo is the best choice for the job.On this site you find good arguments for the other candidates in particular Levin.

All of these candidates are for transparent government which I believe is currently lacking. The Journal recognized this in all the challengers.

I particularly like the bottom line analysis the Journal makes about Manzo being a workaholic. That's a good word for anyone looking to be Jersey City's next mayor because we need someone who is going to give 24/7.

Whoever your choice for mayor is I hope to see a very large turnout on Tuesday May 12.It's a credit to our country that we can discuss these issues here and make our own personal choices that impact our direction. Many people before us have made that possible for us.

I agree with you that given the selection of candidates that Manzo would be the best choice and has the best chance of unseating Mayor Healy. While everyone has the right to vote for any candidate they want a vote for any other candidate would have the effect of being a vote for Healy as it will detract from the votes his closest challenger sort of like a Ross Perot vote. However; I do support their right to cast that vote and hope that they come out to support Mr Manzo after the runoff.

Even though I have no plans on voting for Healey, I still find it amusing that people constantly blame the mayor for any crime that occurs. We live in a fairly large metro area. Crime happens in places such as these. We live in an area with sporadic concentrations of high poverty, unemployment, and large numbers of illegal immigrants. Crime happens in places such as these. We're in the midst of the largest worldwide depression in generations. Yet again, crime tends to rise when people are unemployed, making less and face a bleak future.

None of these are factors any mayor can control, yet people will constantly make political hay out of it. Lot of people who like posting on here need to gain a little perspective on the larger picture. Aside from the people paid to talk up or talk down certain candidates - feel free to keep doing your jobs.

Glad to hear you have no plans on voting for Healy. Mayor Healy ran on a law & order platform years ago. Your assertion that crime happens is to a degree true as well as that it is likely to rise in a recession is also true. However; crime was on the rise thru the best times for the Healy administration too. While these particular factors may be outside the mayors control there are others that are not such as manpower, deployment, and leadership. Areas such as these are where the Mayor has failed and must be held accountable by the voters. In order to effectively suppress criminal activity on the rise one must first acknowledge its existence the same as an alcoholic must acknowledge that he has a drinking problem before he (the alcoholic) can surmount that problem. Mayor healy like the alcoholic tells us that the problem (CRIME/DRINKING) doesn\'t exist (denial). An administration in denial that crime is rising cannot efectively combat it. The mayor needs to be held accountable for his entire record not just what is happening this year during the economic downturn. Tuesday will tell if the voters of Jersey City feel that he has kept his contract with the people of Jersey City. If they do feel that he has kept his side of the bargain then they deserve four more years of increasing crime, higher taxes and political embarrassment throughout the state. If they don\'t feel that he has kept that contract they should vote for someone else.

GDCS was born out of a sham pepetrated on the taxpayers of Jersey City by the Schundler administration and has enjoyed the benefits since then. Anything born out of deceipt like that is likely to suffer the cosequences of such dishonest behavior. When Healy/Schundler were running against each other at that time Healy took Schundler to task over this blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars. Healy was right then (I can't believe i'm saying that, my keyboard is resisting every letter I type. Even a broken clock is right twice a day) and after enjoying these ill gotten gains don't expect too much sympathy.

Apparently, you are one of those individuals that gloat and think it can't happen here because "It is nicer here". You're right there is nothing funny about this. But some downtowners think they are immune from the problems suffered by the remainder of the citys' inhabitants. This type of gallows humor highlights the ludicrousness of such a false sense of security. We have 13 days to make a decision as to whether we will continue to buy Mayor Healys B/S about crime being down or to replace this completely incompetent excuse for a chief executive. Remember the broken windows theory. If you have windows that are broken and not fixed no body thinks too much about another broken window. We just accept it. Wallet taken by gunman
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
A Jersey City man was robbed at gunpoint in Paulus Hook early Sunday, police reports said.

Called to Washington and Essex streets at 2 a.m. on reports that a man was robbed, police met with the 26-year-old Warren Street resident who told them a man with a bandanna covering his face walked up to him, showed him a black handgun and said, "Give me all your money or I will blow your head off," reports said.

The gunman ran east on Essex Street with the victim's wallet, which contained $27 cash, his driver's license and credit cards, reports said.

Police searched the area, but couldn't find the holdup man.

1 more murder victim in Jersey City in 2009
Monday, April 27, 2009
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
A Jersey City man acquitted of felony murder charges last October was shot dead at the Booker T. Washington public housing complex early Saturday morning, officials said.

The 1 a.m. slaying of Jalil Spears, 22, a resident of the Montgomery Gardens housing complex, could be related to some of the previous homicides the city has seen so far this year, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

"We have had nine homicides in Jersey City this year so far, eight of them involved handguns," DeFazio said. "There is some degree of interrelation between a number of these homicides and there seems to be an overlap in the cast of characters that are involved."

Spears died on Fremont Street from a gunshot wound to the head, DeFazio said. A lone gunman fired at least six shots at Spears from a semi-automatic pistol and two shots hit a parked car, he said. No arrests have been made and detectives are investigating, he said.

Spears was acquitted by a jury on Oct. 9. on charges of felony murder in the death of Antwon Hill, 19, of Jersey City, who was fatally shot during a robbery attempt on Oct. 20, 2007, near the Montgomery Shopping Plaza, DeFazio said. Hill had served time in prison for drug dealing.

DeFazio couldn't say if there was a connection between that trial and Saturday's shooting because the motive has not been established.

Spears was also arrested at 7:54 p.m. in February at Bergen and Bramhall avenues and charged with eluding police in a motor vehicle pursuit. They had tried to pull him over, when he allegedly leading police on a car chase onto the New Jersey Turnpike, officials said.

Saturday's killing comes on the heels of Tuesday's shooting death of 17-year-old Pedro Roman Jr. who was gunned down in broad daylight at Triangle Park in the city's Greenville section. This shooting came a month after three teens survived being shot in the park and a week-long eruption of gunfire in and near the park. DeFazio said many of the shootings were gang-related and had an element of revenge to them. "The Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutors Office have a number of working theories on a number of these cases but we need proof," DeFazio said. "The public has to get invested in this problem and help us confront this problem and the deaths of these young men."

Anybody with information about Saturday's fatal shooting is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.

And summer isn't even here yet, but don't fret Mayor Healy says crime is down in Jersey City.

Won't see tax bills until after election
Monday, April 27, 2009
By AMY SARA CLARK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Jersey City taxpayers are not likely to receive second quarter tax bills until after they pull the lever in the May 12 municipal elections.

The bills are scheduled to be sent out on May 11 - the day before the elections and three weeks later than last year, city officials confirmed last week.

Why the delay?

City officials said it all has to do with the city's application for special municipal aid from the state, which delayed the introduction and adoption of a final spending plan for the fiscal year that began on July 1, 2008 and will end on June 30. The council introduced their budget on Feb 9.

The state announced on April 14 that the city would receive $5 million in special municipal aid, $2.2 million less than what the city had requested, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

The city spent a week trying to get state officials to bump up the amount, she said. But state officials would not budge and the city had to cut its budget, get the City Council to approve the changes and then hold final budget hearings, Morrill said.

Because of the need to advertise the hearings properly under the state Sunshine Law, the public hearing and final vote is scheduled for May 7.

Officials said it takes about two business days to print and mail the bills, so they are not likely to be sent out until May 11. This means most taxpayers will receive the bills after the May 12 municipal election.

Taxpayers will then have 25 days to pay, city Tax Collector Maureen Cosgrove said.

City Clerk Robert Byrne said the public hearing could have been moved up if not for conflicts with the City Council Chambers, he only room large enough to hold public hearings. The Historic Preservation Commission has the room booked on May 4, the Planning Board on the 5th, and there is a graduation ceremony on the 6th, he said.

As to having the meeting elsewhere, Byrne said, "Then we would be criticized for holding a budget hearing in an alternate site."

Morrill - whose boss, Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy is up for re-election on May 12 - insisted there was no political reason for the delay because there is no municipal tax hike in the bill.

But at least one mayoral hopeful sees a politically-timed glitch.

"Clearly in the last month every action taken by the city has been geared toward the election," said David Cruz, a spokesman for Assemblyman Harvey Smith, who is a mayoral candidate.

"If it were going to be a tax cut," Cruz added, "then you can be sure that the mayor would have made sure that people would have gotten (the bills) already."

Does anybody really believe there is nothing political about the timing of the tax bills?

Mayor Healy is going to take action, Rather than deal with the criminals involved he is going to support the relocation of the little leaguers. But what about the residents of the area? Is he going to relocate all of them too? What about the drivers accessing the NJ Turnpike ramp? Could they get hit with stray bullets too? Maybe we could detour traffic to a safer ramp maybe in Bayonne. Mayor Healy will take action immediately following his re-election since he has been too busy to do it in the past four years.

It's not cops who are indifferent
Thursday, April 23, 2009
N obel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel once said "The opposite of life is not death, it's indifference." For the man who swore he would never be silent when human beings suffer, indifference is "the epitome of evil."

There can be no indifference in Jersey City. Its citizens are reeling from days of violence and has led to the Tuesday shooting death of 17-year-old Lincoln High school student Pedro Roman Jr. on Cator Avenue near Triangle Park. Yesterday, an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with the fatal shooting.

City residents do not care about statistics. They know there are too many criminal and violent activities on their streets.

Ask yourself whether the timing of Friday's 50 arrests by police, with federal and state help and chronicled by a well-produced video with a long cameo appearance by Mayor Jerramiah Healy, a mere coincidence? It was a very expensive tax-paid campaign ad and the closest thing to indifference.

Last week, shots rang out on Bright Street near Gateway Field, where about 25 Roberto Clemente Little Leaguers, ages 7 to 14, were terrified. Coaches and adults threw themselves over the children to protect them. No one was hurt.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has offered to find the Little Leaguers a new place to play. Where? In the Pershing Field area, where last Friday there was a brutal stabbing?

At the end of last month, the Triangle Park area was first in the news when three teens were hit with gunshots. At the time of the crime, police said they didn't believe the shootings were random and that the victims were not cooperating with the investigation.

This newspaper would never believe that the city Police Department would be indifferent, far from it. They do their jobs and many of them do them well. City residents rely on their professionalism. What police need is better support and less public relations. They need people in the community to work with police and provide information or tips. There can be no indifference

Because the force field that separates the field from downtown proper protects the downtown residents from the spillover violence and prevents stray bullets from hitting anyone in that section.
