Re: Where's the Monarch of Jungle Jungle Land?

So from what I?ve learned that unless waiting for some special individuals to step forward that have extra-ordinary energy and drive to get things done under the umbrella of a conservancy group (that the HPNA will of course have to approve of)?. then clearly, there is no plan.

The city may perform minimum duties? but one thing is certain? they did more than the HPNA ever have and that isn?t saying much since they claim to have been around for some 20 years and claim to look after this park. Other than organizing monthly meetings, lining up guest speakers and fighting developers, I?ve never seem this group organize maintenance of anything in this park that went beyond raking leaves, which is sad because they clearly want to control whatever, whoever comes into any park ?maintenance? plan.

Well, more importantly there is absolutely no reason to suggest that there's going to be red mulch anywhere in HP including surrounding the new lush gardens which have been planted around the charming seating surrounding the new fountain. Nor is there any evidence that there's going to be any red mulch around the gazebo garden, where it seems some very nice plants are going in today or tomorrow including nice shrubs, ornamental grasses etc.

I hope you continue to make progress and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

SamS.. I understand your need to brag about the fountain, charming seating area and lush gardens... because (in my opinion) it is going to be the most popular area of the park. It's really too bad it couldn't have been done on a much grander scale as was suggested by somebody we both know. Brag all you want....

Can anybody... HPNA, Councilman Fulop or perhaps Eric Silverman, give an update as to how the gardens are going to be maintained?

Much appreciated.

In 2005- we received a donation of mulch and we got whatever was donated to us. At that time, we just started out and had no money and were dependent on local business' (14th Garden Center, the City, etc.) to provide whatever we could get.

Red mulch is not ideal as it is doused with chemicals. Just read the bag at any garden center. Since millions are being spend on the renovation, I'm asking that other mulch be considered.

Because I live here too and I use and share the park too... and I have opinions and may post them on this board. I?m not about to keep those opinions to myself because I might upset someone. So you?re happy with the new & improved park? that?s great. But I am not.

I know dark fudge when I see it and I can?t help myself but laugh when I read some of the ?positive? statements?. like the anti-flower folks that tried to squash & ridicule our gardening efforts and made certain that all the former plants were ripped out? now commenting on how lovely the new plants are. Positively bullshit.

Too much stuff (something for everyone), stuffed into the park, equals HODGE PODGE. That?s what the ?H? stands for.

I truly believe in trying to right a wrong before it's too late. At any cost, it is worth the effort to try and make whatever few gardens there is going to be -- to be something more than a commercial style garden with ugly red mulch and annual plants that are used around big box retail chains and restaurants. Since maintenance of gardens is necessary and a concern as folks on this site are complaining they don't want residents maintaining them... then why wasn't garden maintenance included in the plan? If there is a plan, I'd like to know what that is.

------
By the way, last fall when we relocated some of the doomed plants from the garden bunkers that went onto be destroyed? a woman approached me to ask if I had permission from the HPNA to take the plants out. Since the plants did not belong to the HPNA, I told her that I had permission from the parks dept. to relocate them to new homes in an attempt to save them. I told her that some of them may come back again when the renovation is complete and the woman told me that the HPNA said that nobody could plant anything in the park.

I don?t own the park, but clearly, there are others that believe they do.

I?m not impressed with the new park and I don?t have to wait until it?s done to figure this out. The millions of dollars being spent will make an improvement. But my point was missed. No, I don?t blame the City for putting things in the park, based on what the community reps told them they wanted and did not want.

My issue is with the community reps vision, lack of experience and stuffing way too much into a park without focusing on the top needs that were addressed on the first ballot when hundreds of residents responded (dog run, playgrounds, gardens & green space). The dog run was addressed. The children?s play areas were addressed. But not the gardens or an abundance of green space. These were extremely limited as all three ball courts and the gazebo were left in place. So the fountain was squeezed in and is merely an off centered replica; and all the plantings (healthy or not) are gone.

As for any gardens, I can only bring attention to what some people liked about them. Old roses that performed non-stop. Hardy perennials that even when un-watered, still showed their faces until they?re time had passed. What can we expect now? The usual display of common pansy & impatiens dressed in red chemical mulch that line the parking lots outside a Target store? And there are people right on this message board willing to step up and care for gardens, and shamefully, they?re being told they cannot.

Nice try, though. Nobody beats a drum against an enemy that doesn't exist quite like you do.

Do you think that wanting sprinklers to keep the parks grass green is petty? Were you at the spring 2007 meeting when the plans called for no irrigation? I suppose I was being petty when I brought the subject up.

Do you think that bringing attention to the 100 year old trees that were rumored to be cut down from the park was being petty? I wonder how many more trees may have been downed if I hadn?t run that article in the newspaper.

Was I being petty when I pushed for a fountain to resemble the parks historic fountain from the old postcard of the park? The park is, afterall, in the historic district.

Should I have cancelled the 2005/2006 farmers market back when there was none because HPNA reps were calling the Councilman asking him to shut it down?

I don?t know who you are? or perhaps I do, but your writing on this thread seems very bitter whenever someone has a concern about the park, the renovation, or a complaint of any kind. They all have legitimate concerns!

Of course the park is going to look better. They?re spending millions and the contractor, Green Construction is working diligently to finish the job. But not everyone here on this board was involved in the process or understands how politics works? and yet, some of us do.

I?ve attached a link to the old FoHP website. Scroll down to the November 19th blog to read up and view photos of the gazebo-garden cleanup work by community volunteers not affiliated with the HPNA.

http://friendsofhp.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

For anyone to say that community residents don?t want gardens in Hamilton Park is absurd. I was present during the renovation meetings and voting process and know this to be incorrect. If I recall correctly, the top three items that the community voted for to come from this renovation was a dog run, adequate children?s play areas and gardens & green space. All the other things followed received much fewer votes.

I don?t believe the City is opposed to having community residents involved in the planting and/or maintenance of park gardens. On the contrary, there are plenty of gardening groups throughout the city doing just that. And believe me? the City appreciates their work, commitment and beautification efforts. However, I do believe that in the case of Hamilton Park, that the City is allowing the HPNA to call all the shots. So if the HPNA is against adding gardens or not in favor of allowing community residents to be involved and has representatives making statements that our community residents don?t want gardens in this park? then there is a problem. The best way to counter this is to let your voices be heard. Call our city officials and tell them what you want. It?s never too late to add a garden or two to the park. I?m 100% in favor of it! And this would be an excellent time to bring up the topic so that an adequate watering system can be installed since lack of water was a problem in the past.

I recall a renovation meeting in 2007 when pictures of community gardens showing adult people working in them were on display. Since these community-style gardens are not in the current plan and are not what we?re getting? then the people present during that meeting were deceived. The attached photo I?m referring to is on the FoHP blog.

I used to be a flight attendant with TWA. I remember the emergency training we had for a water landing. We had to communicate to the passengers to unbuckle their seat belts (because they panic and forget to do it), and to instruct them to put on their preservers. We had to inflate our preservers and jump into the water as part of the training. And we learned how to remove the emergency exit windows and throw them out in the event of evacuation.

Yes, all flight attendants wait on passengers to serve food and beverages and assist with seating and luggage, but their main duty is emergency landing. Luckily I never experienced anything like this.

I'm so glad that everyone got out safely.

BackFlow Preventors
#42
Home away from home
Home away from home

Is anyone familiar with the letters that were sent out to various buildings (associations) in Jersey City in regards to BackFlow Preventors.

The following letter was sent from the Office of the Construction Official :

"The City of Jersey City is implementing a policy for BackFlow preventors. All structures that have backflow preventors are required to register them with this office and receive a certificate of compliance every year.

The Consumer has the responsibility of preventing pollutants and contaminants from entering his/her potable water systems or the public potable water system. The consumers responsibility starts at the point of delivery from the public potable water system and includees all of his/her water systems. The consumer, at his/her own expense, shall install, operate, test and maintain approved backflow prevention assemblies as directed by the authority having jurisdiction. The consumer shall maintain accurate records of tests and repairs made to backflow prevention assemblies and provide the administrative authority having jurisdiction with copies of such records. The records shall be on forms approved by the administrative authority having jurisdiction and shall include the list of materials or replacement parts used. Following any repair, overhaul, re-piping or relocation of an assembly the consumer shall have it tested to insure that it is in good operating condition and will prevent backflow. Tests, maintenance and repairs of backflow prevention assemblies shall be made by a certified backflow prevention assembly tester.

The fee for the certificate is $75 per annual inspection for each backflow preventor. For High Hazard Backflow Preventors the fee is $300. per year due to this agency having to do inspections and cerfificates every quarter.

Please respond to this notice within 20 Business days. Failure to comply with this notice shall result in a penalty and/or court action. "

-------------
I understand that a few condo associations have complied with this policy and have paid in excess of $30,000 to conduct water tests, hire engineers, and had new backflow preventers and new sprinker systems installed.

But not all condo associations can cough up $30,000 to pay for costly engineers and a new sprinker system. I'm wondering how other people are dealing with this and if they're being asked to update their entire system? What kinds of penalty's do people face? Has anybody been taken to court? Was anybody's water shut off for not complying? And can anybody recommend an engineer?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I don?t find anything wrong in following these kids for the purpose of trying to learn more about who they are. There are so few people that actually get involved, especially when it concerns other people or other peoples property.

The pebbles, stones, rocks (whatever is being thrown) may not have damaged his property (it certainly could have), but he was also concerned for his neighbors. As a property owner in Hamilton Park, I really I appreciate this.

Getting caught can be a major deterrent and perhaps one, two or all three kids may think twice before doing it again.

Re: What's the deal with Roberto Clemente Field??

Years ago, I approached two men that were inside the Roberto Clemente Park and asked if they knew who was maintaining the lawns because the grass was in such good condition. I had told them that I was trying to get help for Hamilton Park to try and improve the lawns there.

The two guys both answered me in an extremely hostile tone. One of them said, ?lady, we don?t let our kids play in that shit of a park? and the other one said ?I haven?t taken my kids there in years and we aren?t going back there again?. I was taken back. I was fairly new to Hamilton Park at that time and was just learning about the politics involved.

To this day, I still believe that either Roberto Clemente Park or Enos Jones Park (or both) should be available for locals to use for ballplaying (and not just the little league teams). If people that want to use these fields to play a game and act responsibly by leaving the premises in good condition and lock up when leaving, then they should be given keys. Just my two cents.

The folks that work at the kiosk stands do not bother me. I just smile and continue walking quietly and they understand and say good day. The way I see it is they are trying to earn a living and doing their jobs.

The other day I was at Macy?s and waited 20 minutes for service at the Dior counter. I ended up leaving. At one time they had a very good associate there that was great with customer service, but she?s gone now.

Perhaps Macy?s should recruit some of the aggressive kiosk workers... they are not lazy or shy.

Paul cuts my hair at Salon X and I pay the sixty bucks because I want to support them but mostly because I don't trust my long locks to just anyone!! He was trained by "the Paul Mitchell"... and he really does a great job.

I get the feeling that they're closed in the evenings.. or some evenings. I would think that they would do more business in the evenings after people return home from work. I also think they could use one of those sandwich boards on the corner to help advertise because it's kind of dark (during the day) and unless you know it's a hair salon you may not notice it. Just my opinion.
