I highly recommend Peter's on Bergen..I had a pair of italien boots polished (the tips were wearing off), an elastic replaced on a pair of shoes, a pair of shoes polished/repaired whose weaving was falling out and a pair of shoes whose bottom heels replaced...all for $36! I love the old school places with character and people with real skills...for me this was the place.

YIKES...didn't know that about Old Good Things.
I'll check out Recyling the Past..one of the challenges is finding a door in the size we need, that swings the right way, etc. This is why I'd like to find a place that has good prices AND that can customize the door to the size we need. If we had the carpentry skills then we'd buy one super cheap and refinish..Build it Green had doors for a song, highly rec that place if you have skills.

Thanks everyone-I really appreciate all the feedback! I\'ve looked online at Old Good Things & Demolition Depot (didn\'t go in person), and went to Build it Green in Astoria...all decent prices but haven\'t found the size I need. I was planning a trip to Scranton as there are a couple big Salvage places there (including one who can customize), but was just trying to find a more local place if possible. Once we find a door then we will need a craftsman/carpenter (specializing in doors, not general), so if you have anyone you recommend please feel free to pass along their info

Looking for a place that sells antique exterior doors...besides Amighini (too pricey) can anyone recommend a place nearby or within an hour of JC?

We moved here a year ago from Brooklyn...we knew more neighbors within the 1st month than we did living 10 years in Brooklyn! The day our moving truck pulled up in front of our house (in JSQ) we were greeted with a cooler of sodas and beer and welcomed with open arms. We love the neighborhood & feel like we really lucked our with our block. Totally unpretentious neighborhood with real people. My only complaints about JSQ is that it would be nice to have more restaurant & cafe options, but we just go downtown for that (no biggie), and then the a**holes who just throw garbage on the street, but you can't totally avoid that living in a city. You should definitely stick it out here...it's worth it!
