I will probably have to replace some flooring at least.

As to getting compensation for damages from JC --
good luck.
What you might consider doing is joining the
Yahoo Group "JCSOS" that was formed a while
back to deal with the huge flooding and sewer backup
problems that we have here..
There are some very well informed folks who
belong to that group, and it would not hurt for
you to write up your story and submit it to the
group and ask for advice.

I'm glad you got cleaned up.
p.s. let councilman Fulop's

anything to add.

I am on the other end of Third, up near Erie.
So far, knock on wood, no big problem; but i must
say that the storm drains/sewers on all the corners of
jersey and erie, all the way from Hamilton to VanVorst, smell just terrible -- which generally
indicates that the sewer lines are getting clogged
and need to be vacuumed by the city.

Give the city as many calls as it takes to get
them to come to you.

There is a not-so-funny story that has gone
around for years regarding our civil war
era sewers. It goes something like:
when you get off the path train, how do
you know you are in downtown jersey city?
answer: when you smell the shit, you
know you are at grove st..

Keep after the city about this. If there is no
response, call Councilman Fulop's office.

I personally wish there were more benches over on
the walkways near the west side of the park, where
it is shady and generally quieter and is a good place
to sit and relax and read.

The park as it is now is uncomfortable for me,
since i do not want to be near the noisy kids or
the dogs or the sports areas.

Other than having to bring a blanket to sit
upon on the grass, as there are not enuf benches,
there is not much option
for enjoying the quieter section of the park.
Can't they buy some more furniture and install it?

In addition to talking with a lawyer for your condo

commander's office. They are often quite
keen on helping out with stuff like this,
which if you just made a phone call to the

Noise is a tricky thing, and we have noise
ordinance legislation in place, -- but getting it enforced
is not easy, depending on the mood and temper of
the cops who answer the complaint.
Talk to the captain about your problem and
see what he has to say.
Let the rest of us know what happens. We all
potentially have the problem of neighbor noise, and

Ah, the good old days when:

You couldn't buy a New York Times anywhere.

Columbus Drive was Railroad.

Pavonia Hilton meant the local slammer.
(now, it probably means there is (egad!)
a Hilton hotel somewhere on Pavonia Ave.)

The Army/Navy store on Newark showed
the same window display that they had
done at the start of WW2, just proving
that good quality ILGWU garments did
not fade and always stayed in fashion.

The live poultry place on Second St,
where you selected your fowl and watched
the nice man wring its neck for you.

Mrs.Tedaro's coffee store in Italian village --
the best beans in the entire world.

A beautiful huge floor-thru apartment
on Hamilton Park south cost $200/month.

There was not a skyscraper in sight, and
"condo" sounded like a foreign language word.

The quality of the city council that newcomers see

years, and in all that time, the only, I repeat,
only qualified and decent council member has been
Fulop.
If you think today's current councils are fun, you

this particular branch (the newark ave. one) has been a consistent drag for me. it was so much better years ago when it was a little local bank,
independent and polite and competent.
but all those nice little banks of yesteryear are gone.

wamu was fine for the time that it was here, but
they shut down the newark ave branch and i find that
the one over by pathmark is too spooky to walk to.

the capital one bank on jersey and newark has been
pretty good with my meager money market account. i went

The precinct is saying that they cannot move toward
shutting this party scene down until enuf
neighbors petition the church to stop renting.
The police have said that their Biggest Problem
on Saturday nights downtown is Grace Church.
Not such good publicity for the church.

If the leadership at the church does not
comply with the needs of the neighborhood,
then we will have to go to the diocese directly.
Surely some bishop or other will listen to
reason.

Twenty years ago we shut down Rev.
Scott's loud, out-of-control and
dangerous party scene. We can do it again.
And being that taxpayers foot the bill
for almost every one of the "programs"
that the church claims as its own,
we have a LOT of say in this matter.

This feral cat pick-up thing has got to be VERY
carefully managed.
We need to remember that many people here,
particularly old-timers, keep outdoor cats
as backyard pets and have done so for
generations. It is a Jersey City custom to
have "yard cats."
No one wants to have his/her yard cats bagged up
and carted away. Everyone on a block should be
consulted before any pick-up/trap cats
"program" gets going. There will be mega-big
trouble if pets go missing.

concern to everyone. Most of my

I live across the street in the Rocket Building. On the night of the incident I was at my computer and heard screaming on Newark ave. Not too unusual so I didn't go look to see what was happening. About an hour later I did look out the window and at the intersection there was a police car with all the lights spinning and they stayed there for about an hour. If this was a hoax, it was a rather well orchestrated hoax.

I have to say that this neighborhood seems to be exhibiting two contradictory trends:

1. Increasingly affluent Hobokenesque couples (with strollers!) walking around like this is the west village or something

2. Increasingly hostile thugs who seem more and more desperate. I have never been harassed before in this neighborhood since moving here 4 years ago, but the thugs on newark/moes deli/grace church seem to be getting more ballsy and aggressive. I have a great view of newark and there have been 2 times this month I've heard screams and then looked outside to see people fleeing in all directions from Moe's deli. This didn't used to happen. The loud music was annoying but I wasn't seeing pedestrians being threatened.

A downturning economy affects all, but it hits the poor especially hard. This neighborhood is the most contradictory place I've ever lived. Suburbs or Hoboken is starting to feel like the better choice. But trust me I do love JC. I've met great friends here. But its such a bizarre place! I'd seriously miss Torico's ice cream, and my quick commute to Brick Haus.

The writer is correct.
It is very scary on Newark Ave at nite, and the long
dark lane of Erie St. could be renamed Eerie St.
That all-nite deli (Mo's) has been a major problem
since it opened years ago, and it is a miracle
that the police have never busted the place.
Surely it does not survive on selling a few
loosies and chewing gum.

It will get worse around here until
neighbors get together and call for a stop
to teenagers marauding at will thru
our hood, seeking plunder and
harm to our people.
The Grace Church "dance parties" are a prime
example of inviting crime into the nabe
and welcoming it with open arms under
the rubric of "doing good." More like
doing self-destruction.

It would take so little to return this
nabe to what it was back in the
seventies, all the yuppies and high
taxes notwithstanding. Just keep our
heads buried in the sand and it will
come about.

We had an incident in our neighborhood similar to those occurring on Erie Street (without gunshots) last night around 10:00. A crowd of about 35 teens (mostly males wearing the white tee uniform and white bandanas) made their way onto Emory Street from Monticello. Many were arguing very loudly and it escalated to shoving matches between many of the teens. They piled on top of cars setting off alarms and trespassed onto fenced properties. JCPD was called, a car was sent, lights flashed and they were told to disperse through a PA system. The incident lasted about 15 minutes until the police arrived. Does anyone know if there was a church or community gathering last night in that general area? I?d like to know so the problem can be addressed with those who might have organized it.

Thanks,

These church hall rental "parties" for teens have become
a major concern all over town, not just downtown.
We need to teem up with the police to put pressure
on the renters to stop this nonsense.
All the hard work that went into making
neighborhoods cleaner and safer than they
were in the seventies and eighties can easily
be undone.
The churches are looking to make money.
That's it, plain and simple. Do not be misled by their
"Doing Mission" malarkey.
Put pressure on your council-person, also.
This needs to be nipped in the bud before it
gets ingrained. Once churches get grant
money to support their "youth mission"
we will never be able to put a stop to it.

The problem is that these "parties" aren't being confined within the walls of the church or right outside. The people spill throughout the surrounding neighborhood and continue well after the party ends...police presence would be great, but not enough.

They need to end...walk around the neighborhood Saturday night...You'll find tons of empty vodka/beer bottles and lots of other trash...ok, there is already a lot of trash there to begin with, but there is definitely an increase immediately following..

Why should we wait until somebody gets shot to end these parties?

From reading the replies it seems there were only two parties, that were a problem not all of them. I dont think stopping every party all together is the right thing to do. Yes it does suck when a few mess up the fun for the majority just going to have a good time. I wouldnt see a problem with IF the parties continue to be a problem, having an officer present or at least patrol more between calls. There have already been enough places in this city shutdown because of the actions of a few people. The violence shouldnt be tolerated at all but ocasional violence is expected at large gatherings in urban areas. Maybe something should be done to prevent this from happening again but the parties should be able to continue.

To be correct about this: there have been
THREE "parties" so far this summer, and each one
has been a major disaster. The second one was
especially terrifying for the people who actually
live here. The police, who responded with many,
many cars, were essentially unable to deal with
the rioting because of the sheer number of
"Kids" --most of whom,by the way, are NOT teenagers but
folks in their twenties (fully adult, in other
words). Do not be fooled by parish rhetoric
that this is harmless and a "nice" thing for
the church to be doing. The church owes
allegiance first to the neighborhood it
resides in (since it is the neighbors who pay
the taxes on the tax exempt church real estate).

We have to realize that these so-called
parties are not serving the needs of kids
who live downtown, but kids from far
away nabes that have nothing to do with
downtown. If it were our own kids
getting the benefit of the dances, that
would be one thing. But our kids would
not be safe or probably welcome at these
thug-menaced events.
We need to put a stop to this stuff
before the church goes looking for
city funding to pay for these things
and then they become a permanent
part of the local geography. Once
the city or county starts paying for
a social program like "youth
services",it is almost impossible to
get rid of the Program even if it is
dangerous and an unfair burden on
the neighborhood it happens in.
Nip it in the bud is the best method
when you sense that something is
inherently wrong and ill-suited
to the site.

The police, in talking with neighbors
on Erie Street who were menaced
last time by the wild rioting,
said that there is a very visible
and identifiable Bloods gang
presence at these events.
We want the Bloods coming here
to party, folks?
Let's get real about this.

I agree. A Unitarian church would be a perfect fit for
someone seeking religious fulfillment without all the
trinitarian stuff and the weighty christology that you find
in so many protestant settings.
All Souls Unitarian on Lexington and 80th is a
wonderfully stimulating religious and intellectual
congregation. I worked close to them for many
years and often dropped in on their special

service consisted of a complete playing of
the symphonies of Mahler on tape -- only the music,
no liturgy or yada yada from the ministers.
Very moving and an inventive way of doing

In the Unitarian tradition, all are welcome
and are invited to participate to the extent
that is personally comfortable.

There are some very interesting Zen
congregations in the city also -- one being
the Village Zendo on Broadway and Prince.
i attended there for many years and

There are no liberal or progressive churches is JC.
Those that purport to be so are merely practicing
toleration ( in some cases very grudgingly) in order to sustain a viable congregation
and cash flow.

For a progressive protestant environment, you need
to go to Judson Memorial in the city, or Madison
Avenue Baptist, perhaps Marble Collegiate.

The churches around here just sort of dumb down
the gospel and put on services that remind you of
hippie musicals like Hair and Godspell.
This is not an intellectually or spiritually
stimulating experience for an educated
adult;
ok for kids, but gownups want more, it
seems to me.

Someone seeking a mature and evolved
theology would do well to look into Judson or
Madison Ave. If you are just looking for
neighbors to have coffee and cake with on Sunday
mornings, then going to church around here
should be sufficient.

I don't think letting cars turn from Newark onto Erie is a big deal, but it seems to me that letting cars go from Barrow to Erie messes up traffic in a lot of different ways.

Agreed. If you stand and watch cars on Erie Street down by the police hq, you will see that the majority of cars are
barrelling up out of Barrow. They're all using Erie

It does not matter to me especially what time they come, as long as they come and
take ALL the bags that have been put out.

On my block, Third St. between Erie and Jersey, the
collection people are very selective and hit-and-miss
about their job.
Oftentimes, they leave most of a building's bags behind,
and it is practically impossible to get them to take
recycleables.
No,the explanation is not that the stuff is not
prepared and/or packaged properly -- it is that they don't
care enuf to be thorough.

A phone call to the incinerator authority sometimes
gets them to come back and clean up their mess,
but usually it does not.

Everybody, just keep on paying your taxes and not
expecting much in return!!
