Random shooting which occurs every day in the USA and somehow "Trump" comes into the conversation. Well done.

I'll take it by your response that you believe each has many priors and should not be out on the street.

No, nothing having to do with your thoughts or my opinions on the criminal justice system. Just the fact that anyone in this country could actually believe a President, let alone the current one, could effectively change anything to do with their current life/local neighborhood.

The point is while the liberal Democrats rant and rave about Trump, the Wall, (fill-in the blank with why you hate Trump), etc., the REAL problems like this are not being solved by the Democrats - but hey, let's all brag how we have the strictest gun laws in the US - tell me how that's working.

Jersey might have strict guns laws, but this country as a whole has the weakest gun laws of any first world country. I'll let you in on a little secret... we don't have import export regulations between states. Guns cross state lines like water going down a stream from one property to another. No local regulations will ever end gun violence in this country.

Until this country gets Federally mandated gun control, in place for years, we won't see a reduction in gun violence. My guess, unfortunately, that will never happen due to the obstinance of conservatives.

Integration with NYC Transit would be a godsend.

It really wouldn't.

First, the PATH will lose money no matter who is running it. Fares only cover half its cost; the idea that you can cut its costs by 50% by changing management is borderline delusional. Meaning that even if it was significantly better run, it would still lose hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

On that basis alone, I cannot imagine any government agency in any way wanting to be on the hook for the PATH.

Second, the MTA is a freaking mess. Rampant weekend closures, a switching system that dates from the 1930s that will cost $37 billion and ten years to replace, and doesn't include station upgrades.

Third, who actually runs the MTA? The Governor of New York. If you think PA is unresponsive, what will happen when the PATH is answerable to Albany? Go ask Di Blasio, who feuds constantly with Cuomo over the MTA.

Will Albany want to spend money on stations in New Jersey? Extend the PATH to Newark Airport? Will the agency that was going to shut down the L Train for 15 months do better with WTC tunnel improvements? Is it really better when Cuomo blows away 3 years of planning for the L Train shutdown on a chance encounter (and/or to screw with Di Blasio)? What would happen if the MTA decided to chronically underfund the PATH, as it's done with the NYC subway?

To paraphrase the old saying: The PA is the worst agency to manage the PATH, except for every other agency.

Quote:
Although MTA has it's problems, they look like a well-run Swiss organization compared to the Port Authority or NJ Transit.

When was the last time you rode the 6 during rush hour?

Quote:
My other ideal is much more radical... PATH should add a dollar or more surcharge for swipes during peak periods to reduce overcrowding.

That would definitely help, but... that is basically a 36% fare increase during those periods. Some of us can handle it, but that's pretty brutal for some riders.

More to your point, it's not going to reduce ridership much (if at all). The people riding during peak times are commuters, who need to get to work. What are they going to do, take the $7 ferry? Drive?

Quote:
with the extra revenue being used for service improvements...

The PATH runs a $400 million deficit. Increasing fares by $1 would reduce the deficit by quite a bit ($260m?) but certainly won't be able to fund service improvements.

Quote:
Let's face it, the overcrowding situation is at crisis levels.

It really isn't.

Let us know when the PA needs to hire train pushers.

Resized Image

Quote:
The problem is I have no confidence in the Port Authority as they will waste any extra revenue derived from PATH. The finances are already a blackhole.

Yeah, thing is? PA is actually putting money into the PATH. That's a key reason why it's got such a huge deficit.

I might add, I don't hear a lot of NYC residents expounding on the greatness of the MTA these days. That definitely sounds like a "grass is greener on the other side" thing.

The reality is that public transportation and public infrastructure is very expensive... and we don't want to pay for it.

Very well stated.

Thank you.

My guess is that the MTA would never want to merge itself with PATH for one major reason. PATH is subject to a lot of Federal Railroad regulations, as it crosses state lines and is considered "interstate commerce," where as the NYC Subway is totally contained within New York State, and does not have to abide by the Federal Railroad regulations. The Port Authority faces much higher costs due to more stringent regulations and inspections, most designed for traffic between cities, not within an urban area. If the two systems were to merge, than the entire NYC Subway system would be subject to those rules and regulations.

Now perhaps there's a legal way around that, where the MTA operates the PATH separately from the NYC Subway, as it operates Metro North into Connecticut separately from the Subway, but it would have to be separate.

Hell NO.... PATH is only 1/3 of my three zone commute. I first have to get to PATH, then PATH into the City, and then the NYC Subway to uptown Manhattan. I'm not the only one with a 3 zone commute. We don't need more highways clogging the the two tunnels and the GW Bridge into NYC. We need more public subsidies for mass transit to help alleviate traffic conditions all over the tri-state commuting area.

And last, but water under the proverbial bridge, we should not have wasted billions on WTC PATH station. We PATH riders pay a premium for that debacle every day.

We had similar experiences. Went there twice. Both times the food was bland and the side pastas were way overcooked to the point of being mush. If a place is bad once, I'll gladly try again, but two times is enough not to go back.

We have a 27" wide closet that can accommodate the wider 27" stacked units. Our 26 year old Sears Kenmore Wash Center (dryer attached atop a washer) died several months ago. We were, based on several neighbor's recommendations, going to get the LG stackable washer and dryer, both front-loading. But it would have been about an inch or less than the height of the door. We were shown the single unit ventless LG Washer/Dryer. It's one unit that is large enough to handle a king sized quilt, it washes then goes right into a drying cycle, if desired. Considering it's just my wife and I, it's keeping up with our needs. A full wash and dry cycle takes about 3 hours, and we are not left with those wet clothes you forgot to move from washer to dryer. So far after several months, both of us are very happy.

The unit was about $1500, and they also make a similar "compact" 24" wide model.

I'm not going to get into details here Yvonne, but you don't seem to understand the idea behind tax abatements. Let me explain how it works where I'm living now. I live in Port Libert?. 40 years ago this area was a total mess, it was filled with toxins and other really bad crap, and other than the fact that it was on the waterfront, had not a damn thing going for it. How much do you think it would have contributed to tax roles? Not much. So the city government at the time realized that some impetus should be given to a developer to get the area going again. The impetus was the right to sell the finished properties on this piece of land with a tax discount that would end in 30 years. They turned that decrepit piece of land into an oasis on the water. 30 years after the abatement went into effect, 440 fully rate-able units are now on the tax rolls, instead of the zero that would probably be here if no abatement was offered.

Hoboken, OTOH, doesn't have vast wastelands with toxic sludge or no development. They may have small pockets, but land there is incredibly valuable, so no abatements are needed.

Any and all of the televised fireworks started on time. Anyone with any professional show experience can make stuff happen on time.

I have no idea what led to Snoop Dogg's act being late, but someone needed to keep all the concert acts in line as to on and off times on the concert stage. 5 minutes late would have been one thing, but 45 minutes late, total screw up.

Tardiness, short of health emergencies or similar, is one of the ruder things in this world. It's a sign that you believe your time is more valuable than others.

Isn't this part of the same group that tried to steal the ambulance contract for Jersey City from JCMC a few years ago?

The assumption was they would steer all their emergency calls to Bayonne, Christ, and Hoboken, where those emergency rooms would rip you off. They also are not "in network" for most major health insurance plans.

It may be a problem for liberal states, but it's not a problem for this liberal mind. There is a happy medium somewhere. And quite frankly liberal states are doing much better than conservative states in so many different ways.

This is because some abatements are based on, at least for a portion of the abatement period, on a calculation that has nothing to do with the normal tax rates, but a formula based on the highest purchase price and common charges. It is possible for that formula to wind up creating a number that is higher than the unabated tax bill.

Murphy is Corzine, without the sweater and the beard.

There is nothing wrong with "taking care of your own." But there is also nothing wrong with taking care of those less fortunate than you. I'm liberal and damn proud of it, but if someone does break a law, or tries to live without working to support themselves, I'm all for cutting them off.

In the case of the "Dreamers," these are people whose parents came here illegally, but the kids were just brought along. In order to qualify for DACA, they must be working or in school, they must be crime free, and they pay fees to have their status. I refuse to believe that forcing these DACA recipients to live in fear as we've done over the last year is good for anyone.

Those public officials and the rest of us that support "Sanctuary Cities" know that the best way to deal with crime amongst illegal aliens is simply not to punish those illegal aliens who's only crime is finding their way into this country. If the hard working, (and yes, most illegal aliens work harder at jobs that typical American citizens don't want), illegal alien knows he can talk to local police, he's more likely to step up and report the real criminals, including the few evil illegals.

As far as the absurdly low minimum wage we have, when a person works a "full time job" and cant afford to support his/her family or even just him/herself, when companies like Walmart and McDonald's suggest that their employees apply to the government for assistance because those companies don't pay enough, it's those companies that are getting subsidized labor, and they're the ones living off the government teat.

Yes, I will go out on record as saying that the difference between a liberal and a conservative is that liberals have empathy for all humans, and desire to change the status quo to help all people. Conservatives only care about themselves and those who are the same or already better off.

"Imputed debt service" is essentially the payment on hypothetical mortgage based on the conditions set out in the PILOT agreement. In my case, and I'd assume others, that mortgage is based on the highest sale price of the property's history, so you'd need to know that.

There are plenty of EXCEL spreadsheet templates that can help you figure that. Or find an online financial calculator.

"Common Charges" are your monthly or annual condo/coop maintenance charges.

To the OP,
You need to find your governing documents. Somewhere in that large document is the Abatement Agreement, or PILOT/Payment in lieu of Taxes. Use that and the Abatement charge document you should have been getting twice a year, which also shows the calculation. Try to figure the arithmetic on that calculation. It may seem complicated, but it's really just Junior High level arithmetic. And then pay attention to the Phase Out that's documented as part of the abatement agreement, and apply that.

By none-ratable, do you mean the buildings with tax abatement? In that case, I don't think it's true that "they are not affected by the new taxes". I live in Liberty harbor which is supposed to have 20 year tax abatement and which I thought meant my taxes were supposed to change for 20 years . I got the similar letter telling me my taxes are going up too.

You need to check your offering statement (or governing documents) for the abatement agreement. Most abatements have a "Phase Out," and it certainly sounds like you are in that Phase Out.

Additionally, unless you are in a life or death situation, and I know this is not as simple as it seems, look for 24 hour medical clinics for dealing with such treatments. Their rates are significantly lower than the ER, and these types of situations are exactly what they are designed for.

Obviously, a chest pain (potential heart issue) or broken bones, severe wounds, etc., head right to the EF. But pain that you've been living with, fevers, and other stuff that don't feel life threatening, then the clinics are a better choice.
