Re: Need a Handyman for Drywall Work

I just used these guys for a small plaster/paint repair on my wall and ceiling, since my upstairs neighbor's air conditioner leaked into my apartment. It was a small job, and I had a hard time getting a response from anyone. They gave a free estimate (which held), were fast and reliable and did great work. Looks like nothing ever happened to the wall at all. They're also insured and will provide references.

A better bet would be the Bigelow next to Lifethyme. They have a pretty comprehensive Weleda selection, and you can even order it online, if you can wait.

The Liberty City Honey is amazing. Both the Summer and Autumn harvests have a subtly fruity/floral flavor, but the Autumn has almost butterscotch notes. It's so good. I'll be stopping by for some.

Monteleone's cakes and pastries are great. Their pies are average, but they're well priced.

I don't like VIP diner much, but they're baked goods are pretty good, and they make a tasty, really fluffy pumpkin pie. Their pies are usually available by the slice and whole, but I'd call ahead.

A little background is in order. The easiest way to do this was to find vendors from all over New Jersey and New York who would come in and rent space at the plaza to sell their foods.

Would Two Boots and the other concerned establishments be willing to pay higher fees to the HDSID if they removed the prepared food vendors?

Absolutely agree.
They neglect to mention that they're quoting another of their biased, backhanded articles when referring to us as "an unfashionable town named after an unfashionable state?. You'd think they were quoting Dorothy Parker or something. I'm dead tired of the Times coverage of JC. I wish they'd stop mentioning us altogether.

I went to one of the most recent meetings the developers and St. Peter's held to introduce the project to the neighborhood. Apparently, the entrance and facilities for the college students will be separate from those of the residential portion of the building, and all the dorm floors will be contiguous and separate from the residential floors. The only thing they'll have in common would be the facilities open to the public, such as the restaurants, theatre and retail.

I'm assuming that since it's a dorm of St. Peter's, and not off-campus housing, that all the rules regarding on-campus conduct and security will apply.

I know that Thirty Acres, Razza, Maritime Parc and Liberty House buy from the same NJ produce distributors that the food co-op does: Zone 7. The items don't need to be certified organic as long as your practices are organic and sustainable. They might be especially interested in produce from Jersey City. I'd try at Satis Bistro as well.

Looks like it is, and if so, it's pretty reasonable for the bundle. I'd say the HVH Tomato Basil sauce runs about $5, the spaghetti (which looks like Bionaturae) is about $2.50 and the baguette is about the same.

I'm very concerned about this. When I was thinking about purchasing my home in the JSQ area, the Loew's was a contributing factor in my decision to do so, even in it's current state of renovation and programming. I'd be very unhappy about any plan to revitalize the Loew's without the input of their obviously capable local stakeholders. The before and after pics are astonishing.

I think the FOL also runs the JSQ Farmers Market. I wonder what will happen to that if they're kicked to the curb.

This is sort of OT, but you should probably try taking the Newport Mall/Exchange Place bus instead. It will save you the meandering route through JSQ and its environs, since it runs directly down Montgomery St. to downtown.

If you're not limiting it to downtown, then please donate to the Sharing Place at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Five Corners.

They feed about 600 families and individuals a month, and they are always in need of volunteers and donations. They've been seeing a steady increase in the guests they've been receiving during their distribution Saturdays, and they could use the extra help.

The proliferation of TVs in establishments doesn't make much sense to me. Personally, if the Bistro is sold, I would like to see a Raymond's in Montclair replicated there, or what Cafeteria in NYC used to be like back in the day.

Raymond's looks great! I'd love to have something there like the Mayrose, which I miss. It was great for a late night bite or just to grab a cup of coffee and something sweet and hang out for a bit.

I only ever see Mariage Frere at Dean and Deluca in Soho but it's a very limited selection. If you can't find the Earl Grey you're looking for, the Pleine Lune tea is a very nice scented substitute. You might also try the food court in the Plaza, which I've found has lots of imported products. If you can wait a couple of days, the Earl Grey with Blue Flowers from Upton Tea might also fit the bill.

Good advice from everyone. I'd also add that you should record the behavior if you can (audio or video). Your neighbor might tone it down when they see the police approaching (especially if you've called for them repeatedly), and you might want to give the officers some idea of what it sounded like before they arrived.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but what is there not to "get" about Brooklyn? The parts of Brooklyn that are popular and have exploded are super convenient, aesthetically attractive, and super walkable. Those are the reasons that people flock to urban cities.

If Jersey City was a part of the 5 boroughs, every square inch of Downtown would be as expensive as Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights. There is no doubt about it. The fact that it is not part of the 5 boroughs is the only reason why prices have remained relatively "low" ... and by the way, prices in DTJC are more expensive than in most neighborhoods in the outer 4 boroughs.

Brooklyn has built a brand. Jersey City has not. Steven Fulop knows this, and knows the importance of it, and is working at building the brand that Jersey City deserves.

People are choosing the outer stretches of Brooklyn over DTJC because A) Brooklyn has a brand, and B) it's officially a part of NYC. People who move to New York from all over the country and world want to live in the city limits. Demand drives prices up. So yes, Bushwick is still a shitty place, uglier than DTJC, but it's highly coveted to say that one lives in Brooklyn, so there ya go.

It's annoying, but the New York area does a terrible job of promoting the entire area as a region. The Bay Area does a fantastic job of promoting the San Francisco area as a region, although I'm sure some provincialism exists there as well.

I think personally, I'm a little unique in the sense that I think of the entire New York area as a true *region* more than most people do. Maybe it's because I spend so much time in Manhattan in my day to day routine, maybe because I have so much family all over the tri-state area. I think it's weird when DTJC residents say "I'm going to the city", because I feel that this statement implies that we, while standing in DTJC having this conversation, are in the suburbs in some sense.

Ahh. Whatever :) Just rambling.

Until people in JC considers all of JC as a region we will always be full of shit here. Most people who live dtjc disconnect themselves from the rest of the city. However most outsiders look at JC as a whole. When there are 20 murders or muggings the average New Yawker does not look at JC by sections but as a whole city that's bad.

Yeah, cause brooklyn heights residents defend bushwick ALL THE TIME and they don't think their neighborhood is any better (which usually means SAFER FYI) than bushwick.

So all DTJC residents should defend greenville, cause you know, that region is the main life blood of JC...

Geographically, Brooklyn Heights is a sight farther away from Bushwick than DTJC is from Greenville (which is cheek by jowl). The entirety of Jersey City is about the size of a couple of Brooklyn communities, though depending on those referenced, it could be more densely populated. There's little equivalence here. Bushwick's concerns are unlikely to effect those in BH, except at a high municipal level. I've found the factionalization in this place pretty ridiculous for a city that can be traversed in less than half an hour.

Isn't VF's incentive to pass on the lowest passable grade of fish at the biggest mark-up? Isn't the end-fisherman's incentive to flog VF anything they can't themselves sell for a premium.

No.

VF estimates between 24 and 36 hours between the landing of the fish and the share delivery, which is extremely fresh for commercially landed fish. Below is an example of how a share arrives; the label includes the catch date, species, origin and fishery.

Many of the larger local species, like swordfish, are higher in mercury, which may not be news to anyone. If you're pregnant or nursing, a woman of childbearing age or a young child, it's not advised for consumption. Others may do so if they choose, but not more than once a month is recommended.

VF lets you choose whether you want these fish in your share, and if you don't, it will either substitute your share or skip the delivery. You'll still get the amount of shares you paid for. This is all in their policies, and here's a list of the species available and their selection process.

Their Facebook page also has a lot of info, and you can post questions there or email them. They're happy to talk your ear off about what they do and how they do it, if you're actually interested.

Not sold on the quality nor value prop on receiving biweekly pot-luck for $15/lb. The whole thing seems designed to benefit the middleman.

I'm an owner of the JCFC, and our entire model is based on cutting out the middleman, since we as a group buy directly from distributors and farmers. Central to our mission is ensuring that the producers receive a fair price for their goods while keeping them affordable for our owners. We work mainly with small scale farmers, so this balance is important. It's also a concern for Village Fishmonger, and it's one of the reasons we chose to work with them to provide this service for our owners and the city. The convenience of the share delivery, promotion of sustainable local fisheries and knowing where the fish actually came from are also a plus.

If you're interested, here's an article about VF which might address some of your concerns.
