Up until recently, I taught GED classes at the adult day school located in the Infinity Academy building on Old Bergen Road In Greenville. The teachers there are good, well educated, experienced and caring. The students who work usually pass the test. I recommend the day school over the other programs. Kudos to your friend for going back to school.

Re: Christie calls on extending school day and school year. In Jersey City

As a parent of two school-aged children and a veteran teacher who currently works in a school with an extended day, I disagree with Chistie?s proposal. People on this list and Christie himself will probably say that I disagree because I am a lazy, selfish person who is spoiled by ?teacher?s hours?. Of course teachers appreciate getting early, usually so they can catch up on paperwork, but this is not the reason that this teacher opposed an extended school day. I?m against it because I see how terrible it is for children.
My school day ends at 4:15 and, in general, my students are an exhausted, neurotic, miserable mess. Today?s students are under way too much pressure to perform by teachers who are equally pressured and to keep them in school for more time makes it worse. Every teacher on my school?s staff knows that the kids check out by 2:00. Every day at three o?clock I come that much closer to burnout when I have to go against every nurturing bone in my body and force five-year-olds to sit up straight and learn to read and write. At times I have put paper towels on my rug to let a kindergarten student sleep. I would probably get in trouble but I find it abusive to force an exhausted child to try to pay attention to a lesson. There are those who would respond to this and tell me that I have to be more creative in my teaching and engage the students and make my classes a big game. However, those people have not walked in my shoes and do not understand the pressure that I am under to have my students meet the objectives thrust upon me and my students by NCLB (No Child Left Behind) and the Common Core State Standards. They have also probably never heard of a pacing chart or probably have never seen the new lesson plan formats which force me to treat my students like robots.
And then the kids come home and do homework?.way too much homework. In my school, the lucky students get home by 4:45, but the ones who take the bus may get home by 5:30. They have a minimum of an hour?s worth of homework. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children between the ages of 5 to 12 get 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night. How is a child supposed to eat dinner, spend time with his parents, read for pleasure, and God forbid actually go to the park and then get into bed by 8:00?
Folks, please know that the politicians are killing childhood. NCLB, CCSS and the likes of Christie have no idea what their policies are doing? I have just ordered dozens of stress balls to give to my students because half of them are biting the skin off their fingers. My daughters are miserable because of school stress as well. Every well-respected educator in history has talked about educating the whole child. Why have the politicians thrown this out the window? If it?s to keep up with the Chinese and remain on top, then they can have it because I don?t want to teach, parent, or live in a country whose educational system is abusive to kids. And if people like Chris Christie have their way, that?s what it will become.
If anyone knows a young person who is majoring in education, my advice is to tell them to switch their major to psychology. We are going to have a lot of messed-up, neurotic people on our hands in ten years in need of a good shrink.

I'm a teacher too, and the ones making education policy wouldn't last 4 hours in a Jersey City or Newark classroom. The situation is completely insane.

Forgot to mention. Although it makes sense to talk dollars and look at how much extra money is being taken away from needy disadvantaged kids. The thing is that it really isn't all about money all the time. It's more about who the student is and what the family is like. Money spent does not necessarily equal student success.

I teach ESL in a JC charter school. I don't know how much additional money it costs to educate non-English speaking students (ELLs). I do know that JC public and charter schools receive federal grant money through Title lll funding. My viewpoint on ELLs in JC schools is that we are lucky to have them. You can't compare JC schools with a wealthy suburban school district which has been overwhelmed with illegal farm laborers. In my opinion, the large amount of immigrant students, including ELLs, is one factor which might make JC schools better than Newark. JC schools have an extremely diverse ESL and bilingual population, and many times these students are the best in the class. Their parents came here seeking opportunity and they know that education is their ticket. Look at the magnet programs for academically advanced students in Jersey City and you will see that the majority of the kids there come from immigrant parents or are immigrants themselves. Most of them probably received ESL in kindergarten. Regarding bilingual education, the law states that a bilingual program must be offered if a district has more than 20 students speaking a particular language. I'm not sure how JC deals with the problem of having so many students of different languages spread out among different schools. They might bus the kids, but I'm not sure. Anyway, my take on the whole thing is that the diversity of the JC public school population is definitely a plus. I work with them, and they are generally wonderful students and so are their parents. I wouldn't work in JC doing anything else.

Two of my brothers-in-law are JC fireman, and my sister has been a nurse at Christ Hospital since 1980. They are wholeheartedly against the JCMC taking over the first responder contractor, not because they want what's in it for them but because it will be bad for the public. My brothers-in-law say that they sometimes wait 15 minutes for an ambulance after they have responded to calls. He was red in the face yelling that people are going to die waiting for help if this JCMC takes over. My sister, the nurse, says that JCMC will join a consortium of hospitals with neighboring towns which seems like it will be a logistical mess, making response time even worse. In addition, I am a public school teacher who deals with grant money all the time. I know how public institutions use creative accounting to suck grant money away from the designated programs into the general fund. JCMC is in financial trouble. Why do you think they want to receive all the money. Do you think they are fighting so hard to take this on, so they can use all that money solely for the new service? Bottom line is this. It is a cost efficient and effective to have fireman respond to first responder calls. They're being paid anyway to be in the firehouse, and they are always the first ones to show up. Their response time is way better than cops, and EMTs. And please don't think that my brother-in-law is a selfish union idiot. He's going to get paid anyway. He is upset because he cares about the public and knows what's going to happen if this change happens..

My car, which was parked on 9th St. between Coles and Monmouth, was sprayed with purple spray paint last night. Two other cars were hit as well. There is a light grey Pilot which the police recorded, but the owner is unaware. If your car was hit, try a magic eraser and some simple green.
If your car or property is vandalized, please report it. I've noticed a lot of graffiti downtown in the past 6 months, and it will only be addressed if it's reported.

Thanks JCPD for fast response and cleaning suggestion.

I'm a schoolteacher (taught math basic skills for many years) and I do recommend KUMON for computation and number sense. It's a big pain and the kids hate it, but it really develops discipline, focus, and they will be really, really fluent in computation. For basic arithmetic, it's wonderful. I did not do the reading as my kids did not need it. btw: Don't listen to educators who tell you that kids don't need to be fluent in arithmetic because they have calculators. It's nonsense.

DPW is probably my least favorite department in JC government. Loaded with lazy, dirt merchants like this guy who sit in their trucks all day, and then drive home out of JC. Fire him, and it's one less like him on city payroll.

And kudos to the cops for those cops for doing their jobs.

We just bought a place on 9th Street and I notice that there are red watermarks forming in our toilets. I'm a little concerned because I also noticed a red film forming at the bottom of the cat's water bowl. I know some houses in Hoboken get it too. Does anyone know anything about this? I want to know if it's confined only to our house also.

Re: Advice for Marketing a for sale by owner condo

Working with realtors when you are selling your property yourself is not the same as listing with a realtor for a low commission. When you sell your house yourself, it's more like you are your own broker, and you split the 5% or 6% commission with the buyer's agent. Brokers and realtors usually cooperate with each other anyway, so why not just be your own broker, do your own open houses, and cooperate with other brokers.

ExUWSGuy and all. We ended up doing really well. We had our first open house at the beginning of November, got a good bid the next day and closed on the house by December 15. We ended up saving $20,000. Don't know if it was luck, hard work or a combination and I am not sure if the same thing would work for a condo in the Heights. We are right up the street from Hamilton Park, and we got tons of people who were in the neighborhood and out on foot looking around on a beautiful fall weekend.
One thing I do want to mention is that we got dozens of phone calls from realtors who were willling to work with us for 2.5 to 3% commission. Also, we listed with the deluxe package from FSBO.com which gets you listed on Zillow and multiple listing service. So ExUWSGuy, I would suggest trying it out for a few months and see what happens before you decide to list with an agent. Also, take the time and effort to make your place looks great. Put your crap in storage and go to IKEA. Paint,,hire a cleaning service, get advice from artistic friends and borrow furniture and decorations if you need to. It's worth the effort to show off the features of your place. We have some for sale by owner signs if you are interested, PM me.

Can anyone recommend a home inspector and/or structural engineer who is really good at looking at old houses. Thanks for all of the great advice. We're going to give a lot of the ideas a shot - minus the declawing. My husband bought the nail cap thingys. We also bought a cat tree, but I think it's too small for my kitty. He likes a nice big surface where he can go to town. Never thought of just hanging a big piece of carpet on the wall, but I am definitely going to try that. My cat loves to scratch on the doormat in our hallway. Maybe I'll get him one for Christmas.

Thanks again!

preventing cat from scratching sofa

I just bought a new sofa, and my cat thinks it;s his new scratching post. Any advice about how to prevent him from destroying it? He's ruined other furniture before, and I don't want it to happen again. We've tried the sprays and aluminum foil, but it doesn't work for him. We've bought him scratching posts for him in the past, but he doesn't like them. I'm considering getting him one of those big cat trees. The suggestions of any cat owners out there would be appreciated. Right now, my sofa is covered with blankets.
And please, no mean cat jokes. He's a sweet boy, but he's still got a little bit of the wild cat in him.
