I wonder if the Abbey's regular featured in this article is the same guy I always see peeing on the street 2 blocks away from Abbeys. No lie...there is a guy in a wheelchair who always drinks at Abbeys then proceeds to drive up Newark Ave to Fifth St and pees just inside the corner. He used to do it on my block, fourth st, until I caught him and told him I'd call the cops if I caught him peeing on my block again.

My opinion is illegal dumping/ dumping household garbage in public cans that results in overflow and removal of the can is a bigger problem then excessive garbage. Tackle that problem first by getting the JCPD and JCIA to enforce the laws and be proactive in eliminating the problem. Then more public cans will be placed on the streets resulting in less trash being thrown on the sidewalks. THEN try to find a solution for excessive garbage. Thanks.

In all seriousness, please ask them why they do it. For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would dump house hold garbage in a public can...are the two nights a week garbage pick up not enough? Do they know it's illegal and will result with the public can eventually being removed? Are they just d-bags who care very little for their community? Please ask them why and post it here!

Yes, that's exactly what will happen.

Also, in the era of bed bugs, it discourages disposing of infected furniture.

That said, the city could encourage greener forms of disposal like post consumer recyclable sorting, reducing twice weekly garbage pickup to once weekly, increasing once weekly recycling pickups, and adding compost pickup for biodegradable waste.

That's not what has happened in Ithica - most people comply and behave responsibly as far as I can tell. The ones that don't are probably outed by their neighbors. If the City gives an incentive to "out" illegal dumpers, such as a percentage of any
fine collected, I'd guess it would stop pretty quickly.

Illegal dumping/ filling up of public cans is already a widespread problem, I agree...this would just encourage more.

If I called the Parking Authority and nothing is done then I call the police. If still nothing I will take a picture of the offending vehicle with license plate in full view and send it to Officer Dina Reilly of the East District and to Steven Fulop. Describe your course of action and let them know the lack of response is unacceptable. Sometimes you have to embarrass people/ city departments in order to wake them up. Unfortunately no city agency is proactive so we as residents have to be.

In my opinion, the lack of enforcement from the JCPD, JCIA and JCPA is the biggest reason why Jersey City may never reach it's full potential. Law breakers do not fear being held accountable by the authorites so they become emboldened. Drivers run red lights and stop signs because they know the police never catch them. People illegally dump their household trash in public cans causing overflow time and time again because they know the JCIA is not watching and never issues fines. Driver constantly place the public in danger by parking too close to the corners or on top of the crosswalks because they don't fear being ticketed or better yet TOWED by the JCPA. I walked by the East District Police Station the other day and someone tagged a building right across the street with graffitti. DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET from the police station!! If that's not a sign of what's wrong with JC then I don't know what is.

When a large group of students gather together for lunchtime they not only trash our neighborhoods but they trespass on our properties, roll and smoke blunts and occasionally there are fights. The larger issue is how the crowds are effecting the quality life of residents. Larger groupings of students tend to be rowdy and act unruly...they block sidewalks and don't allow people to pass. I can't tell you the number of times I have had to chase them off my front stoop. I completely disagree with you and your attempt to minimize the situation.

Perhaps that is a question that should be answered by the Board of Education. I wonder if the Board is even aware of the trashing that is done to our neighborhoods EVERY day. Why do we residents have to endure this issue year after year?

It was a joke. I find these QoL threads funny because the biggest QoL issue that overshadows all is really just enforcement. The apathy of our city officials to any QoL issues is a sad testament to the state of our city. Of course, God forbid people behave responsibly without having to be scolded.

Agree 1000%! Lack of enforcement from the JCPD, JCIA and JCPA combined with people who behave irresponsibly/ refuse to do the right thing. I think that overflowing public garbage cans are a symbol of the overall problem. You have people/residents contributing to the prob by taking their household garbage bags and jamming them into the cans causing overflow. Then you have the JCIA that knows the cans are overflowing but don't schedule more pick ups to alleviate the problem. In some cases they just take much needed cans away resulting with more trash in the street. Inspectors at JCIA don't enforce the no dumping laws by staking out the cans and catching violators.
Politicians know trash is a problem but do nothing to address the problem, if anything they authorize cans to be taken off the street instead of addressing the real prob. Police want nothing to do with illegal dumping. Everyone knows these cans are constantly in a state of overflow yet nothing changes!

These taggers are so fearless they even tagged a few buildings directly across the street from the police station. There are cameras mounted outside...I wonder if the police are investigating/ arrested them? It's pretty embarrassing that Beset can walk up and down Newark Ave and spray grafitti without the fear of being arrested. Note to JCPD: Grafitti is a serous problem, these vandals are clowning you. Please catch them, we residents are tired of seeing Beset Fds, Emelio Estevez, Look and I'm sure business owners are tired of having their buildings defaced. Do something Please!!!

Ive also seen a lot of blunt rolling/ weed smoking up and doen Monmouth and on Fourth St. All these kids need to be kept in school for lunch, they do not know how to conduct themselves properly in such large groups!

JC can't control all the crap that goes on in this City, graffiti, muggings, stalkers, dog walkers who let their dogs crap all over the place, people who block crosswalks and cause accidents and you want me to run to City Hall to register my dog. How about you guys RUN to my neighborhood and ticket the morons who crap on my sidewalk, graffiti my garage, throw garbage all over my street and ticket the cars who block my sidewalks and driveway....then maybe I will THINK about registering my freaking dog - If the dog has all the shots necessary then why the hell to I have to pay you to register the dog? Will I then have to take the frigin dog to inspection in two years? JC police and animal control need to concentrate on the city and the people in it not the dogs who live with us ! This City is the biggest JOKE ever -

I agree. God forbid you want to put a new window in your house. You have to wait for years before someone comes out and to take the bribe to get the proper construction permit. Don't register a dog though, and you're in jail within a week. This town is a joke. From what I've witnessed around here, it's best to break every law on the book, and do it blatantly in the open. You'll never get caught.

This is exactly the problem with Jersey City! Indifference and apathy toward the law/quality of life issues is created due to the lack of enforcement from the JCPD, JCIA and JCPA. People who would normally follow the law and be a good neighbor are instead frustrated into acting out of their character. I totally identify with their frustration but have not thrown in the towel and starting acting like those I despise. I instead do my part be it big or small to help make my neighborhood better. I use my frustration to motivate me...try getting involved in your local neighborhhod association. Get involved with the Downtown JC Watch...things will only change if you fight for what's right!

Call The JCIA at 201-432-4645 ext 0 and ask for dispatch. Tell them someone illegally dumped a shopping cart and give it's location. I have done this many times and they are usually pretty good at picking them up. If the cart is still there the next day make a follow up phone call.

Take a picture of the vehicle w/licence plate and send it to the parking authority, the police, and Steve Fulops office. Explain in the email that this vehicle is habitually being parked illegally (give the location) and it needs to stop. I would also post the picture here on JC List. Sometimes embarassing the guilty party along with getting multiple parties to hold them accountable can do the trick. Follow up with multiple emails..you must be persistant, good luck!

In my opinion, the lack of ENFORCEMENT is the biggest problem in Jersey City. The lack of Enforcement from the JCPD, JCPA and the JCIA create huge reprocussions that negatively effect the quality of life of all residents. People park too close to the corner or in crosswalks because they know that they will get away with it (people in wheelchairs and women with baby carriages can't cross but they don't care). Fights, public drinking and drugs occur every weekend on Monmouth St because the same hoodlums hang there knowing that if cops do come they won't be arrested. People constantly dump their household garbage in public cans resulting in countless public cans being in a constant state of overflow because no one is enforcing the illegal dumping ordinance.

There are plenty of easy opportunities for theses agencies to enforce the law and arrest/ fine the culprits. The result would be a better quality of life for residents and funds would be raised to help the city with the budget crisis.
