I've been using Taylor's Touch (358 7th St) for years now...Back when they were at International Foodmart!

Great service, timeliness, and price!

Yes, (when I was interning w/ them 14 years ago) they had most of the their back offices at 101 Hudson. Although I did hear (since then) they also occupy additional office spaces throughout Exchange Place.

Either way, it doesn't look good for LEH...

Hi...not sure if this is yours, but I've seen an early 80's green (either 300 or 240) around Grove...awesome car!

About 15 years ago I had an '80 240D...so I really appreciate that body style.

I haven't had to take my current vehicle ('05 ML500) for service yet, but will need too soon. That being said, you should consider some of the shops mentioned in this thread

Thanks in advance.

In the Ironbound section of Newark (at the end of Ferry St & 1&9) are few junkyards...I've gone there many times to get parts.

Agreed, I don't look just at credit score alone...My criteria is based on:
- a score of 670+
- decent salary (paystub required)
- (and if you don't have consistent income, commission only or waiter like salary) I require seeing a bank account with decent balance.

Hope that helps.

So after living in the area for over 4 years I've finally decided to try Miss America...Their pancakes are AWESOME!!!

Overall, it's a great local joint.

Other than that I'm a huge fan of Al's Diner.

Brownstone is good, but not worth waiting in line for...

Agreed CK.

Academic has always been the "elite" public high school in the city...Although I have heard good thing about Dickenson's advanced/honor's program recently.

Is it possible City gov is trying even out the other school?

I remember hearing stories that the whole area (including "the islands") used to be a large cemetery, and that site is all that remains of it.

Either way, it is horrible to hear that no one is maintaining it?Hopefully they get that resolved sooner rather than later.

Funny enough I too have an electric pole in my backyard as well.

Although I don't plan on removing it, I do believe you should start with PSE&G (they might remove it for free).

I don't believe you'll need a permit if you plan on taking the task on yourself, but you should verify with the building department

Hudson Catholic has been my school?s rival (I'm a Prep alumni) for as long as I can remember, but having the school close under such a cloud of mystery (was it really the land?s value, lack of enrollment, because St. Anthony?s needed a gym, etc) is just outright unacceptable!

This school has nurtured a number of the men you see daily in Jersey City, police officers, firefighters, city officials? My point is simple, this school taught their students the value of giving back to their community.

I commend everyone?s effort in trying to keep this school open?and hell if they close whose Prep going to destroy on the Astroturf? (sorry sometimes I just can?t let that rivalry go) = P

Although I?m not as familiar with Prep?s current student population, when I was there (about 15 years ago) Jersey City residents did have the most commanding presence, followed very closely by Bayonne.

I have to agree w/ ianmac47 & GrovePath, but I will try to narrow down a few sections (all around the Hudson-Bergen lightrail stops.

Lightrail
? West Side ? Sometimes referred to as the ?suburbs of Jersey City.? Rent in this area can range from $600 - $1200+ for a 1 bedroom (2 family-house to West Side station community respectively). Generally this area is quiet and parking for residents is zoned.
? MLK Drive ? Probably not an area you would want to consider
? Garfield ? This area is primarily multi-family houses where rent will be similar to West Side. It?s on the cusp of ?frontier land? but again, it?s pretty quiet and relatively safe.
? Liberty State Park ? There aren?t too many places to find housing in this area.

? Jersey Ave ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Marin Blvd ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Essex St ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Exchange Place ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Harborside ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Harsimus Cove - Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments
? Newport ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments

Sofie ? Although your question seems reasonable, it?s actually a pretty tough one to answer? With all the new ?areas? popping up (i.e Beacon area, formerly known as Medical Center, a part of The Hill or a section in McGinley Square), I can only provide what I deem as the Square (Journal Square).

- Palisades Ave (btw Newark Ave and State Highway Rt139) including the ?islands?
- Tonnele Ave (by State Highway Rt139)
- West Side Ave (btw Broadway and Sip Ave)
- Sip Ave to Summit Ave

I'm sure this will be debated...

Welcome to the board Garfield!

Historically (late 80?s to early 90?s) that section of Journal Square was pretty rough.

Although since then it?s progressively been getting much better. The area is very culturally and socially diverse. With all the new young professionals moving into the area as well as the new residential development around the Square the anticipation is that it will be the next ?boom? for Jersey City.

That being said, I would say a fair comparison for walking from the Square to Corbin is similar to walking from Grove to 5th and Jersey Ave. It?s obviously not as safe as walking inside a gated community, but it is relatively safe for a metropolitan area.

Regarding your car, that area is generally safe and if my memory serves me correctly Corbin is a really wide street, therefore you shouldn?t have to worry about your car being side swiped. Just don?t leave your navigation in the car (that?ll get stolen anywhere you park).

I normally end most of my ?Jersey City insight? posts with this caveat?I?m born, raised, educated and still live in Jersey City. I?ve seen this place go through transition. It?s so much better now than it was when I was growing up.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I grew up 1 block from Journal Square, so that area can be considered my old ?stomping grounds.? The surrounding area has gotten better over the years? No more night club under the skyway (Foxes, for those who remember). The population in general is progressively getting more diverse. The ?undesirables? don?t congregate on Tonnelle Ave as often.

Canco is a welcomed community for the area (Brunswick Towers has always been the lone standing condo building and St. John?s Apartments is slowing transforming from a senior citizens community to young professional/family oriented complex). It?s located on the cusp of a major highway and a residential neighborhood.

I do expect the surrounding area to be a completely different place in the next 3 to 5 years. With the revitalization of Journal Square and the new towers being built, I do anticipate an even greater push toward the rest of Jersey City (outside of Newport and Exchange Place).

I guess my long winded statement is this?right now buying in Canco is potentially a very profitable investment (with the caveat that you plan on owning it for a while).

Re: Day Care - Downtown

We've been taking our child to Baby Galileo about 2 blocks from the Grove St. Path station (Newark Ave and 1 block North on Manila Ave).

I have nothing but GREAT things to say about this facility...The owner Louiza is very hands on, and the caregivers are extremely attentive. One important thing to note is that Baby Galileo assigns 3 children to 1 caregiver? This is important because the state mandates 4 children to 1 caregiver. More attention to my child is PRICELESS!!! This was the main reason we choose this daycare.

As you?ve probably read in this posting, there are other options in the area, but I can only speak for the daycare we?ve decided on.

Good luck and welcome to Jersey City!
