Trying to read 'Enders Game'. Pretty good so far.

Thanks for reminding me, I finished Ender's Game but didn't get to finish the rest of the books in the series, I think I'm going to pick up where I left off at on "Speaker for the Dead"

but first I want to start Stephen King's "The Cell"

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books! I read it the summer before my freshman year in High School (yes, I was one of those dorky sci fi girls). Speaker for the Dead is also very good. I read most of the series, except for the last one, which was pretty bad. His parallel series, which focuses on Bean is also readable, although I did not like it as much as the original.

I really want to read Ender's Shadow because they're going to mix Game & Shadow together to make the movie (even though it'll probably be a flop, I want to see how they pull it off

I can't imagine that they'll make a good movie out of the books. Are they filming? They've been saying that they are going to make a movie out the Ender's Game for years and nothing has even happened.

Well the good thing is that Orson Scott Card is still in control of the script last I heard and he threw out every pitch they came to him with. That's when they decided to mix the 2 stories together to make the movie work, thus making the bond between Ender & Bean more relevant. Again, I doubt it'll be good, but i want to see it nevertheless. They're in pre-production, but no filming has started yet. He still wants kids to be the actors and not the WB style 28 yr old posing as kids...so they're looking for middle ground now.

Hey newtoHP,

I'm new to the small business thing, but I'll try to answer any questions you have.

Just PM me, stop by the store or just email me a list and I'll do what I can.

Newport has the worse security EVERYTHING I've ever seen.

I still remember when a guy came in the store back when I worked there and asked me to turn my head while he stole speakers...I called security and about 10 mins later they sent down the little old lady security guard (even though she is a sweethart) WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO!!!?

I had to walk from behind the counter and "escort" the wannabe thief out the store myself.

As for their camera system HA! There are tons of blind spots in the mall...that's why they're always getting robbed!

I agree with you there, Four Brothers Pizza is GREAT, even though I remember that they always used to pet that little dog they kept there while making/serving the pizza...but I think they cut that out after a few complaints

But, who cares...I'm sure we've eaten worse

I've lived in that area for over 10 years now. It has gotten alot worse in the past few years, but there's still worse out there. The condo's on the left side of Harrison Ave are ok...but stay away from the one's on the right (it's weird I know)

There're condos on the corner of Harrison & Kennedy which are ok and some on the corner of Bentley and West Side which are decent.

Last year I had my car broken into...in my driveway only because I had a spindle of blank DVD-R's in there.

And this year a friend of mine had their car window smashed in their driveway and had their GPS stolen.

People are randomly walking up and down the block even in the wee hrs of the night, I'm guessing returning from friend's houses...so it's not too bad of an area, sometimes there are rowdy kids out there, but not to much.

And I've seen cops driving up the block randomly, so at least it has police presence at times (even though sometimes they're just flying by.)

Just stay on the good side of Communipaw...after that, it gets worse and on the other side of Lincoln Park...well, let's just not talk about that for now =p

I see property values going up in a few years, because you are surrounded by some beautiful houses and easy highway access.

Food places are mostly just fast food

But you can take a 5 min bus ride to Journal Square or a 10-15 min bus ride to anywhere else in the city you need right at the corner.

Hope that helps

Apple Plumbing and Construction
201-954-5429

I've used them for my house & also for my store.

They're quick. Their prices were great plus I was very satisfied with their work.

I've recommended them to a few friends, neighbors and other people on jclist & have heard good things from them as well.

Plus they're local and give free estimates

Check them out.

As far as I know it's $55 a month, but it's only available to mall employees. That is unless they've changed things since last I checked.

- Cheap and typical of small business and how they value their staff. Why pay for insurance and also money collections

Gamestop is a publicly traded corporation, that owns over 5000 stores, has over 33,000 employees with annual sales of over 5.5 billion dollars, this is not a "small business".

Insurance companies writing polices for retail stores have clear guidelines for public and employee safety as well as loss due to theft.
They will not cover losses or lawsuits if the written policy is not followed, when it comes to insurance coverage of missing, lost and stolen deposits. There is very clear and strict guidelines.

Looking at this event from with a "loss prevention" perspective, there is something clearly wrong here.

If the store management/staff did not violate company policy by doing a unsecured night drop, and the staff were following all the coperate policies and procedures, the risk for a law suit from the employees because of employer negligence would be substantial for such a large company.

That's the thing though, I've never seen an employee sue them over something like this & that's why they continue to do it. I remember a store was robbed at gunpoint and when the DM was notified the first thing he said was, "How much did they get" not, "Is everyone ok?"

Just one more reason I hate that company. In that store they started making us take the deposits to the bank at night, when it used to be perfectly fine to take them during the day, while there is security around and there's light outside.

I'm surprised that they gave the manager off today, but it didn't surprise me when I found out that they still expect him to be back at work by tomorrow.

Next I'm sure they'll blame him saying that he should've taken a different route to the bank or walked faster.

I'm not sure what type of volume that store does and how many days worth of deposits this entailed, but asking any employee to do a night drop when the bank is not located in the mall is insane. The cost of deposit pickups is pennies when you look at the big picture and the safety of the staff.

Save-a-buck > Staff Safety

It's sad too, they weren't always like that

It's a shame, when I first read it in the paper...I brushed it off as gang violence or drug related. Then I got the phone call the next day & found out it was an old friend of mine.

I went to school with the kid. He was never in trouble a day in his life, always hard working and fun-loving. Eating breakfast at a diner and then killed, just because somebody thought he was someone else.

Life is too short...live everyday to it's fullest.
