Agreed.

Fulop is a very clear, no-brainer choice over Healy. As for Ward E, I'm going to go with Dan. I don't know any of these candidates personally but have been doing some research. Dan's responses, thoughtfulness, experience win me over.

JC has a horrible driving culture... No doubts about that, however you seem to be seriously misinformed.

At a no signal/control device but marked crosswalk, pedestrians have right-of-way, though there are many that are not respected by JC drivers.

At a controlled intersections pedestrians do not have right of way against a light. If pedestrians have green and turning vehicle has green, turning vehicle has to yield. If pedestrian does NOT have green, pedestrian does not have right of way. And I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to get into screaming f*** you matches with other traffic players, especially as a pedestrian.

But that's how they get that special entitled feeling. There is a lot of bad and only some good in NYPD, JCPD and Hoboken PD, in my experience. Over the years, I have lost all respect for them.

Open space is being removed from Liberty State Park (LSP). Where we once had a "Great Lawn" now sits a marina. We have had the addition of a golf course. There is development impinging on LSP from all sides.

I really hope we get the footbridge re-built and keep LSP as-is. We have plenty of roads and traffic and pollution in the area. We have the Turnpike and we have the Holland Tunnel, and we have more traffic than is healthy. Isn't this enough chaos?

It is important that we retain what little of an oasis that still exists in LSP.

Identifying this as a key JC problem, staking your campaign on it and putting a plan out are all the right moves. That the plan mentions getting police out of their patrol cars and to walk an actual beat is significant. There is far more foot patrol in Hoboken & Manhattan, contributing to safety on the streets.

I've been very impressed by this little spot on the Heights (on Central near Congress). Great tamales, tacos, chicken mole etc... Not greasy and overall an authentic home-made feel with great prices. The burritos/wraps are huge... Two thumbs up from me (and I don't even live in the heights).

Yes, I'll miss that bridge as well, I hope some version of it (hopefully stronger than the outgoing one) reopens. The last one was heading downhill even before Sandy...

On another note, even going around the "long" way, isn't the park completely closed/off-limits? Any ideas on when it might reopen or will it be shut all winter?

I'm not on the Hudson, but on the southern waterfront, facing liberty state park.

The water is just about coming level with a mark it hit at Irene's peak, it's perhaps 6" below. So at the current high tide, I'd say we're 3' to 4' above normal high tide.

Surf City/Liberty Harbor Marina and Hudson Public Walkway
#43
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I'm wondering the status of the north side of the Morris Canal Big Basin. Has this become part of the Hudson Public Waterfront yet?

There has been a walkway there for years, roughly running between the end of Marin and to the end of the parking lot, not far from the industrial wasteland bit that separates it from Jersey Avenue. If you don't mind cutting through the ferry parking lot for a bit on two ends, this has been a way for quite a few folks in Paulus Hook while walking, running or cycling.

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I were rudely turned away by the guard posted at the western end of the parking lot (towards Jersey Ave) who said that "Only vehicles were allowed.". When I mentioned that bikes are "vehicles" and are covered by traffic rules, he changed his tune, said that there's been some thefts, some dude Peter owns the whole place and doesn't want anything but vehicles on it (I assume that means cars and straight-piped motorcycles). When I mentioned the Hudson Waterfront Walkway he got aggressive, waved us off saying other folks had mentioned that and that they would "litigate" and that we were free to do so.

Is this fully private property? Am I in the wrong here or do I have some kind of ground to stand on should I decide to pursue the argument?

Re: should Jersey City create and implement on-street bicycle lanes?
#45
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

As a cyclist, it feels safest to mix and match. Sometimes sidewalk is safer, sometimes the road, and yes sometimes the wrong way "feels" better. This isn't the law, but sadly, with our sad state of transportation culture, it is the reality.

Obviously there are many yahoo/low-skill/entitled cyclists among us, there is no doubt. I did a group ride with some "serious" cyclists (messenger types), and I cannot believe how center of street they stayed and how pissed off drivers were. I told them that was not cool at all, how would they like it if pedestrians blocked them?

I stay as right as possible, but then I've had doors opened on me. How many drivers check their mirror for cyclists? In Holland, they teach you to open the driver's door with your RIGHT hand so you turn your head automatically.

I am a pedestrian, a driver and a motorcyclist. Can I cycle the way I motorcycle through town, obeying the letter of the law? No, I would be killed. I have to duck and weave to "make space", because cars don't give me any (and some peds don't either).

If you want to see transportation done right, go to Germany. I've spent some time in Cologne, and it was many kinds of awesome. Cars drive slow in town and fast on the highway. Public transport works. Bike lanes are not beside the road, they were between parked cars and the sidewalk. Pedestrians stay off the bike sidewalks. People who cycle know how to ride a bike (sort of like they knew how to drive). There is a whole culture around transportation safety, efficiency and fun.

Some people are bothered by cyclists on streets and try to run us down, some of those are the same people who are bothered by the occasional cyclist on the sidewalk. Even the recently started bike lane on Grove (that really needs to be extended to a whole lot of other streets) has double-parked cars on it. Where do you want us to go???

/END RANT

In summary, bike lanes are a GOOD thing. The more the better. City streets need to be narrowed in any case to slow traffic down (also a GOOD thing and I personally like fast cars in safe circumstances). I just hope we make the transition with the most respect for each other, whichever role we are in, and with the least amount of accidents.

Just can't stay away

I got pulled over late at night last week in my new car (that has temp tags). I wasn't speeding but the pulling over felt very serious by a very unmarked car (I won't name it to keep the good work going). Very quickly the cops relaxed as they saw that the paperwork was legitimate. When they saw out-of-state paper plates on an attention catching car, they wanted to check it out. They asked me to be careful, especially if I get a rear-ending.

They are on it to an extent, if you think about it, it'll be tough to tilt these arrest statistics and tough to eliminate. And now I think perhaps this new car wasn't such a good idea. What can I do? I love cars and bikes.

I'm not even sure what the best strategy is. Lady gassed it away with her kids in the car. What about the guy who got shot dead? Did he not give up the car?

Re: in light of the terrible Grand St accident, lets join together and DEMAND SAFER JERSEY CITY!!

On Grand, you can't even go 25 without being tailgated, I've had some very angry reactions from drivers (from all walks of life, west side folks to goldman sachs) if I try to keep to the speed limit and slow down. I slowed for a pedestrian at the Van Vorst crosswalk and almost got rear ended. I had delivery guys almost hitting my car when I'm trying to make the turn onto Warren, the driving culture here is simply out of control.

That said, Grand does have a several major design issues.

1. Wide open streets like Columbus and portions of Grand cause speeding. Fact. This is irrespective of the Mr. Chandler of the day or what posted limits may be. 25 is the limit in that portion and people seem to want to go 40-50. 25 is the limit in the tight streets towards Hamilton Park and that's about what people go because of perceived tightness.

2. The houses/stores on the southside of Grand (near Marin/Grove) are troublesome. There is no parking/stopping possible for those folks. When they inevitably do stop (like that van related to the small business), they almost cause accidents for themselves and the rest of us.

3. The lane merge between Jersey Ave and Grove St is awful. I need to come into with hawk level attention as most people on the left lane go straight thus changing into the right lane all the while expecting you on the right lane to yield to them. They're the ones changing lanes, but they're going straight and the lanes were redesigned last year to provide a piddly dozen or so parking spots. Sometimes those cars pull out blindly as they can't see the traffic behind.

4. Gull's Cove area doesn't have good access. I see tons of illegal turns across Grand into and out of Liberty View Dr. as well as the other ones (River & Tidewater).

I see three possibilities:

1. Events described are real. OP happens to have a hyperbolic writing style that can make truth sound like fiction.

2. For whatever reason (speeding, red light?), police were behind OP, chasing him. He tried to outrun, but couldn't. He changed tack, pulled over and came out with the jacking tale with some details thrown in (5-series, weight/height/gun). Then he joined jclist and posted about it, bolstering the tale.

3. Everything you have read is fictional and for entertainment purposes.

You can use a front end like crazedlist or better, searchtempest to search multiple craigslists (say all northeast) with a given search radius. As you'll have many more hits this way, need to be specific with keywords.

Sucks, best of luck.

My girlfriend and I were biking back from LSP tonight. Right by the light rail station on Jersey Ave, she got grazed on the face by a rock. Through supreme luck, she's not hurt, but the rock was fist sized. We couldn't really quite understand/piece it together as it happened but there were about 4-5 kids walking into the station over the fence from us. When we shouted, they seemed to hide on the other side. Sometimes there are transit cops or a JCPD car parked there. Not tonight. a good scare at least to not continue this stupidity.

What triggers this? Our helmets? The led lights on her bike as darkness was falling? Hate of the "other"?

In one way or another, it happens everywhere... Apparently our public servants have something to hide. Look at this videotaping of a routine traffic stop (from someone's private property!). Chicken-hearted (and brained) "officer" is "unsafe" when a lady is videotaping him. If he does his job right, why should he worry about being taped?

Awful story... I don't know the details, but in the end the theme doesn't change. Police are often brutal and rarely accountable, hence the cycle continues. For those apologists... Think of it in the following way: What if he was the thief? Does he still need to be beaten? The aim of police is to take individuals into custody. They could make a bad mistake and take the wrong person in. But they shouldn't beat him nor should they beat an obvious criminal. One of the few ways in which the US is just not a very civilized country.
